NBC Cheers Liberal Ithaca Mayor as the Next Obama
Touting the newly-elected mayor of Ithaca, New York, 24-year old Democrat Svante Myrick, on Wednesday's NBC Rock Center, host Brian Williams drew parallels to Barack Obama: "He grew up a bi-racial kid with an unusual name. He went into politics. If that story sounds familiar, then you must meet the young man they must now call 'Mr. Mayor.'" [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]
Introducing the segment, Williams told viewers to "think about what of this story sounds familiar." During her report, correspondent Kate Snow promoted the comparison: "When he was in high school, Myrick's grandmother gave him a copy of Barack Obama's book, 'Dreams From My Father.' And for another bi-racial kid struggling with his identity, growing up without his father, raised by a white mother, he saw himself in that story."
Williams praised Myrick's story: "It may be years before we know if he's destined for anything larger, but what he's done already is so remarkable and such a testament to what's still possible in this country..." Snow began by declaring: "At his swearing-in on January 1st, he certainly sounded like a mayor." A sound bite followed of Myrick using Obama-like rhetoric: "I'm so full of hope."
Snow emphasized Myrick's liberal ideology: "Growing up in a family that was always just scraping by shaped Myrick's political views....He says food stamps and the free lunch programs at school helped feed his family." She later added: "At a time when government programs are being slashed, Myrick sees value in a government that worked for him."
Snow encouraged Myrick to elaborate on his support for government welfare: "You've said that you're not self-made." Myrick replied: "No. That is not my story. I mean, this is not the story of a self-made man. This is the story of a community that conspired together to raise, you know, a child. And that is – that's the truth."
Following the report, Williams wondered: "Kate, do you have any doubt we'll be covering this guy for a long time?" Kate gleefully remarked: "I'm hopeful he'll remember me when he's at a higher level.... Here's the funny thing, he could not run for president until 2024, Brian, because he won't be 35 until 2024. Think of that."
Snow concluded: "The Mayor's a likeable guy. He's a likable guy. He's a Democrat, he's got some very, you know, set views based on his upbringing. But he's a very likeable guy. I think he's got some future."
Here is a portion of the February 29 story:
9:43PM ET
WILLIAMS: Welcome back. We mentioned this earlier, and think about what of this story sounds familiar. A bi-racial man with an exotic name, raised by his single white mother and grandparents, overcomes lean times in life, makes it to an ivy league school, runs for office and wins. Well, this story, however, is the story of Svante Myrick, who has become the mayor of Ithaca, New York at the tender age of 24. It may be years before we know if he's destined for anything larger, but what he's done already is so remarkable and such a testament to what's still possible in this country, that Kate Snow went upstate in New York State to meet the man they now call "Mr. Mayor."
KATE SNOW: If Svante Myrick was nervous, he didn't show it, even though everything had changed overnight.
SVANTE MYRICK: That's me.
UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Yes, it is.
SNOW: At just 24 years old, Myrick is the youngest mayor ever elected in the city of Ithaca, New York, a Democrat in a liberal college town. This is his first day on the job.
MYRICK: This is weird. This is my – my office now.
SNOW: At his swearing-in on January 1st, he certainly sounded like a mayor.
MYRICK: I'm so full of hope.
(...)
SNOW: Growing up in a family that was always just scraping by shaped Myrick's political views, supporting the local food kitchen is important to him. He says food stamps and the free lunch programs at school helped feed his family.
MYRICK: I know that personally I would not be here, were it not for these programs.
(...)
SNOW: When he was in high school, Myrick's grandmother gave him a copy of Barack Obama's book, "Dreams From My Father." And for another bi-racial kid struggling with his identity, growing up without his father, raised by a white mother, he saw himself in that story.
MYRICK: I thought, well, if this, you know, guy with that name and those ears can do it, then a guy with this name and these ears can do it.

I hope it all works out for the city of Ithaca

Maybe they have a competent city manager.
If it doesn't work out, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Think of it this way, if Ithaca is voting for this guy the same way Americans were voting for Soetoro, and they haven't learned a thing(or are just too stupid to learn), then there ain't no way in hell Ithaca will do well with this guy who seeks to emulate someone he calls bi-racial.
And the helluvit is, this kid is more black than the multi-racial farce he's seeking to emulate. By not knowing these salient facts, he's already lost.
This village kid won't last a term. I call him village kid because based on what he's said about himself, it fits right there with the "It takes a village" nonsense.
I wish people would stop doing things that are idealistically stupid. This country might have a shot at surviving such things.

he's a really likable guy.
Ithaca is a granola city in a granola county, suffering both Cornell University and Ithaca College. There are more hippie types in town than you canshake three sticks at.
More entitlements here we come.

When I read Williams said "...then you must meet the young man they must now call 'Mr. Mayor." I knew that idiot has never been there. I have an old friend who lives there--a lefty to the bone--and the idea he'd call ANY politician "Mr. Mayor" (or other honorific) is fall on the floor funny.

Wow, NBC gushing over another Democrat with no accomplishments running for, and winning a political office. George Romney had it right. You shouldn't get into politics if you have a mortgage to pay, or in this case, probably still live at home.

"totally inexperienced" when they compared him with Obysmal.
Surprise, surprise.
Sounds to me like Myrick's story will be a long, drawn out repetition of "I got mine, now gimme yours to give to other me's".

Tompkins County Blue Amidst Red

Check out this map and look for the very blue Tompkins County, and you'll know why they elected this man as mayor. Unlike its neighboring counties that tipped toward McCain, Tompkins went for Obama by a margin of 69% to 29%!
(I am originally from Chemung County and always got a kick out of going to Ithaca to see the hippies.)

Thank you Brian. Very important stuff there. Certainly trumps President Obama imploring Americans to vote according to their race, doesn't it?
And you know what's best about it? Harry Reid will be thrilled Myrick can talk with "no negro dialect unless he wants one".
Bravo, Brian. King of pap.

Comment 1) There is one important difference between Svante Myrick and Barack Obama: [unusually named] Svante has already been more thoroughly vetted by NBC than Obama ever was.
Comment 2) “Here’s the funny part: he won’t be able to run for president until 2024 because he won’t be 35 until 2024.”
My, ain’t that quaint. As if the Constitution will be anything more than a piece of bun wad by that time as far as anybody at NBC is concerned. If this precocious political tyro is ready to be president before he 35 years of age, who in the MSM would ever object? I mean he has an unusual name, he is bi-racial, "growing up without his father, raised by a white mother," [his white mother?, or just "a" white mother? oh well, what does it matter?]... [singing] Who could ask for anything more?...
Comment 3) Have you ever seen such toady fawning? Well, yes in fact, just down the hall in Chris Matthews’s padded cell.
BTW, I am sure that there are lots bright young women with genuine common sense (who are a very far cry indeed from Bernadette Dohrn, for example) getting elected to PTA’s all over America. Lord knows how many of them just might become one of the highest politicians in the land. Is there ZERO chance any of them would every get the kind of treatment that Brian Williams just gave Svante? You betcha!

Speaking as a parent who HAS BEEN THERE FOR MY KIDS
Submitted by Radical1979 on Thu, 03/01/2012 - 9:20pm.
I would be pretty pi$$ed off if I was a single parent who had raised my child, on my own, and my kid focused on the deadbeat who wasn't there helping (male or female deadbeat). It's a sign of immaturity to mean to idealize the parent who wasn't there to say no and not be able to give the kid whatever he wants.
But no one here will accuse BO of being mature, and I'm not so sure about this guy either.
Also being lauded for accomplishments he hasn't accomplished.
