Glenn Beck to End Fox News Program to Pursue Oprah Route

By Matthew Sheffield | April 06, 2011 | 13:09

Fox News host Glenn Beck and the news channel announced today that Beck is going to be quitting his show. The following statement was put out to the media:

(New York, NY) Fox News and Mercury Radio Arts, glenn Beck’s production company, are proud to announce that they will work together to develop and produce a variety of television projects for air on the Fox News Channel as well as content for other platforms including Fox News’ digital properties. Glenn intends to transition off of his daily program, the third highest rated in all of cable news, later this year.

Roger Ailes, Charman and CEO of Fox News said, “Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody’s standards. I look forward to continuing to work with him.”

Glenn Beck said: “I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News. I cannot repay Roger for the lessons I’ve learned and will continue to learn from him and I look foward to starting this new phase of our partnership.”

Joe Cheatwood, SVP/Development at Fox News, will be joining Mercury Radio Arts effective April 24, 2011. Part of his role as EVP will be to manage the partnership and serve as a liasiaon with the Fox News Channel.

Roger Ailes said: “Joe is a good friend and one of the most talented and creative executives in the business. Over the past four years I have consistently valued his input and advice and that will not stop as we work with him in his new role.

“Glenn Beck” is consistently the third highest rated program on cable news. For the 27 months that “Glenn Beck” has aired on Fox News, the program has averaged more than 2.2 million total viewers and 563,000 viewers 25-54 years old, numbers normally associated with shows airing in primetime, not at 5pm. “Glenn Beck” ahs dominated all of its cable news competitors since launch.

Unmentioned in the release is the pressure that Beck has been under from far left extremists trying to censor all conservative voices on television regardless of their opinions or demeanor. Also not mentioned is that Beck has long wanted to have a prime time slot on FNC. That does not appear to have been in the cards considering the strong ratings for FNC's current nightly anchors Bill O'Reilly, Shepard Smith, Sean Hannity, and Greta Van Sustren.

Beck's departure from daily television for his own financed products is strikingly similar to Oprah Winfrey's ending of her daily syndicated show.

Best Wishes, Glenn

Submitted by Secret Conservative on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 1:20pm.

He can probably make more money by producing his own programs and syndicating them or selling them to Fox or whoever else will buy them. Fox wasn't going to boot one of their prime time hosts for him, and he can gain a larger audience than a 5 PM slot. More power to you, Glenn!

I'll miss Glenn, but his work

Submitted by poseA on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 1:24pm.

I'll miss Glenn, but his work is done. He's almost singlehandedly awakened a predominately slumbering electorate.

His work is not done.

Submitted by MikeB on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 1:44pm.

I disagree, poseA, his work is not done, but rather, just beginning.  Yes, he has helped in the awakening of a slumbering electorate, but now that electorate needs to be kept from hitting the snooze alarm and getting another 4 or 40 years of sleep.

Beck will be able to reach even more Americans with this new venture, so all the best to him.

This is hardly surprising

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 1:33pm.

I remember seeing an episode of Beck when one of his guests was the author, Vince Flynn.

Both Beck and Flynn admitted that they were diagnosed as ADHD kids. And both said it while it was a PITA as a kid, it has its real benefits as an adult, one being able to multi-task and really focus on entrepreneurial pursuits. In the past year, we've seen Beck publish a couple of books, hold a (real) million person rally, travel around the country doing live events, as well as having his daily radio and television shows. THAT's ALOT OF WORK!

His daily gig on FoxNews was just another stepping stone.

I wish him all the best, and most of all, I wish him safety, the liberal loonies are after his head. I hope he has a mean bunch of ex-SEaLs as security. Anyone who infuriates liberals the way he does is okay in my book.

I shudder to think of having a tiny SoL in a classroom. Particularly one with ADHD (which I personally think is a load of crap). Kids have energy, the smaller they are, the more they have. We call the 3 1/2 year old "Hurricane". And he's Force 5.

Beck has too many

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 4:37pm.

Beck has too many conspiracies going for me. I tend to shy away from the more radical ones on both sides. Its Soros or Koch Bros or ..... fill in the blank. Perhaps the complexity is what these conspiracies thrive on, teh more complex and outlandish the more they can hide in plain sight. Like the conspiracy to make Vampires a cartoon character when they are very dangerous.

I've watched most of his shows, and I don't remember any Koch brothers conspiracies.

And I already knew Soros was a self-loathing human being, rationalizing his opportunistic Nazi past as nothing more than situational ethics.

It is no accident that the Obama Administration is enabling an uprising against Israel at such a time as this.

I'm glad.

Submitted by almostacowboy on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 5:18pm.

