Morning Joe Crew: GOP House Vote to Repeal ObamaCare Is a Meaningless 'Waste of Time'
Monday's "Morning Joe" panel on MSNBC mocked the House Republicans' plan to vote to repeal President Obama's health care legislation in full. "Waste of time" and "meaningless legislative exercise" were some of the phrases used to describe the first announced GOP priority.
"It's going to take them fifteen minutes, they're going to vote to repeal it, and the Senate's not going to do it," explained co-host Joe Scarborough. "It is a meaningless legislative exercise, but you know what? The base will like it."
"Republicans in Washington are planning to waste some time. Is anyone surprised by that?" co-host Mika Brzezinski tersely introduced the segment in the 7 a.m. EDT news hour.
Both Scarborough and Brzezinski sarcastically mocked the plan. "Good for them. Thank you," Brzezinski spat. "You are big men," she derided the House Republicans. "You so tough," Scarborough chimed in, followed by Brzezinski making strange growling noises.
Brzezinski added that even the conservative base won't be proud of this effort. "People are sick of this stuff going on, useless time spent in Washington when we should be moving forward," she echoed the recent theme of MSNBC, "Lean Forward."
Columnist Mike Barnicle ridiculed such plans to repeal ObamaCare and raise the debt ceiling as "meaningless stuff." He contrasted such an absurd view of government with what he dubbed a "real-world" view, which included snow removal, trash collection, and police protection.
However, National Journal correspondent Major Garrett answered to the contrary on the subject of raising the debt ceiling, which he deemed an important issue. "I would say the debt ceiling is going to be very real," he responded, calling it a "huge vote."
A transcript of the segments, which aired on January 3 at 6:13 a.m. and 7:10 a.m. EDT respectively, is as follows:
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Alright, so they want to do this before the State of the Union, they want to at least bring it up for a vote in the House, I mean, they're not going to have the votes in the Senate. Is it a waste of time? What is going on?
JOE SCARBOROUGH: You know, to quote Sheryl Crow, if it makes you happy, it can't be that bad, because it's – (Crosstalk) – it's going to take them fifteen minutes, they're going to vote to repeal it, and the Senate's not going to do it.
BRZEZINSKI: Good for them. Thank you.
SCARBOROUGH: Yay, maybe they can throw some confetti.
BRZEZINSKI: You are big men.
(Laughter)
SCARBOROUGH: You so tough.
BRZEZINSKI: Oooooh, arrrrrgh.
SCARBOROUGH: But seriously, it is a meaningless legislative exercise, but you know what? But the base will like it.
BRZEZINSKI: No. Actually people are sick of this stuff going on, useless time spent in Washington when we should be moving forward.
SCARBOROUGH: It's like the cap-and-trade bill the Democrats passed, they knew it was never going to get through the Senate. They passed it anyway, so they could go back to their base saying "We're fighting for you!"
MSNBC MORNING JOE 1/3/11 7:10 a.m.-7:16 a.m. EDT
BRZEZINSKI: Alright, Republicans in Washington are planning to waste some time. Is anyone surprised by that?
SCARBOROUGH: C'mon.
JON MEACHAM, PBS "Need to Know" co-host: Is that the AP headline?
BRZEZINSKI: They're going to vote – they plan to vote on repealing the White House's health care legislation shortly after Congress returns this week. Leading the charge: Fred Upton, the incoming chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee who says he thinks the House is near the majority needed to override a veto.
(...)
SCARBOROUGH: Major Garrett, obviously they will never get this through the Senate, even if it passes the House. Why are they doing it?
(...)
BARNICLE: You know what's interesting, listening to the conversation of the last five minutes – the two different views of government now colliding. One the real-world view of government, snow removal, trash collection, police protection. The other view of government, the meaningless view of government in most people's minds our of Washington – are we going to raise the debt ceiling? Are we going to, you know, vote to --
BRZEZINSKI: Repeal ObamaCare –
BARNICLE: Repeal ObamaCare. Meaningless stuff. Meaningless stuff verses real stuff.
MAJOR GARRETT, National Journal correspondent: I would say the debt ceiling is going to be very real.
BRZEZINSKI: In a couple of months.
GARRETT: That's a huge vote. And that's altogether real.

