New York Times Uses Violent Gun Metaphors: Republican Ryan A 'Point Man' Who 'Draws Fire'

By Mark Finkelstein | January 25, 2011 | 08:43

A  A

What's with the New York Times and its inability to practice what it preaches when it comes to avoiding gun-filled images and rhetoric?  A few days ago I noted how the Times had placed a bullet-riddled ad for a violent video game right on its online op-ed page.

Now comes this Times headline: "Republicans’ Budget Man Draws Fire".  That is of course a metaphorical invocation of someone who by his actions invites an enemy to shoot at him.  The article's subject was Republican congressman Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman and budget hawk who will be giving the GOP response to Pres. Obama's SOTU.  To complete the martial metaphor, the article, by Jennifer Steinhauer and David Herszenhorn, also describes Ryan as "the Republican point man" on budget cuts.  A point man is of course the soldier at the lead of a patrol, hence most likely to be shot.

Can you imagine if some Republican publication had, in these hyper-sensitive days, used such a headline about a Democrat and provided, as did the Times in the case of Ryan, a photograph of the named target?

And no, before you ask, no one at NB actually thinks the Times is fomenting violence with this sort of talk. But unlike the Gray Lady, we also extended that courtesy to Sarah Palin.

Arrogant Joe Scarborough

Submitted by cobokat on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 9:21am.

I find it amazing that an article like this can be printed in the NYT and yet all Joe Scarborough has been doing this morning is slamming Michelle Bachman over her "harsh rhetoric".  The MJ team has been on an all out lovefest for BO since 6:00am.  They are all on their high horses-how dare Michelle Bachman speak after BO tonight.  I realize they are all on team BO but this morning has topped the cake.  They think this will make BO look even better.  I think someone needs to tell Joe to stop saying he is a Fiscally Conservative Republican-he's nothing of the sort and just another hack for BO and this admnistration.

I for one invite this,

Submitted by Barack_must_go..... on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 9:33am.

I for one invite this, normal, type of political rhetoric, as I want to get back to the business at hand....making sure we Republicans / Conservatives / Tea Party folks blow what's left of the democrat party out of the water in 2012.

NYT and Medafores

Submitted by NVRAT on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 10:07am.

The NYT is probably the most disgusting paper in the US. Why anyone would buy this worthless Rag is beyond me. Journalism is not one of this papers better atributes they fall more in the line of  tabloid reporting.

The NYT stock is going into

Submitted by Hunter12 on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 11:57am.

The NYT stock is going into the toilet, so the answer to the question of why is anyone buying it is that they're not.  Their circulation is down.  I have heard that if you need to paint a room, the Sunday edition will cover the whole floor completely and is cheaper than a dropcloth.

Alinsky tactics the Dems can't give up

Submitted by TexasMom0517 on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 10:26am.

The Dems ALWAYS revert to Alinsky tactics- it's all they know.  They can't stand on their principles or they'll be rejected by We the People, so they isolate, demonize and mock their opponents.

The NY Times is a rag pretending to be "the newspaper of record" for the country.  It is as independent a source of news as Mika Brezinski is as she receives emails from the White House while she's on the air (in case she doesn't have their talking points down pat).  Civility in the media only means that the Republicans are supposed to sit down and shut up, and anyone who thinks that "Morning Joe" is a Republican probably believes that Jeff Immelt is a member of the GOP.  If you believe that, believe that I am Angelina Jolie- after all, we're both female!

I occasionally watch Scarborough get "whipped" by Mika, but I think I'll pass entirely now.  Mocking Michelle Bachmann, as Joe and Mika love to do, shows their bitterness and fear of her.  Bachmann has both a law degree and an LLM in tax from William and Mary Law School, has actually worked as an attorney(JOE???), is the mother to five children and has fostered TWENTY-THREE kids.  Yeah, Mika, that's a woman to be mocked.

The Professional Left cannot argue policy so they go after conservatives personally.

They're going to have a hard time shredding her resume

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 11:22am.

Bachman is no dummy, no matter how hard Chrissy & the rest of the MSNBC crew try to paint her as such.

She was a tax attorney, and worked for the Treasury department.  I don't know why they're attacking her credentials, other than she is a religious woman.

Even the Republican leadership is afraid of her, and I think, to their detriment, they have denied her any kind of meaningful leadership position this go round.  Mistake.

I like her "independent response" to Obama plan, tonight.  She's going to be doing RINO herding, mostly.

I truly hope Obama hammers this "civility" thing, beating it like the dead horse it is....I don't care about that at all, and neither do the voters who swept out the democrats.  WE WANT FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY, NOW.

This and etc going on

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 11:36am.

I like....well, actually, I hated the info, but I liked how Rush put it yesterday about how when the Chairman (and he's been calling him Barry Soetoro lately!) is giving useless platitudes during the SOTU show, more oil rigs will be shut down and so forth.

There has never been, in the history of the US and even by FDR himself, such a blatant attempt at destroying this country as this POSSOB has been doing.

And people still want to give him a chance???

Hell no, he doesn't even DESERVE a chance and needs to be tossed in jail and deported!

We may want fiscal responsibility, Blonde.

What we are going to get according to Valarie Jarrett are Obama's "Five Pillars" of Faith!

I can't even believe he is going to utter that phrase.

OBAMA SOTU BINGO.

Of course, we could make up our own cards.

It will be interesting to see if he actually does that.  Nothing the  man does surprises me any longer.

Why won't they?

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 11:49am.

Why won't any Republican get on the fact that he's always referring to Islamic stuff in just about everything he does like this Five Pillars of Crap?

Why isn't more exposition being done about this?

It's one thing that it's there for people to see, but they need to be made aware of it too, otherwise, we get the Cantor Syndrome of not wanting to rock the boat about certain subjects like he was about Barry's Birth Certificate.  What a wuss.

Reminds me of the PGA playoff this weekend

Submitted by Bluegill on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 11:02am.

I had to laugh because I noticed it was no longer a "Sudden Death" Playoff but just a plain playoff and the first guy out of the three was not "eliminated" instead "he won't go on"

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 11:47am.

What I want to know, is how loudly did they whisper these new terms?

That is funny, in a very sick sort of way.  And sad, too.

Give them a break, Mark.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Tue, 01/25/2011 - 11:09am.

After all, they did leave the "cross hairs" off of Ryan's photo!

Most likely that's because they don't know what the hell "cross hairs" are.  They probably think it's a description of Playboy Bunnies who are mad at Hef, but who are too dumb to spell it correctly.
