Barack Obama and Katie Couric, CBS During an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric on Tuesday, President Obama defended the administration’s handling of the economy: "nobody...anticipated that in the first three months, we would lose 700,000 jobs per month...the severity and the depth of the recession was something that, you know, really exceeded everybody's expectations."

However, on the February 6 Evening News, prior to the passage of the Obama stimulus package, correspondent Anthony Mason told Couric: "The size of the job losses last month surprised even most economists. And even if we begin to get a recovery later this year, many say the unemployment rate will continue to rise into next year, topping out somewhere north of 9 percent."

Obama made his claim after Couric asked about the current 9.5% unemployment rate: "Your administration projected that with the stimulus package, as you know, unemployment could be kept under 8%. Well, that was then, this is now." After Obama argued that the job loss "exceeded everybody’s expectations" Couric failed to point out the fact that she had reported on such expectations earlier in the year.

Here is a transcript of the exchange:

KATIE COURIC: Mr. President, if the stimulus plan isn't really working – at least for now – why should Americans sign off on spending billions of dollars on health care reform?

BARACK OBAMA: I disagree that the stimulus plan is not working. Think about what – where we've been, and since that time we have stabilized the financial markets. We have created the ability of businesses to borrow again. We have prevented thousands of layoffs in states all across the country. Are we where we need to be? Absolutely not. Would things be much worse if we had not put the recovery package in place? Absolutely.

COURIC: Later outside, I asked the President about the current unemployment rate, which is at 9.5%. Your administration projected that with the stimulus package, as you know, unemployment could be kept under 8%.

OBAMA: Yeah.

COURIC: Well, that was then, this is now.

OBAMA: Yeah, we blew through that pretty quickly. And I think that, you know, in fairness to my economists, nobody – when we were first sworn in – anticipated that in the first three months, we would lose 700,000 jobs per month. So, you know, I think the severity and the depth of the recession was something that, you know, really exceeded everybody's expectations.

COURIC: Vice President Biden said you had, in fact, misread the economy, so-

OBAMA: Well, that's what he was referring to, was-

COURIC: Right. But who's to say you're reading the tea leaves accurately now?

OBAMA: Meaning what?

COURIC: In the future when you make these projections and estimates and cost savings. I mean, it's a pretty dicey proposition, don't you think, to predict economics into the future?

OBAMA: Well – well, if – if what you're saying is – is that economists are often wrong, you're absolutely right about that. And you know – but that can't be a rationale for inaction.

The June fed report

said unemployment would be over 11% for at least 4 years, and only turn down in five years.

did not exceed everyone's,

did not exceed everyone's, and those expectations/forecasts will continue to rise with Cap&Tax (job loss so certain that the bill contains subsidies for those that will lose their jobs due to the legislation) and the rest of these Keynsian (now debunked) spending programs.

But I am impressed with journalists using terms as "you know" and "really" and "like"

Now we can't give her a

Now we can't give her a hard time for talking like that because then Sarah will def. never have chance.

             I'm

I'm no expert, but I saw this coming when the govt. bailed out the banks. Not every bank, just the ones the elected officials had stock in. WE are in this mess because of the govt.. Now, the govt. wants the people to "sacrifice" to fix the problem. How the hell do they think WE can fix it, when no one has a job to pay the taxes? I don't hear any polititian offering to take less pay. I don't even hear of a freeze on their pay. Unemployment is through the roof, and all they can think of is spending more money WE don't have.

Good grief, he cant even

Good grief, he cant even answer the softballs Couric pitches without spinning.

You beat me Snappy!

I was going to say "How can you strike out in a slow pitch softball game" but you got there first!

"Obama lied, transparency died!" Michelle Malkin

IIRC

Wasn't there a petition signed by 400-500 economists who predicted exactly what's happening? It didn't exceed 'everybody's' expectations.

Which segues into this. One of the latest 'talking points' which ticks me off is "14,000 people a day are losing their health insurance". What they fail to mention is most of these 14,000 are losing their health insurance because they're LOSING THEIR JOBS!!!

Apparently, Obama actually

Apparently, Obama actually believed that his mere inauguration was going to make companies start hiring. If he didn't think it was going to get this bad, why did he spend the campaign talking about the economy in terms on par with the Great Depression?

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

I guess

no one got his memo either.  Actually, if you spend almost 2 years telling everyone that this economy is on a par with the "Great Depression", why should you be surprised that unemployment is on a par with said depression.  Guess he thought that once the unicorns began dancing and being "post-racial" set in, everyone would get a job, two cars in their garage and a chicken in every pot.  Or, at least his followers would get their cars and homes paid off and free gas for life.

Obama

Didn't he just say in effect , don't blame me? It was just a short while ago he was saying "trust me"? Well how are we supposed to respond to someone who has revealed through his failure ; "don't depend on me" ?

The depth of this administrations disgraceful performance is there for everyone to see and they are squirming like ants under a magnifying glass. The frantic efforts by the press to spray perfume on this pitiful performance are disgusting.

Chocolate rations

This sounds a lot like "1984" and how the chocolate rations were supposed to be raised to 30 grams, but then were only raised to 20 grams and everything at the Ministry of Truth was manipulated so that Big Brother had always predicted that chocolate rations would be raised to 20 grams and everyone was supposed to praise Big Brother for raising chocolate rations 20 grams.

"....that can't be a

"....that can't be a rationale for inaction."

This is the key.  Everything and anything is a rationale for government action even though the best thing that could happen would be government inaction, except in those areas to which it is constitutionally limited.

This putz doesn't care about unemployment, in fact the more the merrier - because that justifies more government action.

That was back when it was

That was back when it was still the "Bush economy."  Doesn't count.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Does he want recovery?

Let's not assume that the Bamster wants the recession to end. If it ends and the economy rebounds significantly, his 'useful disaster' is over. He won't be able to panic the population with visions of doom and gloom if we don't do exactly as he says. Perhaps that's why they created a worthless 'stimulus' bill, to purposely waste money knowing it would not do anything, while conveniently rewarding their cronies.

Or, more cynically, what if his real intent is to break the USA, Cloward-Piven or original ACORN type stuff? If that is what he intends, then he also doesn't want a recovery, and he will want runaway inflation.

We don't know this man, where the hell he came from, what he believes or what his real intentions are. Why do we always give him the benefit of the doubt? He does seem to hate America; isn't it then safe to assume he wants to destroy what he hates?

What people fail to recall is that

people started losing jobs at about the same time he started campaigning. Once McCain was picked by the dems to run against 0buma, it got even worse. The business people were able to determine that 0buma was probably gonna be elected, and they started getting ready for it before the election happened. Half or more of the issues thou were in my opinion, a very large and widely encommpassing plan to hurt the economy enough to allow the "change" message to work on the government educated dumbmasses. Only problem that 0bumas handlers didnt see coming was how fast it would go downhill, and how much people really didnt want to be part of what they were promising. The TARP crap was no help, but Paulson (a former Goldman-Sachs man), convinced Bush to get that going. Why else would Paulson have been kept in the position he was in, if he was not already working for 0bama and his handlers?

...how about we have a recall vote on Senator/Congressperson so and so....
