For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist endorses John McCain.
How will this impact Tuesday's primary, as well as the rest of the campaign?
Despite conservative angst with the Arizona Senator, is the media's love affair with McCain, and all the attention he's getting, turning him into the inevitable winner? Or, does Romney or Giuliani have the political skill and dexterity to wrestle back the limelight and momentum?

Bill Kristol says Thompson to endorse Romney.
January 27, 2008 - 12:05 ET by RJToday on the Chris Wallace program on Fox (I think he said he heard it through the Chenys, but I'm not sure) Kristol said that Thompson would be endorsing Mitt Romney.
If so, is the groundwork being laid for a Romney/Thompson ticket?
<edit>
MSNBC has just announced that Dick Cheney's daughter, Liz, will join the Romney campaign as a Foreign Policy Advisor.
A Romney advisor also said that Romney has picked up most of Thompson's team.
If true, these events are easily more important than the Christ endorsement of McCain.

January 28, 2008 - 17:46 ET by JerYeah, RJ...well, I've about had a bellyful of the "northeastern U.S multi-sports juggernaut" [Patriots, Sox, Celts, UConn, etc.] and the resultant burgeoning hubris of New England fans in general. Remember, "pride goeth before the fall". I'm even considering (gulp) rooting for the Yankees. <wink>
By the way, I never did find out why the Lady Vols chickened out of playing UConn.
Jer
Come on, Jer
January 28, 2008 - 18:10 ET by RJI said UCONN men aren't even ranked this year, and just lost a starter and the first guy off the bench. That's why beating a #7 team made it such a great victory. That's not hubris.
And we've suffered many years with the "Babe-cursed" Red Sox, the "Patsy" Patriots, and the "Len Bias destroyed" Celtics. Don't we deserve our moment in the sun? Don't worry, things will change soon enough.
And as far as the UCONN women are concerned, just to make it fair to the rest of the league, last week we got rid of two starters for the rest of the season. Now, that's "hubris." :^)
As for Tennessee, Pat S. said she would reveal her reasons after the season. Personally, I think it's nothing more significant than her absolute dislike of Gene A.....(no matter what she says.) She hates his wise-cracking sarcasm, but his players love it.

By the way, UConn men just knocked off Louisville in close game, and women beat Notre Dame.
If Pat Summitt dislikes Auriemma, I think she is being petty. Every time I have heard him speak about her, he has been very generous with his praise. Maybe I missed something, or there was acrimony behind the scenes.
So I don't mind you enjoying a little more time in the sun...but I am leaning toward Giants Sunday--not that I think they will win.

January 28, 2008 - 19:12 ET by Roger the ShrubberCool, RJ. I was a Swin Cash fan since she was in high school. She was dominating and very impressive. She came from the really nasty projects of McKeesport, but always seemed to keep her head on straight. Other than Cash, I always had a little thing for Rebecca Lobo (I thought she was cute for a women's hoopster), but that was back when she was in college, not later on, when Keefy Olberdouche had the hots for her.

January 27, 2008 - 13:57 ET by Evil CapitalistI'd again argue that should no major event happen ( such as unraveling of the economy, terrorist attack, etc ) then the only thing that would keep the White House in the hands of the GOP is a real battle between Obama and Clinton all the way to Dem convention as it would drag into the light lots of dirt on both but more importantly waste a lot of Obamas money. Make no mistake, should Obama be the nominee, the amount of money he would be able to raise will dwarf the amount of money raised by any Republican ticket. GOP is still running as if it was 1960s. GOP is raising money the way they did in 1960s. That methodology is done and we better get with the program. Without money GOP message would be irrelevant as it won't be getting in front of the voters.
If Obama
January 27, 2008 - 15:12 ET by Gat New YorkObama could win.
Billary cannot. Billary would unite and energize GOP voters and would unleash far more money in the way of 527 groups than the Dems have.
That may not be the case with Obama. The only way to fight Obama is on the issues and inexperience, because the race card will work against the GOP as Billary is discovering.

