A Global Warming Cover Up?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body pushing for laws that would limit man-made carbon emissions through a series of ultra-draconian regulations aimed primarily at developed nations, has a dirty little secret: its scientists have fudged their data to make the global warming picture look worse than it actually is. Speaking of Football Players
August 16, 2007 - 09:54 ET by BruzillaI dissed one of the Pittsburgh Steelers yesterday as being uncaring about the fans, then I get this email from one of our local Steelers club members who went to training camp for her vacation. I guess there is hope...
For those of you who have been to the camp you know that many of the players spend time signing autographs after practice is over....it is a mad house and you need to give all of them credit for taking the time, particularly in these hot and muggy conditions after a pretty strenuous practice session....
Well Ben, Willie, Troy, Jeff, Ike, etc. did their thing and spent almost a half an hour signing autographs....but when Ben finally got to the door of the locker room building there was a little girl (I'm going to guess she was 9-10) in a wheelchair...and I am guessing by her actions, she suffers from cerebral palsy... and we have all seen how those with this terrible disorder react when they get excited and they just make your heart feel warm because you want to join them in their joy...well when this little girl saw Ben she absolutely glowed. Ben immediately saw her and went right to her...gave her a big hug, talked with her for awhile, let the child’s mother take pictures...I mean it was such a wonderful sight I actually got tears in my eyes ... which I rarely do.
but that is not the end of the story....after Ben went into the building the little girl was still bubbling and the folks around her (family I believe) were sharing her moment with her thinking it was all over ....then, out of nowhere we see Ben reappear and the crowd starts going nuts .... he comes out with Polamalu holding a brand new NFL football, found the girl and they both sat down on the concrete next to the girl and started talking with her...I think they were asking her name and what she liked, etc....from what I could hear. Ben then took the ball and began writing a message on it gave it to Troy, he wrote something on it and when they were finished Ben presented her with the ball, gave her a great big hug and kiss and returned to the locker room...ladies and gentlemen I'm not afraid to say I was crying pretty good at this point and so was everyone around me.....now that is what being a STEELER is all about!!!!...Ben did something this little girl will remember forever and for a brief time, I know she forgot about her illness and just loved the moment...and so did I...its something that I'll never forget.

August 16, 2007 - 11:06 ET by Roger the ShrubberAwesome story, Bru.
I had a cool conversation with the new punter, Sepulveda, a few weeks ago. He was just so geeked out to be in the NFL, and was very flattered that all these people wanted his autograph. He told me it was humbling.
Then Santonio Holmes came by and mumbled something mush-mouthy, in Plaxico fashion, as he signed me an autograph... haha
Curt Schilling
August 16, 2007 - 13:53 ET by Hero SquadThat is really cool, to see some guys that get it.
A few years ago, I went to a Phillies autograph party to benefit ALS, and won tickets in a silent auction for four to a game with a pre-game photo on the field with the Philly phanatic. I didn't get the tickets for myself, but for a family in our town (I was the editor of the hometown newspaper at the time) whose daughter had recently passed away from ALS. They took their son and a friend to the game, and when they arrived, told the a Phillies rep why they were there.
The Phillies were playing the Diamondbacks at the time, when Curt Schilling was on the team. Curt has always been very active in ALS matters, and when the Phillies rep told him the story, he came out into the stands, sat and talked to them for about 15 minutes, took photos, signed autographs, and took a genuine interest in them as people who were recovering from a very difficult experience.
He wasn't pitching that day, but no one was forcing Schilling to come out, nor would he have been criticized in any way had he just stayed in the locker room. And he didn't do it for publicity, either. It was just the right thing to do, he knew he could make a small difference, and he did it.
I have the utmost respect for Schilling. We need more like him.

Fred Thompson is the MSM's Republican candidate.
August 16, 2007 - 10:08 ET by CTFred Thompson is the MSM's Republican candidate, much the same as was McCain. Thompson has the illusion of a conservative, but may only be a spoiler in a rather large empty suit. What does Fred Thompson really bring to the party???
"Thompson is the MSM Republican candidate"
August 16, 2007 - 10:16 ET by RJHuh? Have you been out of the country?
As has been discussed here on many occasions, the MSM has been attacking Thompson at every opportunity.
The MSM hits on Thompson negligible to date.
August 16, 2007 - 11:35 ET by CTThe MSM "attacks" on Fred Thompson have been minimal knee-jerk reactions so far, wait until he is the candidate vs. their beloved Hillary. What serious Republicans need to ask themselves is what is more important, image or substance. IMHO the MSM see Fred Thompson as an easy target and they are keeping their powder dry for now.
Interesting conclusion, CT
August 16, 2007 - 11:48 ET by RJBecause you think the attacks on Thompson are "minimal knee-jerk reactions", you conclude the MSM is treating Thompson like this election's "McCain"....
Thompson is not a candidate yet.
August 16, 2007 - 12:37 ET by CTThompson is not an official candidate yet, let alone the Republican nominee vs. Hillary. August 16, 2007 - 12:43 ET by CT"...I would rather have a president who is presidential and will do the job he's elected to do..." -- Fine, but what does that mean in Thompson's case?

