JFK Jr., CBS At the top of Thursday’s CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith marked the ten-year anniversary of the death of JFK Jr. by declaring: "He was such an icon in the city [New York], and we're going to remember JFK Jr. a little bit later on this morning."

In the later segment, Smith described Kennedy as "a paparazzi magnet" who was "crowned the sexiest man alive." Smith went on to exclaim: "Now ten years after his tragic death, the public fascination continues. People magazine has just released these never before seen photos."

In addition to touting Kennedy’s tabloid popularity, Smith alluded to his potential as a political player: "John attended private school and then headed to Brown University and NYU Law School, but he did not follow in his father's footsteps." The segment featured Peter Canellos, editor of the book ‘Last Lion: The Rise and Fall of Ted Kennedy,’ who observed: "So many people who, you know, remember the Kennedy presidency always assumed that someday he would go into politics."

Smith then turned to the broader legacy of the Kennedy family: "And with the ailing health of his uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy, the family's legacy is being remembered." Canellos added: "Ted Kennedy has carried the family torch for 40 years, and there's a real question now whether there’ll be another Kennedy family member who can step forward and be a national leader."

Following the taped segment, Smith remarked that "it was like a pall that was cast over the city" when JFK Jr. died. Co-host Maggie Rodriguez went further: "Well, that was the case everywhere, all over the country." Smith continued: "He was such a presence in New York City, and you know, it was kind of made almost sort of a joke. It was in Seinfeld. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss's character was always talking about...wanting to run into John F. Kennedy Jr. or whatever. But he was here." Rodriguez added: "And that was the great thing. People did run into him, and he was just like a – a regular guy...Such a loss."

Here is the full transcript of the segment:

7:01AM TEASE:

HARRY SMITH: I find it hard to believe it was ten years ago tonight that JFK Jr.'s plane crashed. He and his wife and her sister died. He was such an icon in the city, and we're going to remember JFK Jr. a little bit later on this morning.

7:30AM TEASE:

SMITH: Coming up in this half hour, it's hard to believe, but it has been ten years since John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a plane crash. We're going to take a look back at his life and legacy.

7:37AM TEASE:

SMITH: Up next, ten years later, we'll remember the life and still shocking death of John F. Kennedy Jr.

7:40AM SEGMENT:

HARRY SMITH: Ten years ago today, John F. Kennedy Jr. died when the plane he was piloting to a family wedding crashed. Here's a look back at his life and legacy. On a hot July night a decade ago, Americans learned JFK Jr. had died.

DAN RATHER: Once again, the Kennedy family is steeling itself tonight to deal with tragedy.

SMITH: The son of Camelot was killed in a plane crash, with his wife Carolyn and her sister Lauren. The man, once a paparazzi magnet and crowned the sexiest man alive, was dead at 38. Born in 1960, the son of President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. spent his early years living in White House with his older sister Caroline.

WALTER CRONKITE: President Kennedy died.

SMITH: After his father was assassinated in 1963, the family moved to New York City, where John attended private school and then headed to Brown University and NYU Law School, but he did not follow in his father's footsteps.

JOHN F. KENNEDY JR.: Ladies and gentlemen, meet George.

SMITH: In 1995 he decided to start his own magazine.

KENNEDY: You know, I've been lucky to have a lot of opportunities and feel very fortunate that there is this energy associated with it.

PETER CANELLOS [EDITOR, LAST LION: THE RISE AND FALL OF TED KENNEDY]: So many people who, you know, remember the Kennedy presidency always assumed that someday he would go into politics.

SMITH: Now ten years after his tragic death, the public fascination continues. People magazine has just released these never before seen photos. And with the ailing health of his uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy, the family's legacy is being remembered.

CANELLOS: Ted Kennedy has carried the family torch for 40 years, and there's a real question now whether there’ll be another Kennedy family member who can step forward and be a national leader.

SMITH: Living here was so interesting because it was like a pall that was cast over the city when that happened.

MAGGIE RODRIGUEZ: I can imagine.

SMITH: It just was so, sort of, unimaginable.

RODRIGUEZ: Well, that was the case everywhere, all over the country.

