Surprise, Surprise: CNN Belief Blog Offers Lazy, Hasty Rebuke of Biblical Condemnation of Gay Marriage

By Matt Hadro | June 21, 2011 | 17:49

A  A

CNN's Belief Blog contributor Jonathan Dudley offered the same tired liberal arguments against a Biblical defense of traditional marriage in a June 21 piece. The same writer who satirically argued that heterosexuals should not be allowed to raise children grilled the Biblical argument as being "riddled with self-serving double-standards."

"I also don't doubt that those who advocate gay marriage are advocating a revision of the Christian tradition," Dudley boldly asserted.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Why is the Biblical position on gay marriage fallacious? Dudley's first argument is that St. Paul condemns homosexual relations as "unnatural," but later preaches that long hair is naturally degrading for men, but is women's glory. Hence, he condemns both long hair and homosexuality as "unnormal," but today's Christian church would only condemn homosexuality – therefore today's Evangelical Christians are hypocritical.

Do you follow his logic here? The rest of the post follows in a similar pattern. Dudley finds Bible verses or random teachings by Church Fathers to buttress his position, which is that beliefs and practices that were condemned or allowed in the early Christian church are not so today, and so today's Christians are not pro-tradition though they might like to think so.

And apparently abortion was a part of the Christian tradition for 1900 years – contrary to popular opinion. Dudley used two isolated philosophical positions by Church Fathers (St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas) as "proof" that the early and medieval Christian church widely did not believe that life begins at conception.

Yes, Dudley uses two opinions that the human soul might not be present at the moment of conception to deduce that today's pro-life Christians are at odds with Christian "tradition" on the matter of abortion.

Such battering of today's Christians and shallow interpretation of Biblical teaching is nothing new on CNN's Belief Blog, however. CNN's Don Lemon, who declared last month that he is gay, confessed in a May 22 post how he "learned to stop 'praying away the gay'." Back in February, Jennifer Knust wrote on the Bible's "mixed messages on sexuality."

So tired of the libs'

tissue-thin arguments from Bible verses they pick and choose to try to make a case. They haul out the old "David and Jonathan were gay" BS time after time after time, no matter how many times it's shown to be a ridiculous argument.

And using Paul's admonition to the church at Corinth regarding how hair should be worn (in recognition and instruction of the relationships between God, Christ, husbands, and wives) in comparison to today's fashions as a supposed contradiction in Christian teaching is also absurd.

They can't seem to learn:  a text out of context is nothing but a pretext.

Neither can they separate

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 06/21/2011 - 6:40pm.

Neither can they separate those teachings of Paul which came from God from those which were Paul's own opinion, and/or based upon the prevalent culture at that time.

No, thanks, Matt. Not going

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 06/21/2011 - 6:38pm.

No, thanks, Matt. Not going to read the entire piece. I've had more than enough of it here.

Like with the constitution, liberals will always find a sentence in the Bible, or even a "penumbra" to justify their wishes.  It has no significance to me.

I'm still waiting for their proof that Jesus was really a  "more taxes, to take care of the poor" liberal.

Too many holes

in his argument to address, and I would only be preaching to the choir, but come on!

"In Romans 1, the only passage in the Bible where a reason is explicitly given for opposing same-sex relations, the Apostle Paul calls them "unnatural."

Well, does he not know that Paul was referencing what God had said in Leviticus 18:22? Or does Mr. Dudley only acknowledge the New Testament as the Bible?

Furthermore, most of his specious argument is based on what MEN have said throughout history, ones not inspired by the Holy One.
"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ." Col. 2:8

The Bible condemns

Submitted by okie-pastor on Wed, 06/22/2011 - 10:30am.

The Bible condemns homosexuality as an abomination.

I Corinthians 6:9,10 says that along with murderers and liars, they will NOT inherit the kingdom of God.

Progressives are naturally opposed to biblical teaching. They want to "progress" past traditional mores, values, and standards. They see these things as holding them back from enjoying their lives.

What's interesting to me, is that progressivism and satanism share the same theme: "Do what thou wilt". In other words, do what ever feels good to you and don't feel guilty about it. Even if others consider them immoral or sinful.

