StarTribune: 'Voters Weathering Economic Downturn Sticking With Obama — Because They Like Him'

By Mike Bates | September 25, 2011 | 18:51

A  A
Mike Bates's picture

Forget those polls.  In the mainstream media, there's always good news for President Barack Obama.  So it is on the Minneapolis StarTribune's Web site.  An Associated Press article appears under the headline "Voters weathering economic downturn sticking with Obama — because they like him" and includes this heartening news:

People who have lost their jobs or homes during Obama's presidency nonetheless say they want him to succeed and, what's more, they're working to help re-elect him because of the affinity they feel for him.

And how did the AP arrive at this conclusion in its 31-paragraph story?  They talked to people, that's how.  Specifically, the article includes quotes from two, count'em, two women who have lost their jobs, one woman who has lost her house, and one woman who has a law degree but "cobbles together work as a caterer, cake decorator and office manager."  The AP supplemented its exhaustive research by talking to a few Democratic operatives, to assure an objective and complete analysis no doubt.

Let's see. There are currently 14 million unemployed Americans, an increase of 2.4 million since Obama took office.  Last year, foreclosure filings were reported on a record 2.9 million properties.  Yet the Associated Press interviews four people and reports they and others hit by the Obama Depression are "working to help re-elect him."  Guess they just couldn't find anyone who isn't.

Yes, indeed.  There's always good news for Obama.  The mainstream media would have it no other way.

Yeah, and I just read a quote from Boy BlahBlah - the GOP will 'cripple' America!!! Hey, Barry - you've broken our legs, our arms, our ribs, and our bank accounts, as well as added multiple layers of rules, regulations, laws, edicts, and fatwahs.....we've have your 'boot on our throats'..............and you've been 'kicking our asses'...............and we've been 'eating our peas'................I'm not sure what the GOP - or Bugs Bunny, for that matter - could do to make anything worse!!!

Hey killa: You forgot to mention the czars! We need more of 'em for sure. By the way, who pays for the czars? I'm sure it's in my well worn copy of the communist manifesto if I could just find the thing.

People love him for sure but are slowly coming around to the fact that Obama would have to repudiate everything he's done right down to his core beliefs in order to get this country going again and "that dog don't hunt".

They dont even pretend to have an ounce of objectivity.
They also have an almost pathological, negative obsession with MIchelle Bachmann.
That may be in part because she refuses to even try to get their endorsement, ie to interview with them, which
apparently drives them bug-nutty.

A wise decision

Submitted by NotFondOfLibs on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 8:54pm.

I think it is a wise decision by Michele Bachmann to refuse to talk to the Minneapolis Tribune because they probably are only interested in "gotcha" journalism with her. Most of these major newspapers and news organizations around the country like the NY Times and the AP would eat food off the ground if they thought it would help Obama's re-election chances.

Yes, "Gotcha" journalism to the extreme.......

Submitted by merly1 on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 10:08pm.

The Strib wrote a vicious editorial after Bachmann blooped on the HPV-retardation issue, which normally
would be fair except for the fact Obama had a worse vaccine blooper in the 2008 campaign.
The WaPo had deliciously and hilariously skewered Obama/McCain in their Fact-Check section story "Dr McCain and Dr Obama." It pinnochio-ed Obama for throwing all of vaccine science under the proverbial bus in pandering to the autism crowd in 2008. Obama's handlers even later blamed an audience member, ala Bachmann, for part of Obama's misstatement, but of course no Dem activists offered bounties to find that audience member.
Oddly, ;o) the Strib forgot to mention Obama in attacking Bachmann's recent HPV statement. Real journalism is dying a slow and painful death.

Determining a trend at the Minneapolis Tribune

Submitted by NotFondOfLibs on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 8:48pm.

I'dlike the Minneapolis Tribune to explain how their interviews with 2 out of work Americans who like Obama can determine a trend. That is absurd. It has no more applicability than a straw poll. Since this cake was baked by the Associated Press, we should be highly suspicious of its objectivity and credibilility. I have about as much respect for the Associated Press as a German who says Adolph Hitler was misunderstood.

Good AG working on who is responsible

Submitted by coin of the realm on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 9:48pm.

for the economic problems we have and not just blindly blaming whomever he dislikes so that he can get to the root causes and correct the things that need correcting to avoid repeating this type of fiasco. notice he is not on a political witch hunt and is undeterred by Obama, bankers and other AG's efforts to get him to just shut-up and settle. How would that do any good in preventing a repeat of this? How can we possibly know how to begin to repair--IE more jobs and growth--unless we first understand what caused the major economic meltdown? How can we blame Obama for something not of his making? How can we blame Bush for something he may or may not have been able to prev ent un less we know what needed preventing? This is not about ideology or taxes or stimulus, it is about the very nature of the inner workings of the financial world, its ties to regulators, regulations or lack thereof and what constitutes criminal behavior. Further, it is also about the nature of capitalism as we practice it. Do we as Americans owe a duty to businesses to rescue them if they fail or do businesses owe society a responsibility to act in ways that include more than executive compensation and shareholder returns? How about the larger group of stakeholders? How about the government? how about the tax payers and working people of this country?