I agree 100% with your assessment of Crist, McCain and the other RINOs we have running around our State. Crist has been and continues to be a disappointment. As you stated, everyone had to hold their noses to vote for our Governor last time. I was hoping one of our real Repubs would come out and don the mantel but none did. It was a choice of worse and worser. I do not know how popular McCain is in the panhandle. You may be right but this area is and always has been "conservative". I just hope no one is fooled by his military service, thinking that alone qualifies him for POTUS. It does not! Admirable yes, a free ticket, hardly. I know I will not be voting for him. I was around his type my whole Navy career. Not to be trusted to do what he says he will and he is another one who flies into a conniption fit when he is crossed or does not get his way. John McCain
January 27, 2008 - 14:32 ET by Lame CherryOne has to understand John McCain to understand what is going on in the election.
John McCain is a "cartel boy" in the sense he like Joe Lieberman put together legislation which put into place the massive skimming of gambling operations with Indian casinos.
Those billions are akin to the laundered money Rockefeller cartel banks skim off of the coke trade coming out of Cuba every year.
This is the backing McCain has and why he was furious Bush 43 kicked his butt. The Bush family is a different branch of this cartel in running the banking and CIA wings on an international scale.
The current race does not have a Bush in it. Romney might be Mormon which is the Masonic rites branch of the New World Order, but Romney can not promise governors money.........only research on family history so they can be saved Mormon style. Not much of an enticement there.
McCain though is deeply imbedded with the money flow traffic which appeals to the RINO's and patricians. They know where their caviar is crackered on..........and McCain is the reason this segment of the establishment is latching onto him.
McCain though is highly vulnerable if Fred Thompson pulls in behind Romney and if Romney is promising a Vice Presidential slot as this race is now shifting into Reagan Country. The people there might not like Mormons, but they can not stand John McCain or his type.
The real person in this that I HOPE gets out of the race and signs onto Romney for a top spot in his cabinet is Rudy. Rudy will suck off the RINO's quickly and end McCain's bid.
Things are tough and getting to McCain as he is going crazy again in charges like he does when he is under pressure. He knows very well the above I just posted is true. He either knocks out Romney now or in the distance McCain fades fast.
It would be so very nice if the Ron Paul libertarians who are libertarians and not anarchists would get on board to help Romney instead of ripping this party apart. Paul will not win and all he said he will do is shred the party in not backing the GOP nominee.
The object of this is electing the best right wing person to the White House........not to screw things up so Al Gore sweeps in due to the planned fragmentation of the Democratic Party.

Russert wasn't going to be that tough on him anyway IMHO...he wants McCain in too...
...the other little back and forth that infuriated me was his lying about Romney and his comments on the withdrawal plan...he makes me ill...
I am sick of hearing how honest and what integrity McCain has...I was screaming at the television I just wished people had the time to know what that man does and has done on the Senate floor...
Disgusting little man.
We needed the duct tape too....lol.

The USA hates black
January 27, 2008 - 15:04 ET by Roger the ShrubberThe USA hates black people!
The sub-prime mortgage crisis is "financial apartheid". It's not the government's fault, right? Riiiiight.
At least, according to United for a Fair Economy, another left-wing marxist moonbat outfit funded by Ted Turner, among others.
This is the group that, a couple of years ago, pushed Preserve the Estate Tax, alongside George Soros (shocking!), Bill Gates Sr., and various Rockefellers. Why preserve the estate tax? Check out this Marxist garbage:
Repealing the estate tax would leave an unfortunate legacy for America’s future generations," the signers warn. Repeal would undermine philanthropy and "would enrich the heirs of America’s millionaires and billionaires while hurting families who struggle to make ends meet.
Does that cause you to pause, my Socialist, er, Progressive Newsbusters comrades? Remember that the next time you get your next paycheck. The websites you visit, the "news" you consume, all powered by people like these.

