Chicago Tribune's Page Bemoans 'Bloggers From The Right-Wing Loonasphere'

Today's contribution from the Chicago Tribune's Clarence Page, who also serves on the newspaper's editorial board, is "Enquirer scores— but about the aliens."  Clarence frets about mainstream media credibility under attack for not pursuing John Edwards's affair:

The blogosphere is abuzz with criticism of the mainstream media for allegedly failing to pursue the story of Edwards' alleged "love child" when the National Enquirer first reported it last year. In fact, major media did try to confirm the story without using the Enquirer as a source. It appears most of us in the MSM tend to be hung up on stodgy old-fashioned virtues like facts. The Edwards bombshell became problematic when none of the main parties in the story would go on the record to confirm the allegation. If you're going to use unnamed sources, which is questionable enough as a practice, at least make them your own sources, not those of a supermarket tabloid.

And later:

Nevertheless, now that the Enquirer bagged Edwards before anyone else, probably because of an insider's tip, bloggers from the right-wing loonasphere already are using the Edwards scoop to grant unearned credibility to other tabloid stories. These include loads of claptrap about Sen. Barack Obama, among other political newsmakers.

Page's denunciation of "the right-wing loonasphere" should be read with his own politics in mind.  Clarence is a standard issue liberal and has been one for a very long time.  Back in the 1980s he admitted that he'd been criticized for being too hard on President Ronald Reagan.  Another Page column at the time was typical:

If you think about the poor too long, you might not think so well of the Teflon President`s policies. Though he has yet to advocate starvation, one would be hard pressed to find anyone since Ebeneezer Scrooge who has asked the poor to put as much water into their daily soup.

In a statement that should assume its rightful position among his great bloopers--right up there alongside missiles that can be called back and trees that cause air pollution--Reagan said poor people get hungry because of their ``lack of knowledge`` of available food programs.

He ought to know. There once was a time when the federal government helped hungry people get the knowledge they needed. Beginning with the presidency of Richard M. Nixon, the federal government required that states provide such ``outreach`` services as home visits for the elderly and then it matched state expenditures. Then along came the Reagan administration and
federal outreach funds were eliminated during the big 1981 budget slash.

Who would have guessed it would take Ronald Reagan to make Richard Nixon look good!

Given his agenda, it's little wonder Clarence would focus on "the right-wing loonasphere" while having little criticism for the Democratic Underground, Daily Kos, and other highly credible sources.  It must be because he and his cohorts are " hung up on stodgy old-fashioned virtues like facts."

Sure.  I believe that.

here we go with the "facts" meme again

"...stodgy old-fashioned virtues like facts..."

We had a thread up a day or so ago with this same idiot statement about facts. The Lame Stream Media keeps thowing anything negative they get about conservatives on the front page and burying anything about lefties until the entire planet knows. If a terrorist says the military slaughtered civilians it goes front page. If upon fact finding it turns out to be not true it just fades away. Etc., etc., etc. If Tom Delay is accused of something it's a fact. If a Democrat goes to jail, "there's nothing to see here, move along now." If a Democrat gets caught with $90,000 in his freezer then once again there's nothing to print because they haven't been able to check the facts. I call BS.

With Ya Wiz

If "Facts" were so darned important to Page, The Trib, and the Media in general then the coverage on Obama would be 180 degrees from what it has been. Page is a Leftist pawn wrapped up in Obamamania and, as far as I have seen over the years, never correct. Page is a race baiter of the first degree, as well.

Page has probably read some of my posts recently on a few stories. It was extremely difficult to post any comment about the Edwards story because the Trib did not run one for awhile and when they did you could only find it on their website by doing a Search. It wasn't on the Home page. it wasn't on the Nation page either. No link was found anywhre without a search. The first story the Trib ran was an AP hit piece (of course, on the NE) and the 3 comments that were made on that story disappeared the next day. I did, however, place another comment. I mentioned that the Trib should "pass on". I only read John Kass and Victor David Hanson on the Trib's site. The rest is garbage.

