AP's LoBianco Laments Financial Penalties Facing Indiana Dem Legislators Who Fail to Show Up for Work

Indiana House of Representatives Democrats could incur fines for every day that they refuse to show up to work. Democratic caucus members have threatened to fail to report for duty as a protest against a Republican bill that would make Indiana a right-to-work state.

Reporting the story for the Associated Press today, Tom LoBianco (available here on Twitter) heavily weighed down his report with sob stories about the potential financial difficulty facing Democrats should they boycott the job they were elected to do (emphasis mine):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

(INDIANAPOLIS) — Indiana's House Democrats are bracing for major financial pain as they begin a third day blocking a bill that would make Indiana the first state in more than a decade to enact right-to-work legislation.

Fines of $1,000 daily for each Democrat could hit Friday, depending on what Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma decides to do with lawmakers who deny him the numbers needed to push through the Republican priority.

But Rep. Vanessa Summers, D-Indianapolis, said that if she can stand on principle against the labor bill and fines that could reach into the tens of thousands of dollars, other Democrats can, too. "I'll be the main one to say 'I cannot stand the fine,'" she said Thursday as Democrats strategized in a private meeting at the Statehouse. "I'm a single mother, I have a son in college, I'm moving in with my mother, but I'm on the right side of history. So whatever happens is going to bless me."

[...]

Inside the 40-member caucus, lawmakers are split over how much they can afford to keep stalling in order to block the bill. Some strode out of Thursday's caucus meeting saying that if they suffered through last year's five-week stay in Urbana, Ill., they can stand on principle now.

But others said new $1,000-a-day fines established by Republicans after last year's walkout have raised the stakes much higher than some can afford. "Last year they were taking my bank account, this year they're taking my home," said Rep. David Cheatham, D-North Vernon. Cheatham was one of three Democrats who has joined Republicans in the House chamber each day. They say they oppose the right-to-work measure but don't agree with the stall tactics.

House Democratic Leader Patrick Bauer said Thursday that Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma told him in a private meeting he would begin fining Democrats on Friday. "It's a significant issue. We think it's another assault against free speech," Bauer said as he walked into the House Democratic caucus meeting.

[...]

The new law levies a fine of $1,000 per day against each lawmaker who sits out more than three days in a row. Republicans established the new penalties after Democrats left the state last year to block the right-to-work measure.

The House Democratic caucus meanwhile opened an account on the Democratic fundraising website ActBlue and sent out an appeal Wednesday on Facebook seeking donations of between $5 and $250. "The Indiana House Democrats NEED YOUR HELP! Please support our caucus as we fight another battle against the Republicans as they try to push RTW legislation through without listening to working Hoosiers," the Democrats wrote in their appeal.

Only once did LoBianco directly quote a Republican, House Speaker Brian Bosma: "We're just counting on folks having some common sense and showing up for work eventually."

Nowhere in his 17-paragraph story did LoBianco get comment from an independent Indiana taxpayer about his or her thoughts on Democrats' unwillingness to show up for work and/or the use of a financial penalty to compel attendance in the legislative chamber.

Messiah's vision

Submitted by Jerry Mack on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 5:56pm.

This is an outrage! People should have the right to not go to work and get paid. What is this country coming too? How dastardly to expect people to actually do their jobs in order to get paid. As soon as the Messiah and the Dims completly socialize our country this evil practice will be stopped.

ROFLMAO

Submitted by Thaiphoon on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 1:55am.

Ryche - with all due respect...

Those aren't even the same damned thing.

Draw a distinction between fleeing the chamber to prevent legislation from passing (Indiana dems)

and...

Not coming back as early as part of the Caucus wants you to from a PLANNED vacation (House GOP).

Add to that distinction that:

a.) The House has been doing quite a bit of work this past year

b.) The House stayed LATE in session after the Senate dems had called it quits last year

c.) The House GOP did not run away. The holiday vacation was planned. The House will be in session next week. As planned.

So, your funny little "sarcasm" is noted, and rejected...

Next time at least try comparing another fruit to an apple, rather than comparing apples to chainsaws like you just tried to do.

They were elected...now do the damned job!

Submitted by drsamherman on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 8:03pm.

There seems to this psychiatrist to be an epidemic of malingering among Democrat state legislators in the upper Midwest. I wonder if CDC has looked into this?

Seriously, if they don't want to do their job that they were elected to do then they should just damned resign and stop this fleabagging.

There is a solution to this matter

Submitted by Rhymes With Right on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 8:22pm.

And Barack Obama has legitimated it this week.

http://rhymeswithright.mu.nu/archives/325404.php

You have an obstructionist minority n the legislative branch obstructing the executive's legislative priorities. Mitch Daniels can just bypass the whole separation of powers thing and executive order right-to-work and any other priority into order since the lack of a quorum means they cannot do business.

Besides, there is a fundamental problem with mandatory unionism and/or mandatory agency fees as a condition of employment -- if a boss and a third party can contractually obligate workers to give over a part of their pay to a group "for their own good", why not let the boss negotiate with his pastor to mandate the workers tithe to the church?

So

Submitted by guefy on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 9:20pm.

I vote 100% Republican. I'm also a 25 year member of the United Steelworkers and live in Indiana. I don't care for some of the public workers' unions and the political leanings of the heads of the unions, but this bill in IN is only to limit money going into the Dems. warchests, not to create jobs, as the Republicans claim.

This came up last year and it was asked of any Republican in the statehouse, name 1 company that would not move to IN because it is not a right-to-work state. Do you know how many were named? Not one.

Just like anywhere, if you don't like something where you work, then move on. If you don't want to pay union dues, don't work at a company where you have to pay union dues. It's that simple!

0 jobs will be created. Governor Daniels knows this. He even said last year that this is not part of his agenda. He said he would sign a bill for this, but he's not going to push for it.

USWA 25 years. Never voted for a Democrat yet.

As a matter of conservative

Submitted by Ken Shepherd on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 11:54pm.

As a matter of conservative principle, my friend.

You want to join a union, go for it. But don't expect that a condition of employment should be being a member of a union if you don't want to be.

We need to maximize freedom in the workplace and in economic matters generally. It's not just about job creation, it's about maximizing liberty.

And you know what, when you maximize liberty, you unshackle the economy as a bonus.

I guess she was afraid she would burst into flames if she had inserted the word "God" in there. LOL If that is a accurate quote of her, believe me, it was an intentional omission.

You know, you and your fellow democrat's habit of walking out of the Legislature to avoid a vote started with the soon to be Confederates in the US Congress, low these many years ago, and look how that turned out. Is that really the side of history you want to be on?

Only a democrat

Submitted by ohio granny on Sat, 01/07/2012 - 11:46am.

Only democrat weasels run when they can't get their way. Didn't the voters of Indiana put the republicans in charge of both houses and the governor? If the democrat weasels are not willing to stay and fight for what they say they believe in, why should they keep their jobs. Those seats should be declared vacant and up for a vote in their districts, with the democrats who ran away from not being eligible to run for those seats again.
If $1000.00 a day fine don't get their attention, I am sure losing their seats will.

I call them what they are. They are tyrants who don't care what the voters say, they want TO DICTATE WHAT THE VOTERS GET.

Just another example of democrats being...... thugs, cheats, crooks, and hypocrites.
