Appearing on CBS’s Sunday Morning, commentator Nancy Giles shared her thoughts on Congressman Joe Wilson’s outburst: "Some sign waving and you probably heard about it, heckling. At a joint session of Congress....That’s the voice of Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina, not some drunk at open mic night, calling the President a liar."
Giles continued, denouncing all health care reform protestors: "He later apologized, but still, it was a frightening mix of disrespect and bad behavior, with a dash of this summer’s town hall meeting craziness. I guess we should be grateful that there weren’t any ‘show us your birth certificate’ signs and at least no one beat anyone with a cane, which actually happened in the old Senate chamber in 1856."
Giles would certainly know about "disrespect and bad behavior," on the October 5, 2003 broadcast of Sunday Morning, she compared conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh to Adolf Hitler: "So as Rush’s world has steadily crumbled, it’s no wonder he allegedly had to turn to prescription pain killers....Edgy, controversial, brilliant....Hitler would have killed in talk radio. He was edgy, too."
Here is a full transcript of the segment:
10:12AM
CHARLES OSGOOD: A certain public speaker has been much in the news these past few days and much in the thoughts of our Sunday Morning contributor Nancy Giles.
NANCY GILES: This past week was big speech week for President Obama. Two in particular stand out. Tuesday was the back-to-school speech to America’s students. Would it be an innocent, ‘be cool, stay in school’ chat or an evil socialist indoctrination by some guy with a faulty birth certificate? I watched the speech online and it seemed inspiring. But when I went back and read the text, the devil, as they say, was in the details. Listen carefully.
BARACK OBAMA: How’s everybody doing today?
GILES: Sounds like an innocent salutation, but that’s none of the President’s business. This was an invasion of the students’ privacy, an almost Stalin-esque question.
OBAMA: You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to train for it. And work for it. And learn for it.
GILES: Well, this is the President as dream killer. It’s an attack on the young person who fantasies about winning the lottery, being Paris Hilton, or America’s Next Top Model. You’re not the boss of me, Mr. President.
OBAMA: By the way, I hope all of you are washing your hands a lot.
GILES: Is he suggesting that our children are dirty? That their homes are unsanitary? Who does he think he is? Well, he’s the President. And I’ll say this for the students of Arlington, Virginia, they were polite. They were raised well. They sat and listened. And they weren’t indoctrinated as far as I can tell. Wednesday night was the adults’ turn.
OBAMA: It has now been nearly a century since Theodore Roosevelt first called for health care reform.
GILES: So there was the President in front of a joint session of Congress, making his case for health care reform. It was political theater. Half of the room applauding and the other half sitting on their hands. Some disgruntled muttering. Some texting. ‘I am not listening. I am not listening.’ Some sign waving and you probably heard about it, heckling. At a joint session of Congress.
JOE WILSON: You lie!
GILES: That’s the voice of Representative Joe Wilson of South Carolina, not some drunk at open mic night, calling the President a liar. He later apologized, but still, it was a frightening mix of disrespect and bad behavior, with a dash of this summer’s town hall meeting craziness. I guess we should be grateful that there weren’t any ‘show us your birth certificate’ signs and at least no one beat anyone with a cane, which actually happened in the old Senate chamber in 1856. You know, we don’t have to agree. But you wish your elected officials would act like the classy students in Arlington, Virginia, and across the country, and at least listen to what the President of the United States has to say.

How do you figure?
September 15, 2009 - 17:31 ET by nwahsLast week Rush said conservatives are like the Delta House fraternity from Animal House. Conservatives are the bawdy misfit fraternity mooning the elitists. Rush is really right on the mark. If you think of a stunt that would garner applause from the members of the Delta House fraternity, it will probably garner applause from the conservative movement today.
So moon Obama. Spit jello on Nancy Pelosi. Egg Barney Frank's car. Run Harry Reid's shorts up the Capitol flag poll(half-STAFF!).
All that would be approved by the Delta House and the conservative movement today. Just ask Rush. Rush has proclaimed you the Delta House of politics.

Nwahs - never mind. I found it
September 15, 2009 - 17:43 ET by FeynmanFanHere's an exerpt that explains how Rush was using the analogy. I think you might have missed the point, Nwahs:
"So when Obama had some lesson plans drawn for teachers to jam down elementary children's throats, Americans didn't bend over and say, "Thank you, sir, may I have another?" Gibbs made the perfect analogy here with the Animal House movie, he probably didn't even realize it. Barack Obama is Dean Wormer and his administration is all these elitist frat boy kids who think they're better than everybody else lauding it over everybody. He's working with an elitist fraternity with members in it like Van Jones and Bill Ayers and the State-Controlled Media, and their goal is to run the campus, the country, for their own benefit, and the rest of us are just a bunch of Blutarsky slobs not smart enough or cool enough to be in their fraternity. The last time I watched Animal House the joke was on Dean Wormer and these arrogant frat boys. The food fight that we're having -- if that's what Gibbs wants to call this -- the food fight we're having now isn't hurting anybody. It has the whole country laughing at people like Obama and Gibbs, who think they're too cool for the room. "

September 15, 2009 - 18:09 ET by FeynmanFanWhat Dowd did was provide a textbook example of people hearing what they want to hear. It's more an indictment of their frame of mind than it is of the person they're projecting their own beliefs onto.
As for the connection between Wilson's butt and Palin, who knows what goes on in nwahs' mind? He'd have to expain that himself.

