Stephanopoulos: ObamaCare 'Closer' After Presser; Gushes Obama 'Knows His Stuff'

George Stephanopoulos, ABC Anchor; & Diane Sawyer, ABC Anchor | NewsBusters.orgABC’s George Stephanopoulos giddily appraised President Obama during Thursday’s Good Morning America: “It’s clear, listening to the President last night, that he knows his stuff. He knows health care policy.” He also predicted that the passage of the Democrat’s health care “reform” plan was “closer” after the presser, despite his later admission that it had been delayed until after August.

The This Week anchor appeared early in the 7 am hour to analyze the press conference. GMA anchor Diane Sawyer first asked: “Closer to a health care bill this morning or further away?” Stephanopoulos replied: “Closer -- and it’s clear -- listening to the President last night, that he knows his stuff. He knows health care policy. I also think he made a strong case against the status quo. We just couldn’t keep doing what we’re doing right now.”

The only negative remark that the former Clinton administration official made was in analyzing the President’s success in forwarding his plan. Stephanopoulos hinted that the blame belonged more with Congress: “I think he was less successful...in selling what he wants to do in part because...he doesn’t have a single plan to sell right now.”

Sawyer and her ABC colleague at least demonstrated the unwieldiness of the multiple-plan situation by displaying the physical size of the bills that are currently making their way through the halls of Congress. It was at the end of this extended exchange/struggle over the bulk of the several proposal that Stephanopoulos admitted that “it is clear the House and the Senate are not going to pass the bills by the August recess- certainly not the Senate. And if the Senate doesn’t go, the House won’t either.”

The two concluded the segment with the question of the recent arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates arrest. The This Week host, despite his earlier glowing over the President’s performance on the health care issue, gave another negative analysis about Obama: “I think he was doing fine up until that point, when he said the police acted stupidly- the most vivid words of the press conference...Now, is this going to hurt him in any real way? Probably not- but it did take the focus...off what he wanted to discuss last night, which was health care, health care, health care.” Just moments later however, Stephanopoulos did compliment the Democrat on one aspect of his comments on the issue: “I think when he made the joke about- listen, if I did this, I'd get shot- I think that was a real, human, solid moment. Then he just sort of crosses that line when he says the police acted stupidly.”

The full transcript of the segment from the Thursday, July 23 Good Morning America:

DIANE SAWYER: And to get ‘The Bottom Line’ on all that was said last night, ABC’s chief Washington correspondent, host of ‘This Week,’ George Stephanopoulos. Closer to a health care bill this morning or further away?

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Closer- and it’s clear- listening to the president last night, that he knows his stuff. He knows health care policy. I also think he made a strong case against the status quo. We just couldn’t keep doing what we’re doing right now. I think he was less successful in- in selling what he wants to do- in part because, Diane, he doesn’t have a single plan to sell right now.

SAWYER: They don’t have the bills out there and consolidated-

STEPHANOPOULOS: They have several bills.

SAWYER: Several bills- and to show everyone at home what we're talking- the dimension, literally, of what we’re talking about here- we brought them in- and I don't know if I can lift them from this angle, and I'll probably go over on this. So, this is the House bill.

STEPHANOPOULOS House- Energy and Commerce (Committee)- but they’re still working on that. It hasn’t passed.

SAWYER: This is the one- this is the Senate health bill, right?

STEPHANOPOULOS: That’s the health bill. That’s passed out of the committee.

SAWYER: Ok, I’m going to try it here. This is the Senate Finance Committee bill?

STEPHANOPOULOS: They’re still negotiating it out- there’s no bill yet-

SAWYER: You have to help me.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And yet, you want me to pick it up.

SAWYER: Yeah.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And then finally, you have the House Ways and Means (committee bill).

SAWYER: House Ways and Means-

STEPHANOPOULOS: That has passed the committee.

SAWYER: Right- so everybody at home can see, in this stack alone is what- some place in here is a health care bill?

STEPHANOPOULOS: Only two of them have passed out of committee. The third one is being considered by a House committee. The fourth is being negotiated by the Senate Finance Committee, and eventually, they got to get all these out. Now, the president wanted this to happen by the August recess.