Clarabell the Clown Page

The Trib has been slowly sinking into the sunset like the NYT. When they had no competition (I mean, come on now, the Sun Times as competition?) they, like the rest of the dead tree media could get away with all sort of truth bending. Now Clarabell looks like the hack that he is.

I used to love laughing at him on the Sunday panel shows. He's sort of the black male counterpart to that ditz Eleanor Clift. Neither one of them has been right on much of anything (if you'll pardon the pun).

Nonsense Clarence....

you and the rest of the old media are still smarting from the fact that bloggers forced your hand in reporting Edwards adulterous affair. It must be tough on you these days after a recent poll suggests more americans are on to your bias game,(thanks nb). You poor thing, boo-freakin-hoo!

Gee if only free speech

Gee if only free speech didn't exist, they wouldn't have to deal with loonies.

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

Thanks to ABC...

Actually, it was ABC News and Brian Ross who forced the rest of the MSM to report the story.  ABC News, to their credit, HAD been digging into the story and were about to go public with it when they asked Edwards for his side of it, as any good reporter would.  Edwards, in damage control mode, agreed to the interview but placed severe restrictions on it, chief of which was that Ross could not conduct the interview and it must air on Nightline which, conveniently, coincided with the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Does anyone actually think that Edwards decided to come clean on his own and just happened to pick ABC for his mea culpa? No, ABC forced him into it. He knew they had the goods on him. We like to criticize the MSM for their bias, and rightly so, but let's acknowledge when they do the right thing.  Without the ABC investigation, and Edwards' capitulation to them, the MSM would still be covering for this slime ball.

Sources

Just last week we had to go through the media's promotion of Ron Suskind's book, which alleged that unnamed sources in the White House instructed George Tenant to fake evidence against Iraq. Tenant flatly denied that. Suskind based his report on two officials that Suskind claimed saw or took part in creating the memo, but both sources flatly denied it. Yet, despite the fact that his own sources denied his story, Suskind's accusations were treated as pure fact, and congressional liberals warned of investigations. So much for facts.

Keep Suskind in mind when you hear "It appears most of us in the MSM tend to be hung up on stodgy old-fashioned virtues like facts."

No you aren't.

More Double Standard

Also, keep in mind the shameful NYT Page One story on McCain's "affair" which used unnamed sources.  Apparently unnamed sources are OK when you're after a Republican but not if a Democrat is the target.  But, according to them, they're not biased.  Right.

Excuses

The Trib along with all other Lame Stream Media outlets got caught with their pants down trying to cover for Edwards, but, but, but, they are trying to come up with an excuse. Time to be big boys and girls and fess up to the fact you were covering for Silky/Democrats and got caught. That's an embarassmen, not a death sentence. Well considering the condition of the Lame Stream Media it just might be a death sentence for several outlets and the unemployment line for a lot of employee's who will have  suck it up and learn to say, 'do you want fries with that'. The liberal education came with no other qualifications.

OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!

I did not realize for a long time. Turns out I am a far right rightwing nutjob that hangs out in the right wing loonasphere.

The right wing loonashere is all about things like the constitution, pride in the military, pride in the country, free markets, free trade, and smaller government. loony loony insane loopy nutty stuff there. I am this close to snapping! whew!

Nutjob, JWF

Conservatives have been portrayed as having a form of mental illness for a long time.  Back in '64 with Goldwater. . . .

cling JWF, cling!

Save yourself, cling to your Bible and guns!

Actually I was thinking of clinging to my .308 this weekend. I've got some old stuff I need to burn off and reload.

ROFL, Clarence you slay

ROFL, Clarence you slay me... LOL, sides hurts, ROFL.

So I guess manipulating the story line to support your candidate is a good old fashioned virtue???  For Tammany Hall maybe.  No Clarence, you, the MSM got caught with your pants down for all to see.  The story is not Edwards sleazy behavior, the story is how you, the MSM did battle with the Clintonites.  You're right, someone tipped off the NE (owned by a Clinton supporter) about Edwards, hmmmm, whom might that be...?  You, the MSM foiled the Clintons dirty tricks plot by keeping Edwards in the race.  Edwards siphoning votes from Clinton as Wolfson claims is irrelevant and debatable. In fact Wolfson's claim is nothing more than a ruse to justify the August Surprise.  Both of you, the MSM and the Clintonites are guilty of an extreme lack of ethics.  The public now sees both of you as equally corrupt.

