Name That Party: Illinois Concealed Carry Edition
Fox News Chicago reports this morning:
Tim McCarthy, a former Secret Service agent who took a bullet intended for President Ronald Reagan, will observe the 30th anniversary of the attempted assassination on Wednesday by going to Springfield to oppose legislation that would repeal Illinois's ban on concealed carrying of firearms.
McCarthy said he's alarmed that an Illinois House Committee approved a concealed carry proposal. The full House could vote soon.
As happens so often, the fact McCarthy, now the police chief of Chicago suburb Orland Park, is a Democrat isn't reported. In 1998, he sought his party's endorsement for Illinois Secretary of State.
We admire Tim McCarthy for doing his job bravely and possibly saving President Reagan's life. But that doesn't give his views on concealed carry laws any special credibility
Interestingly, the alarmed Chief McCarthy notes (at about 1:27 of the video): "I know the gang members will still get their guns and that criminals will still get their guns."
Given that obvious truth, why does he not want to give law-abiding citizens an even chance? Oh, that's right. He's a Democrat, a fact Fox News Chicago didn't find relevant.

Government isn't empowered to
Submitted by Ashrak on Wed, 03/30/2011 - 1:21pm.
Government isn't empowered to "give" a chance here. Neither is anyone operating that entity.
Illinois has long banned ALL carry. Today, we remain stand alone as the only state that 100% criminalizes the exercise of the right to bear arms.
Shockingly, I oppose legislation in play too.
This slew of "carry legislation" is a debacle of epic proportion and makes matters worse, not better.
This idea that we must beg for government issued permission slips, pay for them and further qualify for them both in classrooms and in demonstrations of exercise that must pass state's permission, how about the idea to give up fingerprints and even full access to medical records? It's all LUDICROUS when the context is the exercise of INALIENABLE RIGHTS.
Ready to beg for permission slips to pray or write or speak? How about to carry a pencil and paper or a bible? Ready to be "trained" in these activities so you pass the class and can only then exercise your rights? Ready for a permission slip, fee based of course, in order to speak your political piece? And how about to go vote?
A travesty is taking place in Illinois, well, multiple travesties actually.
CHLs

Sorry, Ashrak, gotta disagree with you there.
While I 100% agree with you that IL is wrong to pretty much ban guns from the state, I have NO problem with CHLs. TX has them, as gun-friendly as this state is.
Now, you are doubtless going to shriek and scream that I am anti-2nd Amendment. Actually, I think this can and does strengthen the 2nd Amendment and has the ability to shut the gun-control idiots up. How? Because by having the license, you indicate that you ARE in fact law-abiding, and that 99% of the time, law enforcement authorities have nothing to worry about when you are around.
According to the state of TX, I am mentally competent to carry a concealed handgun, I'm not a felon, nor have I committed any more than a Class C misdemeanor, and that I have demonstrated my proficiency in using one. So, to the anti-gun zealots: what's the problem?
CHLs take away arguments from anti-gun types.
Not to mention I have no problem with my state's gun laws. Sure, I'd like to see open carry in the state by CHL holders become legal, but in the meantime, it doesn't bother me that guns aren't allowed in bars or that convicted felons can't even be seen near them. (Hey, felons don't have the right to vote either in many cases.)
To me, getting a CHL is less seeking a permission slip (CHL or not, I can still carry concealed in my vehicle and can open fire on a trespasser via the "castle doctrine") than you might think it is.

Are about as effective as prohibition on alcohol was, or criminalization of marijuana is.
Laws about weapons are just like locks on a door, they only stop law-abiding citizens.