Their just beside themselves with contempt simply because they gambled on putting all their eggs in one basket ( Obama ) and now their miserable little world is coming to an end.
If you listen closely to their morning zoo regulars banter back & forth, you'll realize, when they forget the talking points and go off script, they now have almost as much contempt for Obama and the dems as they do conservatives and the American people.......it's comical to watch them walk it back once they catch themselves......or Mika cuts them off mid sentence.

Voting to repeal ObamaCare may be purely symbolic, but at least it lets the Comrade Chairman know they are serious about putting an end to this farce of a law, along with most everything else this fraud has done over the last two years which, if left unmolested and fully funded, will push this nation over the cliff in very short order.
And perhaps more importantly, it lets us know they are serious, as well.

In 1995 I knew that the Republicans voted in in 1994 were NOT serious when they faild to defund NEA.
National Endowment for the Arts was an unimportant expendeture if Federal Funds. And they couldn't cut it off.
The real test will come when it's time to Defund NPR/PBS. Will they be albe to cut off the funds?
If they are serious they will.
A second show of how serious Republicans were came when they showed their 'Phony' resolve regarding ANWR. They had no trouble passing legislation to open ANWR to drilling when they knew Clinton would veto it. So they did and he did.
But when they had Bush who would have signed the legislation? Nada!
They need to Get Serious and Be Serious when it counts. Because it all counts now.

The Constitution is the agreement by which Congress has any authority at all. It is the "warrant" that defines what Congress may or may not do, and without that agreement, the Congress doesn't have enough authority to rename a library.
The previous Congress acted as if they had authority independent of the people, and they were empowered to act (and spend) without restraint. The purpose of reading the Constitution is to assure the people that Congress will once again honor that agreement.
Look, if the Democrats can celebrate the passing of their healthcare bill by strutting through the streets of the Capitol, I find it odd that they object to reading the text of the Constitution as a way to symbolically start off this new session.

of this band of network nitwits chiding others about "wasting time" is astonishing. I wonder if they ever watch their own shows on tape. Morning JOE is a collasal waste of time, money and airtime. Joe had his time in the floodlights and now he seems a little petty and jealous if not sophomoric busting the efforts of freshmen congressmen trying to do what the People want them to do. If this were the ONLY thing that was being done to undo the ObamaCare laws they might have an ounce of credibility but they also plan to dismantle it piece by piece, defund it and also fight it in the courts all the way to the SC if necessary. I hope Joe reads this because he is such a huge disappointment to the folks back home in Pensacola. His true colors show through and I doubt Joe could get elected to street sweeper anymore.

So what show would you rather watch during that time slot? The blatant--bordering on cartoonish--bias of Fox & Friends renders it virtually unwatchable. Would you prefer the liberal-oriented fluff of the network morning shows? At least Scarborough provides a modicum of balance. Hardly a day passes that he isn't hammering Democrats--generally over their promiscuous spending habits.

Honestly, I get up and make a pot of pu-erh tea (better for me than coffee) and I read Drudge while it steeps. I pour the first cup and dig into the NewsBusters that came in since I went to bed. I pour another cup while working through HotAir. I pour the rest into a travel mug and then drive to work, where I earn a living for my family and the governments (federal, state, county, and city) that take income and other taxes from me. I don't need Morning Joe, since NewsBusters tells me if anything important happened over there. Usually it passes without attention.neutron...

I like your taste in beverages-- I drink either green tea or acai juice daily and also take a green tea/acai extract tablet nightly--but your taste in information consumption is questionable. Personally, I prefer a bit more ideological diversity in my news/commentary/opinion sources. That's why Morning Joe is on my menu. In the vast majority of cases NB only picks out the instances where Joe has criticized a conservative or praised a Democrat and ignores the numerous occasions where he is slamming libs. A few weeks ago Scarborough launched into a five-minute blistering tirade against the lefty/progressives who were criticizing the CIA's interrogation tactics, after which he made a very brief negative comment about a Republican. As usual, NewsBusters omitted any and all reference to the tirade against the libs, but made the quip about the Republican the subject of yet another anti-Scarborough blog. It's little wonder you and others here believe he's become nothing more than a liberal flack.

