NPR Highlights 'McCarthyism' Charge Against Wisconsin GOP

By Matthew Balan | April 04, 2011 | 18:54

On Monday's Morning Edition, NPR's David Schaper slanted towards a professor and his allies in academia who object to a recent open records request into his e-mails from the Wisconsin GOP, playing five sound bites from them versus only two from a non-Republican source who thought their concerns were overblown. One of the professor's allies labeled the request a "contemporary version of McCarthyism."

Host Renee Montagne introduced Schaper's report by putting the issue in the context of the continuing debate over state employees' collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin:

MONTAGNE: The recent turmoil in Wisconsin over union rights for state employees has touched off a debate over the rights of professors at state universities. This new debate centers on a request by the Wisconsin Republican Party for e-mails from a University of Wisconsin professor. That professor had written a blog post questioning the Republican agenda. Now, the GOP wants to see e-mails he wrote that contain the words 'union,' 'recall,' and 'Scott Walker,' the name of the governor. NPR's David Schaper found the issue got a lot of attention at a gathering of political scientists this last weekend.

After noting that the open records request caused some "extra buzz" at the Midwest Political Science Association's recent conference, the correspondent continued that a "similar Freedom of Information request targeting the e-mails of professors and staff at the labor studies programs at the University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Wayne State University in Detroit...[was] filed by the Mackinac Center, a conservative public policy group." He added that "all this has some of these political scientists concerned."

Schaper's first four sound bites all reenforced the sense that the Wisconsin Republicans were on witch hunt against these professors:

PROFESSOR RANDAL JELKS, UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS: I think every academic institution's eyebrows went up, especially the public ones.

SCHAPER: Randal Jelks teaches American studies and African-American studies at the University of Kansas.

JELKS: I think that politicians are trying to intimidate academics from speaking out on issues, especially those who are in state-related institutions.

CARY NELSON, AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS: These e-mail requests, for me, were the first time I was willing to say this was a contemporary version of McCarthyism.

SCHAPER: Cary Nelson is president of the American Association of University Professors, and calls the requests an assault on academic freedom.

NELSON: There is a sense of thought control. There is a sense of intimidation. There is a sense of trying to make people fearful of exercising their speech rights.

SCHAPER: Nelson considers these broad fishing expeditions that could have a chilling effect on professors and what they write and what they say, even how they teach.

Instead of turning to a member of the GOP, or more generally, a conservative from Wisconsin, the NPR reporter played two clips from Lucy Dalglish of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, which isn't exactly a right-leaning organization:

LUCY DALGLISH, REPORTERS COMMITTEE FOR FREEDOM OF THE PRESS: I understand the argument, but I think people are engaging in a little bit of hysteria here.

SCHAPER: Lucy Dalglish is executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

DALGLISH: Professors do not have a statutory protection for academic freedom.

SCHAPER: Dalglish says that doesn't mean academic freedom isn't important, but it doesn't trump the public's right to know, and that means some e-mails of public university professors should be open to public scrutiny, regardless of the motivation behind the request.

Schaper then explained that "Wisconsin's Republican Party and Michigan's Mackinac Center say they don't need to give a reason for making their request. No one from the Wisconsin GOP would talk on tape for this story, but in a statement, executive director Mark Jefferson says taxpayers do have a right to know if public employees are conducting themselves in an ethical manner." But he didn't explain why there wasn't any sound bite from a representative of the Mackinac Center instead. Note as well that he identified the Mackinac Center as "conservative," but didn't give any political labeling for either the American Association of University Professors or the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

Near the end of his report, the correspondent recapped the accusations of the professors he featured earlier by turning to William Cronon, the University of Wisconsin, Madison professor at the center of the open records request:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

SCHAPER: The University of Wisconsin is complying with the open records request, but is holding back some e-mails because of privacy concerns. For his part, Professor Cronon says he has nothing to hide, but told Wisconsin Public Radio he is disappointed the GOP is on the attack, instead of engaging in a thoughtful discussion about what he wrote.

PROFESSOR WILLIAM CRONON, UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN: A naive part of me really kind of hoped that the Republican Party would rethink whether this kind of intrusive, very aggressive, highly partisan tactic that they've adopted is in the interest of the state. I don't think it is.

SCHAPER: Meanwhile, officials at Wayne State, Michigan State, and the University of Michigan say they're still trying to determine the appropriate response.

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 04/04/2011 - 10:13pm.

Underestimated? Well, that depends on which number you have in mind. The publicity-obsessed, self-aggrandizing, liberty-stomping drunken slob flung about all sorts of numbers of alleged commies in the State Department before picking one out of thin air and running with it.