SAWYER: Right.

STEPHANOPOULOS: It is clear the House and the Senate are not going to pass the bills by the August recess- certainly not the Senate. And if the Senate doesn’t go, the House won’t either-

SAWYER: So they’re coming back on September 8th from their recess, and that’s when they have to make this happen by the end of the year, he believes or-

STEPHANOPOULOS: And that’s why what’s likely- you know, the president had this press conference prime-time last night. He’s going to have to do this all over again. He is going to have to speak to the country in September, when they actually have a single bill to sell.

SAWYER: Right, instead of this- and by then, I will have done upper-body strength training and be able to lift some of these.

(Stephanopoulos laughs)

SAWYER: Let's go to Professor Gates- Henry Louis Gates- Skip Gates, as he’s known to his friends- the whole incident. Were you surprised that the president took a stand on a local police matter?

STEPHANOPOULOS: You know, it was a fascinating thing to watch, because it was clear that- psychologically for the president, the press conference was over. He had answered all of the health care questions. At one point, he seemed to think that it was- actually, everybody said- no, let me take one more. They knew this question was going to be coming in some fashion. You saw the president confess- listen, I have a personal interest in this case. I know Skip Gates. I think he was doing fine up until that point, when he said the police acted stupidly- the most vivid words of the press conference- and that’s clearly a case where he was taking sides in the dispute, even though he confessed that he wasn’t there. Now, is this going to hurt him in any real way? Probably not- but it did take the focus of- off what he wanted to discuss last night, which was health care, health care, health care.

SAWYER: And it’s going to go on for several days.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Certainly in Cambridge- no question about that.

SAWYER: No.

STEPHANOPOULOS: The police officer this morning is saying, I’m not apologizing. I’m not taking anything back. And, of course, none of us were there. None of us know exactly what happened in that house that night.

SAWYER: Sort of thing- everybody who works inside the White House- when he does that, goes  (deep breath)

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, I think- a combination. I think when he made the joke about- listen, if I did this, I’d get shot- I think that was a real, human, solid moment. Then he just sort of crosses that line when he says the police acted stupidly.

OBAMA: KING OF SCAMWOW

 OBAMA: KING OF SCAMWOW

Mark it. July 22, 2009.
This is the day when B. H. Obama simply ran out of charm, out of
smiles, out of blameshifting, out of all logic, out of reality, out of
mojo and out of credibility. If any other (non-historic) POTUS shot the
voters and reporters this line of factless assertions they would
forever be labeled a Dufus ScamWow.

Any thinking voter can take out a couple of lines most anywhere and
see its baloney. The federal gov-meant is going to finance anything
mostly by savings-efficiency? Now that IS historic. Not since the Grace
Commission has there been any of that. Who does he think he is fooling?

The democrat gov-meant does not want to “take over health care”? Historic #2. Who does he think he is fooling?

The Republicans have no ideas? They submitted 38 amendments in the
House…all were rejected…including the one about Congress being part of
any new HC Plan. Who does he think he is fooling?

The HC Plan will not grow the debt? After Medicaide and Medicare
went broke, after decades when most any major federal program (like M
& M) quickly became 3-9x more costly than the “democrat selling
price”…who does he think he is fooling?

This baloney speech from a serial liar who demanded we borrow a
trillion from the Red Chinese to “stimulate” the economy six months ago!
He and his fellow socialists 4x the debt. Now he wants another trillion for HC? Who does he think he is fooling?

Voters have had enough of this wild spending and serial deception.
Some are even laughing in the face of their congressman at meetings.
Its a start. Keep in mind the next J. Carter Obama phases are taxes and
inflation. By the extra shoes will be taken to meetings of these
criminal thieves in congress. I say FAX FAX laugh laugh and throw
throw.

Send supporters of these fiscal insanities home to stay in November 2010.
Wish the election was next week.

Yeah, after listening to

Yeah, after listening to Obama's razzle-dazzle bs last night, I agree - he knows his "stuff".

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

These idiots must have watched a different presser

Obama the marionette doesn't much of anything, and even less about "his" health care plan.

-Dave

Just exactly who is this Barack Hussein Obama?