Our campaign system has
August 16, 2007 - 12:51 ET by Conservative VoiceOur campaign system has evolved to test the candidate to what Americans
expect from their Presidents. We want to see how they handle pressure, how they
organize themselves, how they "spin", and how honest you are. I want the
campaign to be hard. Because there is more to being a President than being able
to write blogs...you have to think on your feet, you have to filter a lot of
information and make tough decisions...and be willing to live with that
decision, knowing full well it will be judged with more scrutiny than any Super
Bowl play. You have to be able to inspire and lead ( which is why most of the
time Senators don't get the job...they are by design micromanagers not
micromanagers )
So I am not sure how the campaign isn't showing how you will be
Presidential.
And as far as Fred is concerned...I like his blogs, but I really would like
to see how he behaves when under the immense stress that candidates are in.
Which is why Obama is showing how he can't be President...he wins the beauty
pageant but his ideas on foreign policy is naive. I agree with CT, I fear there is more
hype than substance with Fred.

Excellent question!!! I
August 16, 2007 - 13:20 ET by BruzillaExcellent question!!! I wish more people would ask it. What does Fred bring to the table that others don't... here's my take:
1. Political courage. How many Republican candidates came out publicly and said that Scooter Libby should be pardoned immediately? One, Fred.
2. Guns: Fred has always been pro-gun, unlike Rudi who says he's for NY-style gun laws (which tells me he'll approve any bill that bans guns in cities with a population of more than say seven million people... then it'll be five million, then three million...) or Mitt who's always been cool to gun owners, but then loudly proclaims his lifetime membership in the NRA (where he only enrolled about 14 months ago... about the time he decided to run).
3. Consistency. Fred has voted against bills that were very popular because they intruded on state's rights. You can't be for state's rights sometimes, and against them when a popular vote comes up, which is how most of the candidates are.
4. Roe V. Wade: How many candidates have been willing to say, in public forums, that Roe V. Wade is "bad law" and should be overturned? One, Fred. The rest of them all talk around the abortion issue and RVW, while Fred speaks the truth and says it's bad law and the states should be allowed to decide if abortion is legal or not.
5. Dealing with our Enemies: All but one Rep, candidate is for staying in Iraq, so it doesn't take much moxie to take that stand, but how many have come out and said they're willing to attack Iran? One, Fred.
6. Confidence and Leadership: Who's resisting all the pundits and talking heads, and doing what he feels is right IRT his campaign? Fred. Mitt, that business mastermind, blew millions of bucks just to win a meaningless strawpoll in Iowa. That's just the kind of judgement we need more of in Washington!
If you look at all Fred's positions today, you'll find they are the same positions he had ten years ago, or 20 years ago, and those positions are all right along conservative lines. He's not a Rudi/McCain RINO, and he's not a Romney flip-flopper, so he's getting my vote.
those are all reasons why I
August 16, 2007 - 13:35 ET by Conservative Voicethose are all reasons why I like Fred too, but some of his actions ( which carry more weight ) make me pause. Saying the right thing is great and all, but doesn't mean anything if there isn't any bite with the bark.
Romney may have spent millions, but I don't see it as a meaningless strawpoll. It does three things. Build momentum and buzz. It helps him see where he could improve on organization. And it shows he can organize and convince people to vote for him. Rudy and McCain didn't want to do it because they didn't want to take the chance of Romney beating them, or coming close second.
I haven't discounted Fred yet, nor am I a Romney guy yet...its too early still.
I'm with Fred
August 16, 2007 - 14:03 ET by Hero SquadFor the reasons you mentioned above, I have firmly entrenched myself in the Thompson camp, "I'm With Fred" bumper sticker planted firmly on my vehicle.
I agree down the line on his stance on the issues, I think he carries himself in a presidential manner, he has shown by holding back from declaring his candidacy that he has the patience to do what he believes is the right course of action... and I don't think it matters if he was a TV actor, movie actor, or both (as he was).
I would support Giuliani, Romney or Huckabee, should they get the nod. I don't think the others really have a legitimate shot. But I can't support a guy like Ron Paul -- or any opponents to our war on terror. I think I would (gulp!) actually vote for Hillary over Ron Paul. Thank God it'll never come to that.

