CNN's Borger: Obama 'Aligned with So-Called Liberal Leaders in the Democratic Congress'

Today on The Situation Room, CNN senior political analyst Gloria Borger discussed President Obama's rapidly declining approval ratings.  A question was posed by host Suzanne Malveaux:

MALVEAUX: What does it mean, Gloria, for the president to be losing out on these Independents?

GLORIA BORGER, CNN SR. POLITICAL ANALYST: I think it's a real possible for him. Remember that President Obama won the election with 52 percent of Independent voters. That number is down considerably to 43 percent, and Independents are the margin of difference here for him.

Now, the key to keeping those people is, right now, they are worried about the deficit. They see the president as a big spender. They see him aligned with so-called liberal leaders in the Democratic Congress. So, what he's got to do when -- after Labor Day is kind of show them that he is the kind of so-called post-partisan president that many of them thought they were electing.

The good news for President Obama in this is that they are not realigning themselves with the Republicans yet, because the Republican Party still has very high disapproval ratings.

Now, Jessica, you've been watching something as well, which it looks like to be a generational gap in these numbers.

Borger's choice of words was revealing.  By using "so-called," she introduced an element of doubt as to whether Congressional Democratic leaders are, in fact, liberal.  Synonyms listed at thesaurus.com include pretended, dubious, and questionable.

I don't see there's any question as to if the Democratic leadership in Congress is liberal.  These are the folks who, spurred on by Obama, have given us unprecedented spending and deficits, expanded federal meddling in the private sector, and are now attempting to take over the one-sixth of the economy represented by health care.  It's no coincidence that last July's deficit was bigger than that for all of 2007.  Americans for Tax Reform calculated that this year's Cost of Government Day, the day on which the average American has earned enough gross income to pay off his or her share of the spending and regulatory burdens imposed by government at all levels, fell on August 12, a full 26 days later than just last year.

I can only shudder in imagining what damage would be wrought if Obama aligned himself with real liberal leaders in the Democratic Congress rather than Borger's "so-called" ones.

"so-called liberal leaders

"so-called liberal leaders in the Democratic Congress."

Maybe the "so-called" refers to the term "leaders". I mean, if the whole health care debate is getting so out of hand, where's the leadership?

→ Losing out on Independents

That's such an awkward statement, it's hard to believe she made it.

The identity of the term "independent" is somewhat self explanatory, isn't it?

Malveaux must be thinking of another definition.  Maybe she's confusing random variables with independent variables.

"So-called liberal leaders..."

"They see him aligned with so-called liberal leaders in the Democratic Congress."

What? "So-called" liberal leaders? So, it's just my imagination that Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid, Dick Durbin and Co., are (or were, in Kennedy's case) all liberals...Oh, okay...Borger's right...they're really moderates. Geez...

And just for the record, has Borger forgotten that while in the Senate (that is, when he showed up for work) Obama had one of the most liberal voting records? What does she catagorize Obama as? A moderate? He's a far-leftist, and always has been. And as far as independents go, I think that there's a very good chance that that ship has sailed...They're gone.

For a "senior poilitical analyst", Ms. Borger's "analysis" is pretty stupid.

Unbelievable.

It seems that "liberal" is

It seems that "liberal" is still a dirty word to the left.

of other people's money."

—Margaret Thatcher

QM...Exactly! And that begs the question...

WHY??

Why is liberal such a dirty word? Because the Left knows that this is a center-right country, and we don't buy the liberal dogma, and don't want our country run according to the liberal playbook. It's that simple.

I love that song. I listen

I love that song. I listen to "Quinn and Rose" in the a.m. That's where I first heard it. They have all sorts of song snippets that they use to accompany discussion topics. For instance, they use the national anthem of the former USSR prior to a discussion of Obama's policies. Good stuff.

QM...Great! I hadn't heard of...

"Quinn and Rose" till now...What a hoot that video is! And I LOVE that they play the former Soviet anthem before talking about "O's" policies...How perfect...Good stuff is right! Thanks again!

RD...Interesting is right, and...

I'm not so sure that she's correct about that, either. I saw a poll last week that had independents favoring Repub candidates for next year's elections. We'll see...

mb...Great point, and...

there's one big aspect that she didn't mention. While the Repubs numbers may not be stratospheric, yet, they are going up, while the Dems, pretty much across the board, are going down.

Just what the heck is the

Just what the heck is the "independent" voter?  In my state, we can't register into any party, so we're all "independent" if that's how they look at it.  If someone calls me and asks, they're going to hear "I'm an independent voter" and there I am, in the independent statistics.  I wish people would tell pollsters to go take a long walk off a short pier.

Who gets polled anyway?  Polls all over the place, but I've never gotten polled nor do I know anyone who has.

well of course 1) he is a

well of course 1) he is a LIBERAL! 2) spending too much money-didn't he accuse Bush/republicans of uncontrollable spending? but yet engages in the very same thing he spoke out agaisnt.   and 3he is LIBERAL JAJT

Obama won the election

Obama won the election with 52 percent of Independent voters.

Coincidentally that is exactly the same as the popular vote.

I suspect in real life the 43% from independents is also matched by 43% of likely voters as well.

The great thing for Republicans 2010 is this: Democrats seem to think this doesn't matter 7 months in.

Borger's analysis is just great!

Borger's analysis is just great! After Labor Day, the President must show "them" that he isn't what he is. It boggles the mind.
