CBS Rips GOP Candidates For Daring to Question European Socialism
CBS's Allen Pizzey completely whitewashed the struggling European economy on CBS Sunday Morning to bash the Republican presidential candidates' attack on President Obama's economic policies. Pizzey zeroed-in on Germany's lower unemployment rate and cited left-leaning Professor James Walston, who claimed that "the candidates are dealing in caricatures of Europe that are about 90% wrong."
The journalist played clips from Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, who defended the U.S. Constitution and ripped "European socialism." He condescended in reply, "If you're a candidate who wants to move to the White House, why worry about details?" Pizzey also turned to a European woman who insulted the Republican candidates' intelligence: "I just hope that most Americans are just more intelligent than those politicians" [audio clips available here; video below the jump].
The CBS correspondent featured Walston, as well as John Kornblum, former President Clinton's second ambassador to Germany, throughout his report. Kornblum clearly ripped the American economic system towards the end of the segment:
PIZZEY: There was a time when Europe's youth and aspiring middle class saw America as a shining beacon of opportunity, but it's no longer seen as the ultimate career and lifestyle improvement.
KORNBLUM: In northern Europe, they're looking at the United States and say, boy, I'm happy to be here, because unemployment is much lower; job security is higher; education is free; medical care is comprehensive. And so, they have to be fairly adventurous to believe that they would be better off in the United States than they are here right now.
Earlier in the report, Pizzey and Kornblum tag-teamed to spotlight Germany's economy versus that of the U.S.:
PIZZEY: ...Germany has a five-and-a-half percent unemployment rate, an immense export surplus, and world-leading innovative companies. And its economic system, according to former U.S. Ambassador John Kornblum, is closer to what the U.S. was in President Eisenhower's time than it is to socialism.
JOHN KORNBLUM, FORMER U.S. AMBASSADOR TO GERMANY: The governments in Europe- and especially in this country, Germany- could probably be given credit for writing half of the Republican economic policy. They believe in low taxes, saving, low government expenditures, no deficits.
The journalist buried the lede about the internal struggles of the EU's economy. Despite acknowledging that "the recession is biting here" in Europe at the beginning of the segment, Pizzey immediately added, "It's just that the Europeans seem to have a way of getting by, unless you look at them from the Republican presidential hopefuls' point of view." It took him over three minutes to even touch briefly on Europe's economic troubles, and even then, the correspondent followed it with a defense of European-style health care:
PIZZEY (voice-over): European nations have seen riots over benefit cuts, their fair share of foreclosures, and long unemployment lines. And the cradle-to-grave social welfare systems, set up more than 60 years ago, do have to be drastically trimmed to fit changing economic times, but not to the extent of removing the safety net.
WALSTON: There is a presumption that health care should be guaranteed; there should be a minimum of health care, which the government- which the community provides.
PIZZEY: And it's for everybody. Even a tourist who ends up in an ambulance here in Italy can expect full and comprehensive care, and no one will demand to see an insurance card first or send a bill when it's over.
After playing the clip of the European woman's anti-Republican smear, the CBS correspondent further condescended towards the GOP candidate: "One of the things that amuses people here is the GOP candidates' insistence on referring to Europe and European socialism, as if they were talking about a single amorphous entity- when, in fact, the European Union alone comprises 27 different countries, each with its own language, culture, and social system."
This obviously omits the fact that each of these countries has an economic system that is further to the left of the United States, and that the EU bureaucracy in Brussels intervenes in each of the constituent economies.
This isn't the first time that Pizzey rushed to the defense of European socialism. Back in 1990, shortly after the Berlin Wall fell, the journalist defended East Germany's pro-abortion social welfare policies on the June 16 edition of CBS Evening News, all the while failing to mention the oppressive nature of its communist regime: "East Germany provides what may be the world's most extensive family services system. It includes abortion on demand and free day care centers for children....Reunification threatens more than the economic security of East German women. It could also mean an end to their legal right to free, easy abortions."

Because the doctors and nurses who work in the hospitals and clinics that offer "comprehensive care" work for the government and not private companies. They are supported and paid by taxes on the population.
If one were to compare the size of European countries government's to their GDP, we would see that they have far larger governments than the US does by that measure.
And they are trying to ignore the fact that when the rich and powerful of Europe have health problems they come to the US to get the best care, not their own mediocre systems.

