Donny Deutsch on NBC: Unlike U.S., 'World Has Grown Up' to Accept Infidelity of Politicians

By Kyle Drennen | May 23, 2012 | 11:14

During a panel discussion on Tuesday's NBC Today about new French President Francois Hollande having a girlfriend, advertising executive Donny Deutsch insisted Americans would soon accept the same: "I think we're ready for it....the culture that grew up on the internet, that is not going to keep prisoner candidates or people because they've had some personal mishaps, infidelities. I think the rest of the world has grown up, we're going to eventually get there." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

NBC's chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman chimed in: "Don't you just love the French?" On the April 18 edition of Rock Center, correspondent Ted Koppel shared that sentiment during a report on the French election, happily observing: "Monsieur Hollande is now living with a journalist to whom he is also not married. That's okay. It might be an issue in the United States, but not here. How civilized, how French."

Hollande had four children with a previous girlfriend, somehow that makes him "grown up" and "civilized"?

In June of 2011, Deutsch appeared on Today and pleaded that Americans "have to stop being shocked and amazed" by political sex scandals and that "we as a society have got to become a little more anesthetized to this."

On Tuesday, Lauer responded to Deutsch's declaration: "You think the United States is ready for an unmarried first couple in the White House?" The lone voice of dissent in the conversation was attorney Star Jones, who interjected: "Absolutely not! Are you out of your mind?  I'm from North Carolina! Do you believe – my grandmother is 94 years old. She's just laid out right now. You tried to kill my grandmother. This does not happen in America."

Snyderman ran to Deutsch's defense, arguing people would "fine" with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his girlfriend being president and first lady.

Deutsch concluded: "Here's the branding, we are no longer – there's no such thing as a traditional family in this country anymore. You could actually use it as a selling point."

Here is a transcript of the May 22 exchange:

8:14AM ET

MATT LAUER: There is a new president of France, the socialist Francois Hollande. Okay, that means France also has a new first lady, she is Valerie Trierweiler and she and Hollande are not married. They've been together for six years. She is a reporter who covers politics. She wants to keep her job, and she wants to keep her privacy. She says that their marital status is none of anybody's business.

NANCY SNYDERMAN: Don't you just love the French?

LAUER: How would this go over here in the United States?

DONNY DEUTSCH: I think we're ready for it, to tell you the truth. I think there's a culture coming forward, the culture that grew up on the internet, that is not going to keep prisoner candidates or people because they've had some personal mishaps, infidelities. I think the rest of the world has grown up, we're going to eventually get there.

LAUER: So you're ready – you think the United States is ready for an unmarried first couple in the White House?

SNYDERMAN: I-

STAR JONES: Absolutely not! Are you out of your mind?

DEUTSCH: I disagree with you.

JONES: I'm from North Carolina! Do you believe – my grandmother is 94 years old. She's just laid out right now. You tried to kill my grandmother.

DEUTSCH: I don't agree with you.

SNYDERMAN: You know what? I just think that Donny's right-

JONES: This does not happen in America.

SNYDERMAN: I think if Bloomberg ran for president and Diana Taylor was like the First Lady, they would say, fine. Here's the issue. I don't think she could cover politics as a reporter and keep her job.

DEUTSCH: Here's the branding, we are no longer – there's no such thing as a traditional family in this country anymore. You could actually use it as a selling point.

JONES: The United States is never going to want to have an unmarried couple as-

DEUTSCH: I disagree with you. By the way, would you have said we were going to have a black president 20 years ago?

JONES: Yeah actually, I would.

DEUTSCH: Then you're smarter than most people.

LAUER: And let's make sure that we understand the difference in our countries. According to a recent survey, more than half of couples living together in France and raising children together are not married.

SNYDERMAN: That's right.

LAUER: They're co-habitating.

SNYDERMAN: That's sort of their norm.

LAUER: So it's a cultural difference.

DEUTSCH: Exactly.

JONES: Well, as Fiddler said to Kunta Kinte, "You in America now and it don't work like that."

LAUER: Wow.

DEUTSCH: What?

Submitted by texastommy on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 11:23am.

So if a guy can't keep a promise to his wife (or vice versa), then we should expect him to be faithful to his country and its people.

Deutsch, you are a moron.

But, to your credit, you're the biggest damn moron I've ever seen.

Fidelity and Trust go together. If one demonstrates infidelity then it shows they are untrustworthy. Donny Deutsch needs to go back to singing with a boy band or wherever it is he came from. He's a complete moron.

