Addressing Your Concerns About the New Site Design

By Matthew Sheffield | October 21, 2010 | 18:11

Matthew Sheffield's picture

Hey NBers. I want to take this opportunity to apologize for the shaky roll-out of the new site design. I understand that there has been a lot of frustration with some missing features, and elements of the new layout. I want to make sure your concerns are addressed.

Most of these issues were completely unexpected, though that is always a danger when you unveil a new website. We are constantly trying to iron out all of the issues while still providing the quality content you all have come to expect.

Our vendor encountered more challenges than they anticipated in transitioning to our new site as we simultaneously moved to new servers, unveiled new features and content blocks while also upgrading to a new version -- with more capabilities -- of the under-lying blog software. We did all three at once so we'd only have to interrupt service once, not on three separate occasions. Several significant problems have been addressed. Be assured, we are pressing our vendor to resolve the remaining issues, and they are working to fix them even if it's not going as fast as we'd like.

So here's where we stand: in a few days, we expect to have all major functionality issues worked out. That includes faulty formatting issues and problems with the mobile site. Once that is out of the way, we are going to get to work on making the site more user-friendly, including addressing column width, and problems with the forums and comment threads. After that, we will get the site in line aesthetically.

I really appreciate your patience while we get this all worked out. Believe me, no one wants the new site at full capacity more than I do. Rest assured that we are hearing your concerns, and that they will be addressed shortly. Thank you for sticking with us while we get through this upgrade process.

Will there be a track function? Will we have 300 comments per page again? I realize these things take time, I think NBers are frustrated there are no specifics on what we will get back edit I swear there is no sarcasm here, but is there a reason for rolling out a site with bugs a month before the election?

I am with Bal here. This new design is very shrubber-unfriendly.

No Open Thread means no Shrub Report, no Natalie Portman photos, and no Weekend Sports Thread, stuff that gave many of us NBers a brief respite from the constant drone of pointing out the obvious left-wing media bias.

Appreciate the difficulties of revamping a site

Submitted by CO2Maker on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 6:42pm.

I've done software beta testing for 4 years and know what is involved in getting the kinks out.

While I have your attention:

Why is "Home" and "Blog" almost—but not exactly—identical? I like the extra information on the Blog page, so why not just merge the two (i.e.; make the Blog configuration the Hone configuration)?

Me too...The Home page is...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 9:24pm.

basically just an annoyance now because it doesn't list all the blogs with the number of posts to each blog, as the old site used to do on the home page. I kept ending up going to the home page to start with, and would inevitably go to the blogs page to find out how much activity there is on each blog topic, which is an important and useful thing to know, imho. Finally, i just bookmarked the blogs page to save time and frustration.

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 8:44am.

One of the things that I LIKE about the new configuration is the NB Extras....

OK,  TWO things...the other is the fact that you now bring in other columnists, like Michelle Malkin, Bob Tyrell and David Limbaugh.

I'm sure when all the wrinkles are ironed out, it will be great.

Second that

Submitted by KC Mulville on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 2:01pm.

I like the columns. They're sources where others are combating liberal bias, and often address deeper concerns. Instead of focusing on specific episodes, they draw out more abstract arguments, and I like that.

I'll third it, KC & MB

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 2:14pm.

I really like quite a bit of the front page.

The moveable Banner Blogs across the top are pretty cool and an easy way to navigate back to a topic where you've previously posted and want to revisit.

I really like middle column and its content.  The NB Extras are great, I just wish the authors name was attached.  It would be cool to have NB Extras include rants by some of our more thoughtful posters (*ahem* that would be you KC).

The CNS News location is good, too.  I never really noticed it much before, but I like it's new location.

Love the columnists in the middle column, too.  Love the fact that their pictures are used.

We really need 10 or more recent comments, though, by the time you click on one and read, when the site gets busy, other ones you want to check out have already scrolled off the page.

Once the page width (and length) gets fixed, this site is going to be great.