Glenn took up valuable educational time formerly filled by Mike Church, a true American conservative, little "r" republican, Constitutional and founding father scholar, with his own mix of sometimes honest exposé (Van Jones, etc.) and sometimes ADHD (his claim, not mine) rambling silliness. I'd listen to Glenn on Sirius Satellite (formerly Mike Church's spot) on the way to work and I never knew if I was going learn something worthwhile or get so depressed I'd want to drive into a canyon.
Don't get me wrong, I like Glenn. Just not as much as I like hot fudge, but I can't eat hot fudge every day either. I just find Mike Church and his guests ( Thomas Woods, Kevin Gutzman, Peter Schiff, Ron & Rand Paul) and discussions on Austrian School of Economics and the founding fathers a lot more educational. Then you throw in Mike's great parody songs ("Mr. Jefferson") and his historical and accurate movies and that's a winning combo. Your mileage may vary.

Good luck, Glenn.

Welcome back Mike.

Beck Cancelled?

Submitted by ThisnThat on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 8:52pm.

Did Fox cancel Beck's show?

That's what the MSNBC 8:00pm liar has (O'Donnell) just put forth. As he put it, "Beck has been canceled because of 2 years of embarrassment and declining viewership". He also said "On its best night, Beck is watched by less than 1% of the U.S. population. And Beck can't get advertisers". And, "Beck;s radio and other ventures are now in jeopardy by the collapse of his TV show".

Now --- this garbage was spewed out at 8:48pm to both of O'Donnell's viewers, mind you. But I guess none of those viewers happen to be any fact-checker or program producer at MSNBC, because otherwise they would have pulled the plug until O'Donnell stopped telling out-right lies on TV. Right?

I noticed Matthews skipped over that "loss of a million viewers" by Beck. Possibly because it's not true, possibly because Matthews doesn't have a million viewers. Must be hard to recognize Beck may have lost more than he has.

I wish Beck hadn't done this. To much fodder for the left.

Goldline

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 10:00pm.

I'm sorry to see Beck quit his television show.  His radio show is a ton more entertaining then his television show, but there were many an occasion where his television show could be much more educational, particularly his Friday,  pre-recored shows.  Beck didn't have any problem with viewers, but he did have a problem with advertisers.  I don't think it's Beck's choice that 75% of his advertisers were pitching buying gold, (just a guess on the percentage!....maybe it's not 75%, but is sure seemed that way!).

Even though Beck had the audience, I don't think he was generating the revenue that he should have.  I don't think Goldline pays as much for an ad spot as Darden or Chrysler, (two advertisers I just saw as I was typing this while having Sean Hannity in the background).

I look forward to seeing Beck's future programs, because I think when he has more time to work on a particular project, he does a much better job then when he is doing a daily show on the fly.

I'd love to see Stossell take over Beck's spot.  Stossell's FBN show is good, but given a bigger budget, he can be so much better.

If you liked Beck on television, you'll love him on the radio!  Go Glenn!  Buy gold!  (But not "rare" gold coins marked up at 35% with no secondary market.)

Cowards Indeed

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 10:45pm.

When a major cable television advertiser intentionally steers away from advertising on Beck's show, but doesn't bat an eye when it comes to letting their ads run on any MSNBC evening show, there is indeed a problem.  My guess is that the concerted effort on the part of the left just finally wears down whoever is in charge of placing these time slots.

Just as the left will go to extremes when it comes to trying to get their point across, such as acts of vandalism and physical assault, the left also uses more extreme, in-your-face tactics when it comes to trying to silencing their critics in the media.

If the right is pushed far enough, the tactics will eventually balance out.  It could get ugly.

Best Glenn Beck quotes

Submitted by Icarus on Wed, 04/06/2011 - 11:05pm.

"The government is full of vampires, and they are trying to suck the lifeblood out of the economy. Do you have teenage daughters, by any chance? I have two teenage daughters, and they love this series called Twilight, and I actually had to go with them to the movie, and it was great because other teenage daughters were sitting behind me and they're like, 'Oh, he's so dreamy'. Yeah, there he is. All right. If you saw that movie, you know that vampires, once they sink their fangs into the neck, they just can't stop drinking the blood. They can't control themselves."

Arguably my favorite Glenn Beck moment

Submitted by Icarus on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 2:16pm.

is "Glenn Beck's War Room" from Feb. 20, 2009.

"All right. I want to stress that we are not predicting these things are going to happen. We are asking you — what do you do if they happen? Can they be prevented? Let's look at our first scenario. It's the financial meltdown. The year is 2014. All the U.S. banks have been nationalized. Unemployment is about between 12 percent and 20 percent. Dow is trading at 2,800. The real estate market has collapsed. Government and unions control most of the business, and America's credit rating has been downgraded."

Absolutely delightful.

Disembodied announcer person: "Warning: Topics discussed on today's program may be disturbing to some viewers. The views expressed on this program are not predictions of what will happen, but what could happen. The panelists have been asked to think the unthinkable. Viewer discretion is advised."

Ah ha!

"Here's our second scenario: Global civil unrest. Now, the United States is no longer the world's policeman. Mexico has been taking over by narco gangs. Oil and gas pipelines have been targeted and destroyed. Tourism nonexistent due to safety concerns.Ukraine is the first European country to fail, eastern European. Ireland is the first western country to fail. Fifty million people worldwide are unemployed. There are riots in the streets."

Dear God, not the tourism!