August 16, 2007 - 14:11 ET by sarcasmoAnd I've heard the same thing regarding voting for Hillary over Rudy, from Ron Paul fans. People should think for themselves this time, and examine all the issues of all the candidates. I don't think it's a good idea to lie about what Ron Paul said or what he thinks, and apparently neither does that raving liberal Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in Media. ;}
I'm firmly with Ron Paul because this time I don't want promises of smaller government, I want actual smaller government, and fiscal conservatives like me have been lied-to enough, to be brutally-frank. Still, I encourage fans of any of the non-RINOs to get excited NOW, or you're gonna get a northeastern RINO and more big government.

August 16, 2007 - 14:25 ET by Hero SquadDon't get me wrong, I admire Ron Paul for saying clearly what he believes and sticking to it, caution thrown to the wind. And yes, there are certainly many issues on which I agree with him.
But his take on the war is a big area of disagreement for me. I think the war was the right thing to do, the right place, the right motive, and can be successfully concluded so long as the person who takes office after Bush has the wherewithall to finish the job.
I'm aware that "Iraq" isn't terror. But there are terrorists in Iraq. We are fighting for Iraq.
And no, I wasn't trying to imply that he thinks 9/11 is an inside job. I don't think he's nuts. I just disagree with him on a very important issue, and find Thompson to be a candidate with whom I have yet to find a disagreement.

A Six Point Reply
August 16, 2007 - 15:46 ET by CT1. Political courage; How does supporting a pardon for Scooter Libby become a conservative position? IMO Scooter got a raw deal, but I donot see it as a conservative issue.
2. Guns; I have been a member and support the NRA, but I donot own a gun nor do I hunt. That does not mean I have any less support for the Second Ammendment.
3. Consistency; “States’ Rights” I seem to remember two big advocates of “States’ Rights”, they were George Wallace and Lester Maddox, not great American icons IMHO.
4. Roe V. Wade; RVW may well be bad law, but I donot consider it a conservative issue. Abortion appears to be a moral and religious issue that many believe should RVW be overturned that it be left up to the States to deside. I’m old enough to remember the days of back ally coathanger abortions and I donot want to see moral legislation that will inevitably bring that back.
5. Dealing with our Enemies: I’m not for staying in Iraq, I’m for WINNING in Iraq much as I believe does President Bush. Iran certainally needs to be confronted and contained, but that does not require an attack. You make Fred sound like Dr. Strangelove or Obama-Rama with Pakistan.
6. Confidence and Leadership: Fred may well be confident, about what I haven’t a clue, but he may well be confident. As to leadership the question is leadership to what or for what? What positions has Fred Thompson taken, what is his platform, his vission, what is his plan??? More importantly what are those things he wants to do that he can only do if he is President???
Somehow I doubt you will ever get the chance to vote for Fred Thompson for President.

August 16, 2007 - 10:31 ET by msh1973motherbelt,
Remember what happened in their streets when he silenced the local TV station....not sure the entire population of Venezuela agrees with Chevez. I find this current movement very scary for America.
"Not sure entire population agrees with Chavez?"
August 16, 2007 - 10:45 ET by RJNot hardly. Chavez is pitting segments of the population against each other, and he's unpopular in many areas. But because of his thugs and his new laws, many are afraid to speak up.
He already rewrote the Venezuelan constitution once in his favor. This is just fine-tuning. Like liberals see our American constitution, he sees his constitution as a "living document."

August 16, 2007 - 12:24 ET by motherbeltdidn't mean to imply that you are...it's just that your reply sounded as though you took mine seriously. I have days when I don't pick up on sarcasm...it's easy to do when you can't hear someone's tone of voice. For instance, I meant the "sarcasm detector" remark as a jest....I use the same term for myself whem I don't "get it". Sorry if I offended you.

