I read the story and typically, I'm wondering what the Breck Girl thinks HE should give up....maybe 12,000 square ft of his new 28,000 sq. ft. mansion? Not likely.
However
I never thought I would agree with anything he says, but he did say this:
Edwards got a standing ovation when he said weapons and equipment used
by America's military needs to be made in the United States. He says
tanks and ammunition for M16 rifles are being made in other countries.
And I have to say I agree with that. He probably said it to appease his union audience, but it makes sense. Our defense forces should not be at the mercy of other, possibly unfriendly countries, for needed parts and supplies. I've always thought that was insane.

August 29, 2007 - 10:36 ET by bassndudeI dont think the tanks are made in any other countries. The steel armor on the tanks are classified. As are the fire control and various other componets. To have those made in another country is asking for trouble. I must say, I do think Edwards in wrong on that point. As for ammo, most of the ball type ammo used by the military is made in the ammunition plants here in the states, at goverment facilities. And .223 sporting ammo is made nearly every where. So again, I think he is wrong. Now if the ammo plants cant keep up, then I do belive Remington, Winchester or one of the others would get the contract to help out. They are already set up and make .223 ammo anyway.

August 29, 2007 - 11:14 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveThat definitely raises an interesting question. Lockheed-Martin supplys the F-16 to 24 different nations...one of them is Venezuela. Granted, the F-16 isn't the cutting edge of military aviation any more, but it is still a highly capable and very effective weapon system.
H&K makes some of the best guns in the world. The MP-5 is a great sub-machine gun. I think we should use the best weapons available no matter who produces them. I think we run into problems when we don't have second and third options in case parts/service procurement becomes a problem. We can also buy licenses to build the same weapons/parts in American factories. A good example of weapons production licensing is the Walther PPK. Walther has licensed out the PPK (and variants) designs to numerous gunmakers world-wide. Smith & Wesson makes the Walther PPK/S for American sales...it has both Walther and Smith & Wesson brand names on it.

That's a slight distortion
August 29, 2007 - 13:56 ET by BruzillaThat's a slight distortion of the truth. The Japanese bought tons and tons of scrap metal from the US that was melted down, and some of it was turned into parts for planes and other weapons, but the planes didn't use US parts. Also, most of the scrap sold to Japan was steel, which was used pretty sparingly in their aircraft. Their planes were largely constructed of wood, fabric, and aluminum, which didn't come from the US.
You are largely accurate
August 29, 2007 - 14:50 ET by Hero SquadYou are largely accurate (although American-made propellers were found on Zeros that were shot down over Pearl Harbor). And I believe much of the scrap metal and parts that the Japanese purchased were from secondary markets. The point is then, should we not only restrict trade with countries with whom we are hostile, but also with countries who still practice open trade with countries that pose a threat to us?

Interestingly the AP recently wrote a story identifying small car purchasers as those willing to forgo safety in the interest of increased fuel standards. Cheerleading posing as journalism
August 29, 2007 - 10:58 ET by GrannyGrump42Check out this article in the Aurora (IL) Beacon News:
http://www.suburbanc...
The opening paragraphs sound like they came straight from a Planned Parenthood press release:
>>"A lack of women's health services in the region, particularly abortion providers, prompted a full-service Planned Parenthood medical office on Aurora's far northeast side.
Scheduled to open the middle of September, the medical complex will offer reproductive and women's health-care services, with an estimated 10 percent of that coming from abortions.
If women need abortion services now, many have to travel to Chicago's North Side, where Planned Parenthood operates a clinic, said Steve Trombley, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood/Chicago Area.
"Because of the limited number of providers unfortunately women have to travel long distances," he said."<<
The Beacon News then did a survey of local facilities to verify that alas, indeed, fetus-slaying is an unpopular activity among health care providers.
And in case you forgot how desperately the community needs for Planned Parenthood to set up shop, we get this other chunk that probably was quoted verbatim from a press release:
>>"Planned Parenthood's Trombley said staff at the new clinic will offer comprehensive women's health services, including gynecological services, birth control counseling and prescriptions, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, pelvic exams and Pap smears, cervical cancer testing, educational sessions for parents, community organizations and teens, and abortion services.
Educational sessions for parents, youth and community groups will be offered on topics like how to talk to children about sex, sex education, saying "no" to sex, dating violence and emotional issues involved in dating and sex.
"There's a need for this service," Trombley said, citing Aurora's population boom and burgeoning populations in Kane and surrounding counties. "Ninety percent of medical services are for preventative gynecological services. Only 10 percent of what we do relates to abortion services.""<<
That sounds like advertising copy, not news.
Then we get this:
>>"An Aurora women's health clinic had provided abortion services until it closed down last year. Louis S. Meyers was evicted in October 2006 from West Suburban Gynecology Clinic on Galena Boulevard in Aurora. Dr. Aleksander Jakubowski operated that clinic from 1991 until retiring in 2005.
About a month after Jakubowski opened his clinic, then at the old Copley Hospital building at Lincoln and Seminary avenues in Aurora, 16 people were arrested outside the clinic for criminal trespass and mob action. They had chained themselves to the front porch."<<
What they neglect to tell you is that Jakuboswki was such a seedy, greedy quack that a local feminist group tried to shut him down:
http://realchoice.0c...
I guess we'd hate to paint one of these compassionate and caring friends of women in an ill light.