I don't doubt that you watch Morning Joe--perhaps even more than I. But I also believe you are seriously understating the frequency with which he "acts/sounds like a conservative". There is rarely a morning when I tune in [roughly three times a week] that Scarborough doesn't sound precisely and emphatically like a conservative, at least at some point in the show.
That said, he admits that his strident partisanship of the 90's has been considerably moderated. He is not shy about criticizing members of his own party or praising Democrats. But he insists his core conservative principles remain the same as two decades ago when he characterized himself as a Reagan Republican [and still identifies himself as one]. And I have seen and continue to see plenty of evidence of that fact. But, it's simply not reported by NewsBusters for reasons which I believe are rooted in a desire to portray MSNBC as a network with virtually no conservative input. Consequently, every single instance of Joe making a complimentary remark about Obama or Joe Biden or some other Democrat is inevitably and eagerly blogged about, while the tirades against the left and liberal spending and taxing and big government policies, his skewering of progressives on national security issues, his effusive praise of Chris Christie and scores of other Republicans, and countless additional examples of his conservative bona fides are all largely ignored because doing otherwise would undercut the narrative being advanced.

It's true, Joe will show it - it's just that the times he should, he goes along to get along or something, and that's when NB posts.
Most of the time, it's gratifying to hear him speak to what I believe, but I guess him being on the inside has made him so cynical he tears down the R's far more than the D's
The others on the show are usually left or far left, and what they say - that Joe goes along with - is what makes it worthy of a thread.
I know people are fallible, and that Joe is usually the lone voice of reason, but around TRUE conservatives, he'd be challenged to hold his own.
That said - did you catch him yesterday going after public service unions? music to my ears!!! If it's on MJ, maybe they will finally end this crap!!!

I just caught the first segments of yesterday's show--regarding spending, taxes, and the national debt--and Joe sounded like he could have been delivering the keynote address at the next CPAC convention. [Praising Jim Demint for demanding spending reduction proposals before agreeing to increasing the debt ceiling...endorsing Cuomo's statement about not raising taxes on anybody, including the very wealthy, and concentrating on curbing spending...explaining how small businesses which are grossing high revenues are benefitting the employees making $40-50 thousand and how hiking taxes on those businesses would be disastrous, etc.]
But NONE of that gets reported here, and so we have posters saying "hey, I don't need to watch that show. NB tells me all I need to know about MorningSchmo and it's obvious he's a lefty."
NewsBusters does a lot of good work exposing real liberal bias, but the ideological hit job they are performing on Scarborough is irresponsible.

Submitted by neutron on Mon, 01/03/2011 - 10:04pm.
No, Joe, a vote to repeal Obamacare is NOT a "Waste of time" ! It's a basic political stategy. The majority of the voting public is against Obamacare, so, for the 2012, the Republicans want to get it on the record:
Step 1: Pass an Obamacare repeal in the House.
Outcome A: Senate does not pass it. The Senators who voted against it will be targeted in the primary and / or the general election. Republicans will use Democrat opposition of the will of the people against them and against Obama in 2012.
Outcome B: The Senate passes a comparable repeal of Obamacare that is reconciled and sent up.
Obvious Result: Obama vetos it. Republicans will use his overruling of the will of the people against him in 2012.
Plan B Outcome 1: The Democrat Senators that refuse to join in an override of Obama's veto will be marked for defeat in the next general election.
Plan B Outcome 2: Democrat Senators join with Republican Senators to override Obama's veto.
I'm a voter with NO party affiliation, and I can follow the game theory plays. I guess Old Joe didn't learn any game plays when he was in Congress or since joining the LameStream Media. Or maybe he knows the reality, but owes his soul to the ones to whom he sold out.
An excellent assessment, neutron
Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 01/04/2011 - 2:23pm.
Since the health care reform bill passed the House by only 7 votes, and the voters have since expressed their dismay in the November elections, the Democratic Party genuinely fears that moderate Dem Representatives will vote to repeal, making the Left and Obama look stupid and isolated.
Let the Senate refuse to bring up repeal -- it will burn them in 2012.
Let Obama veto the repeal of his crowning achievement -- he will look petty and out of touch.
And if some Republicans vote against repea, let them face their constituents and possible Tea Party challenges in 2012.
The GOP has everything to gain politically by this.

