Yes and yes. Let's pick
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 11:01 ET by sublight68Yes and yes.
Let's pick a time and stick with it. We live in a 24/7 world now -- if the original intent of Daylight Savings was to conserve energy by having more evening sunshine less electricity use, we've moved past that.
We're working and living 'round the clock, no matter if it's light out or not.

When NC first started going
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 11:15 ET by ricklailWhen NC first started going to DST I heard a lot of the old farmers around where I grew up call it Damn Democrat time. It didn't matter to them. They were up at 4 to start milking and ready for bed around 8. The sun not setting to around 9 messed that up. I can't see how it saves engery. My wife gets up at 5 to go drive her school bus. It is dark so she has to have lights. I get up at six and it is still dark.
Did anybody happen to catch the report about more pedestrian deaths because of DST? Where do they get such stuff? Maybe I can see that with schools buses picking up kids while it is still dark.

I believe it's a myth that DST is for the farmers
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:27 ET by RJIf I remember it correctly, the sporting and entertainment fields were the groups that fought hardest for DST....in order to increase sales and participation in their industries.
Personally, I've always disliked DST because, first, it disrupts our normal biological clocks (watch how long it takes kids to adapt each time) and, second, because I miss the old long summer evenings.
The dairy farmers didn't
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:51 ET by ricklailThe dairy farmers didn't like it where I grew up. Because they had to get up so early they wanted to go bed early. Most of them could not sleep in the light. In June, during DST, it would stay light until about 9 to 9:15. That is why they called it Damn Democrat time. The Democrats controlled NC. The big money in farming was in tobacco. That was grown mostly in the east. The tobacco farmers didn't have to get up at 4 to start milking.

Sun, 11/04/2007 - 20:31 ET by MikeBYou're right on, RJ. For the farmers? My gluteus maximus it is. Hey, bureaucrats, I have a news flash for you: neither cows nor chickens nor hogs nor any other livestock have wrist watches, so they don't care what time it is. And, if you disturb their schedules, they tend to get cranky. Seeds and plants don't care what time it is, either. They respond to the sun, not to some government fool. And, many farmers work sunrise to sunset (on a short day). During harvest, they'll work from before sunrise to after sunset in order to get crops in before they ruin. Been there, done that.

I believe it doesn't make sense to go to DST in the Spring. Perhaps, it was justified during the war (WWI) because there were a lot of facilities that didn't have electricity, but now it makes little sense. Obviously, you can justify anything, however I would love those who claim this saves energy and is good for the economy, to justify it with real facts. The only way to know for sure would be to not do it for a few years and see if there's a difference.

101st Airborne
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:20 ET by ricklailI made some comments about the 101st the other week. Yesterday I bought a CD with songs from the 60's and 70's that include a DVD on the 1st CAV in Vietnam. I didn't know that it was the 101st that took and secured highway 19 so the Airmobile CAV could establish their first base in Nam. The 101st was moving so fast they got too far ahead of their artillery. The Air Cav came in to give them the first support by copters so they could keep trucking. This was in September of 65. That is what the movie We Were Soldiers is about. I went in the Army in May 69. Nam didn't really hit home to me until I attended the funeral of the co-captain of our 1967 football team in Nov of 69 who had been killed in action.

I'm very curious as to what
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 11:51 ET by JasonCI'm very curious as to what the NB community will think of this story which is apparently becoming a hot issue around Boston, where I recently relocated.
http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2007/11/04/a_human_face_on_a_big...
I'm not a diehard anti-WalMart type, but I do think there's something sort of obscene about the #1 retailer in the country invoking the rhetoric of victimhood and trying to build this grassroots support network. I mean, obviously they're going to try whatever means necessary to keep those boxstores popping up all over the landscape, but this tactic of rallying loyal customers through the idea that they're being oppressed or something is just ludicrous.
Thoughts?

just as the anti-Walmart
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:03 ET byjust as the anti-Walmart socialists sponser legislation to oppose my right to free-association in where i choose to spend my money; Wal-mart has a right to protect it's business interest.
I think the real question is how does anyone justify banning stores based on size?
GoHunter08
I don't see any problem
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:08 ET by JasonCI don't see any problem with a community coming together and rallying the support of their elected representations to say "No, we don't want that here; it's ugly, it will mess up our generations-old businesses, and they persecute those who even think of the U-word." Surely people have the right to do that. And surely WalMart has the right to retaliate in its typical way, but I do think that this little army it's putting together is just depressing; how sad to think that one's top priority, the thing they are willing to devote time and energy to, is telling another community that they'd better allow WalMart in. And again, hearing the million-dollar-salary spokepeople adopt this posture of victimization is laugh-out-loud ironic.

Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:22 ET by JasonCWow. I explicitly said that it is OK. That they have every right to do what they want to get those boxstores built. God knows there aren't enough, after all.
My point is that, similarly to how NB derides the MsM's rhetoric and claim to objectivity, I feel compelled to deride WalMart's posture as some sort of victim or champion of consumer choice. They have had nothing but spectacular success in the business world, but that doesn't mean they should have a free pass in every single community or on every single issue. My other point is that I find it massively depressing that people who like WalMart think this is an issue that they should volunteer their time for. Like they owe something to this retail behemoth.

That political opposition
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:42 ET by JasonCThat political opposition is worthless if a community's constituents aren't behind it. If they want a box store in their community, and WalMart is considering building one, they'll get it.
BOTG, I think there's a big difference, on the "depressing" angle between people who are volunteering their time for WalMart to help them build stores in other communities, and viewing themselves as being David to the oppostion's Goliath, and those who band together to retain the small businesses and independent economy of their town. The former is mobilized to do WalMart's dirty work for them, the jobs their lawyers ought to be doing. The latter is fighting for civic pride and against what amounts to an economic invasion.

I don't know where those
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 12:55 ET by JasonCI don't know where those places are, so I'm not sure what your point is. If it's merely that anti-WalMart activists are shipped in from other places to rally against one being built in a community that doesn't affect them, well yes, that's not exactly ideal is it. But my previous statement, which you were good enough to embolden in your post, still stands. There's a long tradition of people who actually live in a community trying to keep WalMart out and securing the help of their elected officials to do so. That's how it's supposed to work. And usually, they fail and the store gets built. My point is that there may be growing anti-WalMart sentiment in the country, but it's pretty ridiculous for that particular corporation to act like it doesn't get its way 95% of the time. I do not see their fight as a glorious free market rights struggle against some powerful cabal of anti-WalMart activists, but that's how they seem to be framing it.

I believe the true opposition to Walmart comes from city councils who are beholden to the Union leadership (as happened in San Diego last year). It is a power-play by the unions to syphon 5% off Walmart salaries (and you are their acting dupe)

Sun, 11/04/2007 - 13:26 ET by JasonCI'm not much of a dupe, I bought salad tongs there last month. It's not WalMart in and of itself I'm arguing about here, it's there ridiculous stance on this issue of community opposition.

Sun, 11/04/2007 - 13:05 ET by MikeBYou go, Wal-Mart.
While I would rather Wal-Mart offered a lot more products made in this country and a lot fewer products made in PRC, they do provide a much larger selection of goods than most stores.
Unfortunately, due to incredible short-sightedness on the part of American Labor Unions, too many jobs have relocated overseas, as Labor has priced itself out of the market over here.
The short-sightedness does not stop with labor unions, either. There are many town and city councils afflicted with myopia when it comes to Wal-Mart. Allow me to illustrate.
Once upon a time, in the far off land of Oklahoma, there were three towns: Seminole, Wewoka, and Holdenville. The three towns were all on the same highway, with Wewoka being 12 miles from Seminole, and Holdenville was 6 miles from Wewoka. None of them were large towns, they had similar populations, and they had the same basic economy: petroleum, cattle, and pecans. Farmers around Holdenville also raised peanuts. One day, a representative from Wal-Mart came to Wewoka and said to the city council, "We'd like to build a Wal-Mart store in your town." Now the local merchants knew they couldn't compete with Wal-Mart, and so they told the city council, "We don't want Wal-Mart in our town. We couldn't survive the competition." So, the city council of Wewoka told Wal-Mart to take a hike.
So, the representative from Wal-Mart took a hike...down the highway to Seminole, where the Seminole city council told the Wal-Mart representative that they would welcome a store in their town. Holdenville also told Wal-Mart that they would welcome their store. So, Wal-Mart built stores in Holdenville and in Seminole. Lo and behold, when the stores opened up, the consumers in Wewoka saw that the Wal-Mart stores in Seminole and Holdenville offered a greater variety of goods than were available in Wewoka stores. They also saw that where Wal-Mart stores offered the same items available in Wewoka, the items cost less at Wal-Mart. So, people in Wewoka started driving the 6 or 12 miles necessary to shop at a Wal-Mart store. Soon, the city council of Wewoka noticed that revenues from sales taxes had gone down considerably. There was not enough money to maintain the streets in Wewoka, nor was there enough to maintain and upgrade the water treatment plant, the water distribution system, maintain the police cars and fire trucks, etc., etc. Wewoka tried to attract businesses to the town so as to enhance tax revenues, but when prospective businesses saw the poor roads and infrastructure, they decided to go elsewhere.
Today, Seminole and Holdenville, because they were business friendly and welcoming to competition have grown. They have fairly decent roads and streets, adequate water supply distribution, and fairly effective emergency services. Wewoka, who had prior to Wal-Mart coming to the area had looked down their noses at the other two towns, is now mostly a bedroom community for the city of Seminole. Their largest industry, if it can be called that, is the Welfare department. All this because the city council couldn't see beyond the end of their collective nose.

