CBS's Rose Lets Axelrod Forward White House Denial on National Security Leaks

Charlie Rose deferred to Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod on Monday's CBS This Morning regarding the controversy over several recent national security leaks. Axelrod repeatedly denied that the leaks came from the administration. Rose didn't challenge his guest's talking point, even though former Defense Secretary Robert Gates indicated that White House officials went "out in public with operational details" of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden during a May 2012 interview with the anchor.

Despite knowing about Gates's disclosure, Rose claimed that President Obama "seems to be upset about the spy leaks," and asked the Democratic campaign official whether the leaks came from the "national security apparatus at the White House."

David Axelrod, Obama Campaign Senior Adviser; & Charlie Rose, CBS News Anchor | NewsBusters.orgRose brought up the leak issue midway though his interview of Axelrod, which began seven minutes into the 7 am Eastern hour. After making his "upset" line about Obama, the CBS journalist asked, "Where did they come from, and who should be doing the investigating?" When his guest replied that he didn't know their origin, Rose interjected, "Was it in the White House?"

Axelrod continued in full denial mode, citing his experience as the former senior adviser to the President:

AXELROD: Absolutely not. We did not -- you know, let me just say, I sat with the President for two years. I watched him make these excruciating decisions - life and death decisions - committing Americans to dangerous missions to protect the American people. The last thing that he would want; the last thing anyone in the White House wants, is to do anything that would jeopardize those missions or jeopardize those Americans. So he's as outraged about it as anybody, and, as you well know, we've been attacked for being too hard on leaks, for going after leakers too hard. This administration has been tougher on that than anyone. So this is, you know, a bit of folderol of the election season.

The anchor let this boast go unanswered, and followed up by simply rephrasing his previous question: "But you don't think it came from the national security apparatus at the White House?" The Obama campaign aide replied, "No, absolutely not -- but, you know, we're as interested as anybody to see."

Earlier, Rose started the Axelrod interview with a softball question on the President's eyebrow-raising line on Friday that the "private sector is doing fine":

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

ROSE: So just tell us one more time on the private sector- (laughs)

AXELROD: Oh, that again, huh?

ROSE: What did the President mean to say?

AXELROD: Look, what the President meant to say was that since this -- in the last 27 months, we’ve created 4.3 million private sector jobs - not enough, but far different than the 800,000 a month we were losing when he became president-

ROSE: So why didn't he say we created more jobs, but that's not enough, rather than saying the private sector's doing fine?

AXELROD: Charlie, he called a press conference to say -- to suggest urgent actions that we should take to undergird the economy against the clouds that are rolling in from Europe. He's said repeatedly we need to do more to accelerate job creation. So I don't think there's -- in the minds of most Americans, there's no confusion about this.

Bush and Eourpe are to blame!

"not enough, but far different than the 800,000 a month we were losing when he became president."

Yea, we know, it;s Bush's fault.

"Charlie, he called a press conference to say -- to suggest urgent actions that we should take to undergird the economy against the clouds that are rolling in from Europe."

So, now it's Europe's fault?

"So I don't think there's -- in the minds of most Americans, there's no confusion about this."

Then why are you trying to explain it?

By the way, what the {expletive deleted} does "undergrid" even mean? Did you just make that word up?

I feel like slitting my throat every time Axelrod says anything. He is such an excruciatingly boring speaker.

Alexrod is not an accountable WH official

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 2:40pm.

He lies out his butt and the WH will always have deniability. Even Obama didn't deny the leaks; her merely said it was 'outrageous' to suggest hat the leaks came form his WH -- and I think we're in a agreement with that.

No wonder he's appearing on all the talk shows to deny WH involvement.

It's interesting to note that the alleged 'uncovering' of CIA employee Valerie Plame warranted an independent special counsel, but the investigation into what the Director of National Intelligence called the "worst security bust in 30 years" gets a couple of Holder-appointed DoJ hacks, one of whom donated to Obama's campaign.

Obama is not upset at the leaks

Submitted by c5then on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 2:52pm.

He is upset that they are not working and now they have a "leak-gate" crisis on their hands.

Come on!!! Even the British MI6 has said that they are re-evaluating cooperation with the US since we can't seem to keep any secrets.

Either these leaks were authorized by the President or multiple people in his inner circle are guilty of at least major felonies if not treason. Either the way the buck stops with B. Obama.

Rose - the most useful idiot at CBS.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 4:25pm.

Charlie Rose is the most useful idiot at CBS. He never questions anything, he just lets 'em ramble on and on with propaganda UNLESS he is interviewing a conservative. When it's a conservative, he raises more innuendo and double-speak than the old Rona Barrett or any other gossip talker. Way past his prime and just a few millenia younger than Andrea.

Rose, Axelrod and Obama

Submitted by NVRAT on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 4:37pm.

Boy you know it`s getting bad when the old Commie himself (Axelrod) has to come out and try to protect the Amateur Obama. Obambo has made so many gaffs in the last month that someone has got to protect him. For a team that`s suppose be going "FORWARD" they are sure back peddling a lot. And on top of everything else the Amateur Obambo not only gave Hollwierd Classified info on OBL`s killing but now has opened up Pandora`s CIA box of secrets. What a klutz.

We have got to get rid if this Clown and his little band of Commie`s (administration) in 2012/13). The one remaining question is, how is congress going to control the White House Communist Party between November and January 2013.

Submitted by celator on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 5:15pm.

I also believe that the primary source of the leaks is Axelrod.

He, of all people, attended the highest level intelligence meetings at the White House--a guy who couldn't come close to being approved for a security clearance (his mother--Myril Bennett Axelrod-- was a columnist for PM, a Stalinist/Communist magazine published in NYC back in the day). The NYT article noted a number of other administration officials, some by name, who leaked intelligence info, as well.

Axelrod has a long history of affiliation with causes supported by the CPUSA, as seen in this article.

National Security Advisor Tom Donilon was the source of the White House security leaks

So...how long until Obama retracts his outrage at our outrage for outrageously spilling the national security beans for political gain???

Note to moderate and independent voters, whenever Obama protests and claims it isn't him and how dare we point the finger at him...he is admitting his guilt. If you will remember Obama claimed he wasn't an ideologue, yet for some strange reason acts like one.
