Doesn't Mika Brzezinski have any Republicans in her Rolodex? With Joe Scarborough home in Florida awaiting the birth of a baby, Mika has been filling in as anchor, and I sense doing much of the show's booking [mention is often made of her work in that regard]. Today's guest lineup consisted of six Dems/liberals versus a sole Republican, brought in almost at show's end.
Here's the list, in order of appearance, of today's political guests coming from outside the NBC/MSNBC family [Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell also appeared as guests, and Harold Ford, Jr. and Pat Buchanan served as panelists]:
- Jonathan Capehart--WaPo editorial writer
- Ted Sorensen--former JFK speechwriter
- Doris Kearns Goodwin--historian and former LBJ aide
- Tom Daschle--former Dem senator [check out the spiffy red spectacles]
- Terry McAuliffe--Clinton campaign chairman
- Jon Meacham--Newsweek editor and contributing editor of the center-left Washington Monthly
- Mitt Romney--former GOP presidential candidate
I make that a 6:1 ratio. Even granted—given today's primaries—that the spotlight is currently on the Dems, would not a more balanced perspective on the race and the issues have been desirable? When's the last time Morning Joe had a line-up this heavily weighted to Republicans/conservatives—if ever?
Joe, y'all hurry back now, hear?

May 20, 2008 - 11:40 ET by marpelI agree with your observation, Mark. Even when Joe is there, there is usually an unbalanced ratio of Moderates to Libs. But the Dumber-than-a-bag-of-hammers-Mika is having a field day with her liberal friends while moderate Joe is away. I think she thinks Pat Buchanan is a conservative, but he's nothing but a sellout. :o)

I would be embarrassed if I was msnbc...but we all know they know not what that word means or when it should apply to their network.

Another question to ask
May 20, 2008 - 12:04 ET by sarcasmoAnd it's a good thing I'm here to ask it, if my guess is right, is the following question: Taking those few "conservatives" who actually do get on, how many can honestly be described as "libertarian" (note small "L") without flunking "the laugh test"? (Hint: Pat flunks it, and so does Mitt.)

The token "conservatives"
May 20, 2008 - 12:27 ET by mattmThe token "conservatives" are just there for decoration. These people aren't interested in substantive discussion, they're only interested in promoting Leftism and the Democrat Party.
Ok, but my point is
May 20, 2008 - 12:40 ET by sarcasmoThat even the decorations tend to point towards a massive level of antilibertarian bias in the media. It never seems to get mentioned unless I bring it up, but it's sure as hell there...

May 20, 2008 - 12:21 ET by mattm"Even though, because of the primaries, the focus is on the Dems... would not more balance be desirable?"
Sure, but another question is, if this were a Republican primary, would the ratio have been any different? I doubt it.
BTW What was Romney there for?
Big kick
May 20, 2008 - 12:39 ET by cvgbuckeyeI just get a big kick out of all those HUGE LIARS that were denying ANY left wing media bias, all through the 70's, 80's and 90's.
They are totally shameless with their bias today and even at that there are still a few of them that continue to insult the public's intelligence by denying that the bias exists. They are right on with a few.
What really turns your heart to stone is their mouth hanging open, ghastly-like shock at what they see as bias from Fox News. When you look up the word "Hypocrite" in the dictionary, there is a picture of these lefties right there on the page.

Tom and Linda Daschle's lobbying business is still alive? (You bet it is and more profitable than ever). Doris Kearns Goodwin has always looked dead to me. Poor Mr. Goodwin.

This dem only line up
May 20, 2008 - 14:14 ET by FAR52This dem only line up occurred all last week as well. I've e-mailed the show a few times asking them whether they had purposely decided to rid themselves of the burden of reporting the other side of the story. Naturally, I've received no responses.
My days of watching Morning Joe are over. It's a shame really. I did enjoy the show.
Daschle hound is back
May 20, 2008 - 17:35 ET by wizardjrI remember that just about every time you saw this guy he was at heel behind Dork Gephart. Gephart would take over the mics and give a spiel and then he'd turn and say, "Speak, Tom, Speak." Daschle hound would get a few words in while the press types wandered away and then Gephart would pull him to heel. Very funny.