September 15, 2009 - 17:57 ET by nwahsHe has the movement pegged, absolutely pegged. This movement is about thumbing their noses at the establishment. So picture a stunt from Animal House that would actually be legal or kind of legal, and it will get you praise in the conservative movement. Spit mash potatoes, spit jello. BY STAN FINGER
The Wichita Eagle
WICHITA — A man and woman decided to give the phrase "dumpster diving" a new twist over the weekend, crawling inside one on North Waco so they could be alone.
But while they were engaged in what Wichita police described as "an intimate moment," they were robbed by a man armed with a pocket knife.
It all unfolded shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of North Waco, police said, when the man and woman, both 44, crawled into a dumpster for privacy.
A short time later, a 59-year-old man and his 64-year-old companion interrupted the couple inside the dumpster.
With the older man encouraging him, the 59-year-old man pulled out a pocket knife and took shoes, jewelry and the 44-year-old man's wallet.
Police were notified, and officers found the two suspects a short time later. The stolen property was recovered.

September 15, 2009 - 20:31 ET by Army BratI am neither geneticist nor bigot. You would lose your bet. However, the fact that Obama is in fact a Mulatto seems to have upset you. Is his "Blackness" of any consequence when it comes down to it? For that matter, is his "Whiteness"(?) of any consequence? No. But you make it so.
I was raised in a Military Household. My parents taught me to judge men by their actions, by their words and deeds, not the color of their skin. I will not attempt to defend myself against your unwarranted and bigoted accusation.
I state a simple fact and you suggest that I am bigoted.
I suggest that you are one of the many "Racers" out there. Attempting to make racists and bigots out of anyone that does not lick the boots of the Messiah.
Sorry. That dog won't hunt.

My point is that Obama can pass for black, but not white.
For some reason you feel it necessary to get into fractions.
I don't think it's necessary and certainly not helpful.

Cool...
September 15, 2009 - 22:15 ET by Army BratI don't go from site to site bringing this up. It is in fact the first time I've brought it up. I didn't really think it was of any real consequence. Have I missed something? Is Mulatto now a racist word? I've missed stuff before but...
I had seen this subject come up elsewhere and there was no fecal storm. The subjects of Bigotry and Racism did not come up. Come to think about it...that was about 6 or 7 months ago.
Guess the Honeymoon is over?..

September 15, 2009 - 22:23 ET by Cool ArrowI just don't see a point to arguing Obama's blackness.
I'm guessing a very high percentage of blacks in this country are not pure descendents of original slaves.
The argument sounds too much like the "One Drop Rule" from a shameful time in our past. To deny Obama's blackness at this point seems too much like revisionism.
Regardless of his race, he's intent on destroying America. That's my problem with him.
LYDSEXICS UNTIE!
I beg to differ
September 15, 2009 - 20:36 ET by nwahsYou are a bigot. You have no dog in the hunt as to what culture Obama identifies with. For you to correct the the path shows you're a meddling old woman or a bigot.Which is it? You're an old woman?

I knew it would come to name calling.
September 15, 2009 - 20:50 ET by Army BratBecause you have nothing else to offer.
Where is the bigotry? I don't get it. you make zero sense.
I grew up in Alaska where racism is not tolerated.
When some racist Bozos moved to our neighboorhood from the lower 48 and tried to bring their racism with them...they encountered a problem. When they tried to start some racially based problems in the parking lot at our High School, they were met not just by the Blacks they were going to try and start crap with...but by me and about 300 other "white boys" that were there to kick theit sorry racist asses inside out.
Count yourself lucky that you can't' call me racist to my face.
You would most certainly wake up with a crowd around you.
islam is a lie and Truth is killing it.
You're right
September 15, 2009 - 21:27 ET by nwahsThere was a better way to discuss that. I don't know you so I can't call you a bigot (Lord knows that never stops anyone from calling me a liberal). I should have stuck to how the post seems rooted in the same bigotry as the one drop laws. I apologize for calling you a bigot, sincerely. I don't agree with you post, but I should not have called you that.

