Saturday Sports Open Thread

Is this the most boring Saturday for College Football yet this season?

Honestly, other than LSU vs. Alabama and ASU vs. Oregon, what's to get excited about this morning?

As such, what do folks think about the Dodgers hiring Joe Torre? Also, did A-Rod blow it by telling the Yankees to take a hike, or is there some other owner actually willing to pay him $350 Million?

Finally, will tomorrow's meeting between the Pats and the Colts live up to the hype? Could this end up being the best game of the year INCLUDING the playoffs? What are your predictions?

A-Rod

It makes you wonder:

1)  Was A-Rod embarrassed by the obscene amount of money he got in his last deal?  or

2)  Did he decide he couldn't deal with the expectations that came from such a large paycheck?  or

3)  Maybe for A-Rod, no amount of money made up for having to continue to be a Yankee?

Just wondering

The article does not mention cutting Torre. Rumors were floating for some time that free agents would exercise their options if their coach was dropped.

Sadam vs. Schwarzkopf on Sunday

Lots of people are predicting a combative, close game on Sunday. In fact, 4 of the 5 the ESPN "pickers" are chosing the Colts. I have to disagree. This is going to be like the 100-hour ground war against Sadam. The Patriots are going to pour it on. Consider the following:

  • Belichick hates the world right now. He's not only pissed off at the league's ruling and fines earlier this year, but he remembers last year's finals where the Colts blew past them in the final minutes. "Revenge is mine" sayeth Bill.

  • How many 5-0 teams has the Colts faced this year? Everyone thought the Dallas-Patriots game was going to be close. It was over in the first half.

  • In fact, nearly half of the Patriots games this year were over by halftime.

  • Last week, the Redskins lost 52-7. This, fans, was the fifth-best defense in the NFL; first in the NFC. Didn't matter.

  • The most amazing stat is the Patriots 5 TDs and 3 field goals during all 8 of their opening drives this year. This can't keep up; but the league is noticing, and the teams are doing their damndest to stop them. So far, without effect.

  • The Patriots haven't even used Moss to the full effect, yet. Yeah, he's leading the league in receiving yards and touchdowns; and he is drawing a crowd away from the other receivers. But Brady and Moss still haven't got the timing down for the long passes. When they do, watch out. Is this the week?

So as much hype as this game is getting, I look for it to be over very, very quickly. And then I look for Belichick to rub it in. This may be the best team ever. As Coach Gibbs said, "I can't see any weakness".

The Pat's arrogance will be

The Pat's arrogance will be their undoing, somebody will get tiered of it and beat them. They have a very good team, they play well together. But I also believe that when somebody starts hitting Brady they will buckle a bit. Unfortunately my Skins could not do it, but then the Skins play a bend but don't break defense. Maybe a more aggressive D like Pitt or even the Colts. One thing for sure, you had better bring some emotion, and be very physical, or else you will get the same as my Skins. But this is the NFL, they will get figured out, every one does.

BTW, Gibbs would not tell you what their weakness was even if he knew, none of the smart ones will.

LSU and Bama should be fun. I am a bit disappointed by how the media is suggesting that LSU fans hate Saban. We are very thankful for his work here, we understand why he left, and why he came back. The only regret was that he came back with our rival, but I think most of us are glad he is in the SEC. We want the best here!

What "arrogance", GC?

I agree with botg that someone sounds jeaous.

Belichick makes it a point to never verbally diss another team.  If you call it "arrogance" to play well on the field, well then maybe the Redskins should go play in one of the kiddie leagues where they don't keep score?

(Now they've been dissed, GC...)    :^)

I prefer green, as in envy

Belichick makes it a point to never verbally diss another team.

Name the quality coach that does? BTW is this the definition of arrogance? Anyone whom has watch the NFL for the last few years can see it, no exsamples are needed. Maybe the Skins should go play in the kiddie league, if thats the best they can do!

It was a question, GC

Maybe i wasn't clear. I meant it as a question, not giving the definition.   I was asking what you meant by his showing "arrogance."

Apparently, you think he's arrogant, and I'm trying to understand why you think that.

Was refering to Bill Belichick

and I'm trying to understand why you think that

Well, maybe it's because I have watched him answer more then just a couple of questions over the years. But other then that, he has been perfectly humble,,,,,kind like an arrogant humbleness?

I still don't get it, GC

I've heard him answer more than just a couple of questions over the years, too, but still don't see the "arrogance."   Do you have any examples of what you call his arrogance?

