Arianna To Lieberman: 'For Sake Of Country, I Hope You Don't Become Secretary Of Defense'

By Mark Finkelstein | January 20, 2011 | 09:00

A  A

Just when Joe-mentum was building for Lieberman-Huffington '12!

Say this for Arianna Huffington: she didn't stab Joe Lieberman in the back.  On Morning Joe today, the HuffPo founder went for the full frontal assault, telling the outgoing senator to his face "I sincerely hope for the sake of the country that you do not become Secretary of Defense."

Lieberman was not defenseless, at one point condescendingly spelling out for Arianna's sake the name of the author of a report he relied on to conclude Saddam was developing WMD.  When Arianna huffed that the report proved nothing, Lieberman sniped "I don't think you've read it, sweetheart."

View video of the dust-up after the jump.

ARIANNA HUFFINGTON: It was stunning to hear you say that there was evidence that Saddam Hussein was working on weapons of mass destruction, given that even Pres. Bush himself has now accepted that there had been no evidence. So on what basis are you saying that?

JOE LIEBERMAN: I'm basing it on the so-called Duelfer Report. Charles D-U-E-L-F-E-R conducted the most comprehensive report on behalf of our government. And it was, nobody thought it was partisan.  I want to be very clear: he didn't find big caches of weapons of mass destruction. But he found, and proved I think, that Saddam had every intention, and particularly to develop nuclear weapons, was developing chemical and biological and weapons . . .

HUFFINGTON: Based on this completely unfounded assumptions, I sincerely hope for the sake of the country that you do not become Secretary of Defense.

LIEBERMAN: Now Arianna, these are not unfounded. Go read the Duelfer Report.

HUFFINGTON: There is nothing in the report that proves anything you have said.

LIEBERMAN: I don't think you've read it, sweetheart.

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 9:29am.

Joe Liberman doesn't have principles on everything.

They went out the window when he gave his speech about Clinton in the Senate.  Everyone was ga-ga,saying  that Joe pulled no punches and he  let Clinton have it between  the eyes.

However, after excoriating him, and with everyone thinking he was going to call for Clinton's resignation, Lieberman segued into a huge  "BUT......" and went on to say how all that didn't mean that Clinton wasn't and couldn't be a good president.

That was a huge disappointment.

Saddam--the monster who paid the early suicide bombers

Submitted by merly1 on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 9:25am.

The guy had to go!  Unending war conflict  since 1991, Saddam clearly harbored famous terrorists like Nidal, abbas, and yasin;  Saddam openly paid the families of SUICIDE BOMBERS, etc.   Joe knows, Arianna is a bubblehead.
The real question is why we are losing 600 soldiers a year in Afghan, when even our own estimates put Al Queda there at a few dozen terrorists.   Dont get it..........Bush did, however and widely avoided a major engagement there,,,,,,,,,

Submitted by texusmc on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 10:58am.

did Saddam do all of that but as the report points out, and that fact completely escapes these two airheads, is that he was also PURSUING nuclear weapons. Leiberman told of Huffpo that and she denied it. (because she DID NOT read the report).

Saddam DID have WMD's. The first report clearly shows that he did. granted is smaller amounts and not in the HUGE Pre-Gulfwar amounts but still had them none-the-less. He used them on the Kurds in the city of Halabja (1988). So miss Huffpo, You tell me where there are NO WMD's and yet we have evidence that Saddam had plenty. Sarin gas is a nerve agent and  single drop of sarin the size of a pinhead can kill an adult. 500 warheads that hold approx 1 gal, you do the math!.

I wish NB stop posting video of Huffington. Besides the content of her nonsensical, uneducated comments, her accent is about as appealing to listen to as the sound of nails on a blackboard to the tenth power. I don't even know that she is a true hater. She went from a liberal to a conservative and then back to being a now uber liberal. I don't think that she has a "true" bone in her body. Which makes it ironic that she was debating Joe Lieberman, who is all over the place politically.