From an article on Townhall--hoorah for Aussies--
Quote: "IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.
"However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the 'politically correct' crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia . However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of Australia being a multi-cultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. And as Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. Our culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.
"We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society .. Learn the language!
"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.
"We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.
"If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like 'A Fair Go', then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means keep your culture, but do not force it on others.
”This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian Beliefs, or Our Way Of Life, I encourage you to take advantage of one other great Australian freedom ....
“THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.
"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.”
I’ve confirmed the validity of the story, unreported in the American press as far as I can recall, by finding the following story in the Australian press regarding the Muslims’ response, here. Not surprisingly, they weren’t too enthusiastic.
Too bad.
What would be more heartening would be to see our own politicians emulate PM Howard’s approach to this issue – and by extrapolation to the other group of non-assimilators, illegal aliens – and put an end to this perpetual nonsense of the tail wagging the American dog.
A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.

CBS News, once called the ‘tiffany’ of news networks where news items were reported as if they were precious gems is, today, nothing more than a pawn shop where agendas are sold to the viewers like so much costume jewelry.
New Planned Parent abortion mill
August 29, 2007 - 12:37 ET by LionKingPlanned Parenthood may be in trouble for its latest abortion mill. Apparently they employed deceptive practices in order to get the permits to build the facility. I know...I was shocked that such a moral organization as PP would be decpetive.
Jill Stanek, outspoken pro-life activist, referred to the new abortion mill, the largest in the USA, as the "Auschwitz of America."

Maybe he'll give the eulogy. You know the swell MSM treated Jewell extremly well didn't they. They didn't dig into his past or make accusations against him that were unfounded now did they. This is why you should always trust the MSM and realize that they would never badmouth anyone who deserved to be recognized as a hero who actually probably saved some lives. No you should never give that person the recognition they deserve, and make sure not to apologize after you have treated someone extremly unfairly on the front pages of the newspaper, or the lead story on the nightly news.

New Hawaii Ferry Lasts 2 Days
August 29, 2007 - 18:40 ET by Del DolemonteThe company that runs the first passenger-vehicle ferry service between the Hawaiian Islands suspended operations indefinitely Tuesday after two days of emotional protests and legal setbacks.
Hawaii Superferry Inc. halted service after the Coast Guard advised that it could not assure safe passage of the 350-foot ferry in and out of Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai, where a flotilla of protesters blocked it from docking late Monday.
A court order sought by environmentalists had already halted service to Maui, with a hearing set for Wednesday.
Gov. Linda Lingle, a longtime ferry supporter, also requested Tuesday that the service be suspended because of public safety concerns.
Opponents say the ferry endangers whales, threatens to spread invasive species and will worsen traffic and pollution. But Superferry officials say the ship's water jet propulsion system means there are no exposed propellers to strike aquatic animals.
John Garibaldi, Superferry's president and chief executive, said operations will not resume until safety is assured. The company, which invested $300 million to launch the service, could lose millions while its vessel is grounded.
"The cost to us really isn't very important," he said. "It's really making sure we can take care of our passengers."
Lingle said she was concerned by protests Monday night on Kauai that led to 11 arrests after about 65 people on surfboards, canoes and kayaks formed a human blockade and forced the $95 million ferry to turn back to Honolulu.
The ferry, named Alakai, was stalled outside Nawiliwili Harbor late Monday for nearly three hours as Coast Guard vessels, including an 85-foot cutter, failed to clear the way for the ship.
The ferry returned to Honolulu about midnight, and some passengers, who had paid a discounted $5 fare for the voyage, were put in hotels and given vouchers for future travel.
The company also paid for flights, hotel rooms and car rentals for passengers who sailed and were stranded on Kauai on Sunday.
For decades, the only way to travel among the islands - where an estimated 1.3 million people live and tens of thousands of tourists arrive each day - was by the local airlines.
Austal USA, which built the ferry in Mobile, Ala., is building a second, scheduled to serve the Big Island starting in 2009.

This kind of environmentalist stunt angers me.
