Time's Two Conservative Columnists Shown the Door

Photo of Matthew Sheffield.

Time magazine has terminated its relationships with its two conservative columnists, Charles Krauthammer and William Kristol. The New York Observer has the details:

The exact reasons for the departures of Mr. Krauthammer and Mr. Kristol, both high-profile backers of the Iraq war, are not entirely clear.

“I was very happy to work with them,” said Mr. Krauthammer on the phone from his Washington office. “And I have a lot of things that occupy me.”

Asked if he would have preferred to stay with the magazine, Mr. Krauthammer, a Pulitzer Prize winner who writes a regular column for The Washington Post, suggested there wasn’t much of a choice. “It’s a hypothetical that didn’t arise,” he said.

The Time spokeswoman would not detail the reasons for ending the contract of Mr. Kristol, the editor of The Weekly Standard, but said that the decision was mutual. Mr. Kristol did not return a call for comment. [...]

According to two sources familiar with the discussions, Time is in negotiations with National Review editor Ramesh Ponnuru to sign him to a contributor contract. Mr. Ponnuru, who in 2006 published The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life, has written twice for the magazine over the past month.

Time probably could not afford the Talent

If your Circulation is deteriorating, and layoffs are on the horizon, MSM is not going to Sacrifice their "own", the Opposing view goes first.

Krauthammer does very nicely on Fox....Daily....maybe Time was tired of paying him to tell them they were wrong on Issues, and then watching him broadcast the truth on TV.

Krauthammer has been very vocal about how good the Iraq War is going.

Ah well

Maybe Mr. Krauthammer will have more time to spend with the WaPo and Fox.  I have a shortcut to his column on the WaPo website, and I truly enjoy reading him.  His live work with Fox and Britt Hume is awesome too.

Whoa Time Wow Time and do I hear the ACLU filing a lawsuit Time

Ah I would think Time should be treading a wee bit light in firing two people on ideology.............who just happen to be everything except a woman from Mexico in a minority points hiring.

Krauthammer as I recall is both a minority and handicapped.......which in firing him is like kicking an orphan kitty and having Katie Couric filming it.

Bill K is a minority too, so Time in one swoop slapped minorities and handicapped people for a violation of Federal Law.

ACLU are you going to be filing a lawsuit for discrimination based upon race and handicapped condition?

Even on television, when they actually speak, Krauthammer and Kristol are unusually soft spoken for commentators - I have never heard either one raise their voice or get into a heated argument with anyone. It makes one wonder if Leon even knows who these two really are. Thinking they're wrong is one thing. Calling them "loud" calls into question his whole opinion.

Who's Al Borman?

I found a reference to that name about a grocery store chain in Michigan that went belly up.  I even saw one with a PO Box in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

Are you talking about Al Borland, the trusty side kick of Tim "The Toolman" Taylor?  Now that guy was an easy clothes shopper.

Maxwell Klinger was a great character.  He's got a signed hot dog bun on the wall at Tony Packo's.  (That's some good eating!  Don't miss the pickles and peppers.)

If you knew anything about either of these uniquely reserved and brilliant gentlemen you'd have kept your ignorant comment to yourself.

"We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."... Karl Marx? Nope, it was Hillary Clinton.

Andante...your description

Andante...your description of Kristol and Krauthammer is absolutely correct.

I'm afraid the same can't be said for your tagline Hillary quote.  Unless you can demonstrate otherwise, I believe you have misconstrued, ignored context and seriously distorted the meaning of her actual remarks.

Jer

Please explain, Jer, how

Please explain, Jer, how seriously this remark was distorted, misconstrued and taken out of context.

"We are going to take things away from you..."

Jer, respectfully, in an attempt to maintain credibility I've been very careful when quoting anyone. Please see:

   http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2006-35,GGLJ:en&q=%22We+are+going+to+take+things+away+from+you+on+behalf+of+the+common+good%2e%22

Media Matters did attempt to explain her comment by saying that immediately after she made her comment she said this:

"...immediately after Clinton stated that it was "time to reject the idea of an on-your-own society and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity,"...

If that's supposed to prove that Hillary isn't a socialist they blew it.

"We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."... Karl Marx? Nope, it was Hillary Clinton.

WOW Andante !!!

This is wild, but I went to your google link and then went to that same Media Matters link!

I also went through it with a fine-toothed comb (well, as fine as one can be at 1:30 am EST) and yeah, MM was doing everything to convince us that this line doesn't mean what it means, in some broader context of her speech. But every paragraph was just more rambling and copying-pasting from the full transcript, and it all shook out to the same thing: THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT SHE MEANT.

I also spotted this (did you, too?):

CLINTON:
We're not coming to you, many of whom are well enough off that actually
the tax cuts may have helped you ... we're probably going to cut that short and
not give it to you. We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the
common good.

In fact, according to a July 2, 2004,
correction to a June 29, 2004, AP report, Clinton said that "cut[ting]
short" the tax cuts was probably necessary "for America to get back
on track and be fiscally responsible," implying that the tax cut
reductions would be necessary to reduce the federal deficit. According to the
AP, Clinton
said:

CLINTON: We're not coming to you, many of whom are well
enough off that actually the tax cuts may have helped you, and say "we're going to give you more." We're saying,
"You know what, for America
to get back on track and be fiscally responsible,
we're probably going to cut that short and not
give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the
common good."

