S.E. Cupp Mindlessly Furthers Liberal Meme That Evangelicals 'Don't Even Like' Catholics

By Ken Shepherd | March 14, 2012 | 13:04

Ken Shepherd's picture

With conservative friends like these, who needs liberals?

Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but token conservative S.E. Cupp on today's Now with Alex Wagner blurted out on air, unprompted, the sort of ignorant, bigoted view of conservative evangelicals that you'd expect from a liberal panelist.

"Evangelicals don't even like Catholics!" the atheist pundit interrupted while fellow panelist Karen Finney was giving her take on exit polling results from the March 12 primaries in Alabama and Mississippi. Finney was saying that, if it were possible for there to be an "evangelical Catholic," Santorum would be it, given the Catholic ex-senator's ability to appeal to the social conservatism of evangelicals.

Cupp's unprompted attack on southern evangelicals is, of course, absolutely ludicrous. Indeed, Democrats tried unsuccessfully in 2007 to sink Bobby Jindal's gubernatorial run by running attack ads saying he was a Catholic who hated Protestants. That failed miserably and the former Hindu and Catholic convert Jindal won 54 percent of the votes cast for governor. Last November, Jindal cruised to reelection with 66 percent of the vote.

What's more, last night's primaries saw nearly 2/3rds of Mississippians and Alabamans voting for Catholic candidates Gingrich and Santorum. "In Mississippi, 83 percent of the electorate describes themselves as evangelicals while in Alabama that number is 79 percent," Washington Post's Chris Cillizza noted.

Cupp is entitled to her opinion, but it's a ludicrous one given that pesky little thing we call facts.

I don't really think of S.E.

I don't really think of S.E. Cupp when it comes to religion. She is an atheist as I recall. However, it's strange she would be this prejudicial when she has come to the defense of theists in the past.

Submitted by NeoKong on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 2:49pm.

She is never funny and her opinions are usually something I already read three days ago or are just common knowledge.
In other words I never hear anything original from her.
For example.
When I listen to Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham or Michelle Malkin I actually learn something I did not know.
Their content is original.
With Cupp I just hear something I already knew or she tells me something somebody else said or wrote.
She seems nice enough but she falls flat as a pundit.

Submitted by celator on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 2:52pm.

Cupp is just employing an old tactic here. Instigate conflicts and arguments among your enemies, in this case, those who oppose Obama's agenda. Get them balkanized so they cannot grow into a single, focused entity which could undermine Obama and the liberal agenda. Old stuff. They did it with the Tea Party.

I have to agree with some of what Cupp is saying here.

As a new Catholic, some of my evangelical co-workers refer to us Catholics as 'You Catholics'

Also most, but not all, do not even consider Catholics as 'Christians'.

I have heard this first hand from some of them. Some of them really do consider the Roman Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon. I kid you not.

But I have some very good evangelical friends who are willing to march arm-in-arm in the streets with Catholics to protest Obama's anti-faith policies.

that I stopped going to church as a teen. I come from a catholic family, and some of my relatives are still catholic, but my mom started going to protestant churches when I was a kid. At first, I bought into the judgementalism and bigotry against the catholic church, but as I got older and learned more about religion, and catholicism, the bigotry really soured me against church, and so I stopped going. Saying catholics aren't christians is ludicrous, and I never really understood how anyone could make that claim.

It comes down to small government.

Submitted by Tjexcite on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 3:18pm.

To small government.

Do you want someone who has the constitution in one hand and a bible in the other so they can club you it. Or one with a constitution in one had and a bible in there shirt pocket as they need not refer to it with every choice they make. OR one who is standing on the constitution and no bible to be found.

Generally catholics do not like in you face religion. Faith is a private mater that happen on Sunday and that is about it. Generally the Roman Catholics listen to the pope and priest but come Sunday night they have forgot his noon sermon. But they still follow a strong moral compass that they live by with out making everyone else follow they same moral compass. As in libertarian. Keep you faith out of my hair and I will keep my faith away from you.

Generally evangelicals walk with a bible in their hand all the time. They wake up they pray, they eat they pray. Everything they do is around the glory of god. They do not need a priest to tell they how to be good and do the mass service. They can have one in a parking lot with nothing but a king James bible. Every choice they make is done after long prayer as if one needs constant guidance to keep the moral compass. And as such Generally they see it as their purpose to get in others hair and make you see they light and glory of god.

This does rub many the wrong way. As generally some " Evangelicals do not like Catholics" as they as fallen from the faith as they are not "bible thumbing spreed the gospel everywhere" type of people as they bible tells them but as the history of the roman catholic church does not tell them that. To pray it has to be at church and only done with a priest with times of old in Latin.

It all comes down to; do you want someone who after 4 years, people are still not sure what faith he is, or someone who has private faith but know it is strong and will not make government as arm of that faith. Or someone who sees government as a means to restore the falling faith of America.

