People's Weekly World Highlights Matthews's 'Great American'

Retired steelworker Steve Skvara tugged at the heartstrings of liberals everywhere when he asked Democratic presidential candidates at an August debate sponsored by the AFL-CIO, "What's wrong with America? And what will you do to change it?" The underlying premise of his question, that something's wrong with this nation because taxpayers aren't picking up the tab for his spouse's health insurance, made him an instant celebrity in certain circles.

Chris Matthews invited Mr. Skvara to his MSNBC Hardball program and told him, "You're a great American to speak so well to the needs of this country." Matthews later fawned, ""Well, can I pay tribute — can I pay tribute to you, sir?" The CBS Evening News described Skvara's query as a time when "a moment of truth breaks through a political campaign event." Since his debut, Mr. Skvara's popped up in the media numerous times, including Oprah Winfrey's show.

In its October 4 edition, People's Weekly World reports on a recent Chicago rally demanding single-payer health care. More than a third of the article is devoted to Steve Skvara, who "personified the devastating effects of a broken health care system on working families."

On Sept. 28, Skvara rallied with other health care advocates and groups at the State of Illinois building in downtown Chicago as part of a national day of action for single-payer health care.

“This country has the finest doctors and nurses in the world,” he told the World at the rally. “But it has the worst health care delivery system known, based on profit and greed and not on need.”

Skvara said people need to push lawmakers to back HR 676, the “Medicare for All” bill, a national health care bill that promotes universal health care in the United States.

“Who’s going to run this country? The corporations or the people who vote? We have to realize our potential and our power as voters,” he said. Ah, that old class struggle yet again.

People's Weekly World has an interesting history. It contends it's "the direct descendant of the Daily Worker" and "enjoy(s) a special relationship with the Communist Party USA, founded in 1919, and publish(es) its news and views."

Sometimes it's humorously asserted that great minds think alike. I don't know if that's true, but it certainly seems as though liberal minds think alike. It's only a hop, skip, and a jump from being paid tribute by Chris Matthews and garnering the attention of Oprah to Mr. Skvara finding himself approvingly quoted by People's Weekly World, a publication with that special relationship with Commies.

A September 23 piece in the (Northwest Indiana) Post-Tribune noted that "Skvara warned his four children not to look for him on the Internet" because of distressing stuff they might read. I don't blame him. If I were given favorable coverage in a publication that brags of being a direct descendant of the Daily Worker, I wouldn't want my kids to see it either.

Then again, Chris Matthews hasn't paid tribute to me as a great American. Yet.

I'm guessing

the gentleman would have been content if Chris had just paid him, period.

Chris Matthews pays, dervish?

Isn't it odd that out of Chrissy, Oprah, Edwards, all the otherDem candidates, the union, etc., it doesn't appear as though any of them are willing to pay for Mrs. Skvara's health insurance? They want you to.

Unions are great, but reform is needed

This man is a victim of stupid union and company promises. Reforms should be made that unions and companies cannot make contracts that put all the cost of the benefits for the future workers of the companies to pay off. Also unions should never be allowed for government workers. Teachers and Firefighters are just too wealthy.

President Reagan might have agreed.

The inherent problem with

The inherent problem with unions in general is that their constituents are usually hard-working people who don't have the time to run a union as well. This means that control of the union typically ends up in the hands of lawyers and such who don't understand what the rank and file members actually want. The teacher's union is an excellent example of this: It's publicly expressed views conflict with those of more than three quarters of its members, but the vast majority of them can't afford to fight to get those views changed.

Proving once again, he is as easy to entertain and thrill as a cat is with a laser light.

Gonna have to borrow a kitty and give that a try.

Actually, I think I have

Actually, I think I have posted in a long past "Good Morning America" thread ... on ABC where Diane and Robin were cooing over John Edwards out to breakfast somewhere about something completely inane and non-news worthy ... that a laser light wouldn't be out of the question to keep the morning TV show babes mentally entertained ...

Come to think of it ... Don't bother replacing anyone else on The View ... Just scribble a few laser lights all over the set.  More constructive and entertaining I would think.  I bet the audience would participate.

Entertaining TV show babes

It shouldn't take much as they're about as bright as Nancy Pelosi, about whom Ann C said the other day:

I CALL ON THE EDWARDS CAMPAIGN TO PAY FOR SKVARA's INSURANCE

The NewsBusters post on Skvara should also be of interest. Apparently, Skvara has chosen to be a professional victim for the John Edwards campaign. It is odd that a man who claims he cannot afford health care coverage for his wife is able to travel around and around to Democrat events.   Funnier still that a man with the ability to get himself on national television repeatedly, can't get a job to pay for health insurance for his substitute teacher wife.   (Yes he is disabled from a car accident in 1998 or 1999).

