On today’s edition of Morning Joe, the pop culture guest du jour was Carole King, prolific and famous songwriter for Hollywood’s golden music days. Now the NewsBusters readers of greater life experience may initially have a “Don’t Bring Me Down” reaction – until one gets to this quote:
I want them to learn that they’re there, and that they [wilderness in the United States] need to be protected in the future, because we have about 97 percent of our American land is developed. And the number, that three percent keeps dwindling, dwindling. We’ve got to keep our national parks in our minds as we go to protect new wilderness – which, new wilderness is really preserving the status quo. It’s a new designation, same old God-given land.First of all, one highly doubts that conservatives would argue that wilderness must needs be preserved. There are many conservatives who enjoy a "pleasant valley (on) Sunday." It’s not as if crazed right-wingers want to pave over Yellowstone for another Wal-Mart. That said, there’s something very, very off about King’s numbers.Story Continues Below Ad ↓
The 97% statistic raised a rather large flag in my mind, so I went to the U.S. National Park Service website to find out how much land is contained in that system. As it turns out, the National Park System contains 3.6% of the United States’ land. Which, of course, means that in King’s estimation, all those American lands not under the direct supervision of the National Park System is developed, even though the figure leaves out state, regional, and local parks, not to mention farms, ranches, grazing pastures, and private game or wildlife reserves. That's quite a loco notion.
So while in most cases, such a statistical contortion would bring both wrath and scorn from one’s detractors (something along the lines of “go away little girl," perhaps?), this just serves as a reminder of the thoughtless liberalism in Hollywood. King is simply another celebrity with a liberal cause, a cautionary tale in Hollywood indoctrination gone wild.

Most conservatives care about the environment as well...it's not the sole realm of the Liberals.
I'm not of the mindset that government and chambers of commerce make the best decisions in the area of land development, and we have managed to screw some things up pretty badly.
But, sometime in the future when we're long gone, Nature will reclaim it all over time. In the meantime, we can screw it up for ourselves and take a few other species down with us.

Carole King is a promoter
September 22, 2009 - 21:15 ET by jdhawkCarole King is a promoter of the Northern Rockies Ecosystem Portection Act (H.R. 980 - 111th Congress) that will completly block all development whatsoever in the northern rocky states. This is just one of many attempts to block the use of natural gas and oil among the many other natural resources that are in abundance in these states. Should this legislation pass, the area would be the "look don't touch" area of the U.S.
Meanwhile, King couldn't be more wrong on here figures of what is and isn't owne and by whom in the United States. The United States government has direct ownership of almost 650 million acres of land (2.63 million square kilometers) – nearly 30% of its total territory. These federal lands are used as military bases or testing grounds, nature parks and reserves and indian reservations, or are leased to the private sector for commercial exploitation (e.g. forestry, mining, agriculture). They are managed by different administrations, such as the Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the US Department of Defense, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the US Bureau of Reclamation or the Tennessee Valley Authority.
This map details the percentage of state territory owned by the federal government. The top 10 list of states with the highest percentage of federally owned land looks like this:
Notable is that all these states are in the West (except Alaska, which strictly speaking is also a western state, albeit northwestern). Also notable is the contrast between the highest and the lowest percentages of federal land ownership. The US government owns a whopping 84.5% of Nevada, but only a puny 0.4% of Rhode Island and Connecticut. The lowest-percentage states are mainly in the East, but some are also in the Midwest and in the South:
Even the 10th place is still below the two percent mark. One territory is not specified on the map: Washington D.C. It could be argued that this is the only main administrative division of US territory to be fully owned by the federal government. It could, but that would be wrong – and upsetting to those private citizens who own part of the nation’s capital in the form of their real estate. It would be more correct to state that the District of Columbia by default falls under the direct tutelage of the Federal Government.
Here is the link to the map, as referenced in the narrative above: http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2008/06/17/291-federal-lands-in-the-us/

Carole, it's time for you to pay a visit to a good clergy.
"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." Genesis 8:22
It's ok with God for us to use anything that has a seed. As long as we are good stewards and replant the seed, God allows us to harvest. We can cut trees down and use them as long as we take the seeds and replant them for new trees. God doesn't believe in "plant and hoard" God believes in seedtime and harvest.

September 22, 2009 - 23:02 ET by BlueCat57Of the earth's landmass about 97% is empty. People occupy about 3%. OK, I made that up just like Carole did. But I'm pretty close based on the following:
In the US about 10 is developed. Of course that developed land includes a lot of backyards and parks.
The entire population of the earth can stand on Manhattan island with a little room left over.
Neal Boortz calculated that if you put 2 80-story condos per acre on two south Georgia counties you could house the entire population of the earth. Parking would be on adjacent counties in Florida.
Another Web site provide a number that 10% of the earth considered habitable could sustain a population of 9 billion.
Conclusion: Carole King's head contains slightly more unused space than the earth.

September 23, 2009 - 08:32 ET by dscottRepeat after me folks: A liberal assertion is only a falsehood waiting to be exposed.
This is in the same line as the "Story of Stuff" nonsense video being shown in the schools, factless false assertions to support the hidden agenda. The liberal motto: The facts are only relevant if they support the agenda. And we wonder how it is public schools have ever increasing drop out rates despite spending ever more money per pupil? There are two types of liberals, those who make up the lies and those who unquestioningly believe the lies.
This only goes to show that the art of teaching is not the regurgitation of material presented but just the opposite, the exercise of critical thinking testing the veracity of the material presented. If you want learning in the public schools, teach critical thinking skills to have kids find out for themselves if what is being presented is accurate or not. Name me a teenager that doesn't delight in proving an adult wrong!!!
It seems to me that the whole of Obama's time in office is a teachable moment (more like a continuum) about liberal myths being foisted upon the public and then exposed for the falsehoods they are.

Re Falsehoods
September 23, 2009 - 10:20 ET by slickwillie2001Good principle. There's a long, long list of liberal fake 'data' going back decades, but like Dick Morris's predictions they are quickly forgotten when they are proven wrong. Look at DDT, Nuclear Winter, the % of people that are homosexual, the coming ice age, the coming global warming, Belleisles's BS on gun ownership, fake data on hunger in America, fake data on homeless in America, fake data on Mexican guns/crime, fake data on medical bankruptcies, fake data on how many uninsured's there are, etc. etc.
My default position on any data that liberals come up with to support their liberal programs is that the study is fake, the data is bogus, the analysis is biased.

September 23, 2009 - 15:39 ET by BlueCat57Manhattan is the most densely populated county in the US with 71,201 people per sq. mile.
