CNN's Candy Crowley: Defunding Planned Parenthood Leads to...Sicker Babies?

By Matthew Balan | February 19, 2011 | 11:04

CNN's Candy Crowley adopted the pro-abortion lobby's talking points on Friday's Situation Room, as she asked Rep. Steve King about the House's vote to defund Planned Parenthood: "There's that term, 'penny wise and pound foolish.' Would you worry that, by cutting off those services, people...would have sicker babies, or certain people...wouldn't have HIV testing...and that would just cost us more?"

The journalist, who was substituting for regular anchor Wolf Blitzer, brought on the Iowa Republican and his Democratic colleague, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to comment on the current budget debates at the state and federal levels. Towards the end of her interview, at the 42 minutes into the 6 pm Eastern hour mark, Crowley raised the 240-185 vote earlier that afternoon to eliminate federal funding of Planned Parenthood, and used an argument similar to that of liberal Fox News contributor Jehmu Greene, who emphasized on the February 3, 2011 edition of The O'Reilly Factor how the organization's employees "provide mammograms [and] provide birth control advice." The anchor also hinted that cutting off Planned Parenthood would end up costing more tax dollars in the long run:

[Video embedded below the page break]

CROWLEY: Congressman King, you all voted to cut off fending (sic)- funding for Planned Parenthood as part of some of these votes you're taking. Now, Planned Parenthood has services like HIV testing, prenatal care. You know, there's that term, 'penny wise and pound foolish.' Would you worry that, by cutting off those services, people have- there are certain people that would have sicker babies, or certain people that wouldn't have HIV testing, and then pass it along to something (sic) else, and that would just cost us more?

An on-screen graphic echoed Crowley's question: "House Cuts Planned Parenthood Funds: What about health services for women?"

Note how Crowley doesn't once mention the most controversial procedure that Planned Parenthood provides: abortion. The organization's own annual report for 2008 notes that their facilities across the country performed 324,008 abortions that year. Yet, the CNN anchor shows more concern about infants that theoretically might end up ill due to the proposed cuts than the hundreds of thousands of unborn babies who were actually killed!

Rep. King answered by bringing up one of the key driving factors in the campaign to defund Planned Parenthood: the recent release of undercover videos by the pro-life organization Live Action:

KING: Well, I think of it in terms of Planned Parenthood is conducting the majority- the largest abortion provider, not the majority of abortions, but the largest abortion provider in the country, and some of the things that we've seen in the videotape inside the Planned Parenthood offices are just appalling, and they're revolting, and they're repulsive. And the culture inside the Planned Parenthood office, I think, is reflected in those videos, just like the culture of the ACORN offices was reflected in the videos that we saw then.

I've long been opposed to providing taxpayer dollars to organizations that do abortions or provide pro-abortion counseling, and I think that's a good plan.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Just days earlier, on the February 13, 2011 edition of CNN's State of the Union program, Crowley expressed a more general liberal concern about budget cuts as she interviewed the Obama administration's budget director, Jack Lew: "So let's get down to the basic question, who's going to get hurt in this budget?" One thing is certain: if the defunding of Planned Parenthood manages to survive the budget process, it will certainly hurt them in their large pocketbook, and it will dampen their efforts to butcher the unborn.

It would appear the MSM crowd

Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 11:29am.

It would appear the MSM crowd do not have much faith in ObamaCare withstanding / surviving the light of day scrutiny of the Congress, American people, Supreme Court of the United States of America afterall.

For if by some miracle it did survive, the services, mother and child wellness, health concerns, will be fully covered under the mandate.

This would make the need for agencies such as Planned Parenthood a moot issue.

The true reason the left wants to keep PP funded, is to continue their covert practice of performing ' illegally funded ' abortions on demand, as has been their practice all along.

Liberals ... we can't live with them, they couldn't survive without us ...

Every time I read about Planned Parenthood

Submitted by TheHistorian on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 12:27pm.

I remember its founder, Margaret Sanger, the elitist, racist, eugenicist.  For those who think that this women was a hero, here is a collection of her quotes:

How a baby could be sicker

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 11:42am.

How a baby could be sicker than having its head pierced with scissors and its brains sucked out, I can not guess. But leave it to planned eugenics, I mean parenthood, to lie through its teetch to continue its genocidal campaign against minorities.

Is that ALL liberals have is fear mongering?

Submitted by Slyrr on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 11:47am.

