Scarborough Jokes: Will 'Talk Radio' Conservatives Blame Obama for Aguilera's Poor National Anthem Performance?
During a Monday morning recap of the Super Bowl, "Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough asked, tongue-in-cheek, if "right-wing, talk radio conservatives" would blame President Obama for the ghastly national anthem performance by four-time Grammy winner Christina Aguilera.
Amidst the light-hearted banter, Scarborough turned serious and asked "when we talked about what's driving the week – will conservatives, will conservatives – right-wing, talk radio conservatives – blame Barack Obama for Christina Aguilera defacing the national anthem?"
Time magazine's Mark Halperin, and co-host Willie Geist played along. "Glenn Beck's got the chalkboard going right now," Scarborough continued. "With the dotted line," Halperin added. "He's ready," chimed in Geist.
Halperin then brought up the interview of President Obama by Fox News' Bill O'Reilly. Halperin brought up O'Reilly's last question of the interview, "Does it disturb you that so many people hate you?"
Scarborough responded "Did O'Reilly ask Obama that? Or did Obama ask O'Reilly that?" to laughter from the panel. "They said it at the same time. And then O'Reilly shouted out 'Jinx!'" answered Halperin.
A transcript of the segment, which aired on February 7 at 6:04 a.m. EST, is as follows:
JOE SCARBOROUGH: I want to ask you, though, when we talked about what's driving the week – will conservatives, will conservatives – right-wing, talk radio conservatives – blame Barack Obama for Christina Aguilera defacing the national anthem?
MARK HALPERIN: Pretty much, like –
SCARBOROUGH: Yeah. Glenn Beck's got the chalkboard going right now.
HALPERIN: With the dotted line.
WILLIE GEIST: He's ready.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: And Obama and O'Reilly. That you guys –
HALPERIN: The last question of the interview? Yeah? "Does it bother you that so many people hate you?"
(Laughter)
SCARBOROUGH: Wait, wait a second. I didn't see it.
Prof. STEPHEN CARTER, Yale Law School: It was a great answer.
GEIST: It was.
CARTER: He had a great answer.
SCARBOROUGH: I didn't see it. Did O'Reilly ask Obama that? Or did Obama ask O'Reilly that?
(Laughter)
HALPERIN: They both – they said it at the same time. And then O'Reilly shouted out "Jinx!"

Amazing how blind jealousy

Amazing how blind jealousy can make a person seem so very small.
Joe my friend, you should look around a bit. You have NO friends left in the Republican party, you are USED daily by your democrat network MSDNC, O'Reilly has a larger staff than you have viewers and your only true supporter is a silicone implanted moron who has perfected the art of moving her mouth without your hand being inserted in her back.
It's Not Blind Jealousy

Scarborough has sold his ideology for "big bucks" to host a show where leftists get 3 hours to spew their agenda. I take that back, after all Joey doesn't earn anything close to Rush or Sean. He really sold out conservatism so he can get all those emails and text messages from the Press Office at the WH. What's truly laughable, he believes he's one of the last true conservatives, like former SoS Powell.
Was it bad?

Personally I didn't think the performance was that bad. She got the words right after all.

Excuse me?
"O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last [unintelligible].”
That fourth line was supposed to be: "O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming."
Please tell me in what universe "She got the words right after all." ?
Apparently I don't know the words either

Or else I wasn't paying close enough attention.
Or I had already too much to drink during the 16 hour pre-show.

Given more and more of those singing the National Anthem make it about them instead of the song, I went with the bet that she'd screw up the lyrics. Easy money.

Mark Steyn commented that there's some sort of grammy for making a one syllable word count for fourteen syllables...hence the inevitable blunder. Kind of true and very funny.
Shows you what I know, I thought Aguilera was from Columbia or somesuch, nope, turns out she was born in New York.
It's inexcusable. Totally inexcusable.

And the way these "artists" kind of jerk their heads around as they are singing those fourteen syllables just adds to the annoyance factor.

I was saying, on another thread, how sick I am - and have been for a long time - of hearing these 'artists' and 'singers' OVERSING and OVERDRAMATIZE every damn note and word and syllable and sound in ANY song that they perform!!! Jeez, it drives me nuts!!! There is no finesse, no style, no approach..........it's just 'showcasing their pipes' in an attempt to prove that they can hit more syllables than the next guy or gal. God..............it's irritating!!!
Oh..........and as for blaming Boy Barry for the poor performance - he gets a pass, because I don't think he likes our National Anthem - hell, somebody had to MAKE him put his hand over his heart when they were playing it not too long ago - and he probably doesn't know the words either. Personally, I like 'American the Beautiful' a WHOLE lot better!!!
And, speaking of poor performances............what was with those black-eyed peas, or hominy grits, or collard greens, or whatever the hell those so-called entertainers were called??? And I thought the WHO sucked!!! You want some good half-time entertainment??? Get James Brown!! Oh, wait.........he's dead. OK........get Prince..........get ANYBODY who can play, sing, AND put on a show all at the same time - LIVE!!!! That pretty much narrows the field, doesn't it???
You're right BuffNBone

You're absolutely right about that. It drives me crazy when singers turn the National Anthem into an ego-fest. Granted, "The Star-Spangled Banner" is tricky to sing, but it is not a country tune, pop ballad or soul song. It is a march, pure and simple. I cringe when a pinheaded pop "star" is given the task at the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup Final, etc. Disasters such as last night's are almost inevitable.
And speaking of the "Star-Spangled Banner", did you know that there are actually four stanzas to it? Here is one of the other stanzas, the one that could drive ACLU-types nuts:
Oh thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just
And this be our motto: In God is our trust!
Then the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
No Joe, we will not blame

No Joe, we will not blame Obama for the Star Mangled Banner (hat tip Weasel Zippers). We will blame the dumbing down of American youth by the Education system that you liberals have destroyed.

I'm a little more charitable than most on this issue. My daughter skipped a whole section of an opera aria in a high school recital. Fortunately, her accompanist was able to "cover" for her mistake, so only those familiar with the aria knew what had happened.
Joe IS looking more and more bitter daily. He laughed at A-Rod for being "whipped," but Joe seems to be projecting on that one.
Aguilera is a professional
Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 7:22pm.
Aguilera is a professional and probably got paid for it, paid a buch. Your kid is excusable but a performance at the super bowl is not. She only did a small portion and the song i well known to be hard to sing so practice was in order. I don't like Agulera anyways but what she did was disgraceful. Heck even Jimmie did the Star Spangled banner right. I like Jimmies version.
Point taken!
Submitted by TexasMom0517 on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 7:52pm.
When "pop" singers screw around with ornamentation on the Star Spangled Banner, they get in trouble with the words- plus, let's face it, most are lazy and hugely overpaid.

It was Anthropogenic Global Warming caused by racism and bovine flatulence in and near Dallas. And the Zionists who own Walmart and send all our jobs to Indonesia and make small children work 27 hours a day for 17 cents. And Rush Limbaugh, too.

It's not like she was asked to sing the Kazakhstan national anthem.
Just sing the darn thing like it was written and ditch all the caterwauling, yodeling and weirdass personal interpretations...it NEVER works out.
Why can't they get they grasp this simple concept?
If it was up to me, I'd wire anybody who is to sing it with a C-4 charge on their butt - you start deviating, bang, zoom.

I'll take America the Beautiful ANY DAY over the Star Spangled Banner - for words, content, music, listenability, and ease of delivery. The Genius Ray Charles did a great job of it, and I'm sure that a lot of other singers do it well too...............just as long as it's not some overwrought, overdramatic, oversung rendition!!!