A long time ago I received a piece of advice, from a boss, that has proven to hold true. He told me "If someone's wife can't trust him to keep his vows, why should I trust him?". Thirty years after hearing that advice, I've seen that it always seems to ring true.

New York state is already

Submitted by motherbelt on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 11:40am.

New York state is already France.

Whether this idea will take off, who knows.

All relationships are just casual joinings until one partner gets bored and wants to move on.

Kids?  Just drag them along; they'll be fine.  Stability?? PFFFT!!

Idiots like Deutsch just don't get it.  All they can see is what they want, regardless of how it affects anyone else.

God doesn't forbid adultery and shackups because He's a stick-in-the-mud.  He forbids it because He knows the damage that can be done to those involved and affected by them.

Even if one couldn't stand

Submitted by motherbelt on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 12:40pm.

Even if one couldn't stand Dr. Laura for any number of reasons, one would have to admit that she was often a lone voice standing up for kids in broken adult relationships.

She would tell divorced mothers that they had no business "dating" or trying to find a new guy, their duty was to their children.  She would inveigh heavily against women dragging their kids from one new boyfriend  to another, or "shacking up" (she insisted on the traditional term) with men in their homes with children present, involving the new guys with her kids, only to break up with them and leave the kids feeling abandoned AGAIN.

Ditto for divorced guys who had kids.  She would tell them to spend the time with their kids, WITHOUT the new honey along, and that the kids came first.

She was ALWAYS on the side of the kids.

Part of Europe's problems

is that they have devolved into a less moral society and are more accepting of deviant behavior in their culture and in their politicians.

This is NOT indicative of "growing up" but is instead indicative of a society in decline. If you elect people who have low moral standards, then don't be surprized when they screw the country for their own personal gain.

Another amazing dichotomy

Submitted by mustango on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 11:53am.

On the one hand we have same-sex marriage advocates framing their cause as a matter of historical importance on par with the civil rights movement of the 60's.

On the other, we have the likes of Deutsch pushing to reduce marriage to mean little more than an entry in a database.

That's the Goal

Submitted by Joe W. on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 12:05pm.

This is the goal of "progressives"...They advocate the breakup of the American Family and the abdication of those traditional values that made America the greatest nation in the history of the world. The end game is a "New World Government" run through the United Nations. As I have repeatedly claimed, this is all part of prophecy being fulfilled right before our very eyes. This, coupled with the increasing mockery and vilification of Christianity, the increase in catastrophic "natural" events, war and rumors of war, plagues, pestilence and total moral collapse, and economic collapse are all part of End of Times Prophecy as described in the Bible's "Revelations". The choice before us is pretty straight forward, really. We can choose to get "right" with God and dwell in Eternal Heaven at His side...or we can join the "progressives", and continue the lemming like walk to eternal damnation. I made my choice about 2 years ago. And I am watching the story unfold before my eyes without a care in the world. I'm with Jesus, folks. Y'all should join me....

It is the goal of communism. First, destroy the church to demoralize the people, then destroy the family unit, turning the children against parents and husbands against wives. The state becomes all.

Acceptable infidelity?

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 05/23/2012 - 12:42pm.

Acceptable infidelity? Tell that to the divorce courts! Infidelity is the number one reason for divorces, and not just here but overseas as well. Looks like Americans aren't as willing to accept infidelity as these idiots believe, nor is the rest of the world.

But hay, we're talking abut politicians here, correct? We're talking about the leaders, right? So let's just apply a lower standard to them than we apply to our own spouses, correct? Yea, like that's ever worked before!

By the way, I wonder why they're trying to justify politicians and their infidelity? Is there about to be an October surprise about Obama and infidelity? Inquiring minds want to know.

we in the US still believe in honor and integrity and honesty. And so a VOW is still a VOW.

Therefore if someone BREAKS their VOW...then MOST people feel they cannot TRUST the person who broke the promise they made.

For example, when Jennifer Flowers came out about Bill Clinton during his first election bid for the White House, I recall Hillary asking on TV if SHE could forgive him, why couldn't I? And a lot of my liberal friends took up the chant and asked me the same question.

My Answer?

Well SURE I can forgive him...I'm not married to him...so it's no skin off MY nose if he cheats on his wife.

BUT answer me THIS: If his OWN WIFE who should be the CLOSEST person to him on the planet cannot TRUST him...WHY SHOULD I?