SMITH: And it was – but he was such a presence in New York City, and you know, it was kind of made almost sort of a joke. It was in Seinfeld. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss's character was always talking about-

RODRIGUEZ: Elaine.

SMITH: Yeah exactly, talking about wanting to run into John F. Kennedy Jr. or whatever. But he was here. I mean, people said-

RODRIGUEZ: And that was the great thing. People did run into him, and he was just like a – a regular guy.

SMITH: Yeah. Ten years goes by quickly, doesn't it?

RODRIGUEZ: Such a loss.

SMITH: Mm-hmn.

Now why didn't they mention

Now why didn't they mention the intellectual JFK jr?  Ooops, can't let slip that he FAILED the NY Bar exam TWICE before he passed on the third try.  And his magazine was a failure once people started losing interest in his celebrity.

The Obama Administration: THE most fiscally irresponsible Administration EVER

what was so great about JFK jr.?

was he known for his forays for drugs in harlem, just ask the nypd.what about his super ability in instument navigation, must have had some  medicinal assistance for his last flight, up turned out to be down.

Uncooperative, possibly right wing reactionary weather

Kennedy died and killed TWO innocent girls when he arrogantly flew in bad weather. But then again, didn't that damn weather realize it was dealing with a Kennedy? It was supposed to, just like everybody and everything else, change for him. Gravity should also be investigated for failure to suspend itself for a Kennedy. Hey, his Uncle Ted has, as far as we know, killed only one girl, so John John is one up on Teddy. Cousin Mike Skaekel is tied with Ted but may have a chance to up his score when paroled. 2nd rate relative Sargent Schriver is running a poor 3rd with no confirmed kills, the lousy slacker.

Ditto!

What a family!

Jackie Kennedy was the ONLY one in the whole lot who had any class and she worked her whole life to bring her kids up to NOT be a typical Kennedy. The rest of the Kennedy clan is trailer trash, up to and including Teddy (Teddy has killed more people with his car than I have with my handgun!). Even though she wasn't able to change her kid's screwed-up view of politics, they were at least not an embarassment like so many of the others (William Kennedy Smith).

The Kennedys are

The Kennedys are the Corleones of politics.

(No offense meant, Don Vito)

Or maybe the Tattaglias....

Actually, the Kennedys were

Actually, the Kennedys were the Corleones of Boston in the 1920's and 1930's.  There wasn't a drop of illegal liquor in that city they had not gotten a cut from.  Joe Kennedy = Boss of Irish Mafia.

I couldn't tell you the

I couldn't tell you the number of regular guys I know who also crashed their personal planes while flying to Martha's Vineyards. I am sure pretty much EVERYBODY has a normal, average person like that in their lives.

Not as Bad as Ron Reagan, Jr.

While somewhat of a lightweight, JFK, Jr. was an intellectual superstar compared to Ron Reagan, Jr., an absolute moron who lives off his father's name. There will be a three-day celebration when that loser croaks.

I thought an icon was a

I thought an icon was a religious figurine.

Icon

Or at the very least an icon is something on my computer desktop...

In all seriousness, how was he an icon of anything?  He was somebody's son and nothing else. Yes, he was pretty good looking, unlike most of his Kennedy cousins, but he was hardly an icon.

Iconography

You are correct. The Kennedy's ARE religious Icons. To the socialists that is.

"Now ten years after his

"Now ten years after his tragic death, the public fascination
continues. People magazine has just released these never before seen
photos."

Uh, no, it's the media fascination that continues.

They are so disappointed that he never went into politics.  They envisioned him as the Return to Camelot.

What IS it with these people, that they seem to have an inborn need to be governed by Kennedys?????

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

Exactly, mb...

The heyday of the Kennedys ended 40 years ago with the death of RFK. They need to let it go and move on.

"Look girls, now with no hands."

I can still remember repeating the tasteless jokes and God save you if there was a liberal in the room.

JFK Jr

He did the best he could...what a horrible thing to have to grow up in a fishbowl with all of those expectations on his shoulders.

The media ought to just leave this alone, okay, it's been ten years, enough said.

I hope he fails, too.

I can't be bothered to look

I can't be bothered to look up this guy...