Nobody disputes the reality of Soviet penetration of the US government during and after the 1930's. That didn't require any spectacular revelations by McCarthy. The fact remains his staggering recklessness, brutish tactics, and outrageous assaults on the patriotism of true American heroes like General George Marshall--and absurd attacks on the Eisenhower administration--left a permanent stain on a shameful period in this nation's history.

Submitted by Liberallies on Mon, 04/04/2011 - 11:48pm.

Jer,

Are you truly accusing someone else of revisinghistory? LOL you are a master at revising history, Jer

I wonder, if you are as incensed against President Clinton's use of the FBI, State Department and the DOJ to destroy the reputation and life of the women who accused of him of rape?

Only Liberals are outraged by McCarthy and then turn around and praise President Clinton as Jer has done in countless posts here on NB.

And please Jer, don’t cry about someone else's supposed revisionist history when you constantly do it. LOL

Now keep hiding from me since you know answering my questions prove you are a radical Liberal you loves to revise history. By the way, funny how you have zero problem accusing others of what you wish, but complained when I called you a liar. It never fails, when a Liberal is hit with the truth he cries about his character being attacked, but he, in this case Jer, has zero problem attacking the character of Conservatives he disagrees with.

I assume you are referring to my attacking the character of McCarthy--for which I make no apology--rather than my initiating any personal attacks against other commenters at this website since, unlike you, I don't engage in such tactics.

Clinton's personal behavior, as you should be aware if you have been paying any attention over the years, has been the target of frequent criticisms and condemnations by me. As far as any specific incidents of misuse of FBI, State Department and DOJ, you'll need to refresh my memory.

Any other alleged examples of my revisionist history are also welcomed.

Jer, LOL...you just

Submitted by Liberallies on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 10:32am.

Jer,

LOL...you just finished ignoring a post from me in another forum in which you were claiming that Bush was treated well by the media until everything went south in Iraq...oh wait, you then changed the goal to early years...oh wait you then changed the goal again to his first month when I proved your ridiculous assertions wrong. One of the many prime examples of how you constantly revise history to fit your "facts".

And it was you, Jer, who also claimed that the New York Times, Washington Post, etc. are unbiased and well researched news sources. Nothing to back it up expect of course because you said so. Isn't it amazing how it works for you Liberals. Jer, because you claim it, it is so. But like every Liberal, you demand that the other side provide the evidence which you never provide.

and by no means, now, start claiming that you do not think President Clinton to be one of the greatest Presidents in American history. LOL Next thing you'll claim is that you know Al Gore is a demagogue, a terrible Vice-President who has become wealthy beyond wealthy by using and lying to the American people.

It is amusing, Jer, to watch you debate others and use "debating" tactics against others which you claim to abhor when you feel the same are used against you.

No, Jer, you don't insult others, you just finished claiming that an above poster is a revisionist of history. But nah...Jer doesn't insult. Do you realize that when you claim that someone else revised history you are calling the person a liar, right?  Lawyer. LOL "...it depends what the meaning of the word "is" is" I guess, as your hero claimed in the late 1990s. You call other liars, but how indignant you become when you are called a liar.

It never fails, Liberals demand sources when they provide none. Liberals love to insult, but my goodness, if they feel insulted,  how dare the person who they claim insulted them.

You provided ZERO sources to prove your assertion that an above poster revised history, you know lied. You provided ZERO proof that you have attacked Clinton. You provided ZERO evidence that McCarthy's character was not that great and you turn around and ask me ot provide evidence? Jer, like I told you, your ridiculous and childish way (oh sorry, did I just insult you, like you insulted the above poster whom you called a liar) of debating may work on stupid judges and sub-par lawyers, but it has never worked on me and I will call always call you out.

Go back and read the posts, Liberallies...

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 11:39am.

You were the one who moved the goalposts. You were the one who claimed that from the minute he first walked into office the Left media was determined to destroy Bush and continued to do so for the entire eight years. I merely stated that there weren't major complaints about the media coverage for the first couple of years. I readily conceded it deteriorated badly after that. I provided sources. You provided nothing but mouthing your obvious biases.

When I proved you wrong you began squirming, dancing, equivocating, misstating my words, and generally acting in your customary fashion: Starting off by asserting one thing and then end up claiming something entirely different.

Now, once again, you react with personal attacks instead of rational debate. But that's who you are--so why should I or anyone else expect otherwise.

Jer, I moved the goal

Submitted by Liberallies on Tue, 04/05/2011 - 7:15pm.

Jer,

I moved the goal post? I started asserting one thing and then claimed something entirely different? Why the need to lie, Jer? Typical Liberal! blame others of what you do. No, I have not moved the goal post. I did not state one thing and then claim something entirely different, liar. I have stayed consistent. The media before and throughout President Bush's administration, from his first day in office until the last day, were biased against him and did everything in their power to destroy him.

