CNN'S Yellin Cites 'Nonpartisan' Group Critical of Palin

A favorite tactic of the mainstream media is to cite supposedly nonpartisan organizations to advance the point they're trying to make. An example of that was shown on CNN's American Morning today. Anchor John Roberts set up the segment:

ROBERTS: Coming up now at 18 minutes after the hour. Sarah Palin returns to Alaska today. But her homecoming bittersweet as her eldest son, Track, deploys for Iraq tomorrow. And since Palin was nominated for vice president, her career and her personal life have been under the microscope.

CNN's Jessica Yellin joins us live this morning from Anchorage, Alaska.

Yellin, the network's Capitol Hill correspondent, spoke of how Palin juggles family responsibilities with her career. She wrapped up the piece:

YELLIN: Palin supporters insist her experience as a working mother means she'll represent American women. But some women's groups are critical. The Non-Partisan National Partnership for Women and Families gives Alaska a D minus when it comes to its parental leave policy. For example, there's no guarantee a paid leave for new parents.

DR. VICKI LOVELL, INSTITUTE FOR WOMEN'S POLICY RESEARCH: I think there's a contradiction there between Governor Palin's professed values about supporting families and then what we actually see in the state of Alaska where there aren't adequate supports for families who are welcoming new infants.

YELLIN: Now, John, Palin, herself, never took much maternity leave. And as for the state law, her defenders say, well, she's had other priorities in office, like championing a natural gas pipeline and seeing to it that Alaskans get money back from a tax on oil companies.

So how nonpartisan is the National Partnership for Women and Families? Check out its board of directors. Cheryl D. Mills's name stands out. She "gained national prominence for her defense of President Clinton during the 1999 Senate impeachment trial." Linda Bergthold is a blogger on the leftwing Huffington Post, with a recent contribution titled "The VP Choice that Lost the Presidency for McCain."

The next three board members listed, Ranny Cooper, Linda D. Fienberg, and Nikki Heidepriem, have made numerous contributions to the very partisan EMILY's List - whose "chair" is also on the board - and to various Democratic candidates. Dr. Vicky Lovell of the Institute for Women's Policy Research sees a contradiction between Palin's words and actions. That's a real surprise, especially coming from a Hillary Clinton contributor.

Not everyone believes that it's a legitimate function of government to meddle with private sector personnel policies. But I won't hold my breath waiting for CNN to find a "nonpartisan" group supporting that view.

this is right out of

the old playbook. Citing groups that agree with them (the MSM) and calling them nonpartisan, while the groups that disagree with them are the radicals. So what's that say about someone who views the normal majority of Americans as the outrageous ones?

"Green, the new Red."

That's right, non partisan

That's right, non partisan journalists from the MSM and non partisan investigators from the Obama campaign.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

Some advice for Dr. Vicki Lovell:

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends -- if they're okay, then it's you.

"Green, the new Red."

Another little fact glossed over by the media

A governor (or President) cannot unilaterally create legislation. All they can do is sign a bill from the legislature or veto it. The MSM always seems to forget that.

Yet they give Obama a passs when he vows to 'cut taxes' [except on some people], or make sure that all people are able to get health insurance, etc. All of his plans call for legislation to create new laws or change existing ones. He can't do that, only the legislature can. Even McCain makes claims that he can't fullfil and only the legislature can come through on (or not as the case may be).

Another example of the media being pundits and not reporters.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

I think BO may have other ideas.

Yep "He can't do that, only

Yep "He can't do that, only the legislature can" and why dont those senators and congress critters pass laws while they are in congress instead of waiting til they are President.  I mean if they dont have the pull to get any laws passed while in congress what makes us think they will have more pull as President who cannot make any laws.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Hmmm?

Has there ever been a group that was identified as "non-partisan" that had only Republicans or Conservatives on it? No? I didn't think so.

ACORN, the non-partisan, pro-voter group...

NARAL, the non-partisan, women's health advocacy group...

MediaMatters, the non-partisan, media watchdog group,

Media Research Center, the an ultraright wing, Republican smear machine...

Joe C... You hit the nail

Joe C...

You hit the nail right on the head with your examples...it is never-ending.

Actually though, they really are making arses of themselves 24/7 now in the extreme.

Easy to pull off - as long as nobody laughs at you.

And (DN)CNN promotes itself

And (DN)CNN promotes itself as "non-partisan"...showing that the network sure is cavalier with that description.

Ah yes, Jessica Yellin.

Ah yes, Jessica Yellin. Hmm, lesse. Isn't she the one who lied about being pressured by media corporate executives to put a nice spin on the war in Iraq? Why, yes, she is. Whatta surprise. Here's how that went down.

On May 28, 2008 she told Anderson Cooper on CNN:

“The press corps was under enormous pressure from corporate
executives, frankly, to make sure that this was a war presented in a
way that was consistent with the patriotic fever in the nation and the
president’s high approval ratings,”
she said.

She added: “The higher the president’s approval ratings, the more
pressure I had from news executives—and I wasn’t at this network (CNN) at the
time—to put on positive stories about the President.”

For this, she got her butt handed to her by her bosses, and issued the following retraction shortly after:

"Also, let me say: no, senior corporate leadership ever asked me to take
out a line in a script or re-write an anchor intro. I did not mean to
leave the impression that corporate executives were interfering in my
daily work; my interaction was with senior producers. What was clear to
me is that many people running the broadcasts wanted coverage that was
consistent with the patriotic fever in the country at the time. It was
clear to me they wanted their coverage to reflect the mood of the
country."

Is this a lie to explain a lie? ".... many people running the broadcasts wanted coverage that was
consistent with the patriotic fever in the country at the time."

Say what?

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

No wonder she's reporting from Alaska these days.