Huh??? So now they're telling us there was this mysterious sentence and a half that was left out, and later inserted? Even if this were true, doesn't matter. It's redistribution, plain and simple.

Brother. She said it, Jer, and it's the same no matter how you slice it or how many words you rewind or fast-forward in the speech.

Andante...Thanks for the

Andante...Thanks for the links.  Let me take a look at them and I'll then respond.  The reason for my earlier comment was that I had seen a reference to either this or a very similar quote some time ago and when I researched the actual statement, it had clearly been taken out of context.

Maybe this is a different one.  If so, and my criticism was inappropriate, I will apologize and also permit you to verbally flog me in whatever manner you choose.

Jer

Okay, Andante...I'm back

Okay, Andante...I'm back with my response:

Even though your quote fails to impart the full context of Hillary's remarks, and provokes exaggerated inferences of socialistic fervor, it is nevertheless sufficiently accurate in wording and intent that you are certainly entitled to retain the tagline without any further objection from me.   Consequently, I do apologize and eagerly await my flogging.

I also reccommend you (and others) go to the snopes site linked below to read a good analysis of this quote and others attributed to Hillary in the form of a quiz which was making the rounds several months ago.  In fact, it was at NewsBusters where I first saw it, and did my own research of the quotes.  I believe I was thinking of a similar one [which proved to be extremely misleading] when I saw your tagline.  I was mistaken.

Jer

The Quote

Jer,

You are most kind. Thanks for keeping me on my toes. There will  be no flogging today :-)

Your "Snopes" link was interesting. The paragraph supposedly explaining the IN-context meaning of what she said still sounds like she wants to take from the rich and give to those whose votes she needs...uh...sorry...typo, I meant 'give to those who need it more'.

Mr. Shy, thanks for the research.  I agree with you assessment that ..."It's redistribution, plain and simple..."

"We are going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."... Karl Marx? Nope, it was Hillary Clinton.

Thanks, Andante, for taking

Thanks, Andante, for taking it easy on me.  Sorry to belabor the point, but I think I've discovered how and why I drifted off base regarding your tagline.

The "quiz" referred to was posted on a NewsBusters open thread Oct. 11.  The first entry was your tagline--word for word.  However, the provided link proved to be erroneous, while the most closely related entry seemed to be a combination of #3 and #4 [which proved to be creatively edited, out-of-context remarks by Hillary].  I concluded the first item may have been a conflation of those two statements, which eventually resulted in my [unwarranted] criticism of your tagline.  So, one moral of the story for me is, "when in doubt...Google".

Finally, even though the statement you adopted is probably the most authentic of those contained in the "Hillary the Marxist" quiz, it is apparent even there she is referring solely to "tax cuts for the wealthy" as the "thing" which will be "taken" [that is, rescinded for the common good...and addressed specifically to well-heeled backers at a private fund raiser.]

Still, it was a politically clumsy, ill-advised remark which made ideal fodder for Republicans and an astute NewsBuster's tagline.

Jer

Charles Krauthammer and William Kristol Rock!

I'm a big fan of Charles Krauthammer and Bill Kristol.  Having Time magazine fire these guys would be like ABC news firing John Stossel and George Will, the only conservative voices on their network (NBC and CBS have no conservative voices at all which is why I am still willing to watch ABC when I have to).

Charles and Bill see politics as they are in a real world setting which is why I value their opinions.

Time does not deserve their

Time does not deserve their talents, it is wasted in their mag, because Conservatives don't read it and liberals cant understand it, like the be-little one above.

I generally watch Fox News Sunday instead of Russert, but when I have occasionally caught the roundtable segment of Meet The Press, there have been conservatives present such as Mary Matalin, William Safire and others.  Also MSNBC of course has Tucker Carlson and Joe Scarborough, each a host of his own show, and frequent contributors like Pat Buchanan...all conservatives.

Jer

Jer, a liberals'

Jer, a liberals' "conservative", is just that; only a conservative in the mind of a liberal. I would catagorize them as "just barely to the right of the middle". To each his own.

Maybe so, Karma, but I know

Maybe so, Karma, but I know each of these individuals considers himself or herself to be a solid conservative.  I heard Joe Scarborough just a couple of months ago describe himself as someone who, ideologically, completely identifies with his hero, Ronald Reagan.

Now, they may be mainstream conservatives, but "just barely to the right of the middle"? ...well, we disagree.

Ramesh Ponnuru always seems

Ramesh Ponnuru always seems eager to help give Media Center Leftists legitimacy by serving as their Token Conservative.  He also writes a blog for the Washington Post.  And he is a fan of John McCain's candidacy.

If he really needs this gig to help support his family though, at least he is not working for the New York Times(although he did write an op-ed for them saying it would be better for the GOP to lose control of the House of Representatives in 2006).

That's a coincidence. In at least one of her flip-flop focus-grouped incarnations, Mrs Clinton was also a high-profile backer of the Iraq war.

They will and are being defeated in the long run...I just can't wait for the screaming to begin after the elections and watch what they decide to do afterwards...pretty soon money is going to come to be the deciding force before an agenda you would think, or they will go broke and be hopefully doomed...as in gone, ended.

I did say hopefully....lol.

Kinda makes you wonder what

Kinda makes you wonder what the Dems, Clinton in particular have promised these publications. Some of them have to be very close to operating in the red, if they are not already. Also I think some of their positive articals on Dems compaired to the negitive articals towared Repubs should be considered campain contributions.
