Obama Makes Another Military Gaffe: Mistakes Fallen Soldier for Living One

By Matthew Sheffield | June 24, 2011 | 11:30

Matthew Sheffield's picture

Liberals in and out of the media are constantly telling us that President Barack Obama is a really smart guy. He's a "genius" in the words of his chief sycophant Chris Matthews. And yet, for such a supposedly smart guy, Obama seems to be ill-informed about many things, like the fact that we have 50 states in this country or that the word corpsman isn't pronounced like a dead body.

The latest Obama gaffe came yesterday in a speech he gave to the Army's 10th Mountain Division in which he mistakenly identified a fallen member of that division as another soldier in a completely different Army unit who is alive.

As he so often does, Obama was speaking about himself before making the major gaffe:

First time I saw 10th Mountain Division, you guys were in southern Iraq.  When I went back to visit Afghanistan, you guys were the first ones there.

I had the great honor of seeing some of you because a comrade of yours, Jared Monti, was the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn’t receiving it posthumously.

Trouble is, however, SFC Monti did, in fact, receive the award posthumously in 2009, three years after he was killed in Afghanistan in 2006. Obama did award the Medal of Honor to a living Army service member, Sal Giunta, a staff sergeant in another Army unit, the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Video is below:

Besides that gaffe, it's also worth noting that apparently Obama thinks being a presidential candidate is somehow service to the country. Right before making the gaffe above, he said the following:

Throughout my service, first as a senator and then as a presidential candidate and then as a President, I’ve always run into you guys. And for some reason it’s always in some rough spots.

Two gaffes in the span of a minute, neither of which will be reported by our state-run media. Tip of the hat to Blackfive who adds:

How does the Commander-in-Chief mix these heroes up? He put that medal around Giunta's neck and he stood with Monti's parents as they grieved. These fallen heroes leave such a great legacy, and we should know all their names. The ironic part of the speech, and this comes after the announcement of the politically pressured drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, was Obama's closing remark, "Know that your Commander-in-Chief has your back."

Indeed. But perhaps we're wrong. Maybe the real reason Obama makes mistakes like this isn't that he's stupid or just doesn't care about the little people. Maybe it's that his brain is just too smart for his mouth to keep up with, as Los Angeles Times columnist Meghan Daum laughably tried to argue earlier this year.

Update:  Just as expected, the network nightly newscasts have ignored this story. That's particularly egregious for NBC which spent three consecutive shows discussing Sarah Palin and Paul Revere. One would think that if alleged verbal miscues are going to be reported on that those of the president/commander in chief are slightly more newsworthy than those of a person who currently holds no political office and is not currently running for another one.

But at least he not like that stupid, evil, cowboy, Bush! Boy wonder continually steps in it with his patent leather shoes and the boot licking media continues to clean it off for him!

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 06/24/2011 - 2:14pm.

Here's what liberal nut jobs are saying about Palin's historically accurate Paul Revere remarks: The matter is more one of a basic respect for knowledge. For without intellectual engagement (and working at getting facts straight), you're not qualified to tell anyone that you have a vision for America's future.

Will anyone say that about obama's obvious incorrect statements of history -- that he participated in, for crying out loud? NO. Not a chance. We're all to remain blissfully ignorant of how blatently stupid this guy is, because the MSM has been bought and paid off.

First time I saw 10th Mountain Division, you guys were in southern Iraq.
Must have been the “Magic Mushroom Brigade” cuz the 10th Mountain Division was never in Southern Iraq.
The 10th Mountain Division was deployed to Iraq for the first time in April 2008.
They operated in the Kirkuk area, 460 miles from Southern Iraq. (Operation Phantom Phoenix)
147 miles north of Baghdad!
And the 10th Mountain Division, this storied -- this group that has been there for America day in, day out throughout our history, was the first folks to go in after that order was given.
throughout our history? Really?
The 10th Mountain Division was activated 15 July 1943! Google it! Gezzzzzzz!

Injest: How petty can you

Submitted by tombaker on Fri, 06/24/2011 - 6:52pm.

Injest: How petty can you get. The President (unfortunately his is, until the next election) mixed up some names, while otherwise honor servicemen. Great you get a thrill and pointing out the blunder.

It would have been wrong for the Media to attack Bush on the same, and while you all speculate the media would have done that, you just don't know, it can not be known.

So it would be wrong to do to Bush, yet you want to go after Obama in the way that you would be wrong to treat Bush. Twit

1. Southern vs Northern Iraq....who cares, just call it Iraq, same crappy place.
2. Throughout our history, does not equal "our entire history". Did you bother to learn the English?

Such mambie pambie bitching, You disrespect the 10th Mountain Division, with your hair pulling and giggling remarks. Does not our history show that the 10th Mountain Division throughout the years has been the first in? Nearly 3/4th of a Century of fighting for America does not rate with you as "through out years"

The only person that disrespected the 10th Mountain Division was Obama. In his attempt to score points by mentioning a fallen hero and a respected military unit, he failed miserably. Your attempt to defend him, also a fail.

Actually, tb,

Submitted by UpNorth on Fri, 06/24/2011 - 11:19pm.

and that is truly a good name for you, you missed Moooshelle's statement that President Present has a mind like a steel trap, that, in fact, "He has a gift in that way, able to retain information, know more than those who are briefing him, asking critical questions, because all of those wins and losses are not wins and losses for him [but] they are wins and losses for the folks whose stories he carries with him, the folks that he worries about and prays about before he goes to bed at night,” she said,".  So, I"m throwing the BS flag, he could care less, because if he did care, according to the First Wookie, he would have known who SFC Monti was and who SSG Giunta is.

As for your statement that the 10th Mountain, "throughout the years has been the first in", sorry, but you fail the fact test, yet again. U.S. Special Forces were the first troops with "boots on the ground" in Afghanistan,   The first conventional troops in Afghanistan were the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, in Novemeber of 2001, setting up Camp Rhino.  The 10th Mountain weren't the "first in" in Desert Storm either, and they weren't in Korea, either.

And the 10th Mountain wasn't the first in to Italy in WWII either.  Your grasp of U.S. military history is abysmal, as is your grasp of any other facts.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.