Although I have to say, I really can do without all of the Social Network stuff all over the place (and particularly at the bottom of each blog where it fires the big box whenever your mouse gets remotely close).

Personally, I'd move around some of the stuff in the right hand column, but that's just my picky nature, it's kind of unimportant in the overall scheme of things.

Oh, one final "must fix" for me...change the "Save" to "Post".

And maybe move the Post & Preview keys over to the right side of this column.  I have mistakenly hit the Save button several times instead of "HOME" and I end up posting a blank comment.  More than once, how embarassing!

There are however, as I'm sure you are very aware, a number of issues that many of us have with the new site. We are all being patient, and are hoping that the favorite functions that are now missing will make a return, like a tracking function. Also, being able to have a signature at the end of a post would be nice to get back, as would making the gray comment font darker...The site is also just more difficult to navigate than the old site, so that would be nice to see addressed.

Thanks again for all the hard work.

It does that for everyone, but I'd rather that "Read More" took me to the next line of the article, not back to what I've already read. Brietbart's sites do that so it can't be hard for someone who knows what they're doing.

Thanks for the update- it's much appreciated. I know it's been a trying transition, but I trust NB won't settle for less than ideal. Nice to know user input is actually sought-after and addressed;  doubt that's the case in most of the other major forums.

One thing I do know, NB still has amazing traffic, even if the rollout has unintentionally cut down on comments. I somewhat discretely (discrete in that I didn't make a huge deal about it in my comment or the subject line) posted a link to one of my older photoshops on Flickr two days ago. That one post resulted in more than 1500 hits on that image from NB alone. And I'm nobody.

So thanks NB for the hard work.

Tracking

Submitted by KC Mulville on Sun, 10/24/2010 - 12:58am.

If someone replies to an argument I'm making, I may not get to it until hours later. Most days, work will dominate my attention and I can go eight hours before I can reply. By then, I've probably forgotten every issue, and eight hours later, I can't remember what to respond to. Meanwhile, the other person thinks I'm a jerk for not responding. (Yeah I know, they may think I'm more of a jerk if I respond, but that's the chance you take.)

The tracking feature, for me, is a courtesy. I'd love to see it restored.

I still don't like the new format

Submitted by Captain Kirock on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 7:29pm.

You asked for it so here it is: NB's new website is terrible.   With the huge margins, I need a magnifying glass to read anything on my 22 inch monitor.   Although I do not comment often, the lack of a trackback feature is bad.  Also, as a new feature a spell checker for comments would be nice.

It's too bad because NB has been one of my favorite sites for years now.   I always felt the format of the comment section was one of the best, allowing commenters to easily respond directly to each other.  I do not get the same feel with the new comment section.

I also question wisdom behind the timing of this. Honestly, who thought it was a good idea to roll out the new web site a month before the election?

I'm in Windows 7 Pro, but it's been this way as long as I can remember. If your mouse has a scroll wheel, try holding the "ctrl" key while scrolling the wheel...

Submitted by Guttermouth's Return on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 8:02pm.

Yeah, the "control+scroll" works to zoom in on the screen entirely, but I could see how it would get annoying to some.

In the Safari browser there's an option to increase font size, as well as the "command+ or command-" to zoom in and out.  I just up the font size for this page and keep it tucked away in a neat little tab.

If you click on tools in the toolbar, there is a "Start Private Browsing" option.

If you click on that, then any searches or web pages you engage will not be "remembered". Recent searches or pages visited will not be logged.

That way, nobody can backtrack where you've been.

One setback is that if you open too many windows while in private browsing, it tends to kick you out.

I like the new site, only

Submitted by bigtimer on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 9:56pm.

I like the new site, only thing I would like to see different is the page length with recent blog posts...at least 10 would be a start...and spell check without having to change from ric to plain text.

As far as anyone needing to find out if somebody commented to what they posted, maybe a box for the user to check for notification would be a good thing, I see that many places, I rarely use it because it can fill up your email fast, and be never-ending, but for die hards it may be something that will satisfy their needs.