Not trying to pick a fight, but I really don't see him as arrogant.  Crusty, yes...demanding, yes....impatient, yes....not very forthcoming and keeps his own counsel, yes....his interviews are bland, yes....but how does that add up to "arrogance" (i.e. proud, haughty, self-important)

And just wondering: why would a proud, haughty, self-important coach wear that scruffy sweatshirt?  ;^)

I really don't see him as

I really don't see him as arrogant.  Crusty, yes...demanding, yes....impatient, yes....not very forthcoming and keeps his own counsel, yes....his interviews are bland, yes....but how does that add up to "arrogance"

Hhmm,,,,,,I dont know? But along with the cheating, bogus info on the injured, and complete insincerity, you might get boarderline arrogance? BTW this is football, all that one fan say's should be taken with a grain of salt. Including me.

So, you just don't like him...

....got it...   :^)

Sooo, since honesty and sencerity are important to you, wanna talk about an entire city of sneak thieves (Indianapolis) aiding a lying scum-bag in stealing a franchise and a heritage from another city?

NOW, we're talking about true "arrogance."

No, plus I dont mind his arrogance

I just think that is what will get them beat, gets them all beat. Usually it doesnt stop at just one either

I grew up a Colts fan, now I am a Skins fan, know what I mean? I also root for the Saints because this is where I live.

Belichik "Arrogant"?

Don't think so. I've seen just about every post-game press conference Bill has had since taking over the Pats team, and he's never come across that way.

If you can get the NFL Network on your cable system (or on satellite) they usually carry all of the post-game coach's press conferences either on Sunday or over the next few days. Watch a few of Bill's and you'll see he's no jerk.

PS, Geaux Saints! They've been my favorite NFC team since 1967.

But you still want to beat the snot out of Saban & his team for deserting you, yes?  We feel the same way about the ole Ball Coach.  I hadn't thought about Saban in that light before I read your post.  But you're spot-on.

Well?

But you still want to beat the snot out of Saban & his team for deserting you, yes?

I still hate Bama more, and Spurrier dosent seem to bother me near as much as he used to.

Guess Again

People said the exact same thing about those great 49ers teams, but they kept right on winning (and running up the score to boot).

Several keys to this game-New England is 0-3 against Indy in their last three meetings. Coach Bill rarely loses 4 games in a row to the same team.

The Pat's Rodney Harrison missed all three of those losses (except for several plays in one game). He'll be playing tomorrow. He's also healthy, as he had to sit out the first four games due to suspension for alleged use of HGH.

On the other hand, Indy's Marvin Harrison may only see limited playing time.

The Pats are due to beat Indy, and I think they probably will.

All of the below

The college football season is basically over until the worthless bowl games which prove nothing.

Torre being hired by the Dodgers is an ok move providing the Dodgers put the money behind the Torre, because while he is a very good manager ..........he manages very good only with large contracts.
Consider Gardenhire of Minnesota what he does without half the salary.

Al Rod has opened the door to baseball finally killing the high salary goose which is a good thing. Hopefully this will spread to football.
Owners have been squirming under these quarter of a billion dollar salaries and now will unite in an effort to "kill Arod" off so effectively that no one else will pedal themselves on the market.

Josh Becket of the BoSox is worth that kind of money, but not a baseman who could not propel his team into the World Series. No batter or defensive player is worth that in baseball as he is only one bat.
So in conclusiong Al Rod has screwed not only himself but the entire baseball players union.

The Colts will be without a healthy Marvin Harrison so the game is not full fare.........and until football's fake defenses against the Patriots who are set up to be the exciting team to watch for publicity like that fake baseball homerun race a few years ago........none of this matters.
Plainly put, put that fornicator Brady on his butt, hit the wide receiver corp on the line hard and MUG THEM LIKE THE PATRIOTS DO OTHER TEAMS and the Patriots will loose. They have no running game and if you look their defense could not even stop Miami from scoring.

The Patriots are a farce just like Randy Moss is a farce in his numbers from Minnesota were only this good when defenses did not play him. The minute that Green Bay plastered him at Minnesota, Randy Moss quit playing as he was "hurt". No one is hitting Moss with effect.

What? This is the best season in a long time, and just how are the Bowl games "worthless"? My favorite football are those worthless bowl games.

I do however agree about how to play the Pats, watching Moss push off in the endzone last week, along with the defencive holding 10 yrds down the field prooves to me that teams should start pushing them around a bit, forcing the refs to make these calls.

I didn't get to see the ND game. The local NBC affiliate carried the ECU-Memphis game. My Marine son-in-law is from Indiana. He is big on ND and the Colts. I hope the Colts lose so I can call him tomorrow and rag his ass. He has given me hell over the Heels and the Panthers. I wonder when the last time was that the Irish and the Colts lost on the same weekend.

