On Thursday's episode of The Office on NBC, character Oscar Martinez, played by actor Oscar Nunez, apologizes to a park ranger at the Gettysburg battlefield for both the ranting of character Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and for "the Republicans who are cutting your funding." [Audio available here]

Despite Dunder Mifflin's accountant taking a gratuitous shot at the GOP, the historic Civil War battlefield opened a new $103 million visitors center in 2008 and accepts private donations. [View video after the jump]

Saw that

I saw that and cringed a little. It was just so out of place in a show that's been consistently clever in its humor, although I'm sure the writers thought it was cute to take a little pot shot at Republicans.

Interesting that they chose the gay character to say the line. A double whammy, perhaps?

Don't watch the show..

so I have no idea about the politics or the backstory but I see nothing wrong with people paying to use parks. User fees are the most sensible way to direct funding as long as they aren't dissapearing into one of those ludricrous "general funds" as they have in my State.

Oh no, not even THIS show is safe!

Submitted by NJRightWinger12 on Mon, 11/21/2011 - 11:29pm.

I was waiting for someone to post this-just saw the ep the other day, and even though Ive loved this show from Day One, it may be time for it to go. Besides the fact that they have not, nor will they ever, be able to replace such an iconic figure as Michael Scott, but now they seem to drift aimlessly thru each segment, with no rhyme or reason! Dunder-Mifflin was on the verge of collapse last year-now this year theyre not only running smoothly, but with no sign of past despair. And when Oscar said that, I had to rewind it thrice to make sure I got the gist of it-since his parts are usually boring-assed anyways. They made him gay a few years back, so that might have been the first warning sign? Dont know if Im gonna continue if this becomes "Boston Legal Redux"!

The Office

Submitted by nolotrippen on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 11:28am.

Oscar is the somewhat-smart, leftist, gay character. He's always putting his two cents in, though not always left-wing (sometimes he's very logical) and they have actually made fun of him on the show where in interrupts people with "Actually, the truth is..."

“It is almost impossible to distinguish a politician from a gangster.” (Will Durant, 1931)

I predicted tea parties would return. Now I'm predicting dueling will return.

If they ever "made fun of him"

Submitted by NJRightWinger12 on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 3:58pm.

It always backfires, hes usually the "Voice of reason" thruout all the antics of the dumb-read WHITE-employees-save for Darryl, who, of course, is black-and Oscar is so ?SMART, AND COOL, AND GAY!" NOW hes a Republican basher, so hes one of the 99% ers!