Just  a few suggestions..I know I'm in the minority here, or maybe the only one, but I like the gray instead of black for text.

Anyway...I'm off to see the Wizard...be back later.

First, posts are consecutively numbered down the page even if they are branched deep off the initial post regardless of time/date stamp.  Referring to a numbered post is worthless since a nested later posted post advances the numeration of all subsequent posts on the page, ie geographically and not chronologically.

Second, posts on subsequent pages (such as this one on Page 2 of this thread) begin numbering again at #1.  But since the numbering may change with any post thereafter, this is not much of an issue.

You are trying to accomplish a great deal with only one gigantic reboot.  Gutsy move.  Congratulations and best wishes!

Grandpaws Are Usually Right

When I was a young whipper-snappper my grandpaw used to tell me....."Son, if something's not broken - don't try to fix it".  Boy has those words really helped me in life.  Part of the human condition is that we like to tweak and play with things that work just fine with the hope of "making it better".  Sounds familiar? Like, hope and change.  Personally, I don't like the new site and IMHO NB should admit their mistake and revert back to the old site even at the cost of losing money and/or face.  Lot's of mistakes have been made over the past two years and even though NB's is minor compared to what's going on in Washington they should be man or woman enough to admit it and put their egos to the side.

An alternate approach

  • Put together the new system on either another machine or sharing the space on the machine(s) that run the current site.
  • Copy the content from the current site and get all the details / kinks ironed out running the new site "offline"
  • Copy the content again and switch to the new site with your old / current content.

If you do this,  you can avoid many of the speed bumps you are experiencing.

Direct link

Submitted by ampul man on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 6:06am.

I sorely miss the ability to go directly from the 'headline' (skipping the 'read more'), directly to the questions.

Before the upgrade, the headline was more of a tease; the read more just that.

Now, the headline seems to be repeated in the read more section.  Where I had seen the report in its entirety, the night before, or watched the video, or really just wanted to skip the printed version, I could go directly to the questions.

Now, regardless, I have to wade through (sometimes) long columns of prose (what I had just seen) to get to the questions.

Sometimes, the headline is sufficient information.

Is it just me?

Submitted by Model850 on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 11:18am.

OK, one thing (among many) I do not like about the new format is that comments span multiple pages. When I go to read NEW comments in a thread, if the comments cross page boundaries, when I click to go to the next page the site refreshes the information in my browser.

Oops. This has the effect of "marking" all the comments in the thread as read and erases the NEW tags. I can't tell what comments are new once I leave page one!

Or does this just happen to me?

Submitted by stratman on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 5:03pm.

I've commented before about users having the ability to choose "Classic NB" over "New NB".

An example would be IMDB.com which allows users to switch back to the old format if desired.  It's a little bit cryptic and not much publicized, but it shows thoughtful flexibility and customer appreciation.

If "New" NB doesn't incorporate Spellcheck and speed increases then I see little user advantage over "Classic" NB.

Submitted by FAQs on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 9:24pm.

I don't think you really need three columns.  You could have a separate page for just links to other blogs and facebook and twitter or whatever.  And have another separate page for the list of writers and editors.  Have links to those two pages on the top of the main page, remove a column, and widen the space given for blog articles.

Change among conseratives

Submitted by needle on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 10:38pm.

Being pretty conservative (like many others here), I taking all this radical change really hard.

In particular, I miss the collection of links (that was in the far right column of the former NewsBusters’s site) to recent news stories, at other sites, on matters pertaining to Media bias.  I also miss the pithy tag lines, which evidently are now eliminated.

OK, where's my pacifier?

PS: And I just discovered another "change."  In the former NewsBusters’s site if one pressed the "Enter" key while in the subject line it had the effect of hitting the "Preview" button, a feature I really liked and used all of the time.  Now it has the effect of hitting the "Publish" (or "Save") button.  I really hope you eventually implement the old feature.

- Looking forward to the self-annihilation of the Manipulated Stories Machine.

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 10/23/2010 - 1:35am.

