For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: the media have turned on Bill Clinton.
As NewsBusters reported here, here, and here, the press this weekend went on a frontal assault of former President Clinton. What is their goal?
Is this retaliation for his media bashing the past couple of months? Do they really want Barack Obama as the nominee, and not Hillary? After all, many leading Democrats believe that she will so energize Republicans that even if she wins the White House, the GOP could take back one or both chambers of Congress.
Or, are they really behind Hillary, and believe that Bill is getting in the way of her success?

Too many MSM personalities
January 21, 2008 - 11:43 ET by JayTeeI don't subscribe to the "Conspiracy" theory on the MSM, there are too many personalities (or lack there of) to co-ordinate attacks on Clinton. They DO recognize when their OWN are doing Dumb things, be it Hillary or Bill.
While they share the Common Goal of electing a Dem and Trashing the Republican candidates not of their choosing, and seem to Co-ordinate across MSM boundaries, the MSM believes First and Foremost that "They" need to Control the World as we see it.
This is a Temporary Slap down of Wild Bill, and wishful thinking that Obama the Rock Star will continue to Win.
Congress is Broke, DC is broke, and both Obama and Romney can run on the FIX IT Platform, but Hillary cannot.

What's wrong with Republican
January 21, 2008 - 12:07 ET by Chris NormanWhat in the hell is wrong with Republican voters in South Carolina? They're recognized for their conservatism, but they vote for McCain and Huckabee. Are they POLITICALLY DYSLEXIC?
Huckabee - Social Conservative
January 21, 2008 - 12:15 ET by vrwc13I the battle here at NB on "Who's a Conservative and Who's a RINO", blogger MikeknaJ makes a good point below:
But first a definition:
A social conservative believes in "traditional morality and social mores and the desire to preserve these in present day society, often through civil law or regulation. Social change is generally regarded as suspect, while social values based on tradition are generally regarded as tried, tested and true. It is a view commonly associated with conservative religious groups, militarism and nationalism." [1]
"One who favors social policies based on a particular reading of Judeo-Christian values, generally in favor of public prayer and the right to own guns, and opposed to abortion rights, same-sex marriage and the teaching of evolution in public schools." Source Watch
MikeknaJ says:
Actually, the reason he's still in the race is because he is a social conservative in a race where for too long there wasn't anyone holding that mantle. Social conservatives are just as important to the party as fiscals and national securities, and that was forgotten by those in the lead back in early/mid '07.
Plus, he's a superb communicator and a genuinely likable guy. If he didn't have those communication skills and the kind of personality he had he never would've catapulted from nowheresville in the polls to a first-tier candidate like he has because his message would've been overlooked. And that wasn't the media that did it. It was his performances in the early debates and a grassroots movement that coalesced behind him afterwards. Admittedly, though, it's a tough battle for him now to move forward from where he is, with the South Carolina loss. MikeknaJ http://newsbusters.o...
Conservatism can be seen as a 3 or 4 legged stool. One of those legs is "social". Huckabee ranks the highest here. It's the other "legs" of conservative that have been debated about Huckabee.
McCain on the other hand got the moderate/independent vote.

Because of the vast amount of debate here on who's a conservative or RINO, I have tried to find an "solid" definition of "conservative". And only after Mike's blog did I realize the concept of the "stool".
Every "conservative" here will have some diferences on each "leg". Maybe the best conservative is the one with the best balanced "stool".

January 21, 2008 - 12:18 ET by Chris NormanThere seems to be a huge disconnect with the conservatives who comment here and the GOP votership at large. From the breadth of comments I've read over the last couple of years, I thought we had a fairly representative sampling of conservatives here, but I now I begin to think that conservatives here are much more astute and discerning than those who are now going to the polls.

Eating my words
January 21, 2008 - 11:58 ET by ricklailYesterday I said some things about Eli Manning that were not too flattering. Today I must eat my words. I guess it comes from watching too much ESPN, listening to too much ESPN Radio and Sporting News Radio, and reading The Sporting News. We don’t get to see the Giants here in NC that much, so I was basing my words on the sports media. Boy were they wrong. Eli looked a lot better in this game than Payton did against the Chargers. Also Kikki Barber is even more full of crap than Keith Overbite. He blamed all the Giants woos last year on Coughlin. Kikki is no longer there and the Giants are going to the Super Bowl. Does it occur to him now that he was the problem?
Can they beat the Pats? I am a believer now so I would say YES without any hesitation. I learned my lesson. I don’t put much stock in what the MSM says so why should I put any confidence in people like Mel Kipper or Arnie Spanier?

