For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point this Christmas day: More than 8 out of 10 Americans identify with a Christian faith...

About 82% of Americans in 2007 told Gallup interviewers that they identified with a Christian religion. That includes 51% who said they were Protestant, 5% who were "other Christian," 23% Roman Catholic, and 3% who named another Christian faith, including 2% Mormon.

Because 11% said they had no religious identity at all, and another 2% didn't answer, these results suggest that well more than 9 out of 10 Americans who identify with a religion are Christian in one way or the other.

Shhhhh........

Don't tell the lefties. We don't want them to know. Also, with the Christian numbers being so large, it means a whole lot of Moonbats are closeted Christians! That, my friend, is delicious!

MERRY CHRISTMAS Y'ALL!!

Bad theology and pure ignorance...

82% of Americans call themselves Christians? As I heard back during the days of the Jesus Movement, going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you a car!

Believing IN God is one thing - believing ON Him is a whole different ballgame!

OK - maybe you COULD translate 'demons' into something else...

I noticed that a new Gallup

I noticed that a new Gallup poll about Americans' faith classified Mormons as Christians. Good news for Mitt ;-)

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL FROM SUNNY FLORIDA!

As the world's attention turns to the town of Bethlehem, it's worth revisiting the question: what really happened in the Middle East? Why is it so dysfunctional? What prevents people of all religions from
living in peace? The highlights of the presentation What Really Happened in the Middle East are worth reviewing.

For that you have to

For that you have to examine real motivations. For every conflict that is pure religion based, there is probably 1 in 3 that is really power , ego, and wealth accumulation based and just using the religion as an enabling tool.

Even in the most religious of pure conflicts there are still a number like that to help it along as long as they prove useful the the top figures.

An example of real motivations

Indeed! Take the Thirty Years War for example. Was that a war between Catholics and Protestants...OR was it an attempt by the Hapsburgs to attain European hegemony, and meeting resistance?

Merry Christmas Newsbusters!!!

For news-challenged commenters that still think there is no progress towards reconciliation in Iraq thanks in large part to our leftist dem leadership in Congress confirming their political future dwells in denial, not in progress:

BAGHDAD — Approximately 1,000 Iraqi citizens, of both Shia and Sunni religions, joined together on the sectarian fault line in Rawaniyah, the Karkh District of Baghdad, to march with one another in what they called a “Peace March”, Dec. 19.

Drums beat, children ran, silly string littered the air and one man nearly wept. It was an exciting, yet emotional day for the Iraqis who participated.

Merry Christmas NewsBusters!!!

Meanwhile Afghanistan is

Meanwhile Afghanistan is booting out a couple of UN types who were holding their own talks with the Taliban.

Likely guess their objective was a hold hands , sing pretty songs and let's all make nice.

New Direction for the war on

New Direction for the war on terrorists from a veteran.

"I am over 50 and the Armed Forces think I'm too old to track down terrorists. (You can't be older than 42 to join the military.)

They've got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year-olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys.   You shouldn't be able to join a military unit until you're at least 35.

For starters:

Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy.

Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. "My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry!"

We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some asshole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while.

An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10 a.m. Old guys always get up early to pee so what the hell. Besides, like I said, "I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some son-of-a-bitch.

If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser.

Boot camp would be easier for old guys. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we like soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling.

They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training. I can hear the Drill Sgt. now, "Get down and give me ... er... one."

Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet.

An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start up a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head. These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way.

Let us old guys go after the enemy. The last thing an enemy would want to see right now is a couple of million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them."

Many thanks to the author who ever and where ever he is.
Merry Christmas

That's very good.

I wish I was a kid again

I am having fun with the grand kids toys. Been in two running tank battles and played lead guitar in a rock band.
Wish they would have had stuff like this when I was a kid. Had to help the grand daughter set up her sing like Hannah Montana stuff.

The daughter in Pensacola has called 4 times this AM crying because she is not here. That is the life of a Marine wife.

All of you that have children or grand children that couldn't make it for Christmas I know how you feel.

For all of you that have a son, daughter, child or spouse that is in the US States armed forces, we pray for you. Thanks for the service to our country.

Have a Merry Christmas.

It is cloudy and cool here in Lincolnton, NC. That hasn't bothered the kids in my daughter's neighborhood. They are out in full force on the new bikes, skates and skateboards.

Hey, rick!

Crisp and sunny here in Youngstown, Ohio ... The snow we took on just a few days back has melted away, all but the drifted or scooped aside stuff.  No neighborhood "kids" have yet emerged from their dwellings as of yet ... Probably either napping due to a butt-crack of dawn awakening, or a sugar cookie overload.

My 7 yr. old is watching a movie and surveying the latest additions to her Barbie collection.  My college coed daughter is out cold on one of the living room couches, still recovering from Midnight Mass, and her little sister's "wake up! Santa was here!" revelry ... Meanwhile, just across our small burb, my oldest daughter is trying to catch some much needed Zzzzzzzs after pulling the midnight shift at the hospital Neuro-Surg ICU (she's there AGAIN tonight), coming home early this morning and having Christmas with her 2 yr. old and husband ... I had Christmas Eve dinner here last night (smoked turkey breast with all the trimmings) for them all ... drank almost a whole bottle of Riesling myself, fell asleep on the couch, woke up in time to see Santa stocking the tree ... and took him to bed (HEH!)

Santa will be grilling bacon-wrapped steaks outside for Christmas dinner ...