Where is her evidence for this?  Where is her long term study that proves "no funding for abortions" is directly equated to "sicker babies across the country"?   Is she saying that the health of american babies is somehow represented by the 'health' of Planned Parenthood in the form of how much taxpayer money is pumped into it?  Does she think PP is an actual living entity?  A giant baby - and that our tax dollars are the 'food' that keep it alive?  And that this giant baby is somehow some kind of baby 'queen' that all the other babies in the country are symbiotically linked to?  And that if the PP baby 'queen' dies, all the other ants in the hive will die with her?  Just what kind of fools do they take us for?

Liberals have become mob raisers and rabble rouses.  For some reason, EVERY program they love, if it gets defunded, will cause misery death and destruction.  We see it everywhere.  'The GOP wants your grandparents to die or eat dog food.  They want to steal your Social Security.  They want to force you into back alley abortions.  If you don't kill the GOP, they'll kill  you, it's them or us!'  Mark my words, that's where this is going.  The more their fear tactics don't work, the more threatened they'll feel.  They're losing power every hour because people are finally waking up and seeing that we can do just fine without them and their stupid 'leadership'.

If the government shuts down, I appluad that.  I think it will do people good to realize that we can actually do just fine without these clowns.  People will see that we can still work, live and even thrive without Hillary Clinton, or Harry Reid, or the 'god like' Obama.  And maybe the wastrels who have been living on the dole will wake up and realize the party's over and they'd better get off their butts and get a real job.

Poeple have been getting pregnant and having kids for thousands of years before PP came along.  And they'll still be successfully having children, long after PP is destroyed.  The arrogance of liberals is simply galling.  Like people 'need' PP, or their babies will die?  Like we can't raise our children without PP standing behind us and worming into our lives from conception to birth - and after?  Like we're too dumb to know what to do without a bloated government agency?

This makes me want to completely abolish PP and fire everyone who works there, just to prove them wrong.  And when they see people raising kids without their help, maybe they'll be humbled a little and shut the heck up.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Well, it was nearly 19 years

Submitted by bkeyser on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 12:10pm.

Well, it was nearly 19 years ago that my son was born, but as I remember, my wife never went near a Planned Parenthood for her pre-natal care. And yet, she had pre-natal care. How odd.

I wasn't aware though, that the only place you could get HIV testing was at a Planned Parenthood.  I guess if the defunding actually becomes law, we'll have a huge resurgance of AIDS in this country. Bummer.

Planned Parenthood will have to cut out prenatal care and HIV testing, and their other "screening services" like Pap smears, ONLY if they choose to.

The could continue, and sacrifice some of their profit, if they really care about women.  Or they could divert some of their abortion money, which government doesn't give them, into these other services.

What they do is their choice.  Get it, Candy????  CHOICE!!

A word pro-aborts love when THEY use it!

Planned Parenthood provieds vital services?

Talk about pound foolish!  Hay, idiot, Planned Parenthood isn't the only free  care provider in the country.  Each and every service you mentioned , like HIV testing, prenatal care, and the like, is offered FOR FREE in taxpayer, (and private donations) funded clinics in each and every city that Planned Parenthood serves.

You want an HIV test for free?  Great!  I suggest you go to any blood bank and donate blood.  Not only will your blood be tested, you be PAID for it even if your blood is rejected!  The same is true for blood plasma centers.

You want free prenatal care?  GREAT!  Then I suggest you contact your county medical care office.  They will direct you to various FREE clinics that will provide you all the care you need. The same is true for you children.

Face it, Crowley, Planed Parenthood could disappear altogether and it won't HARM anyone. It would, in fact, SAVE almost a million lives every year.

THANK YOU TO "THE HISTORIAN."

Submitted by Herbster on Sat, 02/19/2011 - 3:03pm.

Thank you, Historian, for reminding us, (And educating those who did not know) who Margaret Sanger was and what she stood for.  You are doing the Lord's work here.  The idea that this evil person could be lauded by the left, (Or any rational person)  is totally repulsive.  Lest we forget, Hitler was a great admirer of Sanger.  I have to assume that Candy Crawley and Jehmu Greene have no problem with the murder of the unborn.  "The right to choose,".........where is the "Choice" for the unborn?  Shall we sum it up.......FOLLOW THE MONEY!  Killing babies is big business.  The so-called "Doctors" who do this type of work have already forgotten their Hippocratic Oath.  That's right in line with Rahm Emanuel's brother - a "Doctor" and advisor to obama.  He was quoted as testifying that doctors, "Need to pay less attention to their Hippocratic Oath."  The most shocking thing here is that a (Black) woman like Jehmu Greene would condone and defend what planned parenthood is doing to HER people.  The percentage of (Black) abortions is very high .....and right in line with the eugenic beliefs of Sanger.  For shame, Jehmu Greene.  Are you just a doctrinaire leftist, or just plain stupid?  Having seen you on TV a few times, I fear it is the latter.