I call on the Edwards campaign to pay for Skvra's health insurance. John is very concerned about everyone, and Steve is closely associated with your campaign. Pitch in John.  Help this poor guy who can't "work" but can only kvetch on national TV.

In August I posted the following about Skvara.

I have a suggestion for Skvara. Why don't you take responsibility for you own life, instead of asking the government to solve your problems. Get a job, buy some health insurance if it is a tremendous priority.

In his question Skvara said:

After 34 years, with LTV Steel, I was forced to retire because of a disability.  Two years later, LTV filed bankruptcy.  I lost a third of my pension and my family lost their healthcare.  Every day of my life I sit at the kitchen table, across from the woman who devoted 36 years of her life to my family, and I can't afford to pay for her health care! What is wrong with America and what will you do to change it?

Skvra was born in 1947. He is a union activist. Prominent on that website is a boycott list, including Wal-Mart. Skvra previously appeared on Lou Dobbs  blaming the loss of American Jobs on Wal-Mart's desire for low prices.

LTV Steel filed for bankruptcy Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2000. It liquidated in 2001 after it could not reach a deal with the United Steelworkers Union.

By his own account, he begain working for LTV in 1964 when he was 17.  It is funny how all of his anger is directed at the government and the corporation. No anger is expressed to the Steel Workes Union, which was an active particpant in the bankruptcy of LTV Steel. No where does he accept personal responsibility for providing for his own family.  Nor does he turn to the union to which he paid dues for 34 years for help.

What Skvara did not tell you is that ISG Group, which bought the assets of LTV Steel has been working to increase coverage to people like Skvara.

International Steel Group (ISG), the company that bought the assets of LTV in 2002 and those of Bethlehem Steel in 2003, worked with the USW to establish a benefit trust fund called the ISG Voluntary Employees’ Benefit Association, or VEBA. VEBA offers prescription helpBy March 2005, the VEBA had sufficient funds to begin offering a prescription drug program to both Medicare-eligible and non-Medicare retirees and dependents who lost coverage through the bankruptcies. Medicare beneficiaries now have the option to receive prescription drug benefits from the VEBA plan or a Medicare Part D drug plan, but not both. Approximately 75,000 individuals were eligible as of early 2006.

Skvara also did not mention that he is an Edwards supporter who booed Hillary Clinton at a the take back America rally.

Edwards paying, allanf?

I believe all such requests must be sent through Mrs. Edwards. It appears she's the decision maker in the family.

Steve Introducing John Edwards

Well maybe John can take up the issue with Mrs. Edwards. I know John worked at a hedge fund to learn about poor people, so obviously he cares about people like Steve. Here is Steve introducing John Edwards at a rally.

Steve Skvara is the quintessential victim.  He can travel from rally to rally, yet he can't seem to figure out how to pay for his wife's health insurance policy.  Of course, no of this is Steve's fault.  The government should cover him.

It seems though that Steve has found a home, as the victim for the John Edwards campaign.

By the way Steve, was it JFK who said "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country?"

Rally to rally

I've wondered about that too. But here's a columnist who says:

Some have questioned his (Skvara's)specific financial and medical needs, asking media to investigate such things to "authenticate" his stance or character.

But it won't come from me.

I don't need authentication for Skvara's stance or character. Or his situation.

So I guess it's rude to ask.

Diabetes

Steve Skvara has insurance, it is his wife that he complained about. I believe his wife has diabetes, which may make some medical policies expensive. Indiana does provide Medicaid coverage for the medically needy.

In Steve's case, I'd tell him "There are no victims only volunteers".  If the Edwards campaign won't cover his wife, he really will have to weigh staying active in the campaign versus finding a job to help cover the cost of her insurnace.

(Unless he is so disabled that all he can do is campaign and complain).

(Unless he is so disabled

(Unless he is so disabled that all he can do is campaign and
complain).

Great line.

It reminds me of what my Grandfather would say
to me as a kid: are you going to sit there and complain, or just get up and do it.

Because, one way or the other, you are going to do it..

Skvara is no hero.  He's a goon-ion sock puppet used to keep the anachronistic, job killing labor unions politically relevant.  It's a shameful, if effective, tactic made worse by partisan clowns like Chris Matthews putting Skvara on an undeserved pedestal.

No hero

But he'll do until another Cindy Sheehan is deemed a celebrity as well as "spokesperson" for some favored Lefty cause.

Ask not what your country can do for yo

I think the conservative caption for Steve Skvara should be the JFK quote:

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country".

JFK quote

But the country soon learned, of course, that Kennedy was just joking about that.

Hmmm

Maybe Steve's song should be "Gimme Shelter?" or just Gimme, Gimme, Gimme