I'm basically a simpleton, so my main gripe is keeping track of the new posts on any given thread, and knowing how many are there, without having to go looking for them, because sometimes these 'conversations' get a little animated, and it makes it easy to know who is saying what and where and when.

Other than that..........I can't make too many comments about the new format. I don't really like it, because I didn't see anything wrong with the old one, but I understand why people feel like they have to 'change' things, even if it's not neccessary........

On another note, I've noticed that - even with the new format - the same old psychopaths are still going off the deep end about the usual inane and ludicrous subject matter......it makes me think that some of these people have too much time on their hands.............

One concern I have is that the new posts are not always on the front page. One has to go looking. They can be on the front page or in the NB Extra or just blogs. Not sure if it has been like this from the start that not all post made it to the front page but I did not notice as there was many on the front to think about. Now it has been the same ones for 3 days. If NB does not update with 5 new post a day One may have to change the order away from a home page to a second tier read. And that will not just be me.

Matthew: Four points on the

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 11/01/2010 - 8:44pm.

Matthew:

Four points on the website.

1)  When in the "blog" section and wanting to read a thread, clicking on the title link to open it in a new page, the new page oftentimes goes to the last comment , or Post New Comment section, bypasing the top of the article/post/thread.  Having to continuously scroll back up to the top of the article is a pain.  This happens in both FireFox and IE6.  I use Windows XP SP3.

2)  When clicking on "New Comments" on the "Blog" page for an article/thread, if there is more than 1 page of comments, any "New" alerts next to the post title are missing for actual new, never read posts by members on subsequent pages.  If the new messages are only on the second or subsequent page(s), the software only goes to the bottom of the first page, since there are no new posts on the first page, and all the "New" markers are lost on the subsequent page(s).   This happened with the old software as well, and is a lazy coding flaw that neuters the reason to have the function in the first place.

3)  The pages load slow and scrolling is choppy/laggy.  There is just too much "stuff" loading on a page, or, very inefficient writing/handling of the data by the software which places a tremendous burden on the users end.

4)  The golden oldie:  funky page/text justifications and margins.  That out of the way... Using the new "copy and paste" function is a clunker.  Worse yet, one must be more careful than any other windows application I've used where the cursor is when you paste in copied text or else you will potentially wipe out text/characters on that line.  Example would be go to beginning of new line, click on "bullet" to format for indented text, then try to paste in text where the cursor by default is positioned and the bullet indent will be overwritten.

Interestingly, I have been able to get text indented by using the bullet function with the end result not showing the bullet character.

On the plus side, I see Spellcheck is active when copy-and-pasting text into a post.  Downside is spellcheck does not seem to function in the body of a post, which I consider a more valuable place for it to function.  This is a serious functional bassakwards flaw.

On the bright side, thank you for getting the tracking feature running again!  This was missed and much appreciated to have again.  Regaining this function alone gives me hope that the NB software may fix other issues.

An addendum to #1. Even

An addendum to #1.

Even more irritating is when tracking NEW posts that the link opens up to the bottom of the page, necessitating scrolling up to find the first NEW post.  A horrible bug in the new software.

It also does that

when you click on "read more." It sets you up to comment when you haven't even finished reading the article yet, much less other comments.

It's getting harder and harder to come to this site everyday, it's the only one of my "regulars" that has become just plain annoying.

Yea, strat, NB-2 a scroll zone.

What I try to do is remember the number of the post then, move the arrow to the right and use the scroll bar and drag it to the numbered post, less work than spinning the scroll wheel.....'bout time for a powered scroll wheel.

You Didn't Build That.

clicking on the wheel and using the arrow is the closest I've seen to a powered roller - I'm just happy there is wireless.

Looks like it's been deleted, too bad it wasn't done before it was on every blog. I use the "Track" function a lot and came here to find "1 new comment" listed for about 20 of the blogs I had visited previously.

I don't suppose there's any way to prevent mass posting, is there?

BTW, is the "Subject" line really necessary when a person is replying to someone else?