I'm NOT a fan of the WWE pro-wrestling thang ... But my husband is.  I did, however, take the occassion to watch it last night.  They had obviously taped athe episode in advance ... It was in Tikrit, Iraq with the troops.  My hat is off to these well-trained "actors and actresses" for bringing such fun and joy to our troops deployed in theater. They did good!

Merry Christmas to our troops and their families ...

... and let's NOT forget our folks serving us domestically here at home patrolling the streets, running to fire-calls and medical emergencies, and those working those unpopular shifts in the ERs and hospitals too ...

Riesling

Riesling, huh?   My family and I have always been big fans of Spaetlese...

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Spaetlese ... my favorite!

Spaetlese ... my favorite! But couldn't find my brand at the store.

Spaetlese?

I had my spaetlese operated on a few weeks ago and I'm feeling much better, thank you.

My son in law is a paramedic

My son in law is a paramedic supervisor for the county. He just left for work. Had to work last night too. My daughter is in the kitchen now preparing dinner for his crews. At least he will not have to work New Year's Eve. That is a very busy night for rescue and medical personnel from what I understand

Some Christians call them self liberal also

Unfortunately there are many liberals who call themselves Christians.  They even try to tell you that Jesus was a liberal.  I would rather keep the Savior out of the political discussion.  He is above politics.

I have also seen even yet a smaller group of Christians even fighting for the separation of church from state.

So we have Christians fighting against Christians without them even knowing it.

Why Petraeus?

In the Dec. 22 issue of the NYT,  Michael O'Hanlon heaps praise upon Gen. Petraeus for the success of his surge strategy.

This causes Leon to ask a simple question.  Why does Petraeus get credit for a strategy that was proposed in 2002 by Gen. Eric Shineski?

He took another General's idea that if we had followed when it was proposed we would have avoided an unknown amount of violence and death.

All Petraeus did was use another General's idea 5 years late.

So why does he get all the credit for a simple idea?   More soldiers will decrease violence?  No way!

Merry Christmas, Leon

... and no manufactured and made-up non-issues, today. They're all off-limits.

TnT, It's a simple

TnT,

It's a simple question that had me thinking over the weekend.  Why does Petraeus get credit for Shineski's idea when Shineski got slandered for proposing it 5 years ago?

I'll speak about what I want to.  Christmas is over.  Back to work.

Well Leon

I see you are now quaintly referring to yourself in the third person.

First of all, it's Shinseki, not Shineski.

Secondly, the guy's armor....his reason for wanting several hundred thousand troops is classic armor vs. infantry doctrine.

Petraeus is an Infantry officer...and wrote the current COIN (counter-insurgency) doctrine.  Which is totally different than what Gen. Shinseki proposed.  Apples & oranges, Leon.

You really ought to read up on things before you post.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

But, poor Leon would lose

But, poor Leon would lose all of his charm if he read up on topics before posting.

Precisely, Shrubster

How typical....Leon just throws out some liberal talking points, then gets smacked to the wall....crickets chirping.   Too easy today.

We need a better class of troll, here.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Shinseki (not Shineski)

Shinseki (not Shineski) also wanted to abolish the tank (as though Russia, China, and North Korea suddenly vanished in a puff of smoke).  And unlike his so-called Iraqi strategy, he actually put that in writing.

You may be referring to a memo from the Chief of Staff's office to Donald Rumsfield (SOD designate) from 2000.  This memo refers to "a study" designed to evaluate the current force structure to make the army "more nimble," which is pretty much what and had little to do with the current war much less the Iraqi Theater of Operations.  If one is familiar with how the pentagon does business, one would know that these "studies" and "reviews" have been performed every year since the end of WWII.

So why isn't Shinseki given credit?  Because its not always what you have but what you do with it.  (You may find this out for yourself one day when you move out of Mom's basement and start talking to these people called "girls.")  The 15-20% increase is troop strength is a far cry from the 300,000 that he said we needed.

Let me further spell it out for you:  The current plan is not his plan.

Whines addressed

Because Shinseki didn't apply the strategy.  You can think of strategies all day long, but if you don't apply them, what good are they?

Now on to the rest you your whimpers and whines, all because instead of coddling you with a Nanny State, we are defending the country.

He took another General's idea that if we had followed when it was proposed we would have avoided an unknown amount of violence and death.  Alfred Thayer Mahan once said that "The study of history lies at the foundation of all sound military conclusions and practice."  Fact is, if you are in the military, it is quite wise to take other's ideas and apply them.  That is why so many of us spend so much time looking at history.

And unlike you I understand wholeheartedly that violence and death solves LOTS and LOTS of problems.  Violence is time tested and true and ALWAYS works.  If it doesn't, that's because you aren't being violent ENOUGH.  (We could take a page from the Mongols, as they conquered the Middle East quite effectively, but the methods they used will make you cringe with total fear, as our methods today already make you very squeamish.)

All Petraeus did was use another General's idea 5 years late.    All Жуков did on the Eastern Front during the Great Patriotic War was dispense with the reactionary thinking of the generals on the front that got the Red Army into so much trouble in WWII.  Does he get any less credit?  No.

More soldiers will decrease violence?  No way!   Actually, the same amount of soldiers as before being more violent would decrease violence, but that is clearly lost on you.  Besides, I really can't see why someone as anti-Iraq war as you is bitching so much.  (Other than bitching for thr sake of bitching, for which we can rely upon you to do.)
