Speaking of the children
October 26, 2007 - 10:10 ET by FastEdHas anyone else found it interesting, that recent votes, universal healtcare for instance, that the push was for the "children", yet these same folks refuse to enact legislation to actually protect the children - anti-preditor laws, Jessica Laws, etc.? And to add insult to injury, they stand for eliminating chidren at the start with pro-abortion talk. Nice to know that they have such specific "feelings" for the children.

October 26, 2007 - 10:39 ET by candanceThat's always the crux of their debates. No mention of where we'd get the money, how it might be organized, who decides eligibility, etc.
They throw up pictures of unhappy children and tell the American people there is only one solution. Then when Bush disagrees with them - not on the concept but simply on the details - they gloss over that stuff and say he hates children.
It's always the same story. Either we give governmental healthcare to every child in America, or millions of middle-class children will die of horrific diseases.
Either we allow free and confidential abortion to every female in America, or millions of teen girls will be molested by their uncle and die in a back-alley abortion.
Either we take any and all profit away from the evil oil companies, or global warming will flood the earth and everyone will die.

The price of oil topping
October 26, 2007 - 10:10 ET by BruzillaThe price of oil topping over $90 a barrel has proved one thing: What the oil companies said back in 2004 and 2005, about how oil reaching $70 a barrel was the reason that gas was over $3 a gallon, was total BS. They are now finally having to admit that it was speculation driving oil and gasoline prices all along, and that supply and demand issues were not.

We've already begun to curb our gasoline usage
October 26, 2007 - 10:13 ET by Bess2728in our family - we started that summer of 2006. I live in a small city and fairly near the downtown areas - I walk when I can - it's good exercise for me, fun for the kiddos, and saves the gasoline for use later. If my husband can pick up something for us on the way home from work, he will.
We've gone from over $200.00 a month for family gas usage to $50.00 a month.

October 26, 2007 - 11:08 ET by Evil CapitalistOh god, how stupid can people be?
For the vast majority of cars (cars that don't have nearly flat torque curve) slowing down means eating more and not less gasoline. Cars have transmission. It is RPMs that matter, not speed. Driving in a first gear will always eat gasoline per mile than driving in fifth or sixth!

October 26, 2007 - 11:23 ET by MikeBRead that post again, O Evil one. He recommended the slowing to prevent traffic deaths, not to save fuel. And, the recommendation was not serious in the first place.

It was not really directed
October 26, 2007 - 13:24 ET by Evil CapitalistIt was not really directed at the poster. If I had a dollar for every time I had to explain how driving slower uses more gas to an utterly amazed "drive slower" person, IRS would have gotten a much larger check from me.
People really do not understand that gas usage is a function of RPMs, not speed.
Driving
October 27, 2007 - 03:54 ET by UnsaneIndeed, a typical lawn mower uses more gas than a high-mileage car on the highway doing 65 mph. There IS a reason why the highway MPGs are higher than city mileage MPGs...

}}---> Wrong, evil capitalist
October 27, 2007 - 04:05 ET by Cool ArrowYour analogy would suggest all we need to do to solve the fuel efficiency would be to up the ratios in our cars.
A law of diminsishing returns exists here also.
And, yes, increased speed does eat more fuel per mile. The 55 mph spped limit was introduced exactly for that purpose.
RPM vs speed
October 27, 2007 - 04:11 ET by UnsaneWhy does increased speed eventually lead to more fuel consumption?
Higher RPMs required to maintain that speed.
You can also achieve that by driving, say, 35 mph in 2nd gear (I have only ever owned cars/trucks with sticks and tachs).

Forget Iran... I'm wondering
October 26, 2007 - 10:20 ET by BruzillaForget Iran... I'm wondering when the ever inquisitive MSM is going to get around to addressing the new 800lb gorilla in the room - what were the Syrians up to? The Iranians have been far more blatant in their nuclear program, and far more threatening to Israel, yet Israel talks a lot about attacking... does a lot of sabre rattling, but that's it. Then out of the blue, the Israelis go winging into Syria and level a site that no one really knew existed until then. The question that has to be asked is what could the Syrians have been doing at that site that was deemed to be so grave a danger to the Israelis that they attacked it?
The current conventional wisdom in the media is that the North Koreans had supplied some reactor technology and that the Syrians were trying to build a reactor. Does anyone else read that as total BS? Everything remotely connected to North Korean nuclear technology gets tracked by a wide array of intelligence organs, so how is it they could support the building of a reactor without anyone noticing? Also, the Iranians are much further along with their reactor, and the Israelis haven't attacked them.
I'm thinking the attack had nothing to do with a North Korean reactor, and everything to do with all the WMD technology, weapons, and equipment that Iraq had before we invaded and didn't have after. There have been plenty of reports that these weapons were shipped to Syria, and I think it's a safe bet they were being worked on at that site.
Bruz... Wow, you really
October 26, 2007 - 10:29 ET by bigtimerBruz...
Wow, you really gave me something to contemplate.
I have always believed that the WMD's were sent to Syria and have posted as such from day one, we have had too many reports of such, George Sada I think his name is, says he flew WMD's for Saddam to Syria, just did not know what they were exactly, he wrote a book on this, the media paid scant attention to... let alone the convoy of Russian vehicles going to Syria on video...it only makes sense.
Your scenario may be exactly right.