Giants
January 21, 2008 - 12:10 ET by Gat New YorkThe line has Pats and 14 points. If memory serves me, wasn't it just a matters of weeks ago that the Pats barely beat them?
I agree, forget the points, take the Giants to win. Eli has arrived.
Yay for Eli
January 21, 2008 - 12:49 ET by candanceI watched the Giants/Pats game last month and was impressed with Eli then. He got the Pats rattled in the first half and came the closest I'd seen to pulling an upset. I knew then the Giants would go somewhere.
Eli struggled in the early season but I think the Giants found the perfect time to peak. They outplayed the Packers on nearly every possession and clownstomped Al Harris. The score was deceptively close because of that one good pass Favre threw for that long touchdown.
If and that's a big IF Brady shows up to the SB playing like he did yesterday and Eli/Burress are still hot, the Pats could be in trouble.
Candance, don't put too much into the QBs performance
January 21, 2008 - 13:08 ET by RJyesterday. It seemed to me that ALL of them were affected by frozen fingers.
On another subject, when the Giants won yesterday, I was worried that, like an all-Noreheast World Series, an all-Northeast SuperBowl wouldn't get much interest. But, judging from the postings here, it's apparent that most of the country will tune in, hoping to watch the Pats get whipped.
Sorry to disappoint y'all, but that just ain't gonna happen. :^)
Well RJ
January 21, 2008 - 13:18 ET by candanceIt wasn't just Eli who won the game for them, I agree. The Giants defense kept the Packers from advancing as fast as they needed to. Most of Eli's missed attempts bounced out of someone's hands while Manning's missed attempts bounced off the grass.
And the Packers gave the game away with all those penalties. Come on, two back to back on the same drive to give the Giants first down? Not to mention they couldn't get an interception the whole time while the Giants picked one off in OT.
The Giants beat them in every facet.
Penalities
January 21, 2008 - 13:26 ET by RJ=frozen brains?
I'm not taking anything away from the Giants, just saying that yesterday's games don't give much indication of what to expect in the SuperBowl.
Big oops
January 21, 2008 - 13:59 ET by candanceJust read through my above post and noticed I inserted Manning instead of Favre. Yeah that made a lot of sense!
Well I'm not necessarily basing my opinion entirely on yesterday's games either. Like I said before, the Giants struggled in the late season but had some pretty convincing wins over Dallas and Tampa. The Patriots had to rally a comeback to beat them in December.
I also think you're putting a little too much blame on the cold. The Giants were supposed to be the ones not used to it, but they played as well as ever. I don't think those penalties were signs of frozen brains. I think they were signs of frustration.
We'll just have to disagree about the cold, candance
January 21, 2008 - 14:19 ET by RJ...but here's my argument:
ALL the QBs were throwing off-target and off-rythm throughout their games. The punters were often short and off target. You can call multiple penalities toward the end of the game "frustration", but by that time the cold had seeped into their bodies and thinking DOES slow down when you're chilled.
Also, several players were temporarily sidelined due to "cramps" caused by dehydration, and we'll never know how many other players were also affected by dehydration. As a winter camper, I can tell you that it's easier to get dehydrated in the winter than summer for two reasons: first because many people forget to hydrate in the winter and second because they don't notice it as quickly.
So, yes, I would say the extreme cold had a MAJOR effect on the games.
Mostly agree RJ
January 21, 2008 - 14:26 ET by candanceI agree the cold affected both teams and yes guys were getting cramps out there. I just don't think that was the reason the Packers lost.
Pats vs. Giants... Well,
January 21, 2008 - 19:39 ET by JerPats vs. Giants...
Well, here are my .02 cents worth....Oh, what the heck, I'm going to get really brazen and up it to .03 cents!
My sentimental choice is the Giants...primarily because I've been a Manning fan since daddy Archie's days at Ole Miss. Later, a huge Peyton Manning admirer throughout his collegiate career at Tenn., culminating with his being absolutely robbed of the Heisman in the third greatest injustice in the history of sports [1. Jim Thorpe stripped of Olympic medals 2. Ali wrongly deprived of over 4 years of his boxing career when he was in his prime]. Peyton's record in college was so outstanding by every possible standard of greatness that if there had been no Heisman award, it would (or should) have been invented for him...and yet they gave it to a junior defensive back!
I have never felt Eli was anywhere near as talented as his brother, but I can't help but root for him.
On the other hand, as much as I have tried to deny Tom Brady's greatness, I am forced to acknowledge reality. That, coupled with the fact that Belichek (sp?) is far and away the best coach in the NFL, leaves me no altenative but to pick the Pats--by 9. [I have no idea what the official line is, but nine is mine...bank on it!]