Take it easy there brother -
Did you expect no response for calling me a loser? And now you call me a jerk and you act as if you are the one that has been slighted.
I have to ask; where in what I wrote did you glean I was advocating anything, let alone overrunning America with "burnouts and potheads"?
I don't know why your type wrap yourselves up in other people's personal business instead of just living your own life, with your own family and your own like-minded friends. According to the constitution; what I, or anyone else in America does with their life is no-one's business as long as they aren't hurting someone. Not the government's and not YOURS, and as long as it isn't hurting anyone else -- WHO CARES? Don't we all have enough going on without bothering our neighbors?
AND, Just so you know: When I referenced prohibition against alcohol and the criminalization of marijuana I was not referring to the use of said products, but using the failed laws as a metaphor for the fact that criminals tend to not follow the laws and people do what they want to do. I personally thought it was a wry simile to the second half of the comment and a negative social comment regarding legislation that tries to regulate human behavior and thoughts and ultimately fails.
So, next time you insult someone for some pet-peeve of yours, don't read more into the comment than is there. This unpleasantness could have been avoided by, well, I don't know, possibly instead of calling me a loser, you might have attempted a query as to what I intended as you clearly had a hard time understanding what I wrote.
Summary: Your social commentary carries little weight when it's framed in the form of an insult.
the proverbial ball is in your court, scooter.

and proscribe the use of all car, residential and business establishment door locks since they are wholly ineffectual in deterring potential vandals, burglars and other assorted miscreants? That appears to be the logical extension of your argument. If so, I would like to see some statistical backup for it.

That would be a rather long extension, wouldn't it?
Say, if I did think that way, where would I start looking for statistical data based on a perfect world?
Once again:
Locks are just like laws: they only stop/deter honest people.
Fortunately for us, MOST people are honest.

Scenario: A thief is in the parking lot of an office building. He must act quickly inasmuch as workers will soon be exiting the building and heading for their vehicles. He walks between two cars of similar make and model, each with a briefcase sitting inside in plain view. One vehicle is locked, the other one is not.
Are you seriously suggesting the thief would be just as likely to break into the locked vehicle by smashing a window as he would be to simply open the unlocked door of the second car and grab the briefcase? Locks don't always--but they most certainly can and do--act as a deterrent to dishonest people.
Jer
Ok.

Well, this got pointless pretty quick.
You got me, so no, in the highly unlikely situation you bring up, locks are the best thing since dishonesty. :)
It's funny you bring up this scenario. While I was stationed in Spain (Rota) in the middle 80's the car with the locked doors WAS the more likely of the two to be targeted. It was pretty simple, the bulk of the thieves figured if you locked it, there must be something good in it.

like most libs, acknowledges that people like John Hinckley can get guns anyway and will carry them around without even thinking about a permit. He just wants to make sure that law abiding, tax paying citizens don't have the choice to protect themselves with a handgun, if they want to.
McCarthy is perfectly ok with your 19 year old daughter, getting off an evening shift and walking through a dimly lit parking lot to get to her car, even if it means occasionally being raped and possibly abducted, tortured and killed, then dumped into a drainage ditch miles from her home. He doesn't want society placed in danger by her carrying a handgun.
I've got news for you libs. There are already people carrying firearms concealed on their person, in public. They are criminals and don't give a damn about any law. They sit in restaurants next to you and are in the movie theater behind you. You pass them on the street and usually you don't get harmed by them. Why are you so afraid of people that try to obey the law all the time?
Don't forget...

Also remember that in the Leftist world, as you are burying your 19 year old daughter after being raped, tortured and murdered, you can cheerfully say at her funeral, "She was morally superior for not being able to defend herself!!!"
Me, I'd rather her have the means to blow the SOB away.

concealed carry of handguns, how is it that there are people committing crimes with concealed handguns in that state? IT'S AGAINST THE LAW!!! What the he!l is wrong with those Illini?? I know here in Virginia, we have, for example, laws about how fast you can drive, and NOBODY ever exceeds those limits. Now excuse me while I chase away a herd of unicorns loitering in my backyard.

Fox News Chicago has moved sharply to the left with the arrival of Bob Sirrot from PBS station WTTW. They have replaced everyone except Robin Robinson who is black and Bruce Wolf who is Jewish. Its practically the same as watching CBS these days. They even replaced their very popular weather person, Amy Freeze [Real name!] with a buddy of the current "new" manager. Supposedly he's going to increase the viewership. Well, they've lost my wife and me!