My blood was slowly boiling
September 15, 2009 - 23:19 ET by RescuedByRushMy blood was slowly boiling as I read this portion of the thread, and the associated accusations and rebuttals related to bigorty. Backwards Shawn, I've been reading this site for over a year, and have to admit that I can't figure you out. But, I'm glad you recanted your accusation, and I'm glad that it was accepted.
"Bigot" and "racist" are thrown out as epiteths too often. There are clear lines of demarcation in assessing one's bigotry, or lack thereof. It's the old geezer that laments the arrival of black footbal players at Notre Dame that crosses that line; not the anonymous poster at NB that leaves his word out there, free to be twisted.
I seldom see true bigotry expressed in posts at NB. All too often I see it interpreted into posts. In this case, I'm glad to see that it was, properly, abandonned and reconciled.
Idle thought: I'm always surprised at how much traffic/comments come from the entries at NB that have a race theme.

Yeah, I know. Doesn't
September 15, 2009 - 23:43 ET by RescuedByRushYeah, I know. Doesn't make it less tiring, though. When you want to leave it behind, it's frustrating to have to keep talking about it. While it's necessary to defend yourself, it feels like a death march. "Some of my best friends are..." and, "I went to school with..." are just defensive postures against bogus accusations.
Sometimes I wonder wether or not just flat ignoring the preposterousness wouldn't be a better strategy.

September 15, 2009 - 20:56 ET by cajun2I do not intend to interfere in your posts but I thought I might inject an entry on "culture". In New Orleans, after slavery ceased, there was a problem with birth records for children fathered by the evil plantation owners. The birth certificates showed race, there was even a formula for that determination. Mulato became part of the record. Over the years, the record keeping has been corrected, of course, and now shows, bi-racial. The terminology stayed in the white and black community but is dying. The bi-racial folks lived isolated and separate from the black and white communities. Not much of an issue today. For instance, Sen. Mary Landrieu is "mulato" but no one even notices. Her father was Mayor of NewOrleans for many years and well respected.Mulatos in New Orleans basically became a third culture in the area. Some of the language, like other traditions, tend to linger in the area. Pardon my lack of historical details but we forget sometimes the origin of parts of our language, culture, and traditions. 'just saying.

The truth about Rush's addiction
September 15, 2009 - 17:12 ET by nkviking75"So as Rush’s world has steadily crumbled, it’s no wonder he allegedly had to turn to prescription pain killers...."
Nancy, dear, Rush "turned to prescription pain killers" after spinal surgery. Unfortunately he became addicted. But he faced it and went to rehab, and by all accounts it was successful.
Instead of practicing psychology, try seeing a psychologist.

From what I just read, she sounds like another angry lib who's desperate to sound like she has something important to say, but isn't even smart enough to realize she's just repeating the same thing that has been in the liberal websites for the last week. Nothing worse then a hasbeen trying to sound important.

September 15, 2009 - 17:32 ET by celator"So as Rush’s world has steadily crumbled..."
Well, Nancy (may I call you Nancy?), Rush's world didn't collapse in 2003. I'm sure you were disappointed that your statement didn't come to pass. What do they call that, "wishful desires"? Can't build your life on that, Nancy.
You may not have have kept up, but we are pleased to tell you that Rush is thriving. He's doing better than ever and more success lies ahead of him. Not many people know who you are or have even heard of you. That's not a problem Rush has.
Nancy, you have to face reality: you are basically a media nobody, and that's all you'll ever be.
Oh, one more thing, Nancy. As you prepare to paint the Joe Wilson episode in racial tones, remember this: Obama is as much a slave to George Soros and other radical nutjobs as black slaves picking cotton ever were to THEIR masters.
Chew on that for awhile.
No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.
How Is It
September 15, 2009 - 17:42 ET by BondPlainBondAlmost the whole damn liberal contingent is incapable of admitting Obama lied? They completely skip over that FACT.
I'm glad Wilson stood up. Even a soldier on the battlefield has the duty to disobey orders that are morally and ethically wrong.
When the President of the United States stands before the Congress and the American people and deliberately lies (no muddy waters to sift through, it's all (not) in the bill); something had to be done. I was yelling "LIAR!" as Obama was speaking. Wilson was my echo.

"Petition for redress of grievances" is now "craziness."
September 16, 2009 - 08:58 ET by Indiana Joe"... with a dash of this summer’s town hall meeting craziness."
Yep, that's what it is. People go to "town hall" meetings and voice displeasure over the ruling elite, and it's dismissed as "craziness."
Wake up, people! We have no voice in the running of our country. We shouldn't expect one. We should just shut up, sit down, and do as we're told.
Like good little National Socialists:
"By demagogic appeals to latent hatred and violence ["get in their face," and "call them out," for instance?],... the party gained a considerable following. Its inner councils were swelled by... frustrated intellectuals... and by [an] element of riffraff... while its public adherents were heavily drawn from the depressed lower middle class. [They] minimized the socialist features of the program. National Socialism made its appeal not to an economic class but rather to the insecure and power-hungry elements of society." - Encyclopedia.com
"Of those men who have overturned the liberties of republics, the greatest number have begun their career by paying an obsequious court to the people, commencing demagogues and ending tyrants." - Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 1