Depends on the meaning of do....
January 21, 2008 - 14:41 ET by PawpawNJust like that imfamous Lib, BJC, depends on the meaning of do... What a perfect example of what makes people so despise lawyers, when not all are bad. "Without knowing", well can they get him for alcohol or drugs or insanity and strip his license. Kinda like the story I always heard on why Demi moore left Bruce Willis....seems he just slipped and happened to fall into his housecleaner's, well you get what I mean!
Cloverfield
January 21, 2008 - 13:22 ET by Hero SquadAnyone see Cloverfield this weekend? Saw it did bang-up business ($41 mil), doubling the grosses of that "27 Dresses" chick flick.
Is it worth the hype?

I had no desire to see Cloverfield but now
January 21, 2008 - 13:31 ET by Dee BunkI'm very curious. After finding out it was done by the people who did "Lost" I became a little more interested. Then when I went to the theater to see something else there were warnings that Cloverfield could cause motion sickness and was like when riding a roller coaster. That made me more curious. Then my son saw it and he thinks I would like it and the guy in my local paper gave it 4 (out of 4) stars.
I'm probably going to see it now.
Dee, here's the new
January 21, 2008 - 14:06 ET by motherbeltDee, here's the new theatrical trailer for it....it does look a little dizzying....
You aren't kidding MB!
January 21, 2008 - 15:39 ET by Dee BunkI got kind of sick just watching that! It does look good though and I'm going to have to see this one in the theater even if it makes me sick because it will never be the same on DVD.
Yeah, it's one of those
January 21, 2008 - 15:55 ET by motherbeltYeah, it's one of those movies you have to see on a BIG screen! LOL
Not my kind of movie, though, and I don't mean the dizzy parts!
hero -- monster smash!
January 21, 2008 - 13:55 ET by Jack Bauerhero -- hate to blow my own trumpet (I said trumpet Mr Clinton) but I will..
I was thinking of your post
January 21, 2008 - 14:21 ET by Hero SquadI was thinking of your post and this thread when I saw the box office figures. You were spot on with Cloverfield; pretty close with the dress movie.
Ask 100 people which of those two movies will do better, and 99 will say the action flick. Replace Geist with another random person, and the figure goes up to an even 100 out of 100.

January 21, 2008 - 14:25 ET by Jack Bauerhero -- oh sure, no great shakes in my monster flick chick analysis.
Anyone who actually bothers to pay and GO TO THE MOVIES amongst REAL PEOPLE (unlike Geist) would know that!
But thought I did boffo on the figures!
If you haven't kept up with
January 21, 2008 - 14:01 ET by motherbeltIf you haven't kept up with the Bob Grant flap (a radio industry magazine withdrew his Lifetime Achievement Award before it was given), Radio Equalizer Brian Maloney has the rundown, complete with links back to the beginnin of the story, and a rebuttal today by "The Great One" Mark Levin.
Eugene Robinson column
January 21, 2008 - 14:46 ET by PawpawNToday's Charlottesville, Va Daily Progress has column by Washington Post Writers Group's Eugene Robinson, "VOTERS HAVE MYRIAD OF CHOICES". Talks highly of all Dim candidates but not very good about GOP ones. Only says Ron Paul[of all people] the only GOP candidate right on issues. Slams the "WEIRD IDEA OF REPLACING INCOME TAX WITH CONSUMPTION TAX". A silly read for everyone.

Romney & Dims
January 21, 2008 - 15:01 ET by PawpawNI'd rather vote for someone who believes in GOD rather than DIMs who don't. They believe only in one higher power - GOVERNMENT! Can't see Repubs shying about from asute businessman, true leader, family man, values man, etc. Mormon or not, he's the best candidate on either side.