The public does want some healthcare reform.
The Republicans need to pick out some of these issues and craft a bill that satifies the will of the people and is constitutional and affordable.
Even if a new bill merely copies something in obamacare it will do two things 1. It will force congressmen and senators to vote for or against something the public wants and 2. It will make repeal of obamacare easier because the popular items will already be preserved.

You passed it anyhow, and kept passing it, and guess what? It HAPPENED! Weren't you part of that Congress, Joe? Or maybe you were one of the naysayers, saying it couldn't be passed?
I am tired of the cognoscenti (and I use that term disparagingly on ignorant people like you and Mika, Joe) that don't remember history, that are instead going to use their bully pulpit to try to dissuade this. I am tired of people like you, Steve Israel, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and the rest of the Obamalovers out there trying to seed hoplessness. Israel thinks 2012 will be "buyers remorse". He doesn't recognize that is what November 2, 2010 was, and that it will happen again unless the Republicans get this budget under control?
I expect this House to pass a $0 budget for Health Care (I would do it for DHHS until the Secretary came down to Congress to agree with what the Department would NOT try to fund through the back door) as well as a weekly bill to repeal this sucker. I would keep going, not doing ANY business other than a monthly CR, until both the Senate and the President gave in. I would do the same thing on the EPA Budget until Lisa Jackson got down off her high horse and understood that she does not have the authority to regulate carbon.
The Republicans tried to negotiate and you shut them out. "Elections have consequences" is what we heard from the President. Well, guess what, yes, this one did. And the consequence is that your binge of spending like the President of Zimbabwe is over. The bill is here. And it is time to be paid.

Bring the matter for a vote on a weekly basis until it passes. The GOP that was not thrown out and all Democrats will do well to listen to we the people. Do not pass a damned thing until Obamacare is repealed lock, stock and barrel without any weaselly language in there. A simple paragraph that says all provisions of the law are null and void. This will get rid of all the earmarks also.

Sure, Fox and Friends is no masterpiece theater, or a TV version of Scientific American. However, the center-right milquetoast conservatism of the show is so far removed from the garish theater of leftist vulgarity that is MSNBC and Morning Joe.
Joe long ago sold his conservative soul for a lousy buck on MSNBC. Every blue moon he will chastise a liberal, but any sane person can see who is paying his meal ticket. His turncoat antics, the Zbigniew idiot spawn, and a whole host of leftist losers, nutjobs, and NY liberal goons make this one of the most biased shows on the network.....however, given MSNBC's rabid liberalism.......it is the networks's most "center" show.
Sorry, your jab at Kilmeade and friends on Fox morning is nothing more than projection....

Boo hoo. Obama has turned out to be a miserable failure and the democrats are not even completely over their elation with the inauguration yet. They back-stabbed Hillary for this yahoo? Oh, and now they want to attack the Republican's for "playing politics". It isn't "playing politics," it is halting Obama's socialist agenda which begins with Obamacare.

I've stated before in this website that NONE of this BHO bilge is a manner of incompetence or miscalculation, but a steady, laid-on foray to shove this country into dictatorship and destruction. Rodham's purpose is to take it to conclusion, with many folk reasoning(?!) that she's a better go of it than more BHO.
The next two years will be the Thermopylae for freedom in this hemisphere. The GOP is the Spartans, BHO etc Xerxes and the Persians. Graham, the Maine Twins, McCain, and any other RINO are our Ephialtes.
And in so saying, I will probably have made their $#!+ list.

Joe sided with the Congressional Republicans who opposed the tax deal and generally embraced the Tea Party position [i.e. also opposition because of additional spending' with respect to the compromise bill.] So, I'll defer to your expertise. Was this a RINO stance or a conservative stance which Scarborough took?

And while you are trying to make light of it, I am in agreement in toto with that last part of Reagen's "Rendezvous with Destiny".
A two term BHO or BHO and Rodham will pretty much finish off the last of the American experiment in constutuional republicanism. The two hundred-plus years of light in the darkness of history will be extinguished, with nothing to take its place but statist boots stamping in the faces of humanity...forever.

