On CBS 'Evening News,' Tucson Sheriff Dupnik Doubles Down

By Kyle Drennen | January 11, 2011 | 19:07

On Monday's CBS Evening News, anchor Katie Couric announced that Democratic Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik had "been thrust into the national spotlight for some remarks he made," adding, "he's not backing down." In the interview that followed, Dupnik asserted: "If you're in law enforcement and you're not a right-winger you get all kinds of heat from the right-wing nuts."

Couric noted how Dupnik "blamed the rampage in part on overheated political rhetoric, saying Arizona has become, quote, 'a Mecca for prejudice and bigotry.'" She acknowledged that "some Republicans have called his remarks irresponsible" and challenged the Sheriff: "Some people would say you were overly politicizing the situation. That it appears at this juncture – although it's unclear – that this was a lone deranged individual that might not have been inspired to do this at all for political reasons." Dupnik laughingly professed: "I'm not a political person by nature. I've been a police officer my entire life. I have no agenda."

In an interview with local news station KGUN9-TV on April 27, 2010, Dupnik attacked Arizona's newly passed immigration law: "Pima County's top lawman says he has no intention of enforcing Arizona's controversial crackdown on illegal immigration.  Sheriff Clarence Dupnik calls SB 1070 'racist,' 'disgusting,' and 'unnecessary.'"

On Monday, Dupnik explained his comments about the shooting to Couric: "I was very, very angry and I think that there are millions of people in this country who are very concerned about the tenor of things in this country, particularly when it comes to politics." Couric wondered: "How does this community heal?" The Sheriff kept pushing politics: "I think this country needs to tone it down. When I was growing up, it was a different country."

Interestingly, in an interview with CBS's Julie Chen on April 12, 2000, Dupnik commented on a Tucson middle school teacher who shot herself in her classroom and then claimed an intruder had perpetrated the crime. At that time, Dupnik was unwilling to ascribe any specific motivation to the woman, stating: "We're dealing with irrational behavior, and when you try to rationalize irrational behavior, I – I think you wind up putting yourself behind the eight ball."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Here is a full transcript of Couric's January 10 interview with Dupnik:

6:42PM ET

KATIE COURIC: Meanwhile, one law enforcement official has been thrust into the national spotlight for some remarks he made following the shooting. On Saturday night, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, a Democrat, blamed the rampage in part on overheated political rhetoric, saying Arizona has become, quote, "a Mecca for prejudice and bigotry." Some Republicans have called his remarks irresponsible. I spoke with the Sheriff earlier today and he's not backing down.

CLARENCE DUPNIK: If you're in law enforcement and you're not a right-winger you get all kinds of heat from the right-wing nuts.

COURIC: But some people would say you were overly politicizing the situation. That it appears at this juncture – although it's unclear – that this was a loan deranged individual that might not have been inspired to do this at all for political reasons.

DUPNIK: And we'll never know the answer to that because there's no way to get into the heart and soul of a person and find out what their true motive is. And second of all, we're dealing with a very troubled personality.

COURIC: You stand by what you said over the weekend?

DUPNIK: I'm not a political person by nature. I've been a police officer my entire life. I have no agenda. But I was very, very angry and I think that there are millions of people in this country who are very concerned about the tenor of things in this country, particularly when it comes to politics.

COURIC: How does this community heal?

DUPNIK: I think this country needs to tone it down. When I was growing up, it was a different country.

COURIC: There are also laws that allow you to take concealed or non-concealed weapons and carry them with you at all times. Is that correct?

DUPNIK: That is absolutely correct and that's the height of insanity. I don't know what else they can do. Maybe they can pass a law that we – that would require that every child have an Uzi in their crib.

Some hyperbole for the hyperbolic Sheriff of Pima County

Submitted by JakeMo on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 7:21pm.

DUPNIK: "I was very, very angry and I think that there are millions of people in this country who are very concerned about the tenor of things in this country."

Is he trying to be ironic? Or is he really this dense?

If I hear Dupnik correctly, he seems to be saying that when he's angry he expresses it. But if you're angry, you better shut up and get in line. After all, his expressions of frustration are heartfelt and sincere. While yours are evil and should be silenced.

What's worse, this guy has a gun and the force of law behind his expressions of anger. All I have is a sign that says "Taxed Enough Already."

Some hyperbole for the hyperbolic Sheriff of Pima County: With this kind of hate coming out of his office, I have to wonder how safe it is to drive through his county with a Tea Party bumper sticker on your car.

Something i can agree with that Dupnik stated:  "...require that every child have an Uzi in their crib." Works for me!

This guys is trying to become the "anti-Arpaio."

Isn't it funny, he's basically saying "I can blame it on right wing hate without any proof, but you can't deny it, because you have no proof."

Typically liberal logic.

I don't think the sheriff was targeting republicans, even though it seems from this article that it is widely believed he WAS referring to republicans.  I'm missing that point from his statement.  It takes 2 sides to fight, and political rhetoric only happens with BOTH sides involved.

