Consumer spending in the U.S. rose in November by the most in more than two years as incomes grew and shoppers took advantage of early holiday discounts. A bigger-than-forecast 1.1 percent increase in purchases followed a revised 0.4 percent gain in October that was more than previously estimated, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. The diversity of this nation has show in the modern age we can tolerate cultures, their celebrations and traditions. Most people I talk too and work with who do not celebrate Christmas have no problem with a Merry Christmas being said to them. It is the small minded minority of secular progressives who find it offensive and, as DFTT so eloquently pointed out, show a great intolerance toward those who do celebrate. You will support a Muslim celebrating Ramadan but could care less about a Christian. You would shake the hand of an atheist or Wicken but shun a follower of Christ. Tolerance means : the act of allowing something. It does not mean avoiding an action. Of course tolerance is a two-way street! Now it has been turned on its head, so that it means not giving offense, and avoiding doing anything with which someone else might not agree. So unless it's something that everyone can agree on, it's a no-go. I don't know how we got to this point, but it stinks. The Constitution forbids the establishment of a state religion. It also guarantees the free exercise of one's religious beliefs. It does not say "as long as no one is offended by it." There is no guarantee of freedom from offense in the Constitution.