Obama could accidently shoot

Obama could accidently shoot his own foot off and Stephie would still call him a great marksman and a credit to all gun owners. This report is no surprise.

They have replaced

They have replaced journalists and analysts with court scribes - who's only responsibilty seems to be recording the great deeds of the king.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

I don't know how these

I don't know how these people can look themselves square in the face every morning and believe they are doing a great service to their job or the people they suppose to represent.

I don't know either. Even

I don't know either. Even given the bias in the past, the current phenomenom is almost supernatural in it's inexplicability.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

I do Chris

I told this to Dee Bunk a couple of years ago.

The way they look at themselves in the mirror every morning....with their paychecks taped to their foreheads.

Elsewise they'd run screaming from the room.

I hope he fails, too.

→ Chevy

I think Obama shot himself in the foot last night, and I'd swear he did it on purpose.

I'm going with the "great marksman" vote.

I could not be so enthralled

I could not be so enthralled with anyone not to call BS on their statements. Hell I thought even Stephie would have his limits.

Man was I wrong.

Good one, Heavy!

I am soooo laughing at that.

I hope he fails, too.

Afternoon to you Blonde...

Hope all is well with you?

what a load of crap!

what conference was he watching?  the polls have plummetted, and this is the reason he's ramming this through congress.  the trouble is, all of congress sees the same poll numbers, not to mention all of the e-mails and screaming phone calls from their constituants.

if obamacare is enacted all manufacturing will exit the borders of this once great country.

this must not pass.

swing hard in case you hit it.

Chicken Little Coming Home To Roost

"I also think he made a strong case against the status quo. We just couldn’t keep doing what we’re doing right now.”

We can't just keep doing what we're doing right now.  Yeah, that's what they've been saying since Clinton (90s).  Just like we have to stop global warming right now... or is it global cooling (70s), I can't remember.  And we have to bailout the banks right now or the world will end. Yep, that's the way to craft public policy--reactionary and without reflection.

Just exactly who is this Barack Hussein Obama?

Knows his stuff??? What a crock!

Knows his stuff???  What a crock!

First, he doesn't even know that pediatricians don't remove tonsils!

Second, he doesn't know that tonsils don't get removed for allergies!
And even if a child has repeated throat infections, removing the tonsils is a last resort, not a first step!

This is the personification of "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." Just like his assumption that if a kid is in the ER with an asthma attack, it's because he wasn't treated properly...namely, given an inhaler by his regular doctor.

Only Obama thought it was a

Only Obama thought it was a breathalyzer, didn't he?

MB: Inhaler???

I think you mean breathalyzer, dontcha?

As a baby and a little kid,

As a baby and a little kid, I was plagued with horrific eczema that made my life miserable. After trying every treatment in the book, my doctor told my parents that, as a side effect to removing tonsils in kids, he had seen eczema clear up also. So, even though there was nothing directly wrong with my tonsils, they went ahead and had them removed and - guess what? The eczema went away and I have been clear ever since. Now, do you think "Hail Mary" procedures like this will be allowed under ObamaCare?

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Hasn't Steffie said the dem

Hasn't Steffie said the dem candidate "won" all the prez and vice prez debates since 2000?

 I am just shocked...shocked!

What I learned from last night

If you talk in lies, you often have a hard time remembering what the last lie was.

you are totally right!

Several times last night he made a comment, and then 20 mins later he forgot all about it and contradicted himself.

I do confess to getting some sick enjoyment out of it. Last night did more to kill the bill than anything a Republican could have said.

It was funny

Wasn't it.

Unbecoming the leader of a great nation. Might work fine in a banana republic like Venezuela.

Totally agree with candance

As I was watching that performance I was thinking the same thing. Let him did his own holes.

Stephanopoulos should be ashamed of himself. He has lost all professional integrity.