Take the Canadian national health care system, which is similar to those in Western Europe. When a Canadian cannot get lifesaving care in Canada because the wait is too long, they come to the US. For some non-emergencey but non-routine care, Canada contracts with US health companies.
KORNBLUM: In northern Europe, they're looking at the United States and say, boy, I'm happy to be here . . .
. . . Because they've been taught that they cannot survive without the government's social safety net.
. . . because unemployment is much lower . . .
That depends on which country you're in, and which American state you're talking about.
. . . job security is higher; . . .
And job occupational agility is tougher . . .
. . . education is free . . .
same in the US
. . . medical care is comprehensive . . .
But changing. In the UK, which has had NHS since WW2, they have had to permit the growth of commercial medical care because NHS cannot respond enough. Approximately 17% of British health care is now in the commercial sector.
. . . And so, they have to be fairly adventurous to believe that they would be better off in the United States than they are here right now. . .
So why do we naturalize more new citizens each year than any country in Europe?
All this reminds me of a NB article (I think it was last year) whey some MSMer was praising the economic growth, and access to medical care and education in of all places -- the People's Republic of China.
If one goes back to periodicals of the 1920s and early 1930s, there was tremendous admiration from the American Left for the efficiencies and fairness in Stalin's USSR, Mussolini's Italy, and even to some extent, Hitler's Germany.

...I'd happily take your health-care system over ours any time.
In Quebec, doctors (yes, DOCTORS) are actually lobbying the government for the "right to die".
You know where that slippery slope leads to.
It's too late for me now to choose, so I'm in full-blown dread of what will become of our health care system when the time comes that I'll really need it. There is a movement to privatize some aspects of our system, but it's small, and it's being met with some pretty heavy liberal resistance, which makes the movement inneffective.
I can just see it all now. By the time I get to my senior years, I'll be considered "too old" and "non-productive" for the system to afford to keep alive.
I'm really beginning to hate this country.

This should have been a Bildo Maher comedy sketch. Somehow, in this 15 minute monologue extolling that "Europe is Great, Just Ask 'Em... didn't cover a single one of the most germane measures that should have been used to make his case. This toad blathered on and on in support of his lie, and who did he "interview"?

No mention of Greece and their 20.9% unemployment rate, and 51.7% for under 25 years old...

I don't know about other non-EU citizens, but this is 100% NOT true for American tourists. The US State Dept. even highly recommends taking out a policy if your own policy is invalid overseas.

The cost of living is very high, and prohibitively so in every Scandanavian country.
The level of competitiveness is very low. Labor unions rule, and the "work week" is a marginal 35 hours, not counting the time for coffee, smoking and leering at women (think France).

Germany may be in good shape compared to the rest of Europe, but I've heard horror stories about the taxes they pay there, not to mention restrictions on liberties such as the ability of parents to homeschool their children, for instance. Plus, they don't have to pay as much for defense because WE (as in the USA) are providing the defense for them. They know that if anyone attacks them, the Americans will step in and defend them. That's been the case for more than 60 years.

Did they notice that the majority of Scandinavian countries, the Benelux group and some significant other players in Europe cut back their social services dramatically? Denmark changed its ways, as is the Netherlands and other countries. Sweden will have to acquiesce at some point or another.
I have enough European relatives (including Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Austria and Denmark) who will be happy to discuss the restructuring of European social democracies with those two dimbulbs.
I guess CBS is doing what it can to help solve unemployment among the chronically stupid--make them talking heads.

The only reason European Socialism has eked out an existence for this long is that America continues to subsidize their defense against the Bolsheviks in Moscow. Same goes for South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
We work so that peoples in other countries can enjoy Socialist benes and look down upon us in the meantime.
It's rather interesting that Obama and the other Marxists over here look like their willing to sell the Europeans down the river to the Muscovites, as well as instilling the same expensive Corporatist Ponzi schemes in the U.S. (along with a greatly reduced military/nuclear capability) that will mean less protection for them.
Clearly, the only solution is an enlightened, Leftist oligarchy to control the world. They already do behind the scenes, but the time is nearing to "drop the radical pose" and get down to the business of universal totalitarian Socialism.
