CNN's Obnoxious Question: Will GOP Listen to McCain's Warning to Raise Debt Ceiling?

By Matt Hadro | July 21, 2011 | 12:39

A  A

Although President Obama and the Democrats have stridently insisted that increased tax revenues be part of a debt ceiling deal, CNN is content to choose sides and paint only the conservative Republicans as stubborn extremists for opposing the revenue increases. Anchor Kyra Phillips asked Thursday morning if Republicans would listen to the warning of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to the House GOP not to shut down the government over spending cuts and taxes.

The network has previously resorted to using moderate Republicans and conservatives like David Brooks to frame the Tea Party congressmen as fringe. Their latest source is McCain, who warned Republican House members that the government shutdown in 1995 helped spur President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election. "Will they listen?" CNN said of Republicans, as if Sen. McCain was the voice of reason.

As this is not the first showdown over a possible government shutdown, so also is it not the first time the media have slammed Republicans as extremists during a debt ceiling standoff.

Before the 1995 government shutdown, a November 20, 1995 Time/CNN poll asked "Do you agree or disagree that the Republicans in Congress are going too far in cutting back government programs?" The poll was begging the answer that indeed, the Republicans were taking matters too far.

Around that same time, in Time's Man of the Year cover story on Newt Gingrich, Nancy Gibbs and Karen Tumulty wrote of the House Speaker, "Under pressure he reverted to the pompous thug of late-night cable." They also accused him of shutting the government down just to make a point with President Clinton.

Below is the text of CNN's question, which aired on July 21 at 10:27 a.m. EDT:

KYRA PHILLIPS: John McCain warns GOP House members to remember 1995. That government shutdown is often credited for Clinton's successful re-election in '96. So will they listen?

Yes, by all means, turn to the failed "reacher across the aisle" who came back with stumps for fingers, for advice.
Advice on what? How to do what Democrats want and still get trashed?

Wrong

Submitted by Joe W. on Thu, 07/21/2011 - 1:52pm.

From the article that you linked to:

"Asked whether GOP lawmakers supporting the House "cut, cap and balance" debt limit measure would be unwilling to ultimately compromise, Boehner said, "I'm sure we've got some members who believe that, but I do not believe that would be anywhere close to the majority.'"

How is THIS "caving"??? His latest "Tweet" stated that they are not even close to any kind of a "deal".

Regardless of how the news people frame this debate, I feel the American people understand, this debate as theft and extortion.

Congress of the USA is playing a deadly game.

McCain is nothing but a jackass in an elephant suit

But, like his fellow RINOs, he also understands the American electorate.

Of course he is going to support a debt ceiling increase, because he knows the stoopid zombie sheeple voters have memories that only go back to the last episode of American Idol, or the last issue of People Magazine.

I mean, look at how many times they have returned him to the Senate, despite his history of kissing donkey behind, and unless he retires, they will probably send him back yet again.

That would be the same McCain whose nomination helped spur President barack obama's 2008 election.

Wrong strategy

Submitted by Model850 on Thu, 07/21/2011 - 3:43pm.

I wish the Reps in the House would just turn the damn tables on the Dems and Obama.

Pass a bill that cuts spending now and raises the debt ceiling, with promises to increase taxes in the future. Send the bill to the Senate and see what the Dems do with it. If it doesn't pass there then the responsibility for "default" falls squarely on the shoulders of Reid and company. Could the media spin it any other way?

After all, the Reps "compromised," raised the debt ceiling AND gave Obama and the Dems the tax increases they have been crying for since day one.

Then that promise to "raise revenues" can just fall by the wayside like all those past forgotten promises from Dems to "cut spending later if you'll just raise taxes today."

Yeah, I know. A little simplistic and naive but I am not sure why it wouldn't work.

The more important question-

Submitted by big.league.slider on Thu, 07/21/2011 - 11:13pm.

Forget McCain.

The more pressing question is will the GOP heed Obama's 2006 warning about the dangers of increasing the debt limit? According to Obama's 2006 statement, increasing the debt limit will make us indentured slaves to foreign potentates.