H CARE IDEAS U DON'T HEAR MUCH

H CARE IDEAS YOU DON’T HEAR MUCH

1…Every adult citizen should pay into the HC system…maybe a % like Social Security.
2…More consistent paying for the same services by insurance plans-companies.
3…Portability at the same cost for at least 6 months…to maybe a year.
4…Statewide and contiguous state(s) group pricing of plans.
5…Retiree portability out of their “state” networks so they can re-locate.
6…Illegals “out” and congress “in” for any new HC plan as a “given”.
7…Tax free medical savings accounts.
8…A national “free or nearly free” ideas group…an unpaid Medical Reform Commission (aka a medical Grace Commission).

Doug Schexnayder, Ph.D. (theconservativecrawfish)

or...

We could implement some actual conservative ideas:

-Get rid of group insurance plans and let people buy insurance al a carte.

-Pay cash for routine visits and generic drugs.

-Stop letting drug companies hide their prices behind a copay. Force them to survive on a true open market.

-Strict tort reform and cheaper tuition at medical school so doctors can charge less.

-Only buy insurance against devastating illness or hospital stays.

-Tax free retirement savings you can dip into without fees.

-Provide guaranteed abortion amnesty to religious groups to encourage them to reopen closed hospitals.

-Allow insurance companies to compete across state lines.

→ Thanks candance

And 've never seen the breakdown of catastrophic vs casual treatment stats.

What we're all scared about is the catastrophic.

I could pay my own casual.

me neither cool

Those kind of stats don't get out much.

At dinner tonight my Obama-loving mom in law asked us about the casual care issue. I asked her what she thinks will happen the day that every poor person in Richmond is told that they can magically go to a doctor for free. Her eyes got wide as she started to realize she wouldn't get an appointment with her favorite doctor for another six months.

Damn righ Candance

Matter of fact, I wouln't be against taking insurance out of the picture altogether. If we had competition between doctors, instead of collusion between insurance companies, we would see some affordable health care.

Also, if people had to pay full price to go to the emergency room for a low grade fever, they might opt for the Tylenol.

              I

I expected as much from George. He works for obambam.

Baghdad Bob strikes again

Even my liberal friends were disappointed last night. My mother-in-law who currently has no insurance was greatly interested in learning about his plan, but she gave up and went to bed halfway through. His answers were too long winded and couched in technical terms she couldn't understand. After we translated a few comments she got discouraged.

It takes a pretty strong kool aid drinker to think that presser was successful.

No, Stephenfetchitopoulos,

No, Stephenfetchitopoulos, the "stupid cop" comment is not going to hurt him in any real way.

Just ask any cop.

If Obama knows his stuff he can answer these questions

There appear to be a basic assumption that a government run system can reduce both costs to the providers and prices to the consumer without price transparency or competition. How can this be? They never explain specifically how this can possibly be done. Also, as the President himself implied in his news conference, uninsured peple using the emergency room and not paying for it shift cost to the paying sectors of the system, thereby raising prices to the consumer. If these uninsured, or irresponsible people do this now and can't afford coverage to pay for their system utilization, how will they be able to afford or pay for it under a government system? Afterall, the programs designed for people in need aren't fully utilized(SCHIP) for example and 2 othr programs, Medicare and Medicaid have reimbursement policies that necessitate the cost shifting the President talks about. What proposals have been put forth to change this, other than denial of care? What happens when the system has no place to cost shift to? These are just a few things that need to be discussed before we overthrow a system most of us like and surrender nearly 20% of the economy to government control.

Present system

Hi, I have private insurance and am extremely happy with it. I won't say its cheap but I cost the the company a lot of money for a couple of years and they are now getting some back. All I can say is bully for them! The company has negotiated down the charges and never questioned any treatment except major surgery when they wanted me to get another opinion. I was going to do that anyway as I don't like being sliced and diced without a couple of opinions.

If the company finds a need to raise my co-pay because of the inflation Obama will cause, I certainly don't want to be forced into the same sort of program as is run by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Interestingly enough, that is the same agency that said they couldn't give an accounting of treaty money as it would be too complicated. I bring this up bcause of my heritage. My ancestors sold land and were neve paid. It won't happen. The plan Obama has will deliver the same level of care as exists on the reservations.

Air Obama

Stephanopoulos replied, “Closer- and it’s clear- listening to the president last night, that he knows his stuff. He knows health care policy. . . . "

But policy isn't the challenge.  Finding the funding for it is the challenge.  He demands a comprehensive, universal health care policy that pays for itself, but he can't figure out how to do it.  Lofty langugage about cost efficiencies and savings does not address the math.