Buffet for Obama
August 16, 2007 - 10:12 ET by motherbeltJust read this story:
Obama Can Spread Prosperity, Fairness, Buffett Says
Among the gems from Buffet:
"We have abundance but we don't have as much fairness as
we might have in the system"
After he says, "We really need to
figure out some way not to fill the golden goose but actually to
have abundance grow'' (I think it's a typo and he said kill the golden goose), he says
"Obama can ``lead us to the right place,'' he said, spreading prosperity so that it is more inclusive.
Not one word of substance on the details of how Obama would "have abundance grow" or might get us to where we have a more inclusive prosperity.
For someone who made his billions dealing in solid facts and reality,
not feelings, this is an amazing stream of platitudes from Buffett.
Wonder why.....
From Newt:
August 16, 2007 - 10:20 ET by HelenSA couple of days ago, Sean Hannity had Newt Gingrich on (I heard about it but did not actually listen to the show so forgive the hearsay aspect of this) and Newt was talking about all these hollow and sanctimonious promises or goals Obama keeps setting.
Newt basically said: "Obama is a sitting senator. He is in the position, right now, to submit bills (or whatever they do) to get his ideas on the table and do, right now, what he keeps promising to do as a president. He could do this stuff, right now, if he really cared about what he's talking about. He doesn't have to wait. If he'd stop galivanting around the country, running for President, he could do the job he was elected to do."
So maybe I editorialized a bit but the sentiment is right on the money. These damn dilettantes*.

August 16, 2007 - 11:04 ET by motherbeltThat's true, Helen, and the same goes for Clinton. She's another sitting senator. These two could get together and co-sponsor any number of bills....imagine that as a starting point for a Clinton/Obama ticket!
That being said, my main point regarding Buffet's remarks was that for a man who deals in concrete realities, he sure is full of useless platitudes when it comes to Obama. I'm sure Buffet made his billions by thinking philosophically about wealth and fairness, don't you agree? Is he willing to give up a big chunk of his wealth to in order to spread around the abundance? No one is stopping him, either.
Neither one of them will say what Obama actually would DO to "spread prosperity" and make things "more fair." Might that be because the "solution" is more redistribution of wealth, and they don't dare say that out loud? Or because they know it's just feel-good platitudes with no real meat?
You know, if they all feel so strongly about it, why aren't Clinton and Obama proposing things right now, with Buffet donating "seed money" for their ideas?

Keep your eye on the Obama...Keep your eye on the Obama...Keep your eye on the Obama...*WHAM*, stealth Hillary wins.
It would behoove the USA to forget Obama is actually in the race, because he isn't.

August 16, 2007 - 10:58 ET by Roger the ShrubberThis woman braved the dangers of traveling in a combat zone, where coalition forces and Iraqi security forces waged war against al-Qaida terrorists who used Baqubah as a stronghold...
Once again, this shrubber is confused. Hater, er, Leon has told us that Al-Qaeda has an almost inconsequential presence in Iraq. This news story must obviously be a fraud, a fabrication, or Leon is full of crap? Inconceivable!
This has to be about 5th or 6th story posted here at Newsbusters since Hater, er, Leon schooled us dumb neo-cons on the intricacies of the Iraq War, all showing Leon to, well, as usual, have his elbow firmly on the pulse of the situation.

August 16, 2007 - 10:21 ET by sarcasmoI'll bet this topic didn't come up much in Iowa, which truly is the land of ethanol-welfare-queens, if you ask me...Stossel is right, and was right to report this scandal and bring it to light.

Only living pigs are entitled to suck swill.
Any pig sucking swill from a dead pig trough will have swillsucking privileges terminated permanently
All Welfare parents must submit to random drug testing.
Drug impaired Welfare parents will have benefits terminated permanently.
OK, so I'm prejudiced against dead people. And I don't think it's fair for people to get high on my dime. Bad enough I support their kids while they self medicate.

August 16, 2007 - 11:30 ET by sarcasmoHow about my preferred absolute -- "absolutely no trough"? And on top of that, why is it that libertarian journalists (and politicians) tend to have to do what looks to me like 100% of what's supposed to be the media's job WRT scandals at the spending trough??

August 16, 2007 - 11:43 ET by Cool ArrowSo cutting off benefits to fraudulent recipients isn't a step in the right direction. Do you really think your absolute is just as likely to occur as my contingency?
Look at the time limit put on Welfare recipients under the Contract with America. It wasn't an absolute, but it was something I applauded. I didn't go off in a huff because they didn't just shut down Welfare completely.
Now, which Libertarian was it that broke the ENRON scandal? Global Crossing?
Yeah, it's all you! It's all Libertarians!

August 16, 2007 - 11:55 ET by sarcasmoI never said that, and yes (see Estonia).
I also never said it was all libertarians, but instead that it just seems that way a lot of the time (and yes, like it or not, libertarian journalists at Reason & elsewhere did warn about this kind of thing with politically-connected welfare recipients like Enron).