The Heels beat the Terps. Just proves that even a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while.

After last week's debacle

I'm still terribly disappointed with my Gators.  Fortunately, we have Vandy today....maybe we'll win one we're supposed to.  Although after last week, I'd venture to say there are no more doormats in the SEC East.

It's been a crazy season all the way around.

As for LSU vs. Bama...that's a hard pick.  Gotta go with LSU, but only because they beat us.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

I was wondering

I am wondering how crazy the b-ball season is going to be. Mich State lost last night to Grand Valley State I believe it was. I know there are going to be losses by the majors to the mid-majors but a Division II school beating a Division I school in the first game?

This football season can't get any crazier. Think about this. If OSU goes undefeated until they play Mich, Mich wins, Mich would have lost to the # 1 team in Division I-AA and beaten the # 1 team in the BCS rankings.

Here's what else may be crazy. Tenn in the SEC championship game. This after me talking most of the season about Phat Phil looking for a new home next season.

My Heels are # 1 in b-ball so all is right in the wide wide world of sports

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Go Sun Devils! Pluck the Ducks!

As crazy as this season has been, we might as well root for Erickson to get another National Championship.

It doesn't look as though my wish for an LSU-OU title game is going to pan out, and the thought of Oh-How-I-Hate-Ohio State winning the title is galling.

Besides, someone has to shut off this "Dennis Dixon for Heisman" blather I've been hearing for the last week.

Actually, the Pitt and Penn

Actually, the Pitt and Penn State games are on right now, and are actually not too bad. Both games are tied in the 3rd quarter. Plus, there are two good Big East games tonight: Rutgers/UConn and Cincy/South Fla.

Pitt freshman RB McCoy just became the first Pitt freshman since Swervin' Curvin Richards (1988) to have 1,000 yards. He needs about 400 yards in the next 4 games to beat Tony Dorsett's 1973 record.

Too bad I cannot see the Wisconsisnn/OSU game that is tied 10-10 in the 3rd quarter.

Meanwhile, Div III Mount Union is playing John Carroll right now, and is leading 26-0 in the first quarter. They have outscored their opponents 432-24 to start 8-0. Booyaa!

Me either?

Too bad I cannot see the Wisconsisnn/OSU game that is tied 10-10 in the 3rd quarter.

Me either, whats up with that, I got Purdue and Penn St and NW and Iowa in the Big10?

Beats me. I live 3 hours

Beats me. I live 3 hours east of Columbus, and usually get OSU games. Who wants to watch crap Northwestern?

roger--forgive me----

"I live 3 hours east of Columbus,"

By train, car, ship, plane or philosophically????

Sorry   lol!!!!!

That would be three hours

That would be three hours via unladen African swallow.

We can't get our local game either

ESPN has put the sold-out UCONN/Rutgers game on ESPNU, which most of CT doesn't get.  In fact, half our games are on ESPNU.

The UCONN AD says it's because ESPN is trying to pressure the local cable company to carry ESPNU, a charge that ESPN (of course) denies.

Could you have the same programming power play going on there?

Who is . . .

Sr. Belichick y sus Patriots!

Sports Weekend

Hey, college football, no one mentioned the Seminoles playing BC, in Boston.  If the 'Noles wake up, BC may be in trouble.

Patriots and Colts - Patriots lost by 4 last year, they've added some really, really good players to the line-up and lost little, this should be a win.  If nothing else, this game should tell everyone whether the Patriots are as good as they appear.

Joe Torre - We'll see what he can accomplish without unlimited funds, he could turn out pretty good, since unlimited funds usually came with unlimited opinions.

Democrats: Specializing in "high tech lynching" since 1987.

Right now I think that

Right now I think that Boston has the Colt's horseshoe up their butt. The Sox win the series, the Pats probably beat Indy and may even go undefeated, don't see anybody in the ACC beating BC now, and the Celtics win their opener with balanced scoring-a team effort. I don't know anything about the Bruins. I hate to say it but Boston, home of John Kerry, is the best sports town in the US right now.

Here is one saving grace if you like the Colt's. It seems that the teams I picked 90% of the time this year has been the loser. So I may have just jinxed the Pats. We'll see tomorrow.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Weather Will Determine BC Outcome?

The weather in Chestnut Hill will be downright nasty tonight for the BC game. Noel is up here now.

As for the poor stepchild forgotten team of the Hub, the Bruins are 7-4 so far this year.

As I said above, Belichick and the Patriots have lost the last three games to the Colts. I doubt they'll go 0-4.

