Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez Fired From CBS Early Show

A major staff shakeup has occurred on the CBS Early Show. Starting January 3, current co-hosts Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez, along with weatherman Dave Price, will all be replaced. Saturday Early Show co-host Chris Wragge and the broadcast's current news reader Erica Hill will take over for Smith and Rodriguez, while former ABC weather person Marysol Castro will take the place of Price.

Associated Press television writer David Bauder reported the changes on Tuesday, noting: "CBS News is completely overhauling 'The Early Show' to give the broadcast team a fresh look." The network morning show has long trailed in the ratings, consistently coming in a distant third compared to NBC's Today and ABC's Good Morning America.

According to Baudner, reporter and Saturday Evening News anchor Jeff Glor will become the Early Show news reader. Smith will remain with the network as a correspondent and primary fill-in anchor for the Evening News and Face the Nation. Rodriguez and Price will also stay with the network, but in an uncertain capacity.

In an internal CBS News memo obtained by TVNewser, CBS News & Sports President Sean McManus confirmed the changes: "All the members of the new team are gifted and accomplished morning show broadcasters.  Erica, Chris and Jeff are, of course, familiar CBS faces who have already done outstanding work on TES in different roles.  Marysol is a terrific talent, with years of morning show experience covering weather and reporting feature stories."

Of the departing staff, McManus declared: "Harry, Maggie and Dave are outstanding journalists and consummate professionals.  Day in day out, they have delivered excellent broadcasts with tremendous creativity and journalistic integrity, covering the world, anchoring and reporting with distinction.  They are moving on to new and significant roles at CBS News that capitalize on their talents and their interests."

Toodaloo, Harriet! It's back to voiceovers for the History Channel.

Edit: BTW, Dave Price has always served CBS in "an uncertain capacity."

Actually, McManus, they are not and have not, and that's why they're gone. Does anybody at CBS have any integrity?

When did talk show hosts

When did talk show hosts become "journalists"?

Is Jerry Springer going to win the Pulitzer Prize this year?

Nope.  Jerry actually has more journalistic integrity than these mopes.

Strange but true, after watching Springer on Dancing With The Stars, I liked him on a personal level.  Self-depracating, gracious, genuine and honestly seemed a good father, Jerry was the antithesis of his disgraceful TV show.  Makes you wonder what screw is loose in his head in order to live the duality of his life.

Whatever will Harry do now...

that he's lost his public forum for his daily, nauseating, Obama droolfest?

"Harry, Maggie and Dave are outstanding journalists and consummate professionals.  Day in day out, they have delivered excellent broadcasts with tremendous creativity and journalistic integrity, covering the world, anchoring and reporting with distinction.  They are moving on to new and significant roles at CBS News that capitalize on their talents and their interests." HA!

I love this memo...What a load of bs it is..."Outstanding journalists...consumate professionals..." They've delivered "excellent broadcasts...with...creativity and...integrity..." and are "moving on to new and significant roles..." at CBS. What new and significant roles would those be? Being a weekend, fill-in talking head for CBS newsbreaks? I love this, and it's about time. Maybe CBS has finally gotten tired of constantly bringing up the rear in the ratings. Should be interesting to see how the new crew does.

Submitted by PrairieSky on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 5:42pm.

That would be about what I'd expect, if we really ever do see or hear from Smith or Rodriguez at all at CBS again after January...In the meantime, they'll likely both be looking for something else outside of CBS...Good luck with that...Who'd want 'em, except maybe MSNBC? Maybe NPR? Hmmm...Now there's a thought!

He'll probably end up working for Zsa Zsa Huff n' Puff like all the other smug leftists who recently hit the unemployment lines.

Submitted by Van Halen on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 4:52pm.

I called it! I wish I could find my comments from about a month ago. I said that the nets, facing massive revenue and viewer loss would allow some of these shows to go through the election cycle where they were all guaranteed better ratings and then it was the axe. I'm surprised it took them this long. Watch for MSNBC and CNN to do another shakeup. Someone at those stations HAS to be looking at the bottom line.

I'll go on a limb here and call Parker Spitzer for CNN. But all MSNBC's people have crappy ratings, so not sure who's going first there.

Harry, Maggie and Dave

Submitted by Herbster on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 7:49pm.

Dumping the two lightweight lefties Harry and Maggie who never had an original thought between them makes sense.  But, why fire the poor weatherman?  All they do is point at a map!  Harry and Maggie got the daily "Word" from the administration and they were off to the races. There are options here.......If Harry becomes "Client #12," he could grab Maggie and they could replace ratface Spitzer and the harridan who sits beside him.  THAT'S IT!  Replace Parker/ Spitzer with Maggie/Harrry, or, should we call it Mata Hari?  OR......will they take a few weeks off and join NPR?  Maybe they could do specials on MSNBC?  They could do a special on proctologists and call themselves the "Ream Team?"

Have a nice day!