You may recall that over the past couple of years more than a few at this website had predicted Obama would cancel the 2010 elections as part of a dark totalitarian plot which included a suspension of the Constitution, deployment of his private army to round up and incarcerate in concentration camps situated in various western locales hundreds of thousands of conservative "enemies of the state", culminating in the imposition of a permanent autocratic tyranny. As you may have guessed, I was always a bit skeptical...
just as I am of the potentiality of your winding up on a $%&* list due to your stirring anti-statist musings in a previous post, if for no other reason than--as you reminded me on another thread--your present status as a non-member of a legislative body renders what you say absolutely meaningless.

I should have repaired my statement with the additional phrase "in the process of legislation", but, alas, one cannot unring the bell. Unlike yourself (in large part) and your comrades, I will admit to fallibility and error.
As to the past couple of years, your hac- err investigation of my account will disclose that I have been here slightly over one year. That others might have considered the possibility of deleted elections is no surprise given how the statists have mucked around.
When, at my workplace, rumor of a quarterly bonus circulates, I tell everyone that asks if I have heard of it, "Yes, and I'll believe it, not when I get the check, but when I'm spending it."
Horridly cynical.
I will be treating my franchise as I always have, with great reverence, but additionally with the above noted cynicism as to its durability, as long as such as BHO are in OUR White House.
Tell ya what. If both houses pass an omnibus status quo ante 2009 repeal and BHO signs it, I'll be less cynical.

The world we're heading for - I don't care if it's tomorrow, a year or 100 years from now, if things like Obamacare are allowed to stand - will be a dark frightening place where freedom is too expensive and in all likelyhood most of the people in it - will resemble the fictitious Eloy characters from "The Time Machine". I think it's very likely this will happen, if we don't wake up. The Morning Joe's hosts ignorance - if that's what it is - is inexcusable.
More people should read George Orwell, and H. G. Wells, and not watch "Morning Joe"
Taking another vote...
Submitted by GG_NB on Tue, 01/04/2011 - 11:58am.
is a smart thing to do. Republicans are doing what they were asked to do in the November elections. It's also wise to get a new, post-election count and to pin representatives down.
Democrats who are now well aware that their constituents were not happy with their vote last time and are up for re-election in 2012 will be on record. In addition to seeing if any "yes" votes now favor repeal, there is another group to look at carefully -- Democrats who voted "no" on the bill the first go-around who may vote against repeal. If any in this group vote "no" for repeal after voting "no" on the bill, it seems reasonable to believe that this group of Dems either: 1) will now cast a purely political vote, abandoning their original concerns for the sake of party, which is telling (i.e., Daniel Lipinski (D-ILL) -- who comes from a largely Catholic district and voted "no" on the bill because of concerns on taxpayer-funded abortion and now indicates he will vote against repeal or 2) were Dems given cover by Pelosi in the original vote because they didn't want to anger a constituent base that was against it. So voters will have another chance to see if their reps are listening to them -- or if it's just politics as usual.
There also needs to be discussion on the specifics in this bill. Americans need to be informed on it, having never been given a chance to do so. It's equally important for momentum to kick this thing (all the way to the Supreme Court) and also to inform people on why Republicans will try to de-fund it. All of these things highlight what Obama pushed through against the will of the majority: a screwy mess. In a variety of ways, it helps set the stage for 2012.
And gee, you'd think that Democrats would think this is a good use of time -- after all, isn't it a wonderful chance to inspect the bill and see how "great" it is? Isn't it a good use of time to reassure the majority of Americans who oppose Obamacare just how beneficial it really is and reaffirm how wisely, thoughtfully and fairly it was passed? Isn't that important to you -- hmmmmm, Democrats?

The Democrats have already
Submitted by Hunter12 on Tue, 01/04/2011 - 1:11pm.
The Democrats have already made up their campaign commercials for 2012 after those staged votes to split out the tax cuts for those making more than $250,000 from the rest of the cuts and for the unemplyment extensions: "Republicans are just for the rich!". This is similar to the meme they used to force granting housing loans to people who couldn't repay them: "The Republicans don't want you to share in the American dream!". We've seen the destruction that two solid years of Democrat control has done to the country and we know that all the current problems with the economy can be traced directly to Barney and Maxine playing to the something-for-nothing crowd for votes.
In case anyone wants to look at what's inside the healthcare bill, here are one or two links. The Dims don't want it reviewed, because it is their only chance to regain power. Those "Community-Based" groups (think ACORN) we're going to pay to sit in clinics and such are going to registering voters, legal or not.