And last but not least, my Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, who have this weekend off, are now ranked #12. Auwe!

I wouldn't worry over it.

I wouldn't worry over it. FSU is not the FSU of yesteryear. BC played a great 4 minutes in a blowing rain storm in Blacksburg. They can handle it. Besides it is probably cold too. FSU does not like the cold. As it goes, BC beat Wake. Wake creamed FSU. So BC should win and big. BC and VA Tech are about the only thing that the ACC has going for it this season. I would really like to see BC in the national championship game and Matt Ryan walk out of NY with the Heisman under his arm. Would bring some of the glory back to ACC football.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Waether's Not Bad

I didn't see that one

I didn't see that one coming. FSU has been crummy about all season. Good thing I don't bet my feelings, I'd be broke. I don't care who you are, OSU, LSU, if you turn the ball over like BC did you are going to lose. Oh well there goes their chance at a BSC championship. They are still in the running for the ACC cahmpiosnship. Probably will meet VA Tech there. They should be proud of their season. New head coach and Ryan is  still in the Heisman hunt. WHen Noel pulled away north it turned out to be a beautiful day here.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

It is Bush’s fault that

It is Bush’s fault that my West Craven Eagles lost to the Havelock Rams 8-0 at Havelock last night. The game was played in sustained tropical force winds as a result of Hurricane Noel. The Eagles are primarily a passing team. They couldn’t throw the ball in the high winds. Because Bush caused global warming and GW caused Noel then it is his fault they lost.

There could also be another reason-the Iraq War. Many of the players on Havelock have a parent(s) in the Marines or Navy. One of the squadrons from Cherry Point just returned this week from the war. Last night’s game may have been the first time and the last that they would get to see their sons play this season. (Havelock is not going to the state playoffs.) The kids played their hearts out. Since Bush is to blame for the war, then again he has to take the blame for the great showing by the Rams.

Here’s one more reason to blame Bush. The pairings for the NC high school playoff won’t be set until tomorrow. Noel caused postponement of several games in the northeast part of the state. Those games won’t be played until this afternoon and tonight.

Does this all sound rather silly? That is exactly how a lib would look at it.

I see it how it really was- a one dimensional team not being able to play their game going up against a team with nothing to lose and nothing to gain other than winning this cross county rivalry.

No predictions today other than when Noel pulls out of here, the sky will be a deep and beautiful Carolina Blue. Blonde can tell you about how deep and clean the sky looks after a storm.

Had to go with the wife to Greenville to do some Christmas shopping. Had to find something called Happy Feet for the youngest granddaughter and some Hannah Montana stuff for the middle one. So I am behind on today’s games.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

"Hurricane Noel"?

Last I looked, Noel was still rated as a Tropical Storm. When was it promoted? (Or did Bush do that?)

Sorry to hear about the loss, but at least you can console yourself with some of that NC BBQ I miss so much.

Let me see if I can explain

Let me see if I can explain it the way our weather dude did. The winds did get to hurricane strength but because it was in a sub-tropical zone or an extra-tropical zone it wasn't officially a hurricane. The high winds stayed off shore. We didn't have the sustained tropical force winds right here but just 16 miles east they did.

By the way, I can't stand the eastern NC BBQ. I was raised on the good stuff from west of Raleigh. The only time I get good BBQ is when I am back at my folks or my daughter brings some down when she comes from Bridges in Shelby,  RO's in Gastonia or Hillbilly's in Gastonia. I don't particularly care for the stuff in Lexington. It is overrated.

Here's something that won't cost you anymore. In the western part of the state we cooked the hams and the shoulders over hickory coals. We used a tomato based sauce on it after it is cooked. Usually served with cole slaw and hush puppies. Down here in the east they cook the whole hog over gas usually. They inject the meat while cooking with vinegar. They then make a vinegar based sauce with hot peppers to put on the already soggy stuff. They serve it with potatoes cooked in tomato sauce and cornbread sticks.  Anybody with any sense knows that vinegar is for salads and turnip or mustard greens. Tomato bases like ketsup or 57 sauce are used on meats. If you want nasty there is a place in Columbia, SC that makes a mustard based sauce. I can take the vinegar based better than that.

As for the stuff from around Lexington, NC I don't know how they fix that.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

BBQ

Well, then perhaps the Moore County (named for a distant relative - how this branch ended up in the Pacific Northwest is a long story) area qualifies.

Although, I do think the best of the Lexington variety is the "shoulder only" (or, maybe I just like BBQ).

With the best basketball in the ACC - which is the best b'ball anywhere - and damned good BBQ, NC is as close to Heaven as mortals can get.