These people can't find God for the same reason a thief can't find a police station

Condem - Crucify !

Submitted by GaybyGod on Wed, 06/22/2011 - 1:04pm.

Jesus loves all of us.

He died for our hateful ways!

Those who comment against their Gay brothers and sisters in a condescending, "holier than thou" attitude, will eventually feel what it like to have the same.

God created Gays for Gods reason. Curb the world's over population, find loving parents for children abandoned by straights. We need to trust in God's plan. How you condemn me without ever walked in my shoes. My TRUTH to you is: I was born Gay. I say that with conviction, and in the name of Jesus Christ!

If you have any issues from this point on, take it up with my creator, GOD.
I love life. I am and have been blessed with constant miracles since I accepted myself as the Gay man God created me to be. Prior to that I was a self hating person who only cared about what others thought of me.

Someday you too will discover you had or have Gay children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. What one sows, so shall they reap.

We can ALL work together, both Gay and straight to find solutions for our nation's problems like poverty, starvation, and homelessness.

Hateful? Condem - Crucify? That would be the left to the right

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Wed, 06/22/2011 - 5:11pm.

Hateful? Condem - Crucify? That would be what the left does to the right, particularly if they espouse to be a conservative Christian that actually believes the Bible (think Sarah Palin). I am not feeling the love. So what is your proof it is not a choice to have homosexual sex? What is your proof you were born that way. Many millions of tax dollars were likely granted on studies to prove "born that way" and NO gene was found.

GaybyGod: snip "Those who comment against their Gay brothers and sisters in a condescending, "holier than thou" attitude, will eventually feel what it like to have the same."

God wants you to judge behavior. You are suppose to judge your own behavior (!), but now, homosexuals want their proven bad choices to be taught as good! That is being "holier than thou" right there! You THINK you know better but it is by your own "revelation." That is when we are stepping in, and because we love you also. To be quiet would not show love. And you should care what God thinks of your behavior.

2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17: so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." http://carm.org/christianity/sermons/2-timothy-316-all-scripture-inspired

Note the word "righteousness;" SEE your are supposed to make an ATTEMPT to do what is right. We all fall short, but that does not mean you deliberately excuse what feels good. I think King David tried to do that with Bathsheba & that part did not work out so well. He fully repented when he was confronted by the prophet, yet was strongly punished.

GaybyGod: snip: "will eventually feel what it like to have the same."

I guess that is from the special protected class of homosexual laws you are currently passing? Trying to remove freedom of speech and religion? Yes that is not judgmental? Note they are not Constitutional. I can see why you want us to sit down and shut up. We are not dangerous but your undermining of society is. What is the domestic violence rate in homosexual relationships? What is the HIV rate? What is the suicide rate? What is the drug & alcohol abuse rate?

And you want kids to choose that LIFE STYLE? It is a choice, a bad choice. It is not good for society! Proven FACT! We are not trying to stop you, but don't expect us to condone it anymore than adultery, swinging, etc.

And it is NOT in Bible, PROVEN FACT!

irrational blathering

Submitted by NL207 on Sun, 07/10/2011 - 4:10am.

"God created Gays for Gods reason"

Obviously you've never read the Bible with any comprehension. It roundly condemns homosexuality in many passages. The Bible is the inspired Word of God. You claim that homosexuality was created by God, yet the Word of God makes it quite clear that homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God, a part of the lies, rebellion and corruption of the flesh spawned by the fallen Archangel of Light, Lucifer.

Genesis says God created sex for two reasons. (1) Procreation and (2) That husband and wife might give one another the pleasure of their company. I Corinthians 7:1-2 says God created marriage to prevent fornication. God explicitly prohibits sex under all circumstances save husband-and-wife marriage. Sex as intended by God is a divine gift.

Lucifer took the divine gift of sex and perverted it to fornication, bestiality, incest, rape and sodomy : temptations to lure men to their spiritual doom. Congratulations. You are doomed. You doubt this? I Corinthians 6:9-10 calls out homosexuals as among the damned. God did not create any gays. Satan perverted some of God's creations into homosexuals.