The fight in Havelock, NC
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 16:12 ET by ricklailThe fight in Havelock, NC is not over the new Wal Mart but rather a stop light. Years ago the powers that be in Raleigh decided that there were getting to be too many stoplights on US 70 east. This is the main route from Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area to the Crystal Coast beaches. In order to put in a stoplight in a new location one must come down somewhere. Wal Mart told the Havelock that they would build a store there if they could get a stoplight. No problem. The town would just move the light from Ketner Blvd. The people there could use the service road on either side to get to the next intersection where there is a stoplight.
If you are not familiar with the area, Havelock is home to MCAS Cherry Point and Fleet Readiness Center East-formerly called NADEP. There is a big market there. Either way the folks went it was about 16 miles to the nearest Wal Mart in New Bern or Newport. The Natives are not mad over Wal Mart. They are mad over the stop light. I want to see if they are mad enough to start sending Republicans to the NC House next time.
By the way, the area is going to grow more over the next few years. The Marine Corps is increasing the squadrons at Cherry Point. Wal Mart had made a wise choice by putting a store there.

Hillary's sister Eleanor Rodham Clift, whose speaking voice is so similar to Hillary's it's scary, was spinning so rapidly her head almost came off. She compared Hillary's debate problems to Bill Clinton's "triangulating" as President.
Eleanor's most hilarious line? "She's a big girl. She can handle it."
And when McLaughlin mentioned the poll showing 50% of those queried would never vote for Hill, Eleanor quoted one poll that said:
"She beats Giuliani by 9 points. That poll is more relevant."
Only problem is, I just went to www.pollingreport.com and could not find a poll showing her beating Rudy by 9 points.

Why not adjust the time 30
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 13:03 ET by NonanonWhy not adjust the time 30 minutes and leave it at that all year?
If we clean up or burn off all of the underbrush and dead fuel that has been accumulating for the last century or so, wouldn't we then be able to correct our actions and let less intense forest fires burn and do what they are intended to do now? Then regardless of how the climate changes, the results would be less disastrous. But the hysteria being shouted now about how bad the fires will be in the future due to 'global warming' seems to be ignoring the reality that once the fires consume the dead fuel, it isn't there for a new fire to use! And if droughts are the result of 'GW', new brush will not grow at a fast rate to be dried out and become new fuel. But then there is the confusion over wether GW causes droughts or floods, heat waves or cold snaps, or more or fewer storms, since everything is now blamed on GW.
I saw a portion of hearings on GW by Pete Starkey on C-Span and he had four 'witnesses' giving 'testimony' that simply said the same thing and the smirk on his face spoke volumes about his views about the subject. There appears to be no interest in even hearing any opposing view much less acting with any kind of caution. They are just going to rush headlong into this without any other perspective.
Something Interesting
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 14:59 ET by BlondeHere's some good news.
The King Tut exhibit is returning to the U.S. after London. This is a "bonus" tour for us, as the exhibit was supposed to return permanently to Egypt.
I saw this two years ago, it was fabulous. I'd encourage anyone who's close to go see it, it's a once in a lifetime thing (unless you're planning to visit Egypt). The article only mentions Dallas, I'm not sure where else it's going to be this time around. The official tour site only mentions Dallas.
Oh, and if you go, try to get tickets for the first "session" in the morning. It gets totally packed as the day goes on.

Sun, 11/04/2007 - 17:45 ET by ricklailJust got to watch bonus coverage of the Packers-Chiefs. How bout Brett Farve? I love to watch him. Don't get to see him that much because we are in the Panthers coverage area. They stunk up my TV today. Need a QB bad. I know now why the Texans got rid of Carr. He sucks.
The Thanksgiving game between the Pack and the Lions is shaping up to be more than something to have on in the background while preparing dinner. I'll have watch that one. Could be better than the year that Clint Longley came off the bench in Dallas and beat the snot out of the Skins. Never have been many good games on Thansgiving. The best games are usually the rivalries in college on Friday and Saturday.
Congrats to Brett for being only the 3rd QB to beat all 31 other teams in the NFL.