I guess am biased towards

I guess am biased towards the western style. I was raised on that. I don't ever recall eating BBQ in Moore County. They don't seem to know how to cook seafood here either especially shrimp and oysters.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Cook oysters?

No.

One does does not cook oysters.

One dons his waders, puts a knife in one pocket, a bottle of sauce in the other, and eats them where they live.

If you want to wind up in

If you want to wind up in the hospital that is the way to do it around here. We usually steam them open then put the sauce on and enjoy. If they don't open then they get thrown away. It has to do with the runoff in the estuaries. A lot of bad stuff in some of the waters. Just last week they were not allowed to harvest in certain areas.  I like them fired too.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Had an uncle who felt it

Had an uncle who felt it was better to be safe than sorry, so he'd fire up a charcoal grill and put them on it. Grab them the minute they popped open.

Hockey question

When it comes to hockey I know about as much about it as Hillary does about how a mech infantry battalion operates. When I was a kid my uncle took me to a game between the Charlotte Checkers and the Greensboro Generals. These two absolutely hated each other. The old saying " I went to a fight and hockey game broke out" was true when  they got together. I know the Hurricanes won the Lord Stanley's cup 2 years ago. I have a deaf sone who when he was about 4 he saw a hockey game on TV. He asked me what that was. I didn't know the sign for hockey so I signed "skate fighting." Today at the age of 30 he still calls it "skate fighting."

Here's the question. Most teams are 10,11,12 games into the season. I was about half awake this morning when I heard that some team had just extended the contract of a player giving him 49 million over 7 years. He so far had one goal and 12 assists. This sounds expensive to me for that kind of production. Sort of like what the Yankees paid Clements for 6 wins. Do hockey teams generate that kind of bucks that they can pay out salaries like that? They don't seem to have major TV contracts and in this area you see very little mechandise.

Hey Rick

Missed you yesterday.

What do you think about FSU over BC?

More craziness.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Can you believe it? BC just

Can you believe it? BC just give it away too much. Can't win like that. I don't think it matters what FSU does the rest of the season. I think Bobby will be asked to step down even if they could somehow beat the Gators. I hated all those years that they dominated the ACC. Glad to see them near the bottom.

I think that when it's all over on Dec 1, Va Tech will be the ACC champs. They are back to playing Beamer Ball.

I was pulling for Bama. Would it have not thrown the SEC into more disarray if the Auburn-Bama game would not only be for bragging rights in Bama but also the chance to go to the SEC championship game?

Here's something else. If ECU wins their next two games, Marshall on the road and Tulane at home they would host the CUSA championship game On Dec 1 in Greenville. The area around here would go crazy. They hosted a super regional in baseball a couple years ago but never anything this big.

It has been crazy and there are 4 more weeks to go counting the conference championship games. Anything can happen. I am ready for the b-ball. Bring on DOOK.

Dunno, Rick

My crazy comrades in Garnet & Gold don't seem too comfortable with replacing Sr. Bowden.  I think he'll die on the field before they fire him.

Have you seen the Bobby Bowden insurance commercials?  Too funny.

As for the SEC, well, you & I are both in the Dog House for giggling publicly about Fat Phil.  I don't care, actually.  He deserves the scorn.

Paterno & Bowden

Quite frankly, Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno are each literally waiting for the other to die.

What is at stake is the All-Time win record.

Neither Bowden nor Paterno will retire before the issue is settled.

Who ever waits the other out will likely hold the record for many many years.

This is why neither of them will retire.

Go Buckeyes

I always am tickled by the amount of Ohio State Buckeye Hate Syndrome and jealousy that exists around the country. I actually consider it a compliment since it is always an indicator of a great teams existence.

The Buckeyes now hold the record for the team that is rated #1 the most times. They also hold the record for the most #1 draft picks from the NFL which betrays all logic about how they can be so successful year after year in spite of losing so many great players who leave early for the draft.

They also now hold the record for the most consecutive wins in the Big Ten.

SOOOOOO, lets go ahead and hear it now from all of the Johny Come Latelys who rail against a program that has been super successful before most of the others have ever been heard of.

By the way, though I hate to admit it, the NCAA sportswriters have always ranked the "all time historical football programs" as #1 - Michigan, #2 Notre Dame, #3 Ohio State, #4 Southern California, #5 Oklahoma.

Being from western PA, I

Being from western PA, I have a natural propensity to hate all-things-Ohio, but that ends when college football is concerned. OSU is bad-ass, and I love the small-school ball, too! From the MAC down to the OAC in D3.
I have nothing but props to give to the Buckeyes!