Bottom line is MANY of these people voted for Santorum because of his religion.

MANY of these same people will vote for Romney in November AGAINST Obysmal.

That's all I give a damn about.

I also have no problem with Cupp and other Conservatives going on these networks at all.

Newsbusters MISSED her on Morning Joe yesterday a.m. when she schooled Alex Wagner on Obysmal not being responsible for the NEW drilling in this country and the smackdown was EPIC.

Wagner was mocking the Republicans as being factless on drilling and that drilling was up and CUPP SLAMMED HER IMMEDIATELY that the whole answer was flat out BS.

The War against Catholics*

Submitted by cajun2 on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 4:10pm.

If you have read Saul Alinsky, this new attack against Catholics should not be a surprise. What is sad is that so many people do NOT understand that this fight is a war against all religions. They just picked on Catholics first and too many people are foolishly joining in the fray.

Look at what Obama has done.

He began and still foments racial divide in this country where we had once made great strides to improve that part of our society. He has put us into groups, Christians, gays, blacks, women, bigoted southerners, greenies against the evil oil business. Then he divides the "rich" against the "poor" except the rich ones who support his plan of socialism. Of course those idiots do not realize that they would soon lose all their money but the size of their egos have not allowed them a clear picture. Then you have Obama demonizes and downsizing our military. The military is our defense, weaken our defenses, we are then vulnerable from attack from powers outside. Then look at his attacks on the constitution, activists on the Supreme Court and Federal Courts, a DOJ that attacks states rights and the voice of the people in their own states. That is attack from within by the powers in DC.

Van Jones said, top down, inside out, bottom up. THESE actions by the POTUS is what he meant. Create divide amongst the people and you see we can't even decide on an R candidate because one is a mormon, one is a Catholic, one is a past sinner, and one is an isolationist. Mind you, this is how the media portrays OUR candidates, this is how they want US to view our candidates. Never mind fiscal responsibility, never mind balance the budget, nevermind fair taxes, never mind defend our republic, never mind the constitution and states rights, never mind stopping billions flowing to our enemies hands against our wishes.

Dont forget that the graphics of conservatives has been created by the media as old white men who hate women and blacks. This is why they could not allow someone like Herman Caine and Alan West to even be heard let alone have power. As well as the fact that liberals cannot comprehend a black conservative.

Apologize for the accidental burning of a Koran but put Obama's face on the American flag. Allow Native Americans rights seperate from other Americans, like the right to kill the Bald Eagle. Encourage abortion, make it difficult for married couples by increasing THEIR taxes and lower dependent deductions but fight for gays to marry..

The purpose of all of these actions is to create divisiveness, conflict, group rights rather than rights and freedoms for all equally.

And damn if it ain't working.

Kirk Cameron comes to mind as an evangelical I have a great deal of respect for, especially in light of the scrutiny he's under now.

Uh, that's exactly my point. One's religion is not a determining factor for conservative evangelicals in their vote. It's their conservatism. Evangelicals in Ala. and Miss. judged Santorum the most conservative of the options and voted accordingly. They didn't hold their noses and vote for the Catholic Santorum despite a religious prejudice. It didn't factor in at all, is what I'm saying, contra Cupp's claim.

Submitted by cajun2 on Wed, 03/14/2012 - 9:52pm.

Stubborn and endoctrinated comes in all sizes. I well remember being belittled frequently by two young people while in college. They were evangelicals and I, being Catholic, would get "sermons" everyday from these two. One day they told me that I worshipped statues and pagan gods.
So I asked them if they had ever been inside a Catholic Church. They both said yes. Did you see the sculptured art work that represents the stations of the Cross? Did you see the statue of the Blessed Mother? Did you see Christ on the cross? They said yes we did see all of that and that is why we find it strange that you kneel and pray to statues.

Well,, statues represent the important people and events in our religion. For instance, open your wallet, show me photographs. They each took out a family photo of mom, dad, sibs... So, why do you carry these around? Because we love them .....

Exactly, Catholics though are aware that THERE WERE NO CAMERAS 2000 YEARS AGO!!!!

Agree upcountry. We can kneel before an altar, we can sing God's praises, we can drink the wine, or cherish a "wafer". Doesnt matter how we pray or where we pray. Be it in the desert, in a fox hole with bombs bursting, on a hospital bed, or before a coffin bearing a loved one. We can lay on the grass on a beautiful stary night and be filled with awe at the enormity of the universe and equally, how small and insignificant we are. It is what we share that makes us all Christians. Our love of life, morals and values given to us by those much more wise than we.

Fighting over esthetics is childish, hence, our liability in being used to create further divisiveness in our society today. Various religious organizations and their beliefs are not the enemy. Those that wish to bring tyranny over all of us will use whatever method, expound on the size of the hat ( create a conflict) and redesign it to be a yoke.

And bless you mon ami