He's waiting for Pelosi and Reid to figure out the numbers, but they've never balanced a budget (nor desired to), so there's little hope there.

". . .  I also think he made a strong case against the status quo. We just couldn’t keep doing what we’re doing right now.”

He didn't make any stronger case than he's done in the past.  Rhetoric sprinkled with the health care nightmares of his campaign staffers don't make the point any stronger.

"Stephanopoulos hinted that the blame belonged more with Congress: “I think he was less successful...in selling what he wants to do- in part because...he doesn’t have a single plan to sell right now.”

So, Boy George loves his strong speech, but acknowledges that he didn't sell his plan to the public.

Huh?

Call me crazy, but we were told the whole point of his press conference was to sell the American public on his plan.  If he failed to do so, it doesn't really matter how good the speech sounded.

I would say that the President's speech was nothing but hot air.

And

which one of his speeches are NOT hot air? this mancan talk out bothsides of his mouth and the MSM thinks it's Gospel !!! Just remember all you cops out there OBAMA THINKS YOU ARE STUPID FOR DOING YOUR JOB!!! REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOUR UNION WANTS YOU TO VOTE "D"

"I LOVE DEAD KENNEDY'S"

When it this moron going to get with the NEW spin that "Obama wanted the healthcare take-over vote DELAYED anyway, until after August.  The man's a genius!  This is what he wanted!  Honest!"?

Give me a break Stephy, your slobbering again

STEPHANOPOULOS: You know, it was a fascinating thing to watch, because
it was clear that- psychologically for the president, the press
conference was over. He had answered all of the health care questions.

Obama didnt come close to answering any of these questions: From Rush's site

All
right, here are five questions DeMint would like the president to
answer:

"1. If the major provisions of the health care bills will not
kick in until 2013, four years from now, why the [hurry] to pass a
thousand-page bill before the August recess, a bill you admit that you
haven’t fully read yourself?

"2. You have said your health
care bill will cut costs and not increase the deficit. But, independent
analysis by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office contradicts
both claims, saying it will raise costs and increase the deficit by
$240 billion in the first ten years. What independent analysis will you
provide that supports your claims and refutes CBO's?

"3. You
have repeatedly said that your health care bill allows any American who
likes their current employer-based plan to keep it. But the most
comprehensive independent analysis available, by the Lewin Group,
contradicts your claim and found your bill will force over 80 million
Americans to lose their current coverage. Will you provide independent
analysis to refute this study?" And Obama won't.  He doesn't debate.
He clears the field.  He gets rid of opponents.  He does not debate
issues.  He does not do that.  He has his ideas -- and they are his,
and they are right, and they're going to happen come hell or high water
-- and we don't even have the right to disagree.  We are being uppity
if we disagree with this man's brilliance.

"4. Your own record
in the Senate reveals you spent years voting against nearly every
reform to make health care more affordable and accessible, but this
week you said that opponents of your plan are 'content to perpetuate
the status quo, [and] are, in fact, fighting reform on behalf of
powerful special interests.' Which specific elected officials will you
cite that have proposed to keep the status quo, and is that how you
characterize the opposition of the 52 Blue Dog Democrats in the
House...?

"5. Yes or no question: Will you guarantee pro-life
Americans that, under your plan, they will not be forced to subsidize
elective abortions?" Five questions for the president tonight.

How about someone works on these before bothering to get back with us!!

Reparations has always been Obama's ultimate goal.

I find it interesting that someone like Obama would do this for his people. Why? Because they really aren't his people. His Dad is African, his Mom American (white). So where does he get the inspiration to extract reparations? As far as we know he has no slave ancestry here in the states.

States that failed

We have a great history of state experiments in government health care, in Tennessee and Hawaii and Massachusetts that have been abject failures. Why isn't the Congress looking at those plans so that they will not make the same mistakes the states did? Why aren't those plans being compared in the news to educate people on why they failed?

When did Tennessee

When did Tennessee experiment with healthcare?