If you can't see or acknowledge that the sheriff was referring to republicans by his comments and that the media continues to play him like a fiddle (a la Cindy Sheehan) then I can't help you very much.  The concern is the media largely fails to look for any possibility of blame on the left.

Personally, I don't think it is vitriolic ENOUGH.  While I am quite comfortable with how we elect our Reps and Sens, the debate in Congress needs to resemble the British Parliament, where extreme sarcasm, booing, and being sharp-tongued is the order of the day, and business as usual.

As sheriff, this guy is supposed to be serving and protecting ALL the citizens under his jurisdiction. The fact that he comes out of the gate making opinionated, divisive statements shows that he is beyond unprofessional. He talks about all the anger out there...and he's nothing but angry and dismissive. He talks about prejudice/biotry, as he makes disparaging comments about a segment of the population he's supposed to serve. He talks about careless talk that instigates...and then name names of those he feels are to blame and gives inferences that heighten distrust and add to the confusion.

He needs to run the "THINK" checklist before he speaks (and if he did, I'm pretty sure he'd never say anything):

T...Is it truthful?

H...Is it helpful?

I...Is it inspirational?

N...Is it necessary?

K..Is it kind?

Sheriff Dupnut.. "heat from right-wing nuts??"

Submitted by Gary Hall on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 7:38pm.

Dupnik asserted: "If you're in law enforcement and you're not a right-winger you get all kinds of heat from the right-wing nuts."

Perhaps - you're the nut here.

Sheriff Clarence Dupnik calls SB 1070 'racist,' 'disgusting,' and 'unnecessary.'"

Well gee, that's a bit inflamatory, ya think?

Oh goodness. We already know that Dubnik is a Democrat. He's recently been a guest on the radical left's "Democracy Now," on NPR, and on bigot Tavis Smiley's PBS show, providing slim evidence to support their leftist agenda in pusing for open borders - against the will of the people.

So he thinks that the AZ anti-illegal immigration bill is "racist, disgusting and unnecessary." Fine. That's his disgusting right. However, let's put that in perspective  - OK?

Democratic activist Sheriff Dupnut is in a fringe minority. He's up against a "Democracy" here.

A little background:

May 12, 2010 - The controversial Arizona law passed last month requires state and local police, after making “lawful contact,” to check the immigration status of anyone they reasonably suspect is in the country illegally, and arrest those who cannot prove they are legal residents.

The report [a national polling] by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press  (I think that it's safe to say that they are a liberal outfit)  found that:

Seventy-three percent said they backed a measure requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them,

..while 67% approve of allowing police to detain anyone who cannot verify that they are in the country legally.

The two [supposedly] most contentious pieces of the AZ bill have broad public support.

This is not a surprise. For decades, most straight polling has clearly indicated where some 70% of voters stand. Yet, the national media continues to treat this broad public view as if they were some minority group full of hate?

The majority of the land support the rule of law - they also support this law. He, on the other hand, as a law enforcement officer does not; in fact, here, he promises not to enforce the law. Will someone please impeach this divisive character?

Druing the campaign, then candidate Obama promised to enforce the laws. He promised to: improve border security, send the illegal immigrants to the back of the line, to pay a fine, to make them learn English, and to wait their turn to get back in. Obama also promised, in conclusion that,  "we can once again be a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. That's what I intend to do as president of the United States."

Sheriff Dupnut has laid out his position; he doesn't intend to inforce the laws which he was elected to enforce. Where is the media on demanding he be recalled?

Perhaps we should actually pause, and think about where the vast majority of name calling and vitriol actually emanates from. Perhaps a few of them are reacting to the suffocating hand of a free press - the one that seems to be snuffing freedom of one's heart-felt views.

Bret Baier, Fox News, tonight indicated that Loughner had threathened his teachers at the community college that he atttended and others.  And, Sheriff Dipstick was aware of those threats.  Yet, he did nothing.  He didn't interview Loughner.  He didn't refer him to mental health providers that could evaluate him.  He did nothing.

Well, not exactly nothing.  He blamed conservatives.  When blame, if one can blame the actions of a pot smoking liberal nut job, points more and more to Sheriff Dipstick.

I am sure that the good people of Pima County, AZ can find it in their hearts to retire Sheriff Dipstick at some outrageously high percentage of his current pay.  Heck, he appears to be a great candidate for a part-time job over at the DU, the Huff 'n Puff, et al . . . .

Meanwhile, we need to get our House of Representatives back to the work we elected them for in November.  They need to repeal duhbamacare, cut spending, cut the red tape, make people that aren't paying taxes now pay them,  get unions out of government jobs, get rid of pensions for government workers and get them into 401k programs like the rest of us.

Clarence Dupnik

Submitted by okiehawk44 on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 8:55pm.

Listening to Sheriff Dupnik's press conferences and trying to learn some new facts I was shocked that a sheriff in such a situation seemed not to have any relevant facts at hand and constantly looked over his right shoulder to aides for confirmation of this or that while stating that "this has not been released yet" when I'd just read it on the internet or "we don't know" when it was being reported on other media outlets -- he only seemed to come alive when offering his personal opinions. This is a sheriff of a large country in Arizona where a deranged man has just killed and wounded many of his citizens and Sheriff Dupnik just doesn't appear to have any idea of much of anything. I'm sorry to say this to you in Tucson, but your sheriff is either incompetent or just a figurehead -- either way he needs to be replaced. He's a reflection on you and not a good one.