The left are

Submitted by Barack_must_go..... on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 11:27am.

The left are extremely incensed, to the point of calling for violence against all who don't share their fervor for the demise of America's representative government ( of, by, for the people ) that the Republicans reclaiming the House has brought about in only 4 years, as opposed to the 50 predicted by the lame street media's political geniuses.

This change effectively quashed the Obama Socialist Regimes all out assault, or  " Death to America " agenda, which is now and forevermore dead in it's tracks.

The cracks in the phoney facade put forth, at the request of the ' worst offender in chief ' this past Wednesday evening hasn't made it to it's one week anniversary, before the mental illness that pervades the entirety of the democrat, liberal, progressive, socialist underground, that makes up the destructive, violent, sordid  underbelly that is left wing politics in America today.

Ex Penn. governor Ed Rendell's violent outburst on 60 Minutes is a preview of what is to come from this mentally unstable group in the days, weeks and months to come, leading up to the 2012 elections.

Be afraid real America, be very afraid.

Like him or hate him Joe

Submitted by sar1 on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 11:27am.

Like him or hate him Joe Lieberman is an elected official and a guest on the show.

"For Sake Of Country, I Hope You Don't Become Secretary Of Defense" is a cheap, uncivil, unprofessional shoot taken by a person who pretends to be a moderate but really is a far left liberal. A real news network should never let a person like Arianna interview an elected official, it makes them look like amateurs and denigrates the debate into mud slinging.   The interviews MSNBC conducts with the individuals that they don't agree with are amazingly, hostile, rude, bi-partisan, amateurish and dumb down the important political discussion we should be having.   And they have the nerve to criticize Palin for going on Hannity to be interviewed?   I'm a Democrat but not an MSNBC Democrat

Intelligence problems

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 12:14pm.

Hillary Clinton believed the same intelligence Lieberman did.

As did people like Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Al Gore, and a whole slew of Democrats during the Clinton administration.

Someone should ask Huffington if that disqualifies people like Clinton from serving as Secretary of State or any other important position?

Of course, being a good liberal, I'm sure Arianna has a prepared talking-point for that eventuality so he or she should be prepared to come back with a quick retort.

You HAVE to think ahead with liberals.

All I needed to know about Huff

Submitted by MinneMike on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 12:40pm.

The funniest incident concerning Huffington occurred when Arnold was in the L.A. courthouse filing his papers to run for governor. The microphones were set up outside the courthouse for when Arnold emerged he would have an exchange with reporters.

However, when Arnold came out and approached the microphones, Arianna jumped in front of him and imposed herself on the reporters.

A national laugh fest ensured.

To the neo-Left, Lieberman's

Submitted by stratman on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 2:22pm.

To the neo-Left, Lieberman's "sins" stem from his unwavering support of Israel.

  • C'mon people!  Don't you realize Noam Chomsky, Norman Finklestein and Howard Zinn are the real arbiters of truthiness?

Lieberman understands as a Jew that nowhere but Israel are Jews safe from internal reprisals such as happened to them in every country and continent they have lived in/on throughout history.

Given the anti-Israel positions of Obama, it is no surprise Lieberman gravitated towards and supported McCain, who shared similar Middle East conservative positions.

The neo-Left are anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian and self-loathing as American's.  Lieberman's lifelong consistent Middle East policies do not fit the neo-Left paradigm and he is sharkbait.  It matters not that Lieberman was a faithful and reliable Liberal voter on essentially all other Liberal causes.  Lieberman committed a cardinal sin and became a menace when he continued to support Israel, the conservative approach to the Middle East, refused to sit down and shut up and ran as an Independent against the Party's candidate, and failed to shill for the anti-Israel Obama.

I respect Lieberman and his consistency.  Though I don't agree with his politics for the most part, you knew where you stood with Joe and could have an actual discussion with the man.  Not so with the neo-Left.
