NBC Sports Speculates: GOP Victory In Minnesota Could Cause NFL's Vikings To Move

By Matt Hadro | November 04, 2010 | 18:19

A  A

Not even NBC Sports could stay out of politics the day after the election, on what must have been a slow NFL news day. The provocative headline "Republican Tidal Wave Could Carry Vikings To L.A." was featured prominently on NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk.com Wednesday.

This speculation by Mike Florio of NBC Sports detailed a possible domino effect brought about by the Minnesota state legislature going Republican for the first time in 38 years. Florio warned that the NFL's Minnesota Vikings may leave town if they cannot get public funding for a new stadium, since their lease on their current stadium expires after this season.

"Generally speaking, Republicans favor limited government and low taxes," Florio explained. "One of the ways to keep taxes low is to avoid undertaking significant spending programs that in the view of some constitute a handout for a private enterprise."

He then quoted a Republican senator-elect saying the budget is the number one priority for the GOP. Thus, a new stadium will be a low priority for public funding, and so the Minnesota Vikings will find themselves without a home after this season, which, in the current climate of cities like Los Angeles and London being considered for an NFL team, would catapult the Vikings into the status of the NFL team likely to leave town.

See how that all worked out? Are you scared now, Minnesota fans? Leave it to NBC Sports reporters to act as (liberal) political analysts on a slow news day.

Submitted by MidAmerica on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 6:31pm.

So it's a vital public responsibility for a private corporation to receive taxpayer dollars when other areas of the states budget are being cut?

IF building a new stadium is financially possible and there is a positive financial return for having a new stadium then I'm for it but if it's a net loss there is no reason why taxpayers have to subsidize it.  If they want to present a referendom to the voters and they approve then that's OK too.

First, the House Un-American

Submitted by stratman on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 7:06pm.

First, the House Un-American Activities Committee was correct - the Left has infiltrated multiple sectors of American society.

Second, is borrowing more money, such that foreign investors like China own more and more of America, better?

This is not news.  Rumors of the Vikings leaving Minnesota over a new stadium have long been suspected, well before this election cycle.  If the tax payers don't want to pay for a new stadium at the risk of losing their team, it should be their choice.  The fans of several teams around the league fear the same.

Vet,

Submitted by ForeverOnTheRight on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 11:29am.

Vet in this case DK is not off the mark. I live in Minnesota and I just don't understand why on earth Minnesotans are so wiling to pay for a Twins and Timberwolves stadium but have always fought against a Vikings stadium. They just don't get the economic impact of their leaving. But then again we have too often gone Democratic in presidential elections, there are a lot of lefty nuts here!

No, Vet.  Does a dog lash out when he has fleas?  No, he itches a lot, but he doesn't go berserk.  Rabies would do that.

Oh Goody....the Humpty Dumpty Dome will be Available

....for the Super Bowl...since the "committee" had deemed Joe Robbie Stadium no longer sufficiently fancy enough without a $650 million renovation.

Say what?

These sports teams and their stadiums are worse than unions, IMO.

Notice I still call it Joe Robbie Stadium, because Mr. Robbie paid for it himself when he built it.

Oh here's a little sports tip for NBC Sports.  Since, you know, their business is supposed to be sports.  Phat Phil Fulmer is on the list of possible coaches for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.  I can't wait to see what Rick has to say about that little tidbit.

Enough already.

Submitted by nkviking75 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 8:48pm.

The people of Minnesota should be forgiven if they don't want to finance a stadium for the Vikings.  During this decade they've built a new football stadium for the U of Minnesota's Golden Gophers and the fantastic Target Field for the Minnesota Twins.  And given the Vikings' peformance this season, fans might be a lot more willing to let them go.

Football Hah!

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 9:47pm.

Listen folks, I grew up in L.A. and hated the Rams and George Allen... then I moved to St. Louis and... here come the Rams!    So long as the Vikings don't move to Arizona... I'm fine with it!

P.S. I am not a professional football fan... I'm a Cardinals fan!

Why would they go to LA or London?

Submitted by Denny Crane on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 1:57am.

Just thinking from a business point of view.

LA really high taxes.  Corporate and income.

London really high taxes.  Corprorate and income.

Why do we have to bribe NFL teams to stay in that city?