"The people who caused this crash have to be held accountable and I don't detect any diminution in the desire of the people of New York for that basic kind of justice to be done," he said. "Part of this [investigation] is to air this out and expose it so we can make sure it never happens again."
"To impose accountability seems to be an overarching theme for him, by pursuing this in a way the SEC hasn't," Adams went on. "A crisis happened and there were people responsible.

"One of the things that concerns me right now is this effort to rewrite history, to move us away from the fact that it was bad deregulatory moves and greedy, risky conduct that caused this to happen and that it wasn't the fault of the teachers and cops and firefighters who now seem to be the targets of this effort to cut spending. The markets didn't crash because we were paying too much to teachers."

The sense of public confidence has been eroded so badly," he says. "People still haven't gotten over the crash and the bailout … and people are not going to be satisfied until they have a sense that those responsible have been held accountable. This was a man-made catastrophe."

In pursuing his own investigation, Schneiderman has irritated the administration and the bankers, but he hasn't buckled. He says that to believe there is any other possible way to resolve things is misguided.

"He's taking on the administration, which wants to put everything behind us without doing any work," said Tom Adams. "The administration wants to impose best practices going forward and put everything else behind. What do you expect? The Obama chief of staff is from Chase Bank."

Despite the bias and shoddy "reporting" by this newspaper, I am amazed that there really are a lot of people who are struggling financially in this economy who still think Obama is a good president who's doing "the best he can". I know a few of them. These are the die hard liberals who have total faith in big government and truly believe that conservatives are only out to help "the rich". I tell them that, while these days, I am as far from being rich as one can be, I'm a conservative - and they just can't see how that can be possible. My conversations with them show me that the political divide in this country is as wide as the Pacific Ocean and as deep as the Mariana Trench.

Not so simple

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 9:13am.

If it's so great, why do people come to America from Canada to get treatment?

Seriously though, universal health care on its own is a bad idea.  Ronald Reagan explains why.  However, the political idealogy you mention made a bad thing into a monstrous farce that doesn't even deserve the name "health care" which is supposed to be a good thing, a positive thing.

I mean, come on, look at the things that keep popping up that people apparently "didn't know about" but had to pass this thing in order to find out what's in it?(Thanks, Pelousy!)  My biggest gripe is the government having access to my bank account and I don't want that AT ALL.  If that gets to be continued to be allowed, then where else does the line get drawn if at all?

And sure, you might say "good luck" but you gotta remember, this thing got rammed down our throats regardless of what the populace said, which was "don't do it" (according to the majority of the various polls out there at the time).  Congress at the time (before 2010) disregarded the will of the people.  So it wasn't just "us folks" that screwed this "simple thing" up.

You might try thinking a little more about the details before blaming the Americans solely for this thing.  I blame the Americans for voting Soetoro in, but when they made their buyer's remorse clear, it was ignored by those same people voted in.

By simple do you mean healthcare - It seems the entire world is having trouble with this issue to the degree that benefits that include healthcare are causing riots and government shut downs but obviously you feel that these people are doing it right and the US is just a screwing up everything by offering everyone healthcare - including those who come here for healthcare because it is still the best in the world for overall care and current technology.

US doctors have a fit when their x-ray machine is 5 years old - the one I used in France was only had two-directional movement - probably about 15 years old at the time.

Don't get me wrong - the condition of the medical system in Canada and some European countries are still good but they have their limitations and trade offs have been made. Some times these trade-offs are good (better universal care) some times - not so good (lack of innovation and mobility).

There has never and will never be enough "healthcare" available to satify the ordinary needs of the people. Any real emergency just brings a choice on who gets care. Unfortunatley government control of medicine only means that those with connections to power will receive adequate care. The political class was just looking for a big enough promise(lie) to gain absolute power over the vote.

Just like any economic factor there will be those who 'slip through the cracks'. Social programs are theoretically designed to catch those that slip through but they are economic factors as well and a certain number will continue to slip through.

Liberals, politicians and overly sympathetic people in general need to come to grips with the idea that you cannot save everyone because it is not healthy for society as a whole. Also, stating that we can't save everyone is not a sign of callousness but an observation of natural limitations. It amazes me that so many people that are enthralled with the theories of Darwinism cannot accept this simple fact.

Economics also indicate that for each percentage point of people you try to save using social safety nets the cost is going to increase exponentially. (Using 5% because it is a common number in economics when I studied) If 5% of the population fail under normal economic conditions the cost to society to save 2% of those people could be expressed 2x^2 - where x=the cost of saving 1% of those who fail (probably expressed in hundreds of billions). The difference in saving 2% and 4% could be the difference between Canada and Greece.

. . Socialist = Modern Liberal = Parasitoid

The Star- Tribune must be run

The Star- Tribune must be run by either Obama's paid footsoldiers or they are all lunatics.

I vote both.

My personal opinion (through the lens of my psychiatric practice) is that most of the rabid Obama supporters are of the lunatic fringe variety with particular emphasis on the kind who have turned the incompetent teleprompted windbag into a deity.
