Open Thread: Greeks in Private Sector vs. Public Sector

By Matthew Sheffield | June 14, 2012 | 10:38

A  A
Matthew Sheffield's picture

With its early retirement age and perpetually striking unions, the idea that the average Greek is lazy has a lot of truth to it. But things are not quite as simple as that. In fact, Greeks are a lot more hardworking than you would think. The stereotype is partially true, however:

The average Greek worker puts in 2,017 hours per year, more than any other European country. This is partly because there are more self-employed people, who tend to work longer hours, and fewer part-time employees to drag down the average.

There is also a problem with low productivity, particularly in the public sector, which employs around one-fifth of the population. Asked about the public sector, workers in the private sector mutter darkly about inefficiencies.

As the economic crisis deepens and the second Greek election in two months looms on Sunday, CNBC met plenty of Greeks who are belying the stereotype of laziness working without being paid.

Incidentally, according to the OECD, the average Greek worked 2,193 hours per year, second-most in the world. The average American worked 1,778 hours per year.

But those numbers don't paint a full picture either. The average Greek has to work so long because the country has insanely high tax rates, put in place to protect its cushy government jobs market. And that "austerity" you're hearing about? It's a myth also. Greece has kept all of its spending, it's just raised taxes:

U.S. policy analyst Juan Carlos Hidalgo, an author and commentator associated with the Washington-based Cato Institute, says bluntly: “If we look at [government]spending in real terms, there haven’t been any spending cuts in Greece.” In a series of reports titled “Looking at Austerity,” Mr. Hidalgo came to the same conclusion with Italy, Britain and France. [...]

Although controversial, some economists prefer to track public spending as a percentage of gross domestic product – regardless of fluctuations, in troubled times, in the size of a country’s economy. Mr. Hidalgo reports this measure as well.

In this case, Greece increased public spending from 47.1 per cent of GDP in 2000 to 53.8 per cent in 2009 – but has since cut spending to 50.3 per cent of GDP (a feat made easy by Greece’s decline in gross domestic product). The number does provide clarity. Greece is now a country precisely divided: half in the public sector; half in the private sector. And its austerity protects the public sector and punishes the private sector.

In January, The Economist noted this cruel difference: Of the 470,000 people who have lost their jobs since Greece hit the wall three years ago, “not one of them came from the public sector.” The public sector did take a 13-per-cent pay cut. But the government protected it from layoffs. (In exchange for its most recent bailout, Greece has agreed to cut its public sector work force by 2 per cent: a mere 15,000 people.)

Greece has designed its austerity program to protect its bloated public sector – and to pay for this extravagance through higher taxes. Indeed, The Economist reckons that the country’s tax rates are now so onerous that “many people can barely survive.”

Of course, tax rates are high in Greece but that's because there is so much tax evasion. Since so many people are refusing to pay their full amount, instead of cracking down and keeping rates the same, the Greek government continues to raise taxes on those who are willing to pay.

It's all really quite disturbing. But it's the future that America's government employee unions want for the rest of us. A pampered, wealthier class of "public servants" living high off the hog while an overworked and overtaxed private sector works tirelessly to keep the economy moving.

Why is the media trying to make Meghan McCain "happen"? It's the same with Chelsea Clinton. Neither of these women have done anything outstanding. Are we still in the Kennedy era where a person is regarded only on the basis of what family they are born into?

Only because they are Libs First

Chelsea Clinton, of course, is the daughter of Mommy and Daddy (Rodham) Clinton, so she is to be treated like a princess, no matter what she does.

Meghan McCain, of course, would be a nobody if she were, say, Meghan Reid (Harry's kid) or Meghan Biden. But because her Daddy was a prominent "rethug", and her views are more in line with Arriana Huffington, SHE is accorded rock star status because of the "embarassment" factor. In other words, Meghan is not being celebrated for her actual work; she's being celebrated because she undermines her GOP father!