Reflections of "no agenda"?

Submitted by Tomorama on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 8:58pm.

This guy was fully aware of the KILLER, he had a whole package on him and yet when more complaints were filed, he did NOTHING.

Newsflash to his Mommy and Daddy and to the Sherriff, getting kicked out of school, no go on the military, people were afraid of him because of his open weeping sitting on the sidewalk and a litany of other stuff in his record, GET HIM SOME HELP.

This Sherriff is blaming others when all he needs is a big fat mirror.

Not only is the Sheriff 'stuck on stupid', he's out there in his crusier doing donuts on it! Hope he doesn't spin into a telephone pole and accidentally aspirate his doughnut! (Better he be stuffing his cakehole with a Dunkin Donuts cruller than letting all of his left-wing stupid dribble out out of it!)

As Sheriff he should not have an opinion

Submitted by octavioj on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 9:47pm.

His job as Sheriff is not to have an opinion but rather to act on facts. He is actually responsible to uncover the facts so the DA can build a case against criminals. Is that really what he was doing with those comments? He is actually tainting the investigation and building a case for the defense. He only has the duty to provide evidence for the prosecution so it can prove guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Again is that what he was doing?

His grasp of evidence seems to be such that he could watch "Dukes of Hazzard" reruns, wondering each and every time if Roscoe's car was going to make it over the creek this time.

I have a thought...

Submitted by Indie Dude on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 10:45pm.

If the Sheriff stated that Arizona has become "a Mecca for prejudice and bigotry" due to the likes of the talking heads on the Right.  Let's all take the Sheriff at his word, his opinion, his mindset, or his facts with no "agenda" behind it. Indeed the political atmosphere in Arizona is at its' very worst.

Then why did the Sheriff not assign security for Ms. Giffords at The Safeway at a Political Event?

Pardon me, but that's a damn lie.  I have relatives in that county and they say he's served on a democrats campaign every election for decades.  He worked on Gabby Giffords campaign.

There's some reason this guy is trying to help the shooter.  Time to check it out.

Sheriff Dipstick needs to go...

Submitted by JanineC on Tue, 01/11/2011 - 10:59pm.

Sheriff Dipstick needs to leave office.  He is a disgrace and is actually responsible for allowing this nutcase to do what he did.  The shooter had already made threats and showed himself to be unstable long ago...but the Sheriff refused to do anything and even said he was no threat.  Now he is trying to blame the right and free speech??  He is incompetent and just a  hack politician.  He should not be in law enforcement.

...finally gets promoted to sheriff.  Didn't this jackwagon also come out against enforcing the AZ immigration laws last year?  I never considered buying a gun before but with people like psycho boy on the one side and Sheriff Dipstick on the other maybe it's time.

Dupnik: I only enforce laws I agree with

Submitted by JakeMo on Wed, 01/12/2011 - 1:08am.

This Sheriff would have us believe he is the arbiter of moderate political discourse.

April 28th he publicly declared that he will not enforce a democratically enacted immigration law.

A law enforcement officer who publicly declares disrespect for the democratic process and states that he can pick and choose the laws that he is subject to is hardly suited to lecture the rest of us on healthy political discourse.

In a Western democracy, I can't think of more incendiary political language than a powerful government official declaring that he won't obey the voice of the people.

If anything, his attitude projected a sense of lawlessness to would-be lawbreakers.

I would think criminals in Pima County find it much easier to rationalize their ethical lapses when the chief law enforcement officer in the County has declared that laws are optional for some.

NO SECRET as to the sheriff's felonious actions

Submitted by gopcongress on Wed, 01/12/2011 - 3:02am.

The REASON that Sheriff Dupnik is doing what he's doing is because he is, pragmatically, AUDITIONING to be MSNBC's or similar non-Fox News "Go to" guy to be the liberal counterpart to Sheriff Joe Arpaio or to Sheriff Babeu. Frankly, there can be NO OTHER REASON for this seemingly stupid action. As such I have started a recall process for Pima. It is NOT an online process, but the real nuts and bolts effort to garner 100,000 sigantures and force a reelection. The most important thing is to ensure that the sheriff remains above board when it comes to political views.

However, if my interpretation of what Dupnik is doing is correct, he is actually abusing his position for personal, financial gain for that aforementioned post-law enforcement media gig. If that's the case, then we have a potentiality for FELONY fraud. In any case, that is why the recall is going to be paramount in my efforts.

Whenever ANYONE tells you that they aren't political, nor are they partisan in any way (and please note this joker is hiding behind my "Trust me, I'm a professional law enforcement type" schtick), your FIRST cue is to TURN and your SECOND is to RUN.

This idiot needs to be fired, by the voters or whatever, and until then, I hate to say it...the Pima County Sheriff's Department should be looked upon as suspect until it happens.
