Open Thread: Obama AG Holder Rails Against Voter ID... To Audience That Had to Show ID to Get Into Hall

By Ken Shepherd | July 11, 2012 | 10:45

Ken Shepherd's picture

Yesterday in an appearance at the NAACP's annual convention, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder lashed out against voter ID requirements as a form of "poll tax" that threatens to disenfranchise black voters. He insisted that the Obama administration would "not allow political pretexts to disenfranchise American citizens of their most precious right."

He was, of course, warmly and enthusiastically received. But in order for journalists to exercise their "most precious" First Amendment rights to cover the speech, they, you guessed it, had to have valid, government-issued photo ID on top of their press credentials, reported Townhall.com News Editor Katie Pavlich yesterday:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Earlier today, Attorney General Eric Holder addressed the NAACP Nation Convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. What did media need in order to attend? That's right, government issued photo identification (and a second form of identification too!), something both Holder and the NAACP stand firmly against when it comes to voting. Holder's DOJ is currently suing Texas for "discriminatory" voter ID laws. From the press release:

All media must present government-issued photo I.D. (such as a driver’s license) as well as valid media credentials. Members of the media must RSVP to receive press credentials at http://action.naacp.org/page/s/registration. For security purposes, media check-in and equipment set up must be completed by 7:45 a.m. CDT for an 8:00 a.m. CDT security sweep. Once the security sweep is completed, additional media equipment will NOT be permitted to enter and swept equipment will NOT be permitted to exit.

Ironically, NAACP President Ben Jealous railed against voter ID just before Holder took the stage.

Presidential candidate and Secret Service protectee Mitt Romney will address the NAACP convention today. Given that Secret Service security requirements often entail checking photo ID (and getting the Social Security number) of attendees of a protectee's public events, it's highly likely that convention-goers as well as media members will be required to furnish ID this morning.

A few months ago, our friends at MRCTV hit the streets of Washington, D.C., which, suffice to say is very liberal and very Democratic. They talked to African-American voters about the question of voter ID, and most of those asked said they support the measure.

The liberal media will never report this obvious hypocrisy so they have nothing to worry about.

It's so obvious that this is all about allowing illegal immigrants and dead people to vote. These are the ONLY groups of people over 18 in our society that don't have a valid photo ID.

My Congressional District was Redistricted

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 11:19am.

(And I'll whine one more time that we lost Allen West to a district further north).

The "Voters at Blonde's House" got a very large brochure yesterday, with all of the information for our August primary, including very clear requirements about the ID required to vote.

I'll try to take a picture of it and post it in the Disqus section later today.

The last three or four times I've voted, they ask for the photo ID, and then I must recite my address while they check my driver's license.

About Col. West that is. Glad to hear that you have to show ID to vote.
I bet your district is NOT in the greater Miami metropolitian area though.

I am beyond sad....but it was great while it lasted.

We are in the Broward/Palm Beach district.....which flows over both of the 2000 Florida election debacles....Palm Beach (democrat Teresa LaPore, Election supervisor) and her "butterfly ballots", and of course, Broward County.....home of the "hangin' chad".

Down Miami way is where Alcee Hastings is from. Little Deb's is from Broward/Dade district.

Who is ready for some Football?

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 11:14am.

A little something to get us in the mood.

How about your team's biggest rivalries.?

For my Gators, there are a couple of SEC teams which alway loom large....Bama & LSU, although they're not "traditional" rivals.   But they are fierce teams, and if we're not in the hunt to make it to the big dance, they are always my second favorite teams to make it.

Dave's Bulldogs....well, they are a different story, the "traditional" rivals.  And the record of late, is 18-4 good guys, so although they finally got a lick in last year, and we'll hear them bark like mad dogs about JORTS and everything but their 2+ decade old record against us, they're back in the pound this year.  I hope we beat them worse than Michael Vick.

Then there's FSU.  Even when the Gators have a bad year, if we kick the clowns, we are happy (well, some of us are).

I'm afraid the face of college ball is going to change, fast, and not necessarily for the better.  The SEC now has two more schools (truly, their admittance made no sense to me).  And a playoff of sorts.

