CNN's Misleading Graphic: Barbour 'Won't Denounce Creation of KKK License Plate'

On Wednesday afternoon, CNN aired a misleading graphic about Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour's statements about a proposed license plate honoring a controversial Confederate general from the Civil War. The chyron, which ran during CNN Newsroom and The Situation Room, stated that the "Miss. Gov. won't denounce creation of KKK license plate."

At first glance, one would imagine that the proposed vanity plate has an image of a burning cross or a hooded figure. In reality, the organization behind it, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, aim to honor Nathan Bedford Forrest, who is a controversial figure, even disregarding his early membership in the Klan, because of his involvement in the massacre of black Union troops at Fort Pillow in Tennessee in 1864. Most people probably know the name because of the Oscar-winning movie Forrest Gump, as the title character was named after the Confederate figure (the movie also has a brief clip of actor Tom Hanks, playing Gen. Forrest, donning his Klan robes).

CNN Graphic from 16 February 2011 edition of The Situation Room

Politics Daily's Matt Lewis reported on Wednesday that Governor Barbour actually cast doubt on the passage of the bill proposing the vanity plate: "I know there's not a chance it'll become law." Lewis continued that "Barbour's biggest problem in this instance seems to be that he refused to denounce Forrest. When asked by a reporter, Barbour said: 'I don't go around denouncing people. That's not going to happen. I don't even denounce the news media.'" So the CNN graphic is doubly misleading, as the Republican actually refused to denounce Forrest himself, while offering his negative opinion about the bill's passage.

CNN's Anderson Cooper actually gave a more accurate report on the Mississippi governor the previous evening on his Anderson Cooper 360 program:

COOPER: Well, Governor Haley Barbour has been silent on the issue until today, interestingly enough. He was pressed by reporters about why he hasn't denounced the idea or said he supports the idea. The governor says he doesn't- quote, 'go around denouncing people,' but he went on to say that the proposed license plate would never pass the state legislature anyway.

MISSISSIPPI GOVERNOR HALEY BARBOUR: The Nathan Bedford Forrest tag is not going to happen. Isn't that what you asked me? Is that what you asked me?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE REPORTER: Yeah, that is what I asked.

BARBOUR: The answer is it's not going to happen.

NBC's Natalie Morales also reported on the controversy on Wednesday's Today show:

MORALES: Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour is refusing to condemn a proposal to honor a former Ku Klux Klan leader and Confederate general on a state license plate. The state's NAACP has called for Barbour to denounce the plan to commemorate Nathan Bedford Forrest, who led an 1864 massacre of black Union troops during the Civil War.

Any Path To An Accusatory Lie

Q: Governor Barbour, when did you stop beating your wife?

How do denounce something that does not exist? They make no sense and yet use it to vilify someone of the opposition. They're pretty sure the public is too stupid to notice and buy their attack as valid. Or perhaps they are stupid enough to believe they have a valid point. In either case they have no excuse for their behavior

Barbour. Compare to Breitbart posting an excerpt of Sherrod

Submitted by Gary Hall on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 8:42pm.

CNN - "The most trusted name in news."

Andrew Breitbart simply posted a excerpt of Shirley Sherrod - and the national media went rabid. Here, CNN is editing, and quoting excerpts which are completely out -of-context and misrepresent what Barbour actually stated, in order to falsely smear a sitting Governor.

Sick.

Yeah, that's a huge threat to

Submitted by ant on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 8:53pm.

Yeah, that's a huge threat to the survival of our Nation, license plates, way to keep the public informed CNN! I'll be waiting for the next Lindsey Lohan story so I can discern what kind of country my nephew will grow up in.

Maybe we should just go ahead and pass the license plates so we can find out what's in it.

in the mid-Atlantic region over the last couple of days, and with that seems to be the awakening of the damned stink bugs. So far, I have yet to hear Gov. Barbour denounce these pests so one must assume that he supports them and their agenda.

Great.

stink bugs

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 9:15pm.

Got 'em here in PA, and yes, they've awakened.  I don't know how much of the country has these disgusting creatures, but I'd be willing to use some DDT if it would get rid of the nasty things.

They're awful

Submitted by bkeyser on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 9:22pm.

aren't they Rad? Last summer, the guy I work with spent the better part of a Saturday emptying his entire work van of every tool he owned, dropping the headliner, door skins, and anything else he could take apart so he could vacuum out the thousands of stink bugs that infested it -after one day of leaving the doors open at a jobsite. Some asian imports are really costly.

OMG we never vacuum them up,

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 9:26pm.

OMG we never vacuum them up, the smell comes through the vacuum forever.  I prefer sending them to the nasty death of the toilet.

But we really have to start being able to use pesticides again.

This was a construction

Submitted by bkeyser on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 9:34pm.

This was a construction vacuum- so no worries on the smell. The little guys just gather in the bag and the bag goes in the dumpster.

They were bad last year- I'm betting that'll look mild compared to this year.

I don't know if it's still

Submitted by ant on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 10:50pm.

I don't know if it's still up, Radical, but Penn State had an informative web-page on the little buggers and their spread through PA. I found it while looking at spiders native to PA after a family member was bitten and had to go to the hospital.

Thanks ant.

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 11:03pm.

It's weird, my daughter goes to college about 45 miles away, no stink bugs there.  My nephew is at school about 3 miles away, tons of stinkbugs on his campus.

We really need to find a way to get rid of the nasty things.  They also destroy crops.

While you're at it, denounce SCOTUS...

Submitted by Pahlavan on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 9:26pm.

After all the Supreme Court issued the Dred Scott decision! So, let's denounce them and all institutions that had any part of slavery!! Let's start at the top and denounce the Presidency!

Denouncing the past is cathartic but other than assuaging one's misplaced guilt, it has no effect on reality - but, then, isn't that what liberals gravitate towards?

I see the NAACP has nothing

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Wed, 02/16/2011 - 11:54pm.

I see the NAACP has nothing better to do.  I am surprised they have not asked for another 'special' holiday' or something.  Last year, they threatened to boycott Hollywood if more powerful black men were not cast in American television shows.  Noticed how just about every black judge, police chief, etc. etc. on television surfaced within the last year?   It is supposed to sell the idea of "Obama" to us, so I have been told.

The NAACP: perpetuating the myth that there is "two America's".  A black one, and a white one.

The NAACP: making it impossible to be color blind
