Open Thread: Masculine Men Vote Republican?

By Matthew Sheffield | April 12, 2012 | 09:45

Matthew Sheffield's picture

Today's starter topic: Are liberals more likely to be "girlie men?" According to a study out of Australia across a number of countries, men who are more masculine tend to be more likely to support conservative political ideologies.

If that claim is true, does it mean that liberal men are less likely to be physically strong or have lower levels of testosterone? Somehow it seems unlikely you'll see a study touting this idea. But while we're waiting, here's the Daily Telegraph's summary of the masculine men study:

Researchers cite muscle-bound Hollywood action heroes like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone as evidence that aggression is linked to conservative politics. [...]

Researchers from Griffith University in Australia said the Hollywood examples were typical of a phenomenon among modern men with an aggressive side.

They tend to build up their upper body strength and become subconsciously obsessed with their fighting ability, they told the journal Human Nature.

Lead researcher Aaron Sell said men were 'designed for fighting' and the tougher they are, the more this influences their behaviour and attitudes.

Men are better designed to respond rapidly to threats, avoid something that is thrown at them or be able to catch it, and are better at taking a punch, he said. [...]

In political terms they tend to take the more right wing view - be it Conservative in the UK or Republican in the US.

The researchers looked at the political attitudes of actors in Hollywood and found those who played action stars were more likely to support military action by the US overseas.

The study said: "Those actors known for their physical strength and formidability, among them Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone, were more likely to support military action.

"Generally speaking, Hollywood actors are left wing, but the action stars among them were more likely than not to support the Republican position on foreign policy.

Does this idea make sense to you?

GOP in New Hampshire favors "girlie men"

Submitted by lrgon on Thu, 04/12/2012 - 12:04pm.

at least according to the vote in the state legislature where the Republican Party voted down a repeal of a law allowing homsexuals to play pretend at marriage.

The NH Republican Party holds a vast majority over the "soft on traditional" marriage Democrats, yet lo and behold, lookie at the "girlie men" in that GOP controlled legislature voting to fill the putrid "gai" wine wine barrels with GOP noir.

"Today is a banner for the freedom to marry." --- co-chairman Craig Stowell, a Claremont Republican

http://thenewamerican.com/culture/family/11286-nh-house-kills-repeal-of-...

There are a few godly men in the New Hampshire legislature but these men lost out in the vote to ban the fraud known as "civil unions" or "gai marriage" and defend the sacrament of marriage due to too many "girlie Republicans" running around like little girls showing off their pretty pink dresses.

This from the article

Submitted by Tugboat Phil on Thu, 04/12/2012 - 1:44pm.

Marriage is the legally recognized union of 2 people. Any person who otherwise meets the eligibility requirements of this chapter may marry any other eligible person regardless of gender. Each party to a marriage shall be designated "bride,'' "groom,'' or "spouse."

Clearly not in the America of 2011.  Once marriage is no longer 1 man, 1 woman, it has lost any meaning of a definition.  Within a few years it will mean any combination of beings, human and non, that can be thought of by someone with a lawsuit.

This is funny. Though Schwarzenegger became less and less "conservative" in office, making me sorry I voted out Gray Davis.

Maybe marrying a liberal has a testosterone reducing effect.

We already had the "Mommy" party (Democrats) and the "Daddy" party (Republicans) so what's the big surprise?
It's certainly no surprise to me that men who make excuses for their shortcomings and expect others to pick up their slack would vote Democrat.

I can see it to some degree.

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Thu, 04/12/2012 - 11:46am.

I can see it to some degree. Sorry ladies, but females *tend* (notice I said *tend*) to base a lot more of their opinions on emotion than men: Women tend to get swept up in superficial trends involving fashion and women tend to be the ones swept up in celebrity idolization. Go to any mall and 90% of the products are ever-changing female fashions and go to any grocery store and you'll see the reading material geared to females: Us Weekly, People, etc...

Another, and more political example, is the recent outrage over Limbaugh's comments against that perpetual law student: intellectually she had no ground to stand on (it is not her right to demand anyone give her anything) but when her position was framed as sexist, women gobbled it up in droves.

Stereotypical characteristics of manliness involve independence, self-reliance, and a near Vulcan-like suppression of emotions. Therefore the knee-jerk emotionalism of the policies of dependence on government would make a liberal man "girlie".

BTW: I find it funny that I read this on the same day I found: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/9197597/Strong-m...

As far as I'm concerned, no apology necessary. Men and women are wired differently because we are designed for different roles. Men are the providers. They need to think logically, plan, and use the extra muscle mass to feed and shelter their families. Women are more emotional to bind them to the children who require care for years before they are independent. Someone has to stay home and nurture, we got wired that way.

I'm not sure I can agree as much about the celebrity idolization. I suppose as women we are geared toward socialization more, again, as a function of protecting and nurturing the family. Men might be less so because they are competing with one another for resources.

It seems our society is trying to make women into men, and men into women. Sucks doesn't it?

I wonder if liberal men are

Submitted by ForeverOnTheRight on Thu, 04/12/2012 - 12:00pm.

I wonder if liberal men are more likely to have been raised in a single mother home, or have an absentee father or even where the mother dominates the marriage? Boys imitate their father, if there is no father, who do you imitate? Or if the father is dominated by the mother, what kind of man will he turn out to be? A wimpy man who resents women? Sounds like Obama’s life. Wonder if Michelle runs his life? Wonder if Hillary runs Bill’s life?

Right is never wrong, Left is never right.

That could explain why I'm a conservative

Submitted by dzejk113 on Thu, 04/12/2012 - 1:02pm.

I was raised in what's now becoming an "old-fashioned" way I guess. My dad was the bread-winner, and my mom was a stay at home mom. When me or my sisters misbehaved, we got punished for it. I was one of those boys that was taught boys don't cry, you have to be tough. My dad taught me how to fight when I was 5 or 6 years old, after some other kid punched me one day.

This also reminds me of one of the liberal's favorite excuses for criminal behavior: "his daddy didn't tell him he loved him" or "his daddy didn't hug him enough" or some BS like that. Last year when I called my dad for father's day, he told me he loved me, and to be honest it kinda freaked me out, I never expected him to say that. I couldn't tell you the last time my dad told me he loved me before that, and yet somehow I didn't grow to be some psycho deranged criminal. My dad raised me to be tough, that's why I joined the military, and that's probably why I'm a conservative.

I heartily accept the motto "That government is best which governs least" . . . Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe -- "That government is best which governs not at all" -Henry David Thoreau

What were they expecting, something racist about anything he does at this point?  Horrors, he got beef sticks, that's racist!  Horrors, he got soap, bet it was white, that's racist!  Horrors, some of the items might have been white, that's racist right there!(nevermind the fact that he's looking more and more like a hispanic, good example would be Bill Richardson)

I got a feeling this is going to blow up spectacularly in the faces of those who think Trayvon is an innocent angel, just like Rodney King was, and those people will be so embarrassed, they'll have to have a riot or three to save face.
