Wolf Blitzer: Failure to Extend Payroll Tax Cut Would Be ‘Great Ammunition’ for Democrats to Use
When asked how both parties would handle an ultimate failure to extend the payroll tax cut, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer immediately painted the scenario as a big advantage for the Democrats. “Well it’ll be great ammunition for the Democrats, because they’ll obviously blame the Republicans, especially House Republicans,” Blizter asserted during the 2 p.m. hour of Newsroom.
Blitzer didn’t say how Republicans could use the news to their advantage; he only expounded upon how President Obama and the Democrats would “hammer” Republicans if a deal was not struck. Blitzer noted that Obama’s rising poll numbers could be related to the battle over the tax cut extension.
“I think it’s in part because he’s pushing really hard for this payroll tax cut to be extended at least for another year. It’s probably helping him in his bid for re-election,” he noted of Obama. “So it’s going to put a lot of pressure on the Republicans.”
Blitzer’s analysis could definitely aid the White House communications team in getting Obama’s message out that House Republicans are the ones with the most to lose. CNN’s Randi Kaye also seemed to do her part.
Kaye, during the previous hour of Newsroom, suggested that the refusal of House Republicans to accept the current deal was “a bit of a political move.”
A transcript of the segment, which aired on December 20 around 2:13 p.m. EST, is as follows:
BROOKE BALDWIN: We are eleven days away from this payroll tax cut expiring. We’re also eleven or twelve days away from an election year. And Wolf Blitzer, hammer this home for me. I mean, the stakes are so, so high, if – and this is the hypothetical “if” game – if a compromise is not made, how do Democrats, how do Republicans use this as ammunition come November?
WOLF BLITZER: Well it’ll be great ammunition for the Democrats, because they’ll obviously blame the Republicans, especially House Republicans. Republicans are not in control of the Senate, the Democrats have the majority in the Senate. But they do have the majority – a lopsided majority in the House of Representatives. And so the President will -- and in his own re-election campaign, and other Democrats in districts all over the country – they’ll hammer the Republicans for allowing taxes to go up for 160 million Americans. They’ll blame the Republicans, they’ll hit them hard on this, and presumably I think it’s one of the factors why, in this new poll, this new CNN/ORC poll that we released just a little while ago – Brooke, the President’s job approval number has just gone up to 49 percent, which is not fabulous, but it’s certainly better than the 44 percent it was back in November, so it’s a nice jump for the President. I think it’s in part because he’s pushing really hard for this payroll tax cut to be extended at least for another year. It’s probably helping him in his bid for re-election. So it’s going to put a lot of pressure on the Republicans.

Wolf meant, "This will be great ammunition for the lib media to use."

They'll pound away at it and ignore the logistical nightmare a 2 month extension would be.

will overlook the ridiculousness of the two month proposal by the senate and blame the republican house.....especially with the press acting as willing accomplices....

don't pay attention to the antics going on in DC. They are more worried about the NFL playoffs and shopping for the holidays.
This tax bill is endemic to Obama's re-election. That's all.

Somebody needs to sit this Obama guy down and explain.
1. No tax increases.
2. No short term idiocy.
3. No bill will get by the House that doesn't meet the two criteria above.
4. Establishment Republicans are not going to be able to save his rear end.
5. The Tea Party is not anywhere dead.
6. People are still p'od.
7. If the money doesn't fit the actual role of the government, that is if only the Federal Government will fund it, the project is dead. DOA. Inert. Ain't gonna pass the smell test.
8. We plan to re-announce with a stronger than 2010 showing next November.
Clean out your desks RINO and Democrats (of all ilk).

I gave Scott Brown $500 in the special election to get elected. After kissing
Harry Reid on the mouth over this abortion of a bill no more money for Senator Brown!

The tax cut is more candy for the masses who thrive on it. Meanwhile we are borrowing over a trillion a year to pay for our excesses. Why don't we wake up. The world definitely is going to Hell in a hand basket.
Wolf's failure to understand

Wolf never mentioned how Republicans could use the news to their advantage because Wolf is not capable of seeing things, or even conceptualizing things, from a Republican perspective.

Wolf is not even pretending to answer the question as a neutral observer. Wolf is simply rooting for his home team to win!
The equally absurd part ofthis is that the lame duck house that passed this absurd idea a year ago had already been voted out of office! They were voted out because they were fiscally irresponsible!
Now we have the Democrats, and cheerleaders like Wolf, pretending that gutting social security funding without ANY plan to fix social security is a good idea!
On the fair side, it was fascinating to see Greta Vansystern get whacked by Santorum for doing EXACTLY the same cheerleading as Wolf did in this clip!
Of course, Newsbusters is not likely to show that clip as it was on Fox and they have guest appearances on that network to protect!

does anybody even watch those two creaky old washed up guys on CNN (confirmed nitwicks network). talk about two unhappy and sour old farts. watching a test pattern or some old show on cable is more rewarding and enlightening than that wolf man with the scrufty beard and that Mc Cafferty who could be a poster boy for a face lift, and a brain implant.
Sad but true -- Blitzer is probably correct . . .

. . . when he sees the political advantage the Democrats would have if the 2-month extension is not passed.
The details don't matter. The absurdity of passing just a 2-month extension doesn't matter. The Left has defined conservatives a cruel, insensitive people who care not for helping neighbors in distress, and the MSM has portrayed its passage as a 'no brainer.'
Like it or not, Obama and friends have shaped the battlespace on this one, and regardless of Boehner's logic and 12-month alternative, the GOP will take the hit on this one.
No, They Won't.

Let people who favor a two-month extension explain how it will make any behavioral impact. Then sit back and watch them self-destruct.
This bill is a game.
No more games.
No more bs.
No more lies.
No more smoke and mirrors.
No more of the same ol' same ol' Washington claptrap.
This is a blip and it will not save a single seat. The Dems are going to have to cheat like they've never cheated before in order to make a dent in the tsunami coming their way.

And right now, the Dems have more points on the board.
Will it have a long term impact? I don't know. It depends on how it plays out in the next two weeks, and there's so much time between now and Election Day 2012, there's bound to be more issues in play.
But like I said, the public won't be interested in the details now -- Let me have the candy bar now instead of two candy bars later. They just want to know if the Congress extended the payroll tax cuts (2-months or 12-months, it doesn't matter at this point), and if the cuts aren't extended, the House Republicans will get the blame. The Republicans will be painted as the party that wants tax cuts for the rich but not the middle-class (This mantra has been sung for weeks now), and the polls will reflect the impact.
That's how the game is played, whether we like it or not.