GO GATORS!!!!!!!!!!

Being a life-long Gator fan, I don't see LSU or Bama as rivals. They are just annoyances that come and go. Our rivals are, have always been, and always will be, FSUcks and Georgia.

But in all fairness, we have to give the devils their due. I wouldn't call LSU & Bama annoyances....I'd call them serious-as-a-heart-attack bad-*** teams. Auburn I'd call an annoyance.

LSU and Bama are great

Submitted by Bruzilla on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 12:12pm.

LSU and Bama are great teams... now... but when they go into their down cycles, who in Gator Nation gives a crap about them? Some people always want to think their team is a rival of the Gators when they are competitive with the Gators and getting a lot of attention, but that doesn't make them a rival. Once LSU and Bama start dropping behind, as all teams do from time to time, there will be little interest in their games against the Gators, but even a .500 FSUcks or Georgia team game is important to Gators fans. :)

This Holder post is one of

Submitted by Bruzilla on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 11:27am.

This Holder post is one of those stories that just makes Conservatives look really, really, bad. There is no Constitutionally-protected right to attend a Holder speech, but there is one to vote; so trying to equate needing a photo ID to listen to Holder to needing a photo ID to vote is just plain stupid folks. Sadly, we have our share of the two-smart-by-half crowd who like to see hypocrisy everywhere, even when it doesn't actually exist.

"Hypocrisy" is for the selected few ...

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 11:39am.

So "freedom of the press" is no longer a Constitutional right?

Oh, I see ... it's a right but the press has to prove its legitimate before exercising that right?

And people who claim to be legal voters don't.

And a GOVERNMENT official making a political speech at a PRIVATE function doesn't count.

And people who see hypocrisy are the real hypocrites.

Oh, I see ... this is different.

My point is there is no right

Submitted by Bruzilla on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 12:23pm.

My point is there is no right to go listen to Holder, so asking for photo ID to go in there and denying access to anyone without an ID is perfectly acceptable as no one is being denied their right. We do have a protected right to vote, so denying someone that right for any reason is a vastly different situation. The same applies to bogus arguments about equating how you need a photo ID to cash a check, apply for social benefits (which most of the poor/disadvantaged people who voter ID laws are alleged to disenfranchise get, so if they don't have an ID to vote what are they using to get their benefits?), or do any other non-protected activity to voting.

Poor and disadvantaged ...

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 1:36pm.

You're repeating yourself and ignoring my response, using phrases like "bogus arguments" without proving they are bogus, so that must mean "checkmate".

Peope have a "right" to bear arms too so, in your world, everyone must be allowed to obtain them without ID and background checks (even drug cartels?) and, presumably, without cost if they are poor/disadvantaged.

The ideal voter for liberals woud be:

a) Someone who speaks no English.
b) Someone who understands no issues.
c) Someone who votes early and often, again and again and again, for the "D" candidate.

All of which is facilitated by eliminating any requirement to prove you are actually and legally eligible to vote.

Nice racket.

I appears to me that our esteemed Secretary of State is in the process of transforming herself into Brunhillary Clinton.

I mean, come on!  Can she look any more like a 1950's era Politburo commissar than she has become.

She has the fat, happy look of a despotic leader in a country where the citizens are starving; the puffy face of having too much vodka; the 40 weight slicked back hairdo; and the worse selection of clothes since Chairman Mao!

Who dresses this "woman" every day?

Is she trying to out-ugly Hugo Chavez or something?

Maybe, just maybe, she is getting ready to serve in the Obama Dynasty of the USSA after the election?  She sho be ugly nuff, yo.

Speaking of Dead Voters

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 6:38pm.

Up yours, Eric. Florida finds over 50,000 dead on the voter rolls, more than 5,000 in Broward County (home of the hangin' chad) alone. And the Broward GOP has identified many more.

The spotlight's been on dead voters since the Florida Department of State used a new state law to get access to 90 million files about people who've died across America. The results, issued in recent weeks to Florida's 67 counties: 51,966 dead people still listed as active voters.

Thank you, Gov. Rick Scott, and Fla. AG Pam Bondi, for sticking to your guns, to ensure that I am not disenfranchised.