But if I recall correctly, wasn't he a drug addict, and an irresponsible egomaniac who killed three other people because he wouldn't listen to anyone?

Hey -- that IS a Democrat qualification for President.

That and the fact that deep down they just long for a divine Royal Family to produce a King who will tell them what to do. Bit sad, really.

Obama Lied... Jobs Died.

Royal Indulgences

"deep down they just long for a divine Royal Family to produce a King who will tell them what to do."

Don't forget their desire for the other accouterments that comes with any Kingdom,  namely: Titles (Liberals LOVE their titles, like Doctor This, Professor That, Senator "I think I earned that" Whomever), Influential Government Positions (Barron's or Czars, what's the difference? Liberals love them all), Subservient Government Positions (Interns or Pages, anyone?), Royal Decrees (Government Mandates),even Conscription (Pick up your pitchfork and follow me!  And, no, you don't get a choice!)!  There's a lot more things about Kingdoms the Liberals love, like total control over public and private finances (Yet another financial regulatory department suggest by Obama, remember?), life and death health decisions (also called Public Choice Health Care), ect., ect., ect.

All their complains about "Imperialistic America" is nothing more than longing for just that very thing.

A Regular Liberal Icon

It's rather hilarious that the very same liberals who bemoan "Imperialist" America call one of their own a "Prince."  Excuse me, liberal hypocrites, but a Prince is a title used in an imperialist society and NOT a democratic society.

So, hypocrites, why do you insist on calling him a "Prince" if your so dead set against Empires?  I think the answer is obvious: most liberals really DO want America to be an Empire, with one person in control of everything, as long as that Emperor is a Liberal, of course.

the kennedy circle is now closed

even mother dearest was found to be a trollop, jumping on bobby,s bones after jfk died. have they no shame, no wonder ethel drank so much.

He was remembered as an

He was remembered as an "icon" and a "regular guy"?  That's funny, I remember him as a famous for being famous, starlet-dating, failed magazine publisher who made a touching speech at his mother's funeral, but couldn't seem to pass that tricky bar exam.  Perhaps he was a nice enough guy (especially for a Kennedy), but embracing the whole "Sexiest Man Alive" thing sort of diminishes his serious bona fides.  Oh, and let's not forget that he took two other lives with him.

"Son of Camelot".  What's

"Son of Camelot".  What's wrong with these people?

This guy on his own would have been a nobody...as is true with most of the Kennedy clan-their money, their political influence, etc.

This is exactly the kind of family the Libtards hate; powerful, rich, elitist...but as long as they're on their side they're A-OK!

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Wow!

I was always taught not to speak ill of the dead. I find about 95% of the comments on this thread vile and just sad.
I'm so gald all you saints can pass judgement on a man whom you've never met.

Cheers,
Chuck

I'm sure you were,

I'm sure you were, sweetheart.  And I'll remember how respectful you are to the dead the next time I hear one of you drones attacking Richard Nixon, Jerry Fallwell, Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, Strom Thurmond, Bill Buckley...

In other words, pardon me if I don't give a s*** about your fake moral outrage.  Cheers, Chuck.

kennedy devotion

I don't have anything against this family personally; I don't even know them. But I really can't understand the fascination and the blind devotion.

John Jr. was famous due to his family; he didn't cure cancer, end world hunger or contribute anything to the world that makes a difference in anyone's life.  Why the drooling and worshipping 10 years after his death?  People die everyday who have contributed more to society and you never hear anything about them. They don't make a good story, I guess.

I think it's fine to admire someone for a good reason, but what was the obsession for Jr.? Yes, he was a cute kid and it was a terrible tragedy to lose a parent at such a young age. My father died when I was 7, so I know how hard that can be.  But there has to be more to your life than that. He was good looking and rich, and didn't really need anything more than that to get along.

Many of my friends ended up hating him

for what his stupidity did to Civil Aviation. More regulations coming out to make things harder for people who didn't have their heads up their @sses, and even more public opinion against civil aviation when private pilots were already experiencing massive discrimination in things from insurance to landing fees to fuel availability and cost.

Yet another in a line of men whose activities killed others around them. At least this time a Kennedy didn't escape scott-free. Still left it up to many many others to deal with the consequences.
