Questionable Wikipedia Coverage
August 19, 2007 - 11:35 ET by BeresfordNote another article in NYT today about edits to Wikipedia entries.
http://www.nytimes.c...
After criticizing at length business and government agencies from which some edits emanated, in the 26th paragraph of the article, the author admits that some edits also came from the New York Times. She calls these edits "questionable." And what falls into the category of "questionable" to the NYT? To quote the article:
A change to the page on President Bush, for instance, repeated the word "jerk" 12 times. And in the entry for Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, the word "pianist" was changed to "penis."
I wonder what it would take for a NYT-staffer submitted edit to be considered beyond "questionable" to perhaps "wrong"?
-
August 19, 2007 - 12:40 ET by dahliatraversFurther, does the NYTimes understand that by doing this (or not being sufficiently careful about whom they allow to carry out these edits), they are the ones who look like jerks and ... pianists?

August 19, 2007 - 12:31 ET by Del DolemonteJamaica isn't out of the woods yet-the greatest damage in a hurricane is typically in the "northeast quadrant"-if Dean passes just to the south of the island, the heaviest damage would be just above and to the right of its path, which is...right over the south coast of Jamaica.
Since many of the "houses" down there are nothing more than fragile shacks, some clinging to steep hillsides at crazy angles, there's still going to be substantial damage.
Alot of damage
August 19, 2007 - 12:50 ET by NortonPeteI agree, but various news reports have Dean "bearing down" on Jamaica with 150mph winds expected to go to CAT5.
Flooding causes the most deaths and you are right, because a hurricane spins counter-clockwise the winds on the Northeast are higher for a storm traveling West.
I'm hoping the eye stays 50 nm offshore and doesn't chew up the island like a weed wacker from hell.
It might go to CAT 5 but that would occur after it passes Jamaica and hits warmer waters.

CNN's new Civil War scenario
August 19, 2007 - 13:30 ET by ThisnThatJust turned on CNN (1:10pm) -- they had some bonehead General on as an expert (didn't catch his name) who was asked about progress. He said "The Americans are now teaming up with the Sunis, and this will be the basis of the civil war in Iraq". In other words, the success that we've had with the locals is not progress -- instead, we have made a major blunder by agreeing to work with the Sunis against Al Queda.
BTW, this was not challenged. The General, after all, is CNN's expert on all military strategery.
Following this, Michael Ware was asked about the possibility that there is a civil war going on. His response "There is no one that can question that we're in the middle of a major civil war right now". His response did not include one mention of two concepts: "terrorists" and "Al Queda". In other words, the fact that the Sunis have turned against Al Queda does not present any other option; and the fact that Iran is stirring up trouble with selected Shites also shouldn't be considered. Noooooo, the only answer is that we, the United States, are in the middle of a disasterous civil war.
BTW, this also wasn't challenged.
Want to get news from the most trusted news source in the world? Don't tune into CNN.
What bothers me is that there are a lot of Americans that actually believe this drivil, primarily because it is presented by a so-called trustworthy news source, and because these statements/concepts are not challenged in any way whatsoever.

August 19, 2007 - 13:38 ET by dahliatravers... um, did we know Al Gore had body guards while he was doing the journalist thing in Vietnam?
[This is from a 1998 Washington Weekly article.]
Meanwhile, the rumors about Gore's military service in Vietnam continued to accumulate. The Los Angeles Times recently reported that Gore went to Nam accompanied by a "handle with care" order that prompted the Army to provide bodyguards in order to keep young Al out of harm's way. (This partly confirms the rumor I reported here last week, although the bodyguards were paid for by the taxpayers, not by Gore's father as the original version had stated). According to L.A. Times correspondent Richard Serrano, "Several of his (Vietnam) colleagues remember they were assigned to make sure this son of a prominent politician was never injured in the war."
The Times story that appeared on October 15 reported that, "H. Alan Leo said soldiers were ordered to serve as Gore's bodyguards, to keep him out of harms way. 'It blew me away,' Leo said. 'I was to make sure he didn't get into a situation he could not get out of. ...

Swift Boat
August 19, 2007 - 14:13 ET by ThisnThatOne of the Lib arguments against the Swift Boat veterans is that John Kerry was a true warrior, and that the 3 purple hearts proved this. And, when Kerry went to Vietnam, there was no political consideration involved -- i.e., he wasn't doing this so that he could point to his service as a future politician.
This bodyguard activity kinda blows the Lib argument out of the water, doesn't it? And the libs never want to explain how a person could recieve 3 purple hearts without spending a single day in the hospital.