And Clarence, you might want to start thinking about a new career since the Tribune Cos are in financial trouble.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

Obambi's Trib

The Trib really isn't concerned with Silky other than the fact he brought  the moral corruption of the entire democrat party front and center,  It doesn't look good for their boy Baraki since he was looking at Silky for VP.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

You deserve critisim

"In fact, major media did try to confirm the story without using the Enquirer as a source."

You’re not getting off that easily. If the “major media” did spend a year investigating this, as you claim, and they were STILL unable to "confirm" anything until John made his "confession" jus a few days ago, even though the evidence was readily available to anyone who actually looked (I mean, really, how hard can it be? After all, the National Enquirer didn't have much of a problem now, did they), then you are TERRIBLE investigators and you DESERVE our criticism. It’s ether that or you really DIDN’T investigate the story like you claim, in which case you are BIASED and you STILL deserve our criticism.

Ether way, you screwed up. That ALWAYS deserves criticism.

Notice the Left

Is attempting to marginalize the opposition, like they always do, by labeling anyone not agreeing with them as loony, nuts with views that are off the charts up there with alien abduction etc. With the left the truth never matters, only feelings and perceptions. Their blindness in the Edwards matter only reinforces the truth of their bias to the Democrat/Left side.

Hmm, Clarence Page. Let me

Hmm, Clarence Page. Let me see if my memory is correct.

Oh, yes. He's the lefty reporter who, for years, rampaged in his column against privately owned handguns. Nobody should have them. No one needed them.

Then, as luck would have it, he was caught with carrying his very own unlicensed handgun. For protection, you see.

What a dolt.

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

The Page on guns

I know a similar incident happened with the late Carl Rowan.

I never heard that about Page.

I believe it was Page.

I believe it was Page. There was some sort of incident around his swimming pool, someone tried to break in his house, as I remember. Page drew a gun on the guy (I would have also), and then the focus got put on Page for having a gun.

I might be wrong on the name, but I'm 99.99999 percent certain Page was the guy.

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

Nope it was Carl Rowan

This town needs an enema! - The Joker

connman's right (on this)

I don't know if Clarabell The Clown Page did something stupid like that, but the one you're referring to happened out in D.C. to Rowan - another hard core anti-gunner.

Apologies to all for

Apologies to all for accusing Page of hypocrisy re handguns. It was Rowan. Thanks for the correction.

(hitting self on head with 2X4 for writing something without verifying what I "remembered"). OK..I feel better now. ;+}

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

WHOAH! Not too self righteous, are we?

"The Edwards bombshell became problematic when none of the main parties in the story would go on the record to confirm the allegation."

So they were just waiting around for a year or so for Silky to get tired of lying and just admit it?

Think of all the investigative money/effort that could have been saved if John Gotti has just admitted he was guilty of all those crimes they charged him with. (Not equating Silky & Gotti here, but that seems to me the 'logic' Clarence is using here)

If the EN is a just supermarket tabloid, then what the hell is the NYT?

It appears most of us in

It appears most of us in the MSM tend to be hung up on stodgy old-fashioned virtues like facts.

That's true, Clarence and pals are hung up on facts.  When those facts don't work for them, they tend to contort them until they do.  Or, as in the John Edwards case, they ignore the facts and hope they'll just go away.

If you're going to use unnamed sources, which is questionable enough as a practice

That's funny, I don't remember Clarence having much of a problem with this "questionable practice" when Woodward & Bernstein were employing it to nail Nixon.

What's next, Clarence?  The dog ate my homework?

Part of the Deception

The "facts" angle is a typical deception the MSM uses to cover up their propagandistic purposes.

These people are experts at twisting facts, ignoring facts, strategically juxtaposing facts with other facts, etc. in order to create a desired perception in the minds of the readers.