YOU on the other hand first claimed that everything went south for Bush... 1) When things went sount in Iraq, then 2) Right after his early years and then...3)After his first month. I didn't provide sources? LOL, go back and re- read the exchange, I provided you with four sources, all of them clearly proving what my assertion. Additionally, one of your sources proved me right and you wrong!!! You haven’t yet been able to explain away this part of the study…”Taking the first two months in office as a whole, Bush’s coverage has been slightly less positive than his Democratic predecessor’s (22% positive stories for Bush versus 27% for Clinton) 4.”, here is another one for you that you have chosen to ignore, "While overall the coverage of Bush’s early days is actually less positive than Clinton’s, many may sense the opposite because of the power of first impressions."

You have conveniently ignored this inconvenient truth, to borrow from your immoral, lying, demagogue hero, Al Gore.

You additionally claimed that the Washington Post, the New York Times, etc are unbiased sources of news which do good research. Your own link proves you wrong.

Now you continue lying by claiming that I provided no sources. Post #38, written by me in the Forum, “Bill Maher Ups Ante on Vulgar Palin Attacks” has links that prove you wrong and support my point. Not only did your link prove me right and you wrong, but I provided such links as this one, proving my assertion. Not only did I provide you with these, I additionally provided you with events that proved me right. 1) The media going after Bush for supposedly not being well educated and not knowing all of the leaders of the world, 2) The media releasing to Americans news stories about Bush’s supposed cocaine usage the weekend before the election. But nah…the media wasn’t attempting to destroy Bush, right?!

You proved me wrong? Where Jer? The only person proven wrong was you. Then you started with your usual, “Stop treating me bad, if you don’t I won’t answer you”. You were caught lying, like always I proved it. I used your own link to prove that you are wrong and all you can do is keep on lying.

Whether you like it or not, reply or not, I will always call you on your revision of history, your hypocrisy and your lies. Stop whining about someone else calling you a liar when you have ZERO problem calling others you disagree with liars.

Jer,

Cool Arrow brings up another great point, that you completely ignored when I brought it up in the other forum. The media constantly questioning the legitimacy of the 2000 election. But nah, the media treated Bush very nicely.

You also forget the media attacking Bush for supposedly ending his work day earlier than Clinton. the list goes on and on how the media, from before his was President until his last day in office, did everything within their power to destroy Bush. But it is easier to lie to yourself and to everyone else Jer than to admit the truth.

I guess all Americans were dreaming when they  heard the Left and the news media questioning Bush's legitimacy to be President.

Mr. Shy,

and of course he needs to stop with his constant, "Liberallies, treat me better or I won't debate you..." He treats individuals he disagrees and does not like much worse than he can claim I have treated him. For example, how dare he ask me to stop calling him a liar when he had no problem calling another poster a liar.

Anyway, he doesn't like me very much because I expose his radical Liberalism. Everything else he says is just a smoke screen.

Dear Dave:
I've read you enough to know you're too intelligent to fully side with those jerks, hence your "a little over-the-top" which is quite different from the whining of their "McCarthy" hue and cry accusations. I can't say whether I agree with you or not. The problem the GOP has is it's been in the minority for so many decades it simply doesn't know how to govern as the majority and ironically the flipside is that Dims are so deranged they still think they're the government even as the minority; I think that's the real reason for the delusional IL trip of both them and my IN legislators; how dare the majority GOP fail to recognize we always govern, even when we're in the minority, because the voters just made a simple mistake and they'll recognize it and apologize and call us to come back and forgive them for their terrible mistake; what were they thinking to vote GOP, sorry (sob, sob). ;) Gag me with a spoon!

But, kidding aside, I wonder if the GOP isn't right to be concerned about the level of violence and assault on the party of Dims and the unions for whom they whore. To let such lawlessness go unchallenged (and from my college days I can assure you that there are plenty of those pervert fascist professors who are in the thick of it straining-whoring after the Dims-unions-thugs ménage à trois and quite happy, even giddy, not to let a little criminal violence get in the way of their satisfaction. I had hoped that after my generation rioted and burned the colleges in the '60s-'70s that there would be a counter-revolution to restore sanity by the next generation, but it appears I may have been too optimistic for it to be an overall movement despite some stellar examples I've been privileged to meet that gives me hope for the future from which only God can save us.

I pray we don't become like them.

Just as women can get away with certain things and men different things, what the Lefties can get away with is not the same as with us.

Just the way it is. If we get too picky and aggressive we look mean, bitter and ignorant.

There's just too much at stake to blow it now on anti-public employee (we're not all Dems), anti-Academia rantings and ideological disagreements. We should stick to the economic problems including this ridiculous Federal overspending first and foremost.

If the Repubs can't show the voters that they can repair many of the fiscal problems in the Federal and state governments, and that that is indeed also the focus of the TEA Party movement, then we'll be right back where we were before last November so fast it'll make you're head swim.