vandalism + hate
January 27, 2008 - 15:39 ET by CatherwoodI wish all of you could have seen what gang-banging vandals did to the new school in my community last Tuesday night. The two did in excess of $10k damage to the school by smashing glass, spray painting walls with gang symbols and epithets, ruining the gym floor, tearing up office equipment, ruining audio visual equipment, etc. Their final act (you won't believe this!) was to tear down an American flag and urinate on it. They pulled the flag out into a hall to be sure they were on video. They also stole about $5k worth of stuff including radioes, computers, and clothing which they wore to school the next day to impress their like-minded friends. The two vandals were caught the next day and charged with multiple felonies. They were incarcerated in the local juvenile jail where they have to stay for a whole 30 days. They were 15 years old and in the eighth grade. And, it was all captured on video. You should see it; you really should.
Cather... God help this
January 27, 2008 - 15:44 ET by bigtimerCather...
God help this country.
Did the local news report this, did they give any reason for the poor little misunderstood buggers...
Sickening, pathetic and maddening... I hope they get a full sentence possible coming to them, plus having to work off the damage they did when the leave...I don't care how long it takes.
vandalism
January 27, 2008 - 20:44 ET by CatherwoodYes, the local news people covered the story in print and on the local tv stations. The damage was so extensive it attracted quite a bit of attention. Word is in the community is the vandals will be back in court in Thursday to face more charges. Textbook damage and other overlooked damage has now emerged. Another encouraging word was that the school's insurance company is going to try a recoup some off its losses with a civil suit. Discouraging word is that the vandals will be allowed back in the school system at the local alternative school. I am sure they will return there as heroes. It really is sickening to hear the vandals' apologists plead their case. For example, the school has already been blamed for not 'properly' securing the school.

I live in SW Florida, we are having the same problem here. The crime rate is soaring among juveniles and early 20's. I feel your pain and totally understand. My husband and I thinking are of relocating to NC (possible transfer).
15 and still in the 8th grade...something is wrong with that picture.

January 27, 2008 - 15:58 ET by Hunter12COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) - Republican Mitt Romney climbed into a tie with John McCain three days before a critical presidential primary in Florida, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Sunday. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, wiped out a 3-point McCain advantage overnight to pull into a deadlock with the Arizona senator at 30 percent. The margin of error in the poll is 3.4 percentage points. Romney enjoys big leads among Republican voters who describe themselves as conservative or very conservative, while McCain has an edge among Florida moderates ahead of Tuesday's primary. They also were tied among most key demographic groups in the state. Romney held a slight edge among seniors, who make up more than a third of the sample in Florida, and among voters under 30. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee gained 4 points overnight to register 14 percent and move past former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who continued his downward slide by losing two points to 13 percent. Texas Rep. Ron Paul was at 3 percent and about 9 percent of likely Republican primary voters in Florida were undecided. "This is a two-man race. It's all coming down to McCain versus Romney," said pollster John Zogby. "Romney is ticking up a bit and he's getting strong support from conservatives," he said.

Remember, no indies invited on Tuesday...McCain is dreaming.

Feb. is peak tourist season, and all the Young people will be too busy working to vote, that will be the only missing link.

Once again, McCain has to rely on the liberal end of the GOP spectrum and I suspect these people will re-assess before Tuesday. The MSM is going to be PO'd when their boy doesn't win. I guess trying to cram someone down the throat of people used to thinking for themselves has a tendency to backfire.

When their boy doesn't win...
January 27, 2008 - 16:24 ET by BlondeI think we need to start an MSM Consternation Pool for Tuesday night....kind of like in 2000 when Gore was declared the early victor. Whatever shall they say to explain the egg dripping down their faces, yet again? I'm running through the comments we may hear, why McCain was soundly beaten back, even though the MSM did their very best. :D
And Mr. Sheffield, if you're on....it would be great to have a chat Tuesday nite to discuss the results as they begin to roll in. Fun stuff, I suspect.

McCain is a Democrat's vision of a Republican
January 27, 2008 - 16:25 ET by PopularTechThey have no problem with his reducing spending rhetoric since he is anti-tax cuts for anyone but the poor. They support him wanting to "fight" global warming, he wants to close Gitmo, he voted against the gay marriage amendment, supports embryonic stem cell research and wants to give amnesty to the illegals. This was told to me word for word from a liberal Democratic supporter. Any candidate more to the right on these issues scares them to death.

January 27, 2008 - 16:29 ET by BlazerI disagree Pop. The Democrat's vision of a Republican is one which said Republican is standing with jack-boot's while gesturing a sig-hiel. McCain is the Dem's wishful vision of a Neville Chamberlain or Lord Haw Haw to his own party.
In fact I'll start referring to McCain as Lord Haw Haw or maybe Lord Hardy-Har-Har.
