CNN's Costello: 'Jobless Claims Plummeted Last Week': A Whopping 1.5%
It was good economic news on CNN's Newsroom this morning. After a brief mention of radiation in Japan, anchor Carol Costello reported:
Brand new numbers out of the Labor Department this morning. It turns out jobless claims plummeted last week. Down 6,000 to 388,000.
I'm not certain what dictionary CNN news readers use, but "plummet" wouldn't seem to be the right verb. Merriam-Webster's online reference defines plummet as "to fall perpendicularly" or "to drop sharply and abruptly." A 1.5 percent reduction in jobless claims quite clearly doesn't meet those definitions.
Moreover, the 6,000 drop figure is "seasonally adjusted" with a Labor Department statistical technique designed to accommodate fluctuations in the job market. DOL's Employment and Training report included the raw data:
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 354,301 in the week ending March 26, a decrease of 156 from the previous week.
156 fewer jobless claims. Hundreds of billions spent by President Obama and his liberal accomplices on shovel-ready jobs and that's what results.
Yet at CNN, jobless claims "plummeted." Don't they ever tire of trying to prop up Obama's failed administration?

It is hard to get "just the facts" without some opinion in the way of adverbs and adjectives. Perhaps in that persons mind 1 + % drop is a plummet. Imagine the description if it would have been a 20% drop! lol
it slightly missed estimates too

consensus was 383k. the trend is good as is getting it under 400k, but plummet was a poor choice of words. That # cold go down a lot more if government shrank and got out of the way. Lower the corporate tax rate, which serves as a tariff on our own goods, and remove corporate welfare for politically favored industries

I am sure a lot of Dems work for Fox as shown by your headline. Funny how they are characterized as completely biased. Other than Beck & Hannity, Fox is white washing a bunch of issues too. Just not as bad as the MSM. MSM wants no mention of the other side of the coin because they truly are a bunch of Marxist in large measure.
I am guess Saudi Arabia is trying to get Beck fired with all their heart.

A 1.5% decrease is a "plummet" while a 23% increase in gasoline prices in the last 3 months doesn't get a mention?

That the residents of the old Soviet Union got better news reporting than we in the "free west" are getting today.
Without the internet it would almost be impossible for citizens to find out about some of the important issues and stories of today.

Next time the unemployment claim numbers go up by say, 400,000, Costello is going to call it a "slight increase," right before she tells us how "unexpected" it was.

Less People working = less people laid off
Submitted by Kimnota on Thu, 03/31/2011 - 2:28pm.
Eventually the pool of people working is so small, the number of people laid off goes down. There's only so many jobs to eliminate. Once they're all eliminated the new jobless claims will be zero.

initial claims
Submitted by Blorg on Thu, 03/31/2011 - 2:54pm.
Keep in mind that these are "initial claims".
That is, claims by people who were previously employed. These get added to the number of people already collecting unemployment and those who have exceeded their limit for unemployment benefits.
Initial claims could be dropping because there are so many people out of work that there are not that many still employed who can lose their jobs.