The modern prototype for this type of celebrity, of course, is Ron Reagan. LibKiddies of GOP heavyweights are always going to be elevated to the high B-List, and sometimes the A-List depending on the current pop culture / slash / Democrat political talking point of the day.

Egypt is once again a military dictatorship. It's constitutional court declared that the lower house of parliament must be disolved because the election was unconstitutional. Military now claims full legislative power.

Stay tuned...no one is sure whether the people are making signs for the upcoming new election or molitov cocktails for the upcoming riots...

I look at this as kinda good news as this takes the power away from the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists.

Obeyme has got to be mad about this though, which suits me fine, anything that makes that manchild mad is good enough for me.

I don't know about a military dictatorship.

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 06/14/2012 - 1:45pm.

Egypt is rapidly becoming a Judicial Dictatorship. The Court dissolved the entire Parliament because it decided that 1/3 of the seats were "elected illegally," but what about the other 2/3? Why was the entire Parliament dissolved, including the legally elected seats? All that was needed was to nullify the election results that they found to be illegal. They didn't have to dissolve the entire Parliament. There's no legally valid reason for it. But they did it anyways. That's Judicial Dictatorship in action.

Greece is EXACTLY where Bambi wants to take the USSA.

He needs more voters dependent on the gummint than voters who are making it on their own.

If we don't bounce his commie/fascist ass in November, we will be Greece!

If Da One is reelected, and he orders us to "Lean Forward," the hardworking taxpayers are gonna need some Greece.

MSNBC's Bashir Response

Submitted by ThisnThat on Thu, 06/14/2012 - 3:18pm.

First time I have actually watched Bashir. What a joke. Here's what he said in the first 5 minutes:

  • o'bama carefully deconstructed Romney -- and is a hero because of this. And he did something Romney simply can't do -- he laid out a real vision for the middle class.
  • And while o'bama was speaking, Romney was traveling down the road in his giant bus wasting gas.
  • The President reclaimed the upper hand today.
  • And the most important word o'bama used today was "choice".
  • And all Romney wants to do is to get us all angry.
  • Romney's speech was simply nonsense -- nothing of policy. Just wanted to bash the president.
  • Romney wants to make this election a matter of venting.
  • Romney had a very small audience for his speech today.
  • Romney, in his speech today, is beginning to sound like a pathological liar.

The bias was literally dripping down this man's chin. Whenever he talked about Romney, his voice became monotonic and sarcastic. Bashir didn't even pretend to show anything other than absolute 100% love and support for o'bama.

Surprisingly, just before this Bashir prostitute came on the air, the previous MSNBC guests panned o'bama's speech as "one of the worst we've heard". But they recovered, by pleading: "Please, o'bama, tell us "how" to turn around the economy."

Not only is he blaming Bush,

Submitted by ThisnThat on Thu, 06/14/2012 - 2:39pm.

Not only is he blaming Bush, but it's going to take a full week and a half just to tabulate his lies and bu$$shite. For example: "My administration has produced fewer regulations than any previous administration". And his vision for America? Quote: "By a fair and balance approach to taxes. I want to make sure those that are able, pay their fair share. President Reagan raised taxes to control soaring debt. We are on-plan to grow the economy. My vision works for the middle class. I want to recruit an army of teachers, and pay them more. We'll let illegals earn the chance to become citizens. We're producing more oil now than at any time the past decade. Now is the time to invest in clean energy - my plan is to eliminate all oil subsidies and give that money to clean energy companies."

Of course how does Google choose to commemorate this day? As they normally do with Patriotic days in US history, they do NOTHING.

Bing on the other hand have a whole mess of American Flags flying!!!

Guess which search engine I always default to?

I put them in alphabetical order. Originally, I had two in quotes (still do) that I put at the top, I should probably move those and remove the quotes.

So....."Get Your Keys On".....or "Second Verse, Same as the First".

Like that....in alpha order. So the numbers are always moving around.