I read that piece this
October 26, 2007 - 14:29 ET by BruzillaI read that piece this morning, and I think it supports what I've been thinking. My big question is why are the Israelis and the U.S. government being so mum? I'm thinking that the political gain of pointing to the Syrians and saying "you wanted to know where Iraq's missing WMDs are? They're right there!" is outweighed by the political loss of having to admit that we now have a Syrian government with lots of WMDs, and having the Liberals say we, in effect, gave them to them by attacking Iraq.
Bruzilla, if the Libs did
October 28, 2007 - 13:41 ET by MikeBBruzilla, if the Libs did say that we "in effect, gave [WMDs] to [Syria] by attacking Iraq", the Libs would be admitting that there were, indeed, WMDs in Iraq just before the attack. This would reveal the Lib lie that "Bush lied, people died". No, there is another reason for the silence.

Valerie Plame wants bureaucratic autonomy
October 26, 2007 - 11:44 ET by KC MulvilleWait, it’s not so bad. And her argument is worth a thought, even if we disagree with her (which I do). Plame has been writing pieces for the Huffington Post, and she had one the other day about the CIA. Her argument is that the CIA and other intelligence agencies have become politicized.
Plame suggests that we remove intelligence agencies from executive control, and allow them to operate as independent units, like the Federal Reserve – all of the authority, but none of the politics. Like any proposal, it has pros and cons.
The intelligence community is a bureaucracy. Bureaucracies behave in predictable ways. For instance, bureaucrats are people who make careers in their field. Most of the time, they are experts, and we should listen to them. After all, that’s why we have them – we want a resource of experts, and that’s why we set up agencies in the first place. But that expertise also works against them. Bureaucrats see the world through their expertise, and that tends to sharpen their vision by making it narrower. They lose the big picture. And soon, you wind up seeing only what your training has taught you to look for. You become vulnerable to what you don’t expect (remember 9/11).
Now, here’s the point to worry about. I doubt Plame is alone. I’m certain that there are plenty of CIA staffers who feel exactly the same way she does. And let’s face it, the major problems of the Bush administration have come because of a huge disconnect between the administration and its own bureaucracies. Think of Katrina and FEMA. Think of 9/11 and the intelligence failures. Notice that the big management success is the recent surge in Iraq, because for the first time, the administration is finally coordinating the State department with the Pentagon into a unified effort.
Plame wants to unhook the bureaucracies from political administration – but that disconnect has been the problem all along. Look for this to come up again.

...Ahmadinejad was cheered by college students a few weeks ago – at least until he expressed eservations about sodomy. (On the basis of Ahmadinejad's claims, instead of looking for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, how about we start looking for gays in Iran?)
Even American intellectuals like Dennis Prager and Michael Medved who are speaking during Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week are denounced by liberals as if they were David Duke. One pro-Islamo-fascism website indicts Medved on the grounds that he "has claimed that Islam has a 'special violence problem.'" It doesn't get much more diplomatic than that.
Conservative speakers are constantly being physically attacked on college campuses – including Bill Kristol, Pat Buchanan, David Horowitz and me, among others. Fortunately, the attackers are Democrats, so they throw like girls and generally end up with their noses bloodied by pretty college coeds. But that doesn't make it right. ...
Remember those jumping for joy in Texas upon the decision in favor of the terrorists, the blog today which highlights libs who condemn Blackwater, or the congress people defining our military as guilty before going to trial?
Think again what the crosses and flags represent.
How many soldiers were wearing crosses when killed? How many were near our flag?

"We contacted those institutions, alerting them to the fact that their name was being used, and wondering what exactly was taking place. … It’s important to note though, after we contacted those institutions, most of those institutions indicated that no such events is taking place on those campus. And many contacted the sponsors and told them, “do not use my institution’s name in your campaign,” including some very renowned universities such as Yale and Princeton."

October 26, 2007 - 12:38 ET by ricklailHere's a little history lesson for today. There was an article in our local paper on the 100th Infantry Division. I know alot about the current active divsions history and some that have been disbanded like the 30th "Old Hickory." My grandfather fought with them in France. The 100th ID is interesting.
Here's a link to those "Sons of Bitche." It wouldn't be PC to call an Army division something like that today. If it was I'd call my old bunch, 2/7th Cav 1st CAV (Garry Owen), Ass Kicking Bastards.
You hear a lot about what the 101st Airborne (The Puking Buzzards) did at Bastonge but nothing about the 100th. What those Sons of Bitche did was just as important as to what the rest of the division did.

She is nuts....plain nuts.

Now they are talking about Red State banning Ron Paul bloggers on their site...and Rosa and Ann Kornblute are all gaga over him, although Rosa is not a Paul supporter, but really really likes him, she says thank God he is out there....(it is obvious she is supporting Hillary)
Tell me the looney leftists don't love Paul sarc...whereever you are.
