Time magazine has terminated its relationships with its two conservative columnists, Charles Krauthammer and William Kristol. The New York Observer has the details:
The exact reasons for the departures of Mr. Krauthammer and Mr. Kristol, both high-profile backers of the Iraq war, are not entirely clear.
“I was very happy to work with them,” said Mr. Krauthammer on the phone from his Washington office. “And I have a lot of things that occupy me.”
Asked if he would have preferred to stay with the magazine, Mr. Krauthammer, a Pulitzer Prize winner who writes a regular column for The Washington Post, suggested there wasn’t much of a choice. “It’s a hypothetical that didn’t arise,” he said.
The Time spokeswoman would not detail the reasons for ending the contract of Mr. Kristol, the editor of The Weekly Standard, but said that the decision was mutual. Mr. Kristol did not return a call for comment. [...]
According to two sources familiar with the discussions, Time is in negotiations with National Review editor Ramesh Ponnuru to sign him to a contributor contract. Mr. Ponnuru, who in 2006 published The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life, has written twice for the magazine over the past month.

Krauthammer has been very vocal about how good the Iraq War is going.

December 19, 2007 - 16:26 ET by Lame CherryAh I would think Time should be treading a wee bit light in firing two people on ideology.............who just happen to be everything except a woman from Mexico in a minority points hiring.
Krauthammer as I recall is both a minority and handicapped.......which in firing him is like kicking an orphan kitty and having Katie Couric filming it.
Bill K is a minority too, so Time in one swoop slapped minorities and handicapped people for a violation of Federal Law.
ACLU are you going to be filing a lawsuit for discrimination based upon race and handicapped condition?

December 20, 2007 - 00:58 ET by KarmaPlease explain, Jer, how seriously this remark was distorted, misconstrued and taken out of context.
"We are going to take things away from you..."
December 20, 2007 - 01:28 ET by AndanteJer, respectfully, in an attempt to maintain credibility I've been very careful when quoting anyone. Please see:
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2006-35,GGLJ:en&q=%22We+are+going+to+take+things+away+from+you+on+behalf+of+the+common+good%2e%22
Media Matters did attempt to explain her comment by saying that immediately after she made her comment she said this:
"...immediately after Clinton stated that it was "time to reject the idea of an on-your-own society and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity,"...
If that's supposed to prove that Hillary isn't a socialist they blew it.
"We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."... Karl Marx? Nope, it was Hillary Clinton.
WOW Andante !!!
December 20, 2007 - 01:48 ET by MrShyThis is wild, but I went to your google link and then went to that same Media Matters link!
I also went through it with a fine-toothed comb (well, as fine as one can be at 1:30 am EST) and yeah, MM was doing everything to convince us that this line doesn't mean what it means, in some broader context of her speech. But every paragraph was just more rambling and copying-pasting from the full transcript, and it all shook out to the same thing: THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT SHE MEANT.
I also spotted this (did you, too?):
In fact, according to a July 2, 2004,
correction to a June 29, 2004, AP report, Clinton said that "cut[ting]
short" the tax cuts was probably necessary "for America to get back
on track and be fiscally responsible," implying that the tax cut
reductions would be necessary to reduce the federal deficit. According to the
AP, Clinton
said:
Huh??? So now they're telling us there was this mysterious sentence and a half that was left out, and later inserted? Even if this were true, doesn't matter. It's redistribution, plain and simple.
Brother. She said it, Jer, and it's the same no matter how you slice it or how many words you rewind or fast-forward in the speech.

The reason for my earlier comment was that I had seen a reference to either this or a very similar quote some time ago and when I researched the actual statement, it had clearly been taken out of context.
Maybe this is a different one. If so, and my criticism was inappropriate, I will apologize and also permit you to verbally flog me in whatever manner you choose.

Okay, Andante...I'm back
December 20, 2007 - 03:10 ET by JerOkay, Andante...I'm back with my response:
Even though your quote fails to impart the full context of Hillary's remarks, and provokes exaggerated inferences of socialistic fervor, it is nevertheless sufficiently accurate in wording and intent that you are certainly entitled to retain the tagline without any further objection from me. Consequently, I do apologize and eagerly await my flogging.
I also reccommend you (and others) go to the snopes site linked below to read a good analysis of this quote and others attributed to Hillary in the form of a quiz which was making the rounds several months ago. In fact, it was at NewsBusters where I first saw it, and did my own research of the quotes. I believe I was thinking of a similar one [which proved to be extremely misleading] when I saw your tagline. I was mistaken.

The Quote
December 20, 2007 - 09:17 ET by AndanteJer,
You are most kind. Thanks for keeping me on my toes. There will be no flogging today :-)
Your "Snopes" link was interesting. The paragraph supposedly explaining the IN-context meaning of what she said still sounds like she wants to take from the rich and give to those whose votes she needs...uh...sorry...typo, I meant 'give to those who need it more'.
Mr. Shy, thanks for the research. I agree with you assessment that ..."It's redistribution, plain and simple..."
"We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."... Karl Marx? Nope, it was Hillary Clinton.
Thanks, Andante, for taking
December 22, 2007 - 16:25 ET by JerThanks, Andante, for taking it easy on me. Sorry to belabor the point, but I think I've discovered how and why I drifted off base regarding your tagline.
The "quiz" referred to was posted on a NewsBusters open thread Oct. 11. The first entry was your tagline--word for word. However, the provided link proved to be erroneous, while the most closely related entry seemed to be a combination of #3 and #4 [which proved to be creatively edited, out-of-context remarks by Hillary]. I concluded the first item may have been a conflation of those two statements, which eventually resulted in my [unwarranted] criticism of your tagline. So, one moral of the story for me is, "when in doubt...Google".
Finally, even though the statement you adopted is probably the most authentic of those contained in the "Hillary the Marxist" quiz, it is apparent even there she is referring solely to "tax cuts for the wealthy" as the "thing" which will be "taken" [that is, rescinded for the common good...and addressed specifically to well-heeled backers at a private fund raiser.]
Still, it was a politically clumsy, ill-advised remark which made ideal fodder for Republicans and an astute NewsBuster's tagline.
Jer

December 19, 2007 - 19:07 ET by deerjerkydaveI'm a big fan of Charles Krauthammer and Bill Kristol.