Watch Out...
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 20:44 ET by Del DolemonteThe Panthers have a decent QB, namely Jake. But injuries happen.
One of the Panthers' NFC South competitors, the New Orleans Saints, just won their 4th game in a row after starting 0-4. Brees had 445 yards of passing, and Reggie Bush had a couple of TDs.
And yes, folks, the New England Patriots are FOR REAL. I'm watching Belichik's press conference right now, and he's low-key and quiet as usual. But he must be happy as a clam, as the Pats now have home field against Indy in the playoffs. Can you say "9-0"?
Del, did you hear the announcers discuss
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 20:52 ET by RJthat this group of referees is prone to calling "pass interference?" I thought for sure that that bogus call against Moss would kill the Pats....but they came back.
No, I Missed That
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 22:40 ET by Del DolemonteI always turn the teevee sound down and listen to the Patriots radio team. That would be play by play legend Gil Santos, who first did Pats games in 1966 (later taking a 10 year break to do Penn State football and NFL play by play for CBS and ABC before returning to the Pats booth for good in 1990). Gil's color guy is Patriots receiver (and also placekicking legend) Gino Cappelletti, who until 2 years ago was the Patriots alltime leading scorer.
PS, I gave up on interpreting pass interference calls many years ago.
Well, at least that really bad call didn't affect the outcome
Sun, 11/04/2007 - 23:02 ET by RJof the game....BTW, I don't know if your announcer mentioned it, but the calls against the Pats tonight broke a team record.

Sun, 11/04/2007 - 19:32 ET by ckc1227"My other point is that I find it massively depressing that people who
like WalMart think this is an issue that they should volunteer their
time for. Like they owe something to this retail behemoth."
Maybe their doing it has nothing to do with WalMart. See, some folks are against wrong-doing period, whether the victim is a homeless guy living in the street, or a multi-billion dollar corporation. Maybe they don't think it's okay to stick it to someone 5 percent of the time just because that same someone may get their way 95 percent of the time. I know I don't. I don't think it's okay to screw people over 5 days out of 100, just because you leave them alone the other 95.
And, maybe, just maybe, some of them are smart enough to know that they're getting screwed too, and they don't like it, especially when the only point for this nonsense is satisfying the wet dreams of yet another wacko environmentalist.
"I'm not a diehard anti-WalMart type, but I do think there's something
sort of obscene about the #1 retailer in the country invoking the
rhetoric of victimhood and trying to build this grassroots support
network."
I think there's something obscene about believing you can't be a victim if you're successful. And why the pretense? Even though you said differently, it's pretty clear that you ARE anti-WalMart(or is it all successful companies?), so why not be honest about it?
From the article:
"Norman estimates 46 Wal-Mart projects were blocked in 2006 and says the
approval process for new stores has slowed considerably. "What used to
be a three-month process is now a three-year process," he said."
Sound familiar to anyone? Yet Jason would have us believe that WalMart is the bad guy here because they won't roll over and take it in the a**, lol. How DARE you, WalMart, encourage your supporters to voice their opinion. Wonder how much extra this extended timeframe costs WalMart? Baaahh, who cares, they've got the money, so it's okay to rip them off for a few million bucks or so.
I recommend you seek help, Jason. Seriously, I do. If you're are so invested in the actions of total strangers who are choosing to devote their time in a cause they believe in that you are driven to "massive" depression over it, WalMart is the least of your problems. And the good thing is, if you can hold on until after 2008, Hillary will pay for it.
Good luck, bud, and avoid sharp objects. ;)

BUSH POLL # ONLY HALF EXPLAINED
Mon, 11/05/2007 - 08:33 ET by reelman46BUSH POLL
#: LIBMEDIA POUNDING ONLY HALF THE STORY
We constantly hear Bush is in the 28-35% approval range…some folks
insist its 6 years of libmedia pounding…
I submit about half of his horrid poll numbers are because:
1… He did not act on conservative principles 80%+ of the time
2… He is silent when hammered unfairly by (easily rebutted) liberals
3… He trusted unworthy liberals like Teddy to write bills
4… He backed a dangerous immigration bill
5… He again nosed (as presidents like to do) in education at the
classroom level
6… He appointed (initially) a bad SC choice when there were much better
options
7… He “never sees the punch coming and deflects it”
8… He expects liberals to act civil and reasonable
9… He failed to veto the 6 years congressional pork-a-thon to buy votes
10.. He has few new ideas when there are lots to bring forth (Fair Tax
and others)
11.. He stopped going to the people very much with positions and ideas,
etc… to pressure the dufus Cingress
Bottom line: He has failed for years to gain the consistent support of
conservatives.
Now he is making some fiscal conservative noise about vetoes…where was
your spine for 6 years?
